When All Else Fails, Start Fear Mongering

When All Else Fails, Start Fear Mongering»

America is losing confidence in President Bush. A Newsweek poll reveals that “across the board…his most visible policies only pull the support of a third of the country: on the economy, 35 percent approve; on Iraq, 33 percent; on energy policy, 28 percent.” When all else fails, start fear mongering. Some excerpts from President Bush’s speech today:

All these separate images of destruction and suffering that we see on the news can seem like random and isolated acts of madness. Innocent men and women and children have died simply because they boarded the wrong train or worked in the wrong building or checked into the wrong hotel.

And while the killers choose their victims indiscriminately, their attacks serve a clear and focused ideology, a set of beliefs and goals that are evil but not insane.
….

With greater economic and military and political power, the terrorists would be able to advance their stated agenda: to develop weapons of mass destruction, to destroy Israel, to intimidate Europe, to assault the American people and to blackmail our government into isolation.

….

No act of ours invited the rage of the killers, and no concession, bribe or act of appeasement would change or limit their plans for murder.

….
In truth, they have endless ambitions of imperial domination and they wish to make everyone powerless except themselves…They seek to end dissent in every form and to control every aspect of life and to rule the soul itself.

Defeating a militant network is difficult because it thrives like a parasite on the suffering and frustration of others.
….

[W]e’re determined to deny weapons of mass destruction to outlaw regimes and to their terrorist allies who would use them without hesitation.

….

Evil men who want to use horrendous weapons against us are working in deadly earnest to gain them.

…..

This would be a pleasant world, but it’s not the world we live in. The enemy is never tired, never sated, never content with yesterday’s brutality.

What a bunch of crap. Did Rove write this?

  2. Peace Lover Says:

“They seek to end dissent in every form and to control every aspect of life and to rule the soul itself.”

Does this not sound like exactly what the religious Neo-Cons have been and are doing at this very moment?

  3. park Says:

Well, I disapproved of Bush’s energy policy yesterday, but now that I read this, I’m pretty scared, and that energy policy is looking better and better. And Democrats are looking weaker and wussier. I think I’m in love with that manly cowboy. I love how he walks with his arms out and nods at those he passes, just like they’re important, too.

  4. Patriot Says:

The “imperial domination” idea is a sham. These guys are anti-technology. IF, and that’s a big if, they want to dominate it is with the spread of their ideas.
Bush could take a cue from that thought if he gave a s*it.
My overall impression is muslims, not just radicals, want to be left alone.

their objective is and always has been to divide the sheeple, keep them from deveoping any real spirituality and above all, keep them from uniting in favor and furtherance of OUR COMMON INTERESTS.

Time to follow the mandate of the Declaration of Independence and abolish and/or reform this government.

I think that’s where Rove has been. Scanning blogs looking for a clue.

  8. Zookeeper Says:

Well, yankeluh, we all know Georgie didn’t write it!

Yes, Peace Lover, exactly. I kept thinking Georgie was talking in his speech about all the crap he and his administration do. Admittedly, I was not giving the speech my full attention. I can’t stand the sound of his voice.

  9. FarmerMe Says:

So Bush’s response to his failing policies, a bumbling war effort and outrageous spending is… a PR campaign?

People have stared to see through this crap. We want solutions, not jabber.

“With greater economic and military and political power, the terrorists would be able to advance their stated agenda: to develop weapons of mass destruction, to destroy Israel, to intimidate Europe, to assault the American people and to blackmail our government into isolation.”

It ain’t paranoia if people are shooting at you. He’s not fear mongering anyway. He’s simply setting the stage and getting his ducks in a row for a limited nuclear attack on Iran and Syria. It’s about time too.

Personally I don’t like the idea of fundamentalist moon god worshiping head choppers who want to rule the world getting their hands on a hydrogen bomb. I think that would suck. Your mileage may differ.

    Incredible.

  14. Amy Says:

And our bombing of Iraq and Afghanistan hasn’t done the same thing???

And while the killers choose their victims indiscriminately, their attacks serve a clear and focused ideology, a set of beliefs and goals that are evil but not insane.”

    War = terrorism!

  15. JimB Says:

#11 - And the effort to put down the terrorist is failing. Staying the course only works if you’re on the right course to begin with. We need new leadership and new direction, and a nuke on Iran won’t help anymore than napalm on Saigon or Nazi bombs on London. You can’t fight a war of ideology with weapons. And you’re right, a fundamentalist moon with an H-bomb does suck. Have you looked at our president?

