Update Re: Miers’ Church Website

UPDATE: We’ve learned that the Valley View church discussed below is not the Valley View church that Harriet Miers attends. Apologies for the error.

For 25 years, Supreme Court nominee Harriet Miers has attended the evangelical Valley View Christian Church in Dallas, Texas. Conservatives have pointed to her church ties as evidence of her ideological underpinnings, and the Los Angeles Times noted today that Miers has left “little evidence of her own values and convictions, beyond her commitment to her church.”

As TNR notes, the Valley View website features a list of theological principles held by church leaders and parishioners. For instance, one reads, “We believe in the universal Church, the living spiritual body, of which Christ is the Head and all born again persons are members.”

But according to a Google cache retrieved earlier this summer (link |screenshot), the list was altered recently to remove statements on four controversial issues that may come before the Court: abortion, homosexuality, evolution/creation, and euthanasia. Here are the four:

Abortion: “We believe that life is sacred. It begins at conception and should be held in respect. Abortion to us is the taking of innocent life and should be condemned.”

Homosexuality: “We believe that God created man and woman for celibacy or a monogamous relationship. Homosexuality is a perversion of God’s design and is condemned by Him in the Scriptures. We love the homosexual but denounce the behavior.”

Evolution/Creation: “We believe that God created this world in 6 days, that He created man in His own image, for fellowship with Himself.”

Euthanasia: “We believe that God is sovereign. Man does not possess the judgment nor the right to determine when one’s life should end. Euthanasia is man assuming God’s sovereign role and therefore, must be rejected.”

DOH! GOOGLE CACHE, WE LOVE YOU!

  4. roverinexile says:

Interesting. Given their views on euthanasia (”Man does not possess the judgment nor the right to determine when one’s life should end.”), presumably they are also anti-death penalty.

  5. ThoughtfulChristian says:

Interesting choice of words there on euthanasia. Does that line of thought extend to capital punishment as well?

    #4 & 5 – and WAR??? hmmmmmmmm…

  7. Jamie says:

    Ummmm….

“We believe that God is sovereign. Man does not possess the judgment nor the right to determine when one’s life should end.”

This language is interesting. It could also be interpreted as saying that since god and god alone determines the when someone’s life should end, then all medical intervention to postpone death is against god’s will. So, no antibiotics for Miers, eh?

  8. afterthought says:

It is not terribly useful to apply logic
to drivel like this as it simply does
not apply to this line of thinking (or
    lack thereof).

  9. Gary Kleppe says:

Hm. Looks like they forgot one:
George W. Bush: “We believe that George W. Bush is God’s chosen representative on Earth. Therefore Mr. Bush should be obeyed without question.”

  10. Theresa says:

    #4, Anti-death penalty….in Texas……bwa ha ha ha ha

  11. Joe Bua says:

So, one might surmise that Miers and her church were given the heads up on her nomination, at least enough to change the website.

I’m more interested in one single question be answered of any court nominee, Supreme or otherwise: “Is your ultimate allegiance in all that you do as a government official to your God or to the Constitution of the United States?”

  12. Tom McGoff says:

With the Roberts/Miers nominations Mr. Bush has turned the U.S. Supreme Court into an evangelical Christian version of Iran’s Islamic Guardian Council. Americans are asleep. We will awaken to a new form of government. America has passed the point of no return thanks to the GOP and its faith-based vote machine. Future historians in free nations of the world will marvel at how easy it was for one irrational President to turn an enlightened dream of a republic into a fascist theocracy.

    Right on the money.

  14. Jason says:

I think someone should do an ringing endorsement of the homosexual community using their own statements above:

“We Love The Homosexual!” Says the Valley View Christian Church!

  15. Ugh says:

You’ve got to be kidding me. This is so stupid, I mean Roberts was Catholic and those are basically the positions of the Catholic church and no one thought to question him on it (much). Why would they think it’s necessary to remove that from Harriet Miers’ church’s website? Of course, if they were going to play up her connection to the church, then it makes sense.

Just stupid, haven’t they learned anything from Ollie North? The internet is just like email, it never goes away.

You guys are geniuses (the think progress folk). What would we do without you? Spread the word to all Dems on the Judiciary panel.

It would be interesting to try Cuban’s search engine, there is an option that requests archival:

  18. zoidberg says:

Nico, this is the wrong Valley View Christian Church. If you’ll note, its the one in Littleton, CO – while Miers’ is in Dallas, Texas and their website is http://www.vvcc.org/

  19. just john says:

    zoidberg — Good catch!

