  1. Patriot Says:

In all honesty, Bush probably only has one friend. Rove. Bush is the elevated shoes Stalin wore to look taller.

  2. Marie Says:

Bush has caused some consternation among his supporters. We must take advantage of this, and the scandal afflicting Delay (republican leadrship) Frist (Republican leadership) and the administration (Rove, Libby, possibly the lot of them). Democratic leaders must be pressured to keep the heat on them all.
“We must remember that the blacksmith bends the iron with repeated blows of his hammer, then he heats the iron again. Persistence and unrelenting pressure is the key. There is still time to break and overthrow this criminal regime.
    The alternative is unthinkable.”

  3. verse18 Says:

I must not be the only one thinking that Dubya and Harriet are more than just “friends.” Whenever I see them talk about each other, they look like love sick puppies. Dubya blushes and gets this “Aw shucks” grin everytime and I can’t help imagine I hear “Let’s get it on in the back ground.”

    Is it just me?

  4. RedStateProud Says:

This is disgusting. Harriet Miers is a wonderful lady and you should leave her alone.

  5. Mary Poppin Says:

This is off the subject but this “MARTIAL LAW” that Old Bushie wants the congress to pass a law for the military to take over if we have a flu out break. This to me is scary thought. I don’t know to much about “MARTIAL LAW”.

  6. progressive and proud Says:

    How do you know, troll?

  7. Mary Poppin Says:

No we will not leave this woman alone because she has no experience as a Supreme Court Judge. If she thinks old Bushie is a brilliant man we all need help.

  8. P.P. Says:

    How do you not know?

  9. Zippy the Other Pinhead Says:

What concerns me is Georgie’s comment at yesterday’s press conference that Ms. Miers is “the most qualified person in the country to sit on the Supreme Court.” If he truly believes this, then perhaps Rove and the rest of the gang should try selling Georgie some oceanfront property in Arizona too…

  10. Southwest Bob Says:

georgie has demonstrated that he is lousy when it comes to making decisions. He relies on his “gut” and reading briefing papers, reviewing data and having an idea about what is going on in the world is of little interest to him. I could only stomach a small portion of his news conference, but it appeared to me that he believes that because he is president he gets to pick who he wants. It’s not much more complicated than that. I don’t think there is a master plan to all of this. GW rewards friends and that’s what this is all about.

  11. Zookeeper Says:

It’s dangerous to rely on your “gut” when you haven’t got a clue.

  12. bob Says:

are you guys kidding me? you know the saying “the bigger they are the harder they fall.” well the u.s. is the biggest ever, and is going to fall so hard this winter there going to have to re adjust the richter scale. hope you have and amalite and about 500kilos of dried food stuffs.

Our video tribute to the Harriet Miers nomination:

  14. Tigris Lily Says:

George really does believe he can do whatever he wants. He as much as told the press that –i.e. “I’m the President. I can do what I want–what are you going to do about it?” The Republicans keep telling us that as well.
I hope they remember that when the Dems get back into power.

  15. Gary Kleppe Says:

George really does believe he can do whatever he wants. He as much as told the press that –i.e. “I’m the President. I can do what I want–what are you going to do about it?” The Republicans keep telling us that as well.

As long as we let crooks like Diebold and ES&S count our votes (or not count them, as the case may be) then the Republicans are right. What are we going to do about it?

  16. Virago Says:

Well done, especially for a quick response. 2 comments — the best pictures are the ones where outfits help date the picture as being from a good way back. If you can find more pictures of that nature, I’d suggest including them.

Also — place a longer pause on the “most brillant man” quote. It’s not readable with the current short pause.

    Nice work!

  17. Blow Rielly Says:

Read on MichaelMoore.com about Harriets invovement with the ignored 9/11 breifing papers under “Determined to Strike”.

  18. blindprogressive Says:

This may be cronyism but this is a brilliant move one his part (or Cheney’s) we know what kind of judge he wants. His people know their cause. Sure, conservatives are quesy, but we should be too. He could’ve gotten worse, but Miers might be the worse that we fear. Anyway, enjoy your popcorn while conservatives fume. The tribute should be run widely on TV.

  19. Elvis Says:

    RedStateProud,

Because you and the president believe that she is “a wonderful person” does not mean that she would be a wonderful judge for our supreme court. Therefore we all should be extremely critical of the both of them, and discuss all issues open and honestly.

If this means we have a little fun in the process, so be it. If that offends you, don’t read it. People in this nation do not have the right to “not be offended.” In fact it’s the opposite. The offensive have the right to speak offensively. Like it or not.