  16. Patriot Says:

You want to see the downfall of Islamic gov’t.?

    Let them assemble.
    Let them have weapons.

    Let them err.
    Then retaliate.

Oil is death. Oil is terror. Oil is war.

  17. Elvis Says:

    What a crock of sh!t!

This is so far out of hand it is absolutely sickening. Who does this jack off think he is talking to?

“The militants believe that controlling one country will rally the Muslim masses, enabling them to overthrow all moderate governments in the region and establish a radical Islamic empire that spans from Spain to Indonesia.” He claims to know what they are thinking. Are you kidding me?

Okay Mr. FnCK STICK PRESIDENT! What am I thinking?

  18. Patriot Says:

    Elvis,

is correct. Bush will have to answer for these bold statements.

  19. Innocent Bystander Says:

Keep talking George…..the disconnect between real problems (see the Gulf Cost) and your imaginary “War on Terror” grows every time you open your mouth.

WOT….is it a War on Terror or a Waste of Time?

  20. Southwest Bob Says:

Did you ever hear the story about Chicken Little? Well, that must be one of bushco’s favorite books….well, just after his Pet Goat book. . . . While it may be true that telling a lie and espeically a BIG lie over and over can cause some people to believe it, there is a shelf life when evidence exists to counter the lie. bushco has now reached the “Chicken Little” stage of his political life. He doesn’t realize that the sky hasn’t fallen yet and believes (I think because HE is the prez) that people trust him and will believe every word coming from his lips.

If it is true that he surrounds himself with only “yes” people, then he will be the last person to know that he’s lying. However, I believe, bushco actually believes this crap. Rather then using alcohol to alter reality, this prez is using make believe terror to justify his stupid and insane actions. If he didn’t beleive this crap, he would have to admit that he screwed up and we know he’ll never admit to the smallest error on his part.

  21. Albert Says:

Even if you grant him these claims, he is clearly not the man to lead our country in these times. He is bankrupting us - financially, militarily, morally. He does not have an effective plan to accomplish anything except media relations. While the Republicans talk a good game (for their audience) they are weakening America on all fronts.

  22. Innocent Bystander Says:

  23. Jacques Says:

Where are the American people in all of this scheming?

Are they willing to financing this lunatic?

  26. Gary Kleppe Says:

The first corporate owned president, nominates the frist privately owned supreme court justice, and then announces through the corporate media, that perpetual corporate war for Israel is a US priority.

While I’m as anti-Bush as the next guy, it’s ridiculous to suggest that his is the first administration to be in the pocket of corporations. Maybe someday we’ll manage to elect one that isn’t.

  27. blindprogressive Says:

If any person not associated with the right wing believes this bs, we’re in a heap of trouble. It is time for a Democrat to step up to the plate and display some spine and hold a press conference to deflate all the bs the president laid on us today. WHERE’S THE FREAKING PLANS!!

  29. Barry Ragin Says:

Defeating a militant network is difficult because it thrives like a parasite on the suffering and frustration of others.

  30. chuck Says:

What Bush needs oh so desperately right now is a good old-fashioned terror attack on the scale of 9/11 or greater. Nothing else will help his poll numbers at this point.

This essential truth, more than any other, scares me. Not his phantom threats, but the fact that he desperately needs one of those threats to be realized in order to maintain his hold on power.

  31. Jon Says:

The Bush speech continues the same Conflation Strategy:

    9/11 = Iraq
    Iraq=Al Qaeda
Al Qaeda = Checheb rebels, Hezbollah, Abu Sayyef, Hamas, etc.

It’s just a continuation of Bush’s Global War on Error.

  32. Mary Says:

Where are the specifics? If I gave a presentation at work that was full of allusions instead of FACTS like that speech I’d get fired. So when you’re talking to the kool aid drinkers, point out that Bush almost never puts facts in his speeches. You know why? Because someone like Joe Wilson will come around and shoot if full of holes. Someone do the research - Did the quantity of fact based statements go down in Bushes speeches after Joe W’s op ed? Hmmmm…

Another friend was grabbed by the neck, pulled to the floor until he ‘repented’ his sins!, he was 8 years old.