(What I’d been about to post was along the lines of: Some churches and similar neighborhood institutions never really look much at their websites until they suddenly start attracting attention.)

  20. Pete Bogs says:

    Bush’s comments on these topics:

Abortion: The only time killing the unborn is justified is when it’s done through acts of war

Homosexuality: As we say in Texas, “Mine’s bigger’n yours”

Evolution/Creation: Darwin’s beliefs were just theories… mine are based on undisputational facts…

Euthanasia: I have nothing against them… hell, I did a photo op with with a little Japanese kid once…

  21. Tommydee says:

Actually there is more going on here…. It appears as if Harriet and about 150 other church memebers split from the Church due to differences with the new pastor, Gary MaCarty, for the church… The previous pastor, Pastor Ron Key, is the head of the new church and they have held the last several services at a local hotel… This is the Pastor that has been outspoken about her participation in the church…

The split was due to some philosophical and procedural approaches to the ministry…. Not necessarily confrontational…

It appears as if they had brought in a new pastor and he may have been too liberal… (Relatively speaking) and the changes in the website are due to the changes in the focus of the church, while the new church (in the process of being formed) which she is staying with wants to maintain with Ron Keys as the Pastor…. I will have to do a search to find the links that review this information that I read this morning….

  22. disillusioned Joe says:

“•We believe that God created this world in 6 days, that He created man in His own image, for fellowship with Himself. ”
Therefore, since carbon dating is false, and the ’speed of light is slowing down over the last 5000 years’ our congregation should not
    - get an MRI or CT scan or even an X-ray
    - use a cell phone
    - use a GPS system
    - be on the internet (oops, this website shows that we are)
    - use electricity
    - use any modern pharmaceuticals that have not been derived from herbs (since genetics involves mutuation, and mutation is part of the mechanism needed for evolution)

Quick creationists, the scariest of all Christians(TM). Come, join Valley View Ministry.

  23. Jennty says:

Euthanasia: “We believe that God is sovereign. Man does not possess the judgment nor the right to determine when one’s life should end. Euthanasia is man assuming God’s sovereign role and therefore, must be rejected.”

should be ammended to add “Except in cases of brain dead women who should be attached to machines until the time of Rapture, at which point all bets are off”.

  24. Blue State Red says:

Nico is behind the news curve again, and he clearly doesn’t understand evangelical Christianity.

Point 1: Ms. Miers is reportedly following her pastor at Valley View to a new church he is planning to establish. The website changes at Valley View may not reflect anything more sinister than a change of church administration.

Point 2: A church can teach its doctrine concerning the problem of sin without listing a catalogue of those sins on its website. The website changes at Valley View may also simply reflect changes in how it chooses to present itself on the ‘net.

Of course, neither of those possibilities occurred to Nico’s paranoid little brain. They just don’t fit into his “Bush=Bad, Not Bush=Good” alternate reality.

  25. Hank says:

The American people are tired of judges who “legislate from the bench,” as the rightwing talk show hosts of Bill O’Righty and Sean Vannity, along with the entire network at Fox News has continously repeated.

Rest assured, we will now legislate from the Bible instead.

  26. tinfoil milliner says:

They dumped their dogma real quick.

Another stealth nominee in the hip-pocket of the eyeliner companies.

  27. just john says:

Halloooo? Anybody home? As has been pointed out above (#18), not only is that NOT HER CHURCH, it’s not even in the same state!

  28. Blue State Red says:

“With the Roberts/Miers nominations Mr. Bush has turned the U.S. Supreme Court into an evangelical Christian version of Iran’s Islamic Guardian Council.”

This shows how little you know about the Court, Catholicism, Evangelical Christianity, and the Iranian Islamic theocracy.

First, the Guardian Council is a sectarian government institution whose sole purpose is to “guard” the tenets of Islam. There is no comparable government institution in this or any other western nation.

Second, there are a number of practicing Catholics on the Supreme Court (including Chief Justice Roberts, and Justices Scalia and Thomas), but there is no requirement that any member of the Court be an adherent of any faith. In fact, the Constitution specifically prohibits religious tests for federal office.

Third, I am almost certain that Justices Stevens, Breyer and Ginsberg, the Court’s most liberal members, would be among the first to deny that that the Court is a theocratic institution of any kind, let alone an Evangelical Christian institution.

