October 6: This Day In Iraq War History»

Today, President Bush ducked responsibility for the mistakes he has made in the Iraq war, saying, “No act of ours invited the rage of the killers.” Bush needs only to look at today’s date — October 6th — over the past 3 years to see what acts of his have persuaded more and more Iraqis to join the ranks of the insurgency.

Details below:

October 6, 2002: Bush Promises Liberation, Not Conquest, of Iraq

Philadelphia Inquirer headline: “Bush vows to help Iraq rebuild; In his speech tomorrow, the President will promise the Iraqi people liberation, not conquest, an aide said.” [Philadelphia Inquirer, 10/6/02]

Bush: “Some worry that a change of leadership in Iraq could create instability and make the situation worse. The situation could hardly get worse, for world security and for the people of Iraq. The lives of Iraqi citizens would improve dramatically if Saddam Hussein were no longer in power, just as the lives of Afghanistan’s citizens improved after the Taliban.” [Bush, 10/7/02]

October 6, 2003: White House’s Cronyism Contracts Leave Iraqis Without Basic Services

Joe M. Allbaugh, a close friend of President Bush’s and the director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency until last March, is here to tell you that his new company, which advises clients on how to get business in Iraq, is not trading on his White House connections. The Iraqis need assistance, Mr. Allbaugh said, and he can help. [NYT, 10/6/03]

President Bush announced yesterday that the White House will take a stronger role in overseeing the struggling effort to rebuild Iraq… The announcement comes [amid] criticism of the administration for delays in restoring power, providing security and formulating a plan to cope with the complexities of rebuilding a country of 24 million people. [Washington Post, 10/7/03]

October 6, 2004: Duelfer Report Eliminates Primary Justification For Iraq War; Bremer Says Bush Was Not Prepared For Post-War Iraq; Bush Delivers a “Major Speech on Terrorism”

Saddam Hussein had no weapons of mass destruction or the immediate capability of producing them prior to the 2003 Iraq War, the chief U.S. weapons inspector for Iraq said in a report released Wednesday. [Newshour, 10/6/04]

“[T]here was considerable surprise and distress inside the White House this week when Iraq’s former administrator let loose with what he intended to be off-the-record comments criticizing the administration’s handing of Iraq… According to The Washington Post story Tuesday, Bremer conceded in a speech at an insurance conference in West Virginia that ‘we never had enough troops on the ground.’ He added: ‘We paid a big price for not stopping it because it established an atmosphere of lawlessness.’” [Newsweek, 10/6/04]

Scrambling for a new edge since stumbling in last week’s debate, President Bush abruptly reshuffled his schedule so he could deliver a major speech on terrorism today aimed at blunting Sen. John F. Kerry’s burst of post-debate momentum. [Boston Herald, 10/6/04]

October 6, 2005: Bush Delivers Another Major Speech on Terrorism; Takes No Accountability For Missteps

You guys are just TOO GOOD! You find the best stuff… how do you do it? What made you look at past headlines on this day? Or do you all just have photographic memories.

I know I’m gushing, so it sounds insincere, but I promise I’m being honest. I always love coming here to see what new information the staff has for us.

  4. Zookeeper Says:

    Unforgivable. Sociopathic. FUBAR.

  5. Drew Mackenzie Says:

    It’s “War President Day.”

We celebrate it with rhetoric, bankruptcy, and the dehumanization of third-world cultures.

  6. TLV Says:

Excellent work! Mind if I don’t throw a party in honor of this occasion, though? I’m just too bummed out about this sick, delusional administration.

A major speech? A major speech? Where? When? Did I miss it? I’ve read the WaPo, the NYT, etc. and didn’t see anything that looked like a major speech.

  11. Southern Democrat Says:

This totally contradicts what Bush said in his speech at Fort Brag just this past summer.

“Some of the violence you see in Iraq is being carried out by ruthless killers who are converging on Iraq to fight the advance of peace and freedom. Our military reports that we have killed or captured hundreds of foreign fighters in Iraq who have come from Saudi Arabia, Syria, Iran, Egypt, Sudan, Yemen, Libya and other nations.” George Bush -June 28, 2005.

In that speech he actually, unknowingly, admitted to being the cause of his latest justification for the war in Iraq. Now he’s saying that no act of their’s invited the rage of the killers? Well, according to Bush this past June, the only reason why most of the insurgents are there in the first place, is because we’re there. They’re coming from all over the place, just to fight us, and now look at what Iraq has become!

  12. Leatherneck Says:

Bush claims today that “no act of ours invited the rage of killers”?

He probably forgot the taunting message he sent to them on 2 July 2003: “Bring them on!”

The death toll was only 65 then.

  13. mighty aphrodite Says:

Thank you, peaceniks!!! Peace! Love! Prius! I LOVE the link to http://www.worldwontwait!!!! Wow!!! So good to know you are easily and thoroughly “used” by the “background noise” of the Revolutionary Communist Party and RCP Youth Brigade. My “favourite” mantra of the left (and Marx) “from each according to his means, to each according to his needs”. Pathetic ‘idiotis’!!
I’ll try to think of some catchy new slogans for your “peace rallys”, OK?

  14. Scott Says:

I love the clip of Our Leader that CNN has been playing all day about “They target nations whose behavior they believe they can change through violence.”

And how do we react to this? By being violent.

The mythical “they” got their wish. And we get screwed. Thanks a lot, rubes.

  15. Ryan Neat Says:

“Thank you, peaceniks!!! Peace! Love! Prius! I LOVE the link to http://www.worldwontwait!!!! Wow!!! ”

So you believe torture, violence, hatred, destroying the environment and killing your fellow man is a better human aspiration? That would certainly confirm my assessment that you’re a freak and a terrorist!