  36. SE. Says:

Otherwise…we would have had one by now.

  38. Ed Deevy Says:

The depressing thought is that Bush may believe all this delusional shit about “terrorists.” Maybe the Bush handlers believe we are an nation of idiots. What motives the resistance in Iraq is pretty obvious. They want us out. It’s that simple.

  39. Arliss Says:

Mr. Bush, your scare tactics are NOT going to work ANYMORE!

  40. Ryan Neat Says:

Republican values all stem from fear. Fear of taxes. Fear of poor people. Fear of REMAINING poor or middle class. Fear of other ‘races’. Fear of foreigners. Fear of terrorists. Everything about the republican system is based on fear of something. And ironically republican values INCREASE poverty and dissent against them internationally - thereby feeding terrorism, warfare and instability.

Be careful of what you fear, because that will come to dominate your life…

  44. Whiterose Says:

I’d wager if we 1) got our asses out of there and 2) dumped the billions we are wasting in the Middle East into alternative energy sources like biofuel and grassolean (vegetable-oil-based engine fuel), and 3) quit buying Middle East oil altogether, you’d see a pretty quick drying-up both of anti-US hostilities AND their resources to wage war.

Conveniently, the alleged insanity of the original suggestion will go bopping gleefully down the ol’ memory hole.

In the original Hebrew the word for kill was used as “murder”. I’m not switching versions I’m telling you how the Israelites understood the commandment. It would be hypocritical of God to mean “No Killing Allowed” and then praise King David for his bravery and victories on the battlefield. It would be hypocritical of God to tell the Israelites to go out and kill the enemy, which He did.

You’re trying to make it say what you want it to say and I’m here to correct your mistake. “Thou Shalt Do No Murder” is correct. End of story.

Don’t bother engaging Trolls on Moral issues.

It’s all a Rovian distraction tactic designed to take us off the scent of their crimes.

    Comment by Plunger

Yeah, it’s a tactic all right. We like to hit you with Moral issues because frankly, you suck at those and it makes you look like the mean little commieratbastardmofo’s you are. It’s just a fact of life. We’re better than you. That’s why we win.

  88. Elvis Says:

    mighty aphrodite,

It appears that you believe that my saying that “communism was a red herring” implies that I myself am a communist.

You would have to be incredibly ignorant to:
    1. Think such a thing.
    2. Think you know me enough to categorize me.

You’ve obviously done both, so can you provide me/us with some proof that you are not, in fact, and ignorant person?

Political dissent does not equal “communist” or “anti-American” as the “right” seem to want everyone to believe. This is what I meant by a “red herring.” It was used by “them” in order to get the nation and nations behind “their” causes. Hell, I even believed it up until my last year in the Marine Corps.

“Unhappy are the people who need heroes.”

  89. DoubleD Says:

    Oh. My. God.

Anybody recognize the re-hash of The Domino Theory?

  90. Sara Says:

Hey, don’t feed the trolls… I think I-Right-I and Mighty Aphrodite are the same person, notice they always come to the party together? With one brain between them…
Also, it is CLASSIC Karl Rove to proactively accuse the other guys of what you are doing. Therefore the eerie simialarity of the speech to the reality… No surprise there.

  91. BostonBeacon Says:

This guy should PAY for his air time. All he does is rejustify false/delusional ideas. “War on terror” violence is on display in more than Iraq (Spain, London, Bali et al)…it’s world-wide movement that can only really be countered by behind-the-scenes intelligence-gathering (followed by action to eliminate, naturally), not smash-mouth with gun-butts to everybody in sight to clear areas (making them “safe”…until tomorrow) in Middle East. Iraq is effectively a wart on the world’s skin…

If this nationn continues on its current track, there will be hell to pay (and we as world residents, will be paying a big part)….if there EVER were a time for “God Bless (HELP) America…”

  92. Mary Poppin Says:

I-RIGHT-I If you love killing so much, Why don’t you go and fight in Iraq? Who do you think you are to say You are better than us. You are a totally moron.

    Comment by Mary Poppin

I didn’t say I love killing. I said it is sometimes necessary for survival. You’re a Darwinist right? What’s your problem with killing?

How dare I? It’s easy. You support the party of death. Death to old folks and the infirm, death to the unborn, death to American soldiers fighting for our country, death to our Country by giving aid and comfort to our enemies. It’s hardly a stretch of the word moral to suggest that people who do not think, speak and act as you do are better people. Lets face it, people on the Filthy Left in America are just bad Americans.