“The leading self delusion of proud people is their false security in themselves and their resources” - William Blum

  20. Speed King Says:

“See that rock up there, Harriet? That’s where I dun fell off and landed on my head last time I was drunk.”

  21. -jay Says:

Looking past ‘lil Georgie’s platitudes about Meirs, note that she was mostly active as a CORPORATE attorney. This coincides with Roberts background and indicates many ulterior motives behind her nomination. Corporate takeover of government continues without letup.

  22. mimalee Says:

I am a Christian and as a Christian I believe this nation is under GOD’S judgment. And I believe the HAMMER of that judgment is named George w Bush.

  23. Blow Reilly Says:

As a new troll; you’ll have to do a little better minimalee. That is just a little too stupid to respond to.

  24. cj Says:

#8: “No we will not leave this woman alone because she has no experience as a Supreme Court Judge.”

OK, I agree that Miers isn’t qualified, but, ummm, Mary Poppin, maybe you could explain how exactly Bush would’ve picked someone for the Supreme Court who has experience as a Supreme Court Justice. Last time I checked, it’s kinda hard to be nominated for a position you already hold.

  25. AvengingAngel Says:

What little is known about Miers suggests she is a political operative with some extreme views if not extreme qualifications. In a nutshell, Miers probably fails the “Three Strikes Test” for the Supreme Court:

    X Dubious Qualifications
    X Extreme Views
    X Proven Partisan Operative

    For the full story, see:

“Miers Fails the Three Strikes Test”

  26. Mary Poppin Says:

#26 Lets face it the only reason he picked her is because she is a friend of Bushies. You can explain the statement It’s kind a hard to be nominated for a position you already hold.

  27. getplaning Says:

#23 is hitting the nail squarely on the head. The Republican, “conservative” movement is an economic movement that is really fascism, pure and simple. All the smoke and mirrors about “morals” and “christian family values” are exactly that- a smokescreen- for the corporate takeover of America. History demonstrates what happens to nations who allow this to happen, and it has yet to be a happy outcome for anyone but the very wealthy. Google “14 traits of fascism” for some very enlightening articles on what is happening right in front of our noses.

  28. snotsdale Says:

y’all are missing a key point about myers and her puppy-like fealty: when you and your sitting veep are about to get your asses INDICTED, possibly for TREASON, you really want a freind or two on the Court that will have final say………. i’d say that’s ALL the qualifications she needed.

  29. Mary Poppin Says:

It really would be nice if the Supreme Court would have TV cameras in the court room. Judge Judy was on Larry King Show and she put cameras in her court room. We need to see what is going on in this court room.

  30. bob Says:

why doesnt george hire a pilot for airforce 1 who has no expierance, or a fema director for that matter and see what happens

  31. Anne Says:

When Bush was looking over her shoulder as she spoke, the look on his face said, “you shore is cute little thang huney, we gone git it on”. Something’s fishy about this appointment.

  32. Blue State Red Says:

Many conservative Republicans, including me, were looking forward to a battle over this nomination - one that would tear the mask off the left’s faux “progressivism.” It is past time to reacquaint all Americans with the left’s strategy of waging war on American culture through the establishment of a statist, elitist tyranny of judges [Exhibit A: the Massachusetts gay marriage ruling; Exhibit B: the recent “Pledge of Allegiance” ruling] With the appointment of Harriet Miers, that battle for the hearts and minds of the voters will have to be postponed.

As disappointed as most conservatives are, however (also including me), liberals don’t have much reason to rejoice. If she is the “steel magnolia” she has been called by her Democratic friends in Texas, Harriet Miers very well may give Tricky Chuck Schumer and the rest of the Senate Democrats an even worse drubbing than John Roberts did. And if confirmed she is very likely to be a diligent, intellectually disciplined judicial conservative. It would not surprise me to see her develop into a jurist like Justice Thomas.

Having basically given John Roberts a pass, the Senate Democrats will have to show some backbone, or else risk the support of their base at a time when they are desperate to win an election. Yet, given her long history of playing both sides of the political fence in Texas (a state whose legislature was controlled by Democrats until recently), the left will find that Harriet Miers presents few opportunities for attack except her religious faith and her connections to the President. Personal attacks on either subject won’t sit very well with the voters Democrats will need to win the elections of 2006 and 2008. Democrats will be damned if they do, and damned if they don’t. Maybe that’s what the President had in mind all along.

Sleep tight, Dems. You are about to be outsmarted once again - by Dubya, the man you love to hate.