Fourth, there never has been an Evangelical Christian justice on the Court since the rise of Evangelical Christianity (in response to the doctinal weaknesses of the “mainline” churches) in the 1970s. If confirmed, Harriet Miers would be the first such justice in U.S. history.

There, now, all you “progressive” diversity lovers should feel better already. By supporting the Miers nomination you will be supporting both gender and religious diversity on the U.S. Supreme Court. Isn’t that special?

  29. Zee Hippo says:

    This is the wrong church!!

    Her church is http://www.vvcc.org

I wish it were true, but let’s not stoop to what the right wingers do.

  30. Just Pete says:

Its really mind-boggling how unthinking modern fundamentalists are. Do they ever examine any of their dogma? The “statement of principle” about monogamy is particularly weak. What do they think when they are doing their bible studies and so many women are being boffed outside of monagamy? How about selling daughters?

  31. Nico says:

    Correction coming…

  32. Joe Sixpack says:

Hey, Blue State Red, #29, how’s it hanging? It’s me, Joe. Good take on these “progressives”, and that statement about them not knowing the difference between “the court, Catholicism, Evangelical Christianity, and the Iranian Islamic theoracy” was a good one. (But I have to tell you, as a rightwing redneck conservative myself, it went right over my head, too, he, he).

Correct me if I’m wrong, but why the “litimus test” to make sure the one Junior appoints is a devout Christian? I mean, why not an athiest, or a muslim, or a jew? A USA/Gallup poll in Jan 2002 of Americans found that only 50% were religious (down from 54% in 1999); 33% were “spiritual but not religious” and 10% were neither. With 9 justices, why not a true and balanced representative of the American people.

I have to ask you, Red, do you REALLY believe all that hocus-pocus about the world being made in 7 days and that Moses lived 900 years? Come on, say it with a straight face and I’ll buy you a beer.

  33. Dartanyon says:

Now why would a lesbian, albeit a rightwing lesbian, attend such a vehemently homophobic church?

  34. alizaryn says:

ValleyviewCC.net is for a church in Colorado not the one in Dallas. the address to the one in Dallas is vvcc.org.

  35. Joe Sixpack says:

Well, Dartanyon, I guess you are one of the “progressive” liberals old Red was talking about. A lesbian, indeed. And a rightwing one at that. You just have no shame so no wonder you get us conservatives riled up. We would never, ever, allow a homosexual on the court. We don’t even like the term homo: homosexual, homosapien, etc.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but just because she has never been married might have nothing to do with her sexuality. Maybe it is because she is just plain-assed ugly, did you ever think of that? Now Condi Rice, on the other hand, she’s a real question mark. Makes us conservatives wonder what she kissed last, which makes her one of our darlings.

  36. mighty aphrodite says:

Get up to speed, Sixpack!! We have had (and have) atheists/humanists and Jews on the Court. Your religious “tolerance” only goes to the point that people agree with you. The only Catholics or evangelicals you folks “tolerate” are the “fallen-away” Catholics – Kennedy, Leahy, Biden, Kerry, Cuomo, etc. Beware, BSR, Joe’s so desperate he’s likely to slip something in that cheap beer he drinks!!

  37. cj says:

We’ve already had homosexuals on the Court too.

    Too bad, Sixpack.

  38. Joe Sixpack says:

Aphrodite, I’m really glad to hear from you. Gettin’ any lately? He, he. By the way, one conservative to another, that kind of hurt, telling me to get up to speed in front of the liberals here. And that crack about my cheap beer—well, all right, you got me there: it is pretty cheap beer. Has me pissing every five minutes, I tell you.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but are the “fallen-away” Catholics you mentioned, any worse than the born-again whores, thugs, crooks, crackheads and assholes that make up half of Junior’s administration not to mention Junior himself? I mean, does “tolerating” extend to the rightwing war against Hillary Clinton, or Terri Schiavo’s devistated husband, or to a war mother who lost her son in combat? Or does “tolerating” only apply to letting the conservaticves like Karl Rove and Tom DeLay to get away with unethical conduct?

When me and you going to sit down over a pitcher of beer and share some pickled pigs-feet, honey?

  40. Joe Sixpack says:

Tell you what. I’ll shave the hair off my back and shoulders. Ok?

  41. Ryan Neat says:

“Your religious “tolerance” only goes to the point that people agree with you.”