  97. Elvis Says:

    I-RIGHT-I,

    I’m waiting.

  98. Adentintime Says:

In his speeches in the runup to the invasion of Iraq G W Bush said, “We will bring peace to the people of Iraq.” To paraphrase Douglas Adams, this is a definition of “peace” with which I was not familiar.
All we have left of the president’s boasts about dealing with terrorism is its use in FUD to further our acceptance of his designed bankrupting of the Federal Government. Once big government is gone who will stand up to big business?

  99. The Chameleon Says:

    To I-RIGHT-I:

Chances are, you thrive on the kind of assaults you provoke, but the fact that you are zealously quoting as reputable and relevant a text that was written by ignorant, fearful men, which was designed to control other ignorant, fearful men and (mostly) women, thousands of years ago, without the benefit of even Faux News’ Fact-Checking Department, and which was translated and retranslated many times by many other ignorant, fearful men to further their mythology and their agendas, discredits anything else you would have to say. Consider yourself shut down.

  100. Elvis Says:

    I-RIGHT-I,

Come on. Let’s hear it. What then do you call the “killing” of innocent people? People who were not trying to kill or hurt you in any way?

    I-RIGHT-I,

Okay dip-sh!t, we’ll play by your rules.

What then do you call the “killing” of innocent people? People who were not trying to kill or hurt you in any way?

    Comment by Elvis

Collateral damage. It’s an unfortunate fact of modern urban warfare brought on by fighting an enemy that infiltrates the civil sector and carries out its dastardly death dealing behind the skirts of women and the playgrounds of children.

What do you call the Islamofucktards that are intentionally targeting school busses? Let me tell you what YOU call them. You call them freedom fighters. I call them dead meat.

The fact is, in case you didn’t know it, we are losing most of our boys in Iraq because Bush is too big a pussy to use airpower to clean out those Sunni towns where all the killers are congregating. Bush doesn’t want to hurt those “innocent” people who are supporting, hiding, feeding and joining the killers. If it were me in the oval office I believe I’d move heaven and earth to make sure we never use a platoon of troops to do what one great big bomb could do. But that’s just me.

  102. Innocent Bystander Says:

    some guy @ 57

Sorry…I left off the rest of his quote.

“He’s simply setting the stage and getting his ducks in a row for a limited nuclear attack on Iran and Syria. It’s about time too.”

So he is sick in the head, but no sicker than the AWOL chickenhawk who just might use them as the ultimate distraction to save his worthless, criminal ass.

A limited nuclear war? Is this what the Intelligent Designer had in mind?

  103. Mary Poppin Says:

I-RIGHT-I THIS IS ALL I HAVE TO SAY TO YOU. YOU ARE A SICK RUDE PERSON. I HOPE YOU DON’T HAVE ANY CHILDREN BECAUSE HEAVEN HELP US ALL. GOOD BY!!!

  104. Jamie Says:

This speach is beyond pathetic. Everytime this WH gets worried about the polling numbers, we get a “major” speach about Iraq. But the speaches no longer have any positive effect on the poll numbers because the American people — thank god — are finally waking up to the fact that what this man says and what he does are often very different. Katrina was a powerful object lesson on that front. As the admin officials were talking about how wonderful the relief and rescue operations were going, the press was showing the reality in powerful, full-color images. The language used by this WH in describing the relief and rescue efforts is strangely the same language bush uses in these speaches to tell us how wonderful things are going in Iraq. 70% of the country now has bush’s number on this.

    These speaches are pathetic.

  105. I-RIGHT-I Says:

    Consider yourself shut down.

    Comment by The Chameleon

If you think you’ve got the skill set to shut me down loser then give it your best shot. But if that stupid fundy-atheist complaint about Biblical text is all you’ve got I think you’ll be sent home to your momma in short order. The fact is, The Hebrew text of the old testament is about the oldest and purest text extant and considered such by the best minds (not all Christian or Jewish)in that field of study. The Dead Sea Scrolls testify to the fact that the text of today is the same as it was 2000 years ago. Next.