  33. Mary Poppin Says:

Let’s face it Miers is in love with Bushie why else would she think he is “BRILLANT”. Laura you better watch out.

  34. zola daniels Says:

hey #29 A quote by Sinclair Lewis. When FASCISM comes to America, it will be Wrapped in the FLAG and carrying a CROSS!

I see. So, your idea of living under tyranny is (A) not being allowed to force your marriage views on others, and (B) not being able to force others’ children to pray to your deity of choice. Does that about cover it?

  36. Huh? Says:

This is disgusting. Harriet Miers is a wonderful lady and you should leave her alone.

    Comment by RedStateProud

Being proud of a red state is disgusting. Leave us alone.

  37. Hunter Morrow Says:

Harriet Miers should be d’qued simply because she is such a patronage pick. Not only that, she knows where the skeletons are buried and is hugely loyal to Bush and all of the right-wing toadies. Any time a case involving republicans would come to the SC she’d basically have to recuse herself. She dealt with Bush’s shady past and is hugely pro-corporate. Isn’t that enough? Miers and Roberts on the Supreme Court will set the working man and the poor man back decades, you can mark my words.

  38. Mr. Evil Says:

The above picture speaks many words:

    1. The campsite’s right over here, tent’s ready to go and so am I!

    2. Finally we’re alone!

    3. While Laura’s back at the ranch cookin’, let’s do some cookin’ of our own.

    4. No Secret Service here Harriet, just secrets!

    5. I kept my promise. Now you can keep yours.

  39. US Labor Says:

“Sleep tight, Dems. You are about to be outsmarted once again - by Dubya, the man you love to hate.”

Well, were not sleeping tight, and apparently even some Repugs aren’t happy about Harry. Being outsmarted has nothing to do with it. We just don’t have the votes to keep her out-yet.

    You sleep tight, jack ass.

  40. Sharon Cox Says:

BSR, many happy dreams for you as well. Let’s see, unless your realy wealthy, very unlikely as you are here with us, then your in the same boat as us. When Miers get’s in office she and the rest of corporate Bushies are going after you, just like they do us. More taxes, less rights, no more constitution, no more freedom and now your buddie is going for marshall law. Give up your gun bud at the point of a guardsman’s ak47. No food stamps, likely he will give us all soup lines right after all our job’s have gone away. Maybe you will be lucky enough not to have your home distroyed for oil rigs, but wait, your living on top of a toxic waste dump. No money, all exchanged for Chinese yen and we will all be in chains for the debt’s this administration has incured for Bushes war’s. I don’t worry cause I’m probably not going to live long enough to see this mess Bush has caused to turn around, since I’m not a big consumer I survive alright, but any one owning a business or working for a living should be very worried.. So BSR you have happy deluded dreams……Blessings

It would be irresponsible not to!

  43. Blue State Red Says:

“So, your idea of living under tyranny is (A) not being allowed to force your marriage views on others, and (B) not being able to force others’ children to pray to your deity of choice. Does that about cover it?”

Nope. Not even close. My idea of tyranny is living in a world where social policy decisions (e.g., the Pledge of Allegiance language, and the definition of marriage) are made by life-tenured judges. It matters little whether the judges are conservative or liberal. In our constitutional system all government power comes from the consent of the governed, by and through their elected representatives - not from the minds of judges. It just so happens that the left has tended to rely more on the judiciary to establish its preferred policies, because the left keeps losing elections.

  44. Blue State Red Says:

“So, your idea of living under tyranny is (A) not being allowed to force your marriage views on others, and (B) not being able to force others’ children to pray to your deity of choice. Does that about cover it?”

I am reminded by a fellow conservative that another excellent example of judicial tyranny was Roper v. Simmons, the SCOTUS decision invalidating all state laws that permit the execution of murderers who happen to be under 18 years old at the time of their crimes. In that case, a 17-year old thug even bragged that his age would protect him from the ultimate sanction for his kidnap-murder of a housewife.

The effect of the Roper decision is to restrict the power of the several state legislatures to fully protecting their citizens from murderers, based solely on the age of the muderer. If a 17-year, 364-day old juvenile beats, rapes, trotures, strangles, stabs and dismembers a 12-year old Girl Scout, the states are no longer free, under Roper, to prescribe execution as one of the appropriate punishments for such a heinous crime.

This loss of freedom is not self-imposed, as would be the case if it was due to the decision of the people’s elected representatives. Rather, it has been imposed by judicial fiat. And since most of the justices on the Roper court were moderate to conservative, this is an example of the point that the relative conservatism or liberalism of the judges makes little difference. What matters - first, last amd always - is the people’s loss of the freedom to govern themselves.