“So good to know you are easily and thoroughly “used” by the “background noise” of the Revolutionary Communist Party and RCP Youth Brigade. ”

Wow, haven’t you heard that islamic terrorism is the ‘new communist’ threat? It’s what your fuhrer said today - you should really pay more attention. So please expalin to me how ‘peace’ and ‘violent overthrow’ are related? Isn’t peace the opposite of violent overthrow - or did you miss that you stupid windbag?

“My “favourite” mantra of the left (and Marx) “from each according to his means, to each according to his needs”. Pathetic ‘idiotis’!!”

Actually that’s a jewish value system. Those who are blessed are supposed to give accordingly. Where do you think Marx got that idea you stupid dingbat!

    Here’s a quote:

“The beginning of Parshas Ki Savo discusses Vidui Ma’asros [the Tithing Confession]. At the completion of the three-year Ma’aser [tithing] cycle a person must recite a “confession” and give an accounting of whether he has been judicious in properly distributing all the various agricultural gifts as required. The person must be able to proclaim, “I have removed all the sacred portions from my house. I have given the appropriate portions to the Levite and to the orphan and widow, following all the commandments You prescribed to us. I have not violated your commandments, and have not forgotten anything.” [Devorim 26: 13].”

“I’ll try to think of some catchy new slogans for your “peace rallys”, OK?”

Sounds like your time would be better served trying to come up with a ‘pro war’ slogan. That embarrassing and utter failure you guys produced with only 400 people NATIONWIDE was pathetic! You and your movement are just a bunch of stupid afraid and selfish freaks who have no sense of what it means to be a human being. You’re nothing but unamerican and hateful terrorists!

  16. Zookeeper Says:

Aphrodite, when are you signing up to fight in Iraq?

  17. Marie Says:

In the future this can go down as stupid president’s day. All the children will plant shrubs in memory of the America that used to be.
This guy contradicts himself spins around so often he is like whirling dervish.

  18. mighty aphrodite Says:

#17 - My husband and I are both veterans - by the way, you are welcome! (Maybe that’s why we are both pretty good shots.) My youngest brother just returned from his third deployment since 9/11 - once to Afghanistan, and twice to Iraq. By the way, he said, “You’re welcome!”.

  19. shrummybuddy Says:

    this is a great post

  20. Gen. Lectric Says:

Corporate America thanks you Mighty Afro ,Baby Daddy, and you too Bro.

  21. Terrytheturtle Says:

And the families of the dead people in the London bombings, the families of the dead in Madrid and the families of the dead tourists in Bali, thank you too.

The State department has given up counting the explosion of terror attacks around the world since the invasion of Iraq. Thank you America.

  22. progressive and proud Says:

Aphro is just another “duped” troll. She was used up and discarded by her party, yet, cannot admit it or face that fact. She, for some reason, spends her time here completely wasting it. She props up criminals and uses patriotism as an excuse.

She has no idea what the majority of Americans think or just doesn’t care.

What’s with these trolls, they are always LOLing or saying Thank You. That is truly obtuse.

  23. mighty aphrodite Says:

PP, or should I say, “insulated Northeast Lib” - if the majority agree with YOU and your “thoughtful” comrades, why are YOU on the sidelines???? Turtle Terry, a guilt stricken, self hating, guilt bloated Amerikkkan - pathetic….. Watching you shoot yourself in the foot repeatedly makes me glad you’re not on “our” side - whewwwww!!!!!

  24. Smedley D. Butler Says:

War Protest - Nov 10 2005 Take a day off! – Please Read

If you feel, as the majority of Americans and people throughout the world do, that the war in Iraq is wrong, and you wish you had a way to show the Bush Administration, the Government of the United States, and the world, how you feel about it, then join us in our world wide walk out on November 10th 2005.

Show the world how you feel, and just how many of us feel this way. Let’s drive the point home by taking away from them their most precious item; money.

On November 10th 2005, unless you hold a position which people rely upon in the event of an emergency (you work at a hospital, a firemen, policemen etc), don’t go to work. Try not to drive your car; don’t watch T.V.; don’t use the internet. Stay at home. Read a book. Play with your kids. Engage in a hobby.

Plan a vacation day at work. Call in sick. Use your best judgment on how to take this day off.

If we don’t get their attention this way, we’ll just do it again, until we do.

If the people speak, and speak together, they have to listen.

Please email this to as many of your friends and colleagues as you wish/can.

  25. Terry C. Potter Says:

Darn it Smedley, you guys picked the same day as us. We thought Nov.10th would be the day where we would show our support for the War effort. We plan on showing this support by making sure we all makes it to work that day, even if we are a little ill. No car pooling either, we’ll all be driving individual vehicles wherever possible. Oh yeah, and we will just keep doing this every day too, until you guys start to pay attention and listen to reason.

  26. mighty aphrodite Says:

#27 - I’m with you, Terry. The kindly, but politically naive people who make up 95% of the contributors here, would just as soon sleep with the enemy - rather than containing or killing them. These contemporary “Peace,Love, Prius flower ‘children’” fail to recognize that you cannot make peace with people who wish you death - and are willing to go to extreme measures to kill civilians. They love to Monday morning q-back and shrilly scream, “you armed the terrorists,” but fail to acknowledge that AT THE TIME those fighters in Afghanistan were fighting our largest enemy. Being sadly crushed by the fall of the Soviet Union is something several have not recovered from - like people who support “peace efforts” backed by the Revolutionary Communist Party. Pitiful!!