  106. maxmom Says:

I don’t have to listen to any of Bush’s speeches about terrorism - they simply go like this: 9/11, 9/11, 9/11, Iraq, central front in the war against terror, freedom, freedom, freedom, it’s hard work, 9/11, freedom, Iraq, 9/11, evil, freedom … yada, yada, yada.

  107. Elvis Says:

just remember … we’re commenting to a speech made by the family friend of the people responsible for the World Trade Center offensive …who’s leader was intentionally let go in Afganistan to run to the unreasonable safety of Pakistan. The same Administration that would now propose to protect us that never looked into the anthrax distribution in our mails any more seriously than they looked into who treasonously revealed the name of an active C.I.A. operative who was at the time working to gather information to protect our country. (he) and his new supreme court nominee are shown going over the morning reports that stated we’d better be wary of a strike, possibly by hijacked planes, in the New York, DC area. It would be my guess that mister slippery and his crime cartel have something wicked this way comin’ … pass the crayons

  111. The Chameleon Says:

Fortunately, those of us here equipped with even the minimum (ability to reason, opposable thumbs, bipedal) see through its tactics and appreciate your contribution to the discussion.

  112. Elvis Says:

    I-RIGHT-I,

    Okay, here is “next.”

The people who wrote your “book” actually believed the world was flat. They actually believed that earth was the center of the universe. That women are not worth as much as men. That slavery was okay. That killing children, or selling your wife was actually what you should do in certain situations.

These people are who you consider intelligent? No wonder you think Bush is “right.”

  113. Elvis Says:

I wrote you a book. What? Not the answer you were looking for? Sorry but civilian death in a time of war is not something that can be helped, especially when the terrorists use the population as a shield. The “willing” population I might add. I guess you could say they are really not so “innocent” after all? How innocent were the Germans we killed?

No Elvis, the ancient Hebrews did not believe the earth was flat. In fact the “flat earth” nonsense you get from infidel.com is a myth made up by losers that think like you. Remind me sometime and I’ll give you the details.

  122. Elvis Says:

    I-RIGHT-I,

Whether it can be helped or not, by the definition of your “religion,” murder is a sin.

How can you possibly sit here and claim that civilian deaths are justified simply because they happen in a time of war, without actually getting over there and pulling the trigger yourself, or maybe send your son or daughter over there to come back in a 2 foot by 2 foot by 1 foot box.

    You are a sick individual.

  126. The Witch Says:

Um, and this is just a suggestion, has anyone ever looked at the translations of OBL’s speeches to see if his rhetoric is at all similar? Because while I certainly don’t think that his motives are the same or his methods are reasonable, sane, or at all human, I DO note that there are similarities in the elements of the psychological warfare done on either side.

Asbestos suit on, troll bombs away!

  127. Marie Says:

Bush is a fraud. His speech was a fabrication of his own lies and hallucinations, distortions of fact, and a rewriting of history. He wants America to be afraid. He won the election on fear; he is losing credibility every week, so the time is ripe to revive the fear tactic. If we are attacked again, it will be because of Bush and his policies, not inspite of them.
Neither he nor his speechwriters can see that he is the American taliban. Preaching about hate, retribution, killing and victory, like he is Genghis Khan — except Khan was a warrior — Bush only talks like one. He himself is a coward.

  128. modernredman Says:

I Right I has the will to refute anything anyone says, revealing bit by bit his true self, a self-righteous fundamentalist whose better values have been subsumed to support a nationalistic/xenophobic death cult bent on imperial control of oil and the Middle East. Kill Iraqi women and children? Thats ok with I Right I, they are the declared enemy who dare to own resources the US covets. Anything can be justified by warmongers, even the use of religion on both sides, that’s obvious.
Taking a stand to seek justice even when your government/religion is wrong is a hard thing to do. One voice in this post mentioned taking all that money used for war and put it towards a sustainable fuel supply would pre-empt much of the need for a war on “terrorism”, But we know that will never happen in this society because those in power want to continue making obscene profits from oil and war. The American people and those who are the victims of your oil wars pay the price, not your rich leaders.

  137. Jason Says:

“we stand for democracy and peace”

Oh man, I’m tearing up (with laughter)…
Yeah, Bush stands for peace, yet he’s the current face of never-ending war…

“Osama bin Laden, has called on Muslims to dedicate, quote, their “resources, sons and money to driving the infidels out of their lands.”"

What has Bush asked of Americans?
The military is a noble profession is it not?
    Not for the Bush twins.