  45. Blue State Red Says:

“When Miers get’s in office she and the rest of corporate Bushies are going after you, just like they do us. More taxes, less rights, no more constitution, no more freedom and now your buddie is going for marshall law. Give up your gun bud at the point of a guardsman’s ak47. You really should lay off that fever swamp kool-aid, friend.

  47. Blue State Red Says:

More right wing humor from http://www.scrappleface.com:

“A clearly disappointed President George Bush this morning announced that he had failed to locate a total stranger to replace retiring Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, and was forced to settle for someone he knows and trusts.

“In a news conference to nominate White House Counsel Harriet Miers, 60, as an associate justice on the high court, Mr. Bush admitted, ‘I don’t get out much, and I don’t personally know very many total strangers. So, I had to settle for someone whose views, personality, intellectual abilities and work habits were familiar to me. I hope the American people will eventually find it in their hearts to forgive me.’

“As news broke of this new setback for the Bush White House, the president’s popularity rating plunged into the single digits and despondent Republican lawmakers wondered if their party could manage to ‘keep the doors open and the lights on’ until the 2006 mid-term elections.”

  48. Cheryl Reynolds Says:

All this anti abortion talk is a smokescreen for us to get all worked up over. Of course she is anti abortion. He would never put someone up that isn’t. The scarry thing is that Bush has hit the trifecta with Miers. Anti abortion, a corporatist, and someone to protect the Executive. If things continue as they are going he will need a great deal of protection, especially when we take back Congress in 06.

  49. Lynn Says:

BSR - recall, the supremes put the moron in the oval office (5-4). And you’re so comfy with the repugs’ trifecta. Tell us, really, do you think they give a shit about the majority of us? check your tax break, medical insurance, pension plan, the public revenue being spent on their war,the rise in poverty rate, the pork barreling, cuts in programs for the middle and lower classes….on and on. And you’re worried about gay marriage. wow. BSR, really, why are you buying in to the (fabricated, and well I might add) culture war? While you’re preoccupied, they’re passing policies that are destroying our country. for crissake, wake up.

  50. Not Surprised Says:

No wonder we can’t get the White House and Congress back. Rather than promoting our ideals, our vision for America, we continue to remind the Republicans that they’re doing it wrong. I just hope 08′ doesn’t end up like ‘00 and ‘04. We claim the GOP is dividing America, but what have we done to bring it together. Putting Dean as Chairman? Selecting hate-monger Pelosi over Martin Frost for House Leader (which ultimately added to his defeat in Dallas)? What’s next Warren Beatty for President? Spare me the lecture and show me some action. Maybe Hillary can do two things that none of the rest have: promote actual ideas rather than lambasting those proposed by the GOP (all we do is give them free press time), and win!

  51. patsijean Says:

Some of us would consider him the “Anti-Christ” and the fact that so many people follow him blindly like so many dumb sheep, willing to look away or ignore what he and his henchmen have done to our country’s security and international respect; environment, air and water quality, and global warming; almost certain destruction of wilderness areas, National Parks, and Endangered Species; setbacks in education, care for the poor and elderly, and respect for ALL our cultures and religions (not just the evangelical right-this means Jews, Buddists, mainstream Catholics, Methodists and Presyterians, etc., Muslim and Islam, Wicca, Unitarian, those that are Agnostic or are on the border of giving up on religion altogether–it is their choice); the dishonor in his behavior toward the constitution; and the way he has sucessfully divided the country into ‘warring’ factions, SHOULD PROVE IT.
This is not a President [Staff and Appointees] who have united our country as promised. They have divided us, and will continue. Bush is not thinking beyond his own period of power, but perhaps his Cronies are.

Bush is ignoring the Constitution which prohibits the consideration of religion in the choice of Supreme Court Judges whose job it is to protect that Constitution and those who are governed by it.

  52. DaytonBlue Says:

I know that I’m posting after-the-fact; however; I hope you can see that Harriet Miers was only a ‘placeholder’…she was never a serious candidate for the GOP.

If you look at the timeline, her ‘resignation’ coincided with the end of the grand jury’s term and the announcement of indictments against (for now) Libby. Before any Fitzmas ‘traction’ could take hold on this week’s news cycle, the WH announces at ‘oh-dark thirty’ that Bush will announce his NEW nominee. Now they scramble to cover this ‘news’ while the more important issues of ‘Official A’ and the others becomes colder…

This smells of Rove…wait for the bottom to drop out and then circle the wingnut wagons for the approaching ‘nuclear’ war for the SCOTUS…