Actually this is a great description of evangelicals and right wingers of every religion. See I don’t have a problem with evangelicals, other than that their religious values seem to convince them that their ‘literalist’ views are an excuse to reject facts, science in favor of nonsensical mythology and prejudices when setting laws. They reject reason, logic and science – which are all critical in deciding matters of law (that could explain why you’re such a crap lawyer?)…

For instance the theories of reichwingers on reproductive rights disregard science and reason in place of religious nonsense. My stance in favor of reproductive rights doesn’t prevent them from following ‘their conscience’ no matter how irrational, and yet their (your) irrational stance would prevent someone with a different religious view from choosing what their conscience and science says. It’s this sort of bigotry and intolerance that makes zealots (like you) unsuitable for law, politics or even a rational conversation..

  42. Ryan Neat says:

And lets not forget that even the catholic church this week started teaching that ‘not all of the bible is true’, and that evangelicals and right wing christians are a dangerous trend…

  44. Ryan Neat says:

President George W. Bush told Palestinian ministers that God had told him to invade Afghanistan and Iraq – and create a Palestinian State, a new BBC series reveals.

Nabil Shaath says: “President Bush said to all of us: ‘I’m driven with a mission from God. God would tell me, “George, go and fight those terrorists in Afghanistan.” And I did, and then God would tell me, “George, go and end the tyranny in Iraq …” And I did. And now, again, I feel God’s words coming to me, “Go get the Palestinians their state and get the Israelis their security, and get peace in the Middle East.” And by God I’m gonna do it.’”

Abu Mazen was at the same meeting and recounts how President Bush told him: “I have a moral and religious obligation. So I will get you a Palestinian state.”

  45. Jim Lippard says:

  46. mighty aphrodite says:

SIXPACK – (and from what I’ve gleaned, I’m not talking about your abs) – I didn’t know you had any feelings to get hurt – being a conservative and all!! ALOT of sinners go to church or synagogue, Joe; but being the knowledgable, quality conservative you are, you know full well that “church isn’t a museum of saints – it’s a hospital for sinners”. The rot-gut, man-slaughterer, drunk, debaucher, coke freak, liar and cheat – (and from what I’ve heard, those are his GOOD points )who is known to the world as Ted “THE Swimmer”, and the rest of his boozy, Northeast Catholic “friends” made the choice not to adhere to his church’s teachings. That, of course, is their right – but when Catholic hypocrites like Tom Harkin, put fliers on cars in Catholic Church parking lots about being “in sync” with the Catholic Church, that is quite over the top.

  47. mighty aphrodite says:

  48. Mr. Evil says:

You know God speaks to me from time to time and he even stops by my place for a visit now and then.

Hell, just last night he came by and we sat and bullshitted each other over an immaculate amount of beer and cigarettes. He said he’d been on the other side of the universe for a few years checking on a few planets that had gotten it right and were progressing beautifully.

I asked him about his boy, George Bush, and he said that by all means George wasn’t his boy. Huh? He said that damn Satan has always taken advantage of when he leaves for a while to go check out his other worlds and this time was no different. He also added I’m just biding my time for when the time is right I’ll let the world know that George Bush is not a man of Me. He is the spawn of Satan. (Handing God another beer) So, God, when, pray tell, will this happen? And God said, real soon my friend! Real soon. You know all his friends that are being indicted and investigated now? I said sure! Well a few of them are going to start singing like my beautiful canaries. And it will be a lovely song! Now hand me another beer or I’ll make you change your nickname! Sure God, Sure! No problem.

  49. Dartanyon says:

A day in the life of Joe Sixpack (his beer, not hsi abs.)

Joe gets up at 6 a.m. and fills his coffeepot with water to prepare his morning coffee. The water is clean and good because some tree-hugging liberal fought for minimum water-quality standards. With his first swallow of coffee, he takes his daily medication. His medications are safe to take because some stupid commie liberal fought to insure their
safety and that they work as advertised.

All but $10 of his medications are paid for by his employer’s medical plan because *some liberal* union workers fought their employers for paid medical insurance – now Joe gets it too. He prepares his morning breakfast, bacon and eggs. Joe’s bacon is safe to eat because some girly-man liberal fought for laws to regulate the meat packing industry.

In the morning shower, Joe reaches for his shampoo. His bottle is properly labeled with each ingredient and its amount in the total contents because some crybaby liberal fought for his right to know what
he was putting on his body and how much it contained.