” They hit us, and expect us to run.”

No, they expect us to die.
That’s what we expect them to do.
    Silly war, isn’t it?

“And what this man who grew up in wealth and privilege considers good for poor Muslims is that they become killers and suicide bombers. He assures them that his — that this is the road to paradise — though he never offers to go along for the ride.”

What Dubya, this this man who grew up in wealth and privilege, considers good for poor Americans is that they become killers and homicide bombers. But he never goes along for the ride.

“Like the ideology of communism, our new enemy teaches that innocent individuals can be sacrificed to serve a political vision.”

Like the ideology of communism, the PNAC and the Bush admin. teaches that innocent individuals can be sacrificed to serve a political vision.

“They achieved their goal, for a time, in Afghanistan. Now they’ve set their sights on Iraq. ”

And thanks to Dubya and the PNAC, they have a fighting chance to reach that goal. Under Saddam Hussein, they wouldn’t have had a chance. Thanks Dubya.

“Defeating the militant network is difficult, because it thrives, like a parasite, on the suffering and frustration of others.”

And Dubya made sure that more and more people are frustrated and suffering.

“The radicals exploit local conflicts to build a culture of victimization, in which someone else is always to blame and violence is always the solution.”

So are you saing that violence is not the solution?

“And they exploit modern technology to multiply their destructive power.”

We’d better gear up our Amish Army then, if you’re opposed to that.

“Some have also argued that extremism has been strengthened by the actions of our coalition in Iraq, claiming that our presence in that country has somehow caused or triggered the rage of radicals.”

No, they’re saying that it created more “suffering and frustration” which creates more terrorists “because it thrives like a parasite” on these things. And extremism has been strengthened NOT weakened by our actions in Iraq. If we had done certain very crucial things in the immediate aftermath, like involving locals in the reconstruction and not shooting civilians on sight for not understanding English commands, then extremism had a chance of weakening. No chance of that now at all, no matter what we do.

“The government of Russia did not support Operation Iraqi Freedom, and yet the militants killed more than 180 Russian schoolchildren in Beslan.”

I love the usage of the word THE here. He ties in Chechnyan separatists with Al-Qeada almost as expertly as he tied Saddam to 9/11. Damn right Russia didn’t support the war in Iraq and Chechnyan separatists had jack nothing to do with 9/11 or anything that has to do with the US. It was aimed at Russia for its atrocities in Chechnya. Nothing can excuse what they did, but these people have nothing to do with our fight against AQ.

” No act of ours invited the rage of the killers”

No, of course not. A century of US/British meddling in Arab countries over oil has nothing to do with their hate for us. That’s why Switzerland has so many terrorist bombings, because they are free! BTW-bombings in Bali were targetting Australians.

“Fourth, we’re determined to deny the militants control of any nation, which they would use as a home base and a launching pad for terror. ”

Except the militant US of course and their new launchpad, Iraq.

“Our goal is to defeat the terrorists and their allies at the heart of their power — and so we will defeat the enemy in Iraq.”

Iraq is the heart of their power?
“We will create enemies in Iraq, and then defeat them…”

“Wars are not won without sacrifice — and this war will require more sacrifice, more time, and more resolve.”

Yet Dubya will make no sacrifice. But he and his buddies will make a fortune off this thing. The longer it goes, the more they make.

“The terrorists are as brutal an enemy as we’ve ever faced. They’re unconstrained by any notion of our common humanity, or by the rules of warfare.”

    What? Are they cheating?

“We’re standing with dissidents and exiles against oppressive regimes, because we know that the dissidents of today will be the democratic leaders of tomorrow. ”

God, we can only hope so.
Oh, you thought I was talking about the Middle East?

Look Bush worshippers, if Dubya can’t see the hypocrisy in his words, hopefully you will eventually and maybe you’ll finally see Dubya for the fraud he is. Just remember that when he asks you to sacrifice, ask him if he’s coming along for the ride.

Well how about going after and getting bin Laden. After all, our CIA chief has an “excellent idea” of where he is. That for starters. Who says negotiate with bin Laden?? We are currently negotiating with not only terrorists, but terrorist nation-states such as Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, etc.

  145. Massachusetts Liberal Says:

Mary, Nice point (#32). From the excerpts I’ve been reading, today’s speech is manipulative and dishonest. (What a surprise.) It’s all tired war rhetoric and amateur psychology posing as clarification.

  146. Elvis Says:

    Luck Fiberals,

#152, there is as much truth about terrorist trying to take over the world as there was about communism doing the same thing after world war II. Bin Laden belongs to the CIA, there is no need to negotiate with him.

Look at it this way: Osama Bin Laden blows up buildings in Saudi Arabia, the Bin Laden Group (Family construction company) get the contract to rebuild it.

Osama Bin Laden blows up the towers (or at least takes credit for it), and we invade Afghanistan and Iraq (soon to be Iran). Osama was also used by the CIA to start the conflict in the Balkans in the 90’s. He’s just a puppet, a stooge.

Would you suddenly become a Muslim just because we left Iraq and Afghanistan? Do you not have control over your own mind?

Do you think bin Laden carries all his money with him? You go to the banks that cater to that piece of shit and tell them all their U.S. holdings and bank accounts will be frozen and/or seized unless they release all his assets to a neutral entity or something similar. Or to the U.S. government for that matter to pay for his actions. You tell the Saudi government point blank and matter of factly that support of him or any other radical entity will come with dire consequences. And they have hundreds of billions of dollars here too. Maybe it’s not a perfect plan but, it’s a hell of a lot better than the one we have now!

As for anyone making me become a muslim. No man has that capability over me. Maybe they do over you because you’re scared and weak, but never will I ever succomb to any religion, much less Islam, at the behest of another!

Apparently the fear mongering technique will always work on a certain segment of the population, as illustrated by 158 and other posts.

    Ridge reveals clashes on alerts
    by Mimi Hall, USA TODAY

WASHINGTON — The Bush administration periodically put the USA on high alert for terrorist attacks even though then-Homeland Security chief Tom Ridge argued there was only flimsy evidence to justify raising the threat level, Ridge now says.

Ridge, who resigned Feb. 1, said Tuesday that he often disagreed with administration officials who wanted to elevate the threat level to orange, or “high” risk of terrorist attack, but was overruled.

His comments at a Washington forum describe spirited debates over terrorist intelligence and provide rare insight into the inner workings of the nation’s homeland security apparatus.

Ridge said he wanted to “debunk the myth” that his agency was responsible for repeatedly raising the alert under a color-coded system he unveiled in 2002.

“More often than not we were the least inclined to raise it,” Ridge told reporters. “Sometimes we disagreed with the intelligence assessment. Sometimes we thought even if the intelligence was good, you don’t necessarily put the country on (alert). … There were times when some people were really aggressive about raising it, and we said, ‘For that?’

Anyone want to take bets on how many of these rehashed War-Is-The-Answer “speeches” Bush will make before he leaves office?

I thought the war in Iraq was supposed to make us safer from terrorist attacks. I don’t see with today’s reports that anything has changed. More fear, more BULLSHIT!

New Yorkers–if you want my advice–follow Sean Hannity and Bill O’Reilly to work.

Echoes of 1984 abound, Plunger. In particular these pathetic “speeches” sound like they were cobbled together by a kaleidoscope machine, the one invented to spew out pop songs and pulp fiction.

    Dear Think Progress;

Why was my post/comment previous displayed as #151 deleted? Given that you require me to supply my email address to post, I would at least have expected to find an explanation there. I have not. Was it too long? Did it fail to meet some minimum level of inflammatory rhetoric? Was the fact that I both agreed and disagreed with the same person on a number of the points of the discussion offensive? Was actually attempting to discuss the differing points of view somehow viewed as ‘harassment’?

Some form of explanation for this removal would be greatly appreciated.

    Sincerely,
    Bill McDonough

How dumb does Dumbya think WE are? WE will never be as DUMB as he is….The only ones who had “endless ambitions of IMPERIAL DOMINATION” (for Iraq’s oil) was the Emperior himself, the war mongers in the executive branch, some members of congress, the authors of PNAC, “k” street lobbists, which includes everything from the oil industry, to defense contractors and all else in between..!

They just don’t “get it”. They pulled the “bait and switch” with the Afghan War, and tried to link Iraq to that conflict. They lied about it,now they’re paying the price! THEY HAVE LOST ALL SUPPORT from the majority of the people!

Nice try Dumbya, a fancy speech ain’t gonna cut it! You and ol’ Karl better go back to the “drawing board”