Joe dresses, walks outside and takes a deep breath. The air he breathes is clean because environmentalist wacko liberal fought for laws to stop industries from polluting our air. He walks to the subway station
for his government-subsidized ride to work. It saves him considerable money in parking and transportation fees because some fancy-pants liberal fought for affordable public transportation, which gives everyone the opportunity to be a contributor.

Joe begins his work day. He has a good job with excellent pay, medical benefits, retirement, paid holidays and vacation because some lazy liberal union members fought and died for these working standards.
Joe’s employer pays these standards because Joe’s employer doesn’t want his employees to call the union. If Joe is hurt on the job or becomes unemployed, he’ll get a worker compensation or unemployment check because some stupid liberal didn’t think he should lose his home or go hungry because of his temporary misfortune.

It’s noontime and Joe needs to make a bank deposit so he can pay some bills. Joe’s deposit is federally insured by the FSLIC because some godless liberal wanted to protect Joe’s money from unscrupulous bankers
who ruined the banking system before the Great Depression.

Joe has to pay his Fannie Mae-underwritten mortgage and his below-market federal student loan because some elitist liberal decided that Joe and the government would be better off if he was educated and earned more money over his lifetime.

Joe is home from work. He plans to visit his father this evening at his farm home in the country. He gets in his car for the drive. His car is among the safest in the world because some America-hating liberal fought
for car safety standards. He arrives at his boyhood home. His was the third generation to live in the house financed by Farmers’ Home Administration because bankers didn’t want to make rural loans.

Shut, liberals even tolerate his posting here and making a fool out of himself each day.

Remember you really won’t need any proof, just make up something.

  51. Tony Plank says:

    A couple of observations.

First, I am a member of Harriet Mier’s church though I do not know her personally. I am merely a member and do not speak for the anyone other than myself.

I doubt seriously that the “other” Valley View Christian Church changed its webpage to avoid controversy. Few evangelical churches I have been in or around are so flexible as to change statements of faith substantially over time much less a year.

Lastly, I would suggest that not all evangelicals reject Science out of hand in a belief that a literalist perspective requires one to totally reconcile observed reality and the Word of God. I am a member of a Restoration Movement Church because of its toleration of viewpoints on matters where essential Christian doctrine is not at issue. The classic statement from Restoration Movement founders is, “In essentials unity; in non essentials liberty; in all things charity.”

Casting these broad generalizations at evangelicals is no more legitimate than when those of the Radical Religious Right castigate Liberals as a whole. It is not constructive and obfuscates the real issues behind rhetorical bombast. I understand well the temptation to ridicule people that may by their words often seem a bit antiquated in worldview, but I and many Christians take umbrage with these inaccurate stereotypes.

Try not to drive your car; don’t watch T.V.; don’t use the internet. Stay at home. Read a book. Play with your kids. Engage in a hobby.

Finally something has united both the right and left! It seems no one likes Miers. Her only apparent qualification is that she has devoted too much of her adult life to the President. Of course, presidents of all parties have put cronies on the SC bench occasionally for over 200 years but that doesn’t mean we should accept this one. Roberts at least was exceptionally qualified. Maybe both sides can agree to defeat Miers and get a qualified candidate. It won’t be someone of the idealogical tilt you want but at least they can have some actual experience.

When President Bush nominated John Roberts for the Supreme Court, I was excited. Finally, a pro-life nominee at a time when we controlled the Senate and could assure his confirmation!

But then, John Roberts, now Chief Justice John Roberts, failed to meet my, and I expect your, expectations. He had no record on the life of the unborn. I thought this was cowardly of Bush who had told us all that he would nominate Justices in the mold of Thomas and Scalia and then when he had the chance, did not do that.

Or maybe he did. I don’t know about you but this “you’ll be impressed with him” wink, wink business isn’t nearly as bold as I expected.

And now he gets another chance to nominate a pro-life Justice and again, he goes for a weak option in Harriet Miers.

This “trust me, wink wink” business isn’t going to work. Is President Bush ashamed of being pro-life? Why does he nominate Justices that are clearly too ashamed to be honest with the public.

Clearly, President Bush has waned from his faith and he needs our help. Please pray that President Bush finds the courage and conviction to show the liberals that he is boldly pro-life and confirm to us all that Harriet Miers is pro-life.
