OKAY! What does anyone suppose we do as a nation to reclaim our path, as we have been led severly off-track? Everyone is in a lull of "oh-well" or '08 is our year, what gives? Who can we go to for regime change?

mr. BILL mcD i believe i've read all those right wing excuses/answers as far as failing to question dem SAWDEES, yet for such a tragedy like 9/11 where war was waged virtually unopposed, you dont think it would have given just a weeeeeeebit of closure if not evidence of something if bin laden's family was questioned? o yea they "publicly" severed ties with him huh...kinda like your brother caught porking your girl (not you specifically just generalizing), there might be a lil tie severing there but he's still your brother...or worse yet you feeling resentmet towards your more handsome/smarter/wittier relative for having "radical liberal views" he may not be over your house every sunday for football but he sure as hell will be at your daughter's wedding...

Do yourself a favor and read about Thomas Jefferson and the Barbary Pirates. It's interesting, it's kind of fun and it answers your question.

Just be glad our leaders and people didn't think like you when Hitler and Stalin and Mao came into power. You need to get over this French Pussification thing you've got going and grow some balls boy.

"No Sugar, cowardly Democrats like Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton who did NOTHING after we were attacked are the reason for the terror attacks on the USA."

If one blames Clinton and Jimmy Carter for the 1992 attacks, than wouldn't the 1992 attacks never have happend? Im sure that it is in the best interest of every President to make the nation strong and secure; not to weaken. The terror attacks on other countries, is not because one country is weak, it is because that country has proclaimed a since of pride and has no respect for other countries. Terrorist exist everywhere, there isn't anything anyone will do to stop them...

Stay in school, you still can't read and comprehend. I blame your idiot parents and the teacher's union.

Bin Laden said that because we didn't do anything in Iran after the embassy take over and we did nothing in Arabia after the Cobal Towers bombing and nothing after Mogadishu etc, etc, that we did not have the will to fight. He's a school yard bully. Everyone knows that the first thing you do is go up and knock the lights out of a bully. After that he knows.

The ever so sensitive Jimmy "never met a tyrant he didn't like" Carter and Billy "Blow Job" Clinton failed us and gave the terrorists reason to believe they could win. What part of "don't be a pussy Frenchman" do you not understand?

"No act of ours invited the rage of the killers..."

Westernization in the Middle East played the biggest role in the terror attacks on America. So presumably it was America's acts that caused the rage of the killers. Since, one of the terrorist involved with the 9/11 attacks stated in his biblography that what ticked him off was that a McDonalds was built too close to Mecca. On Account of, Mecca is the Holy Land for Muslims, therefore having a McDonalds shows disrespect to the Muslim people. Unless the terrorist groups are just looking for a way to justify the cause.

IRI:

I'm twisting scripture? The passage is about the dangers inherint in clinging to this life even if it means abandoning the principles taught by JC. If you can make scripture say anything you like, then please, I enjoin you: Find me something said by Christ (not any of the fallible men who came after him) that justify what you advocated: the wholesale slaughter of civilians. That's what nuking Syria and Iran would entail, after all.

Do I think that killing someone who's trying to kill me is evil? No. But I do think that killing millions who aren't out of some paranoid hard-on for a big, dramatic 'boom' is.

Am *I* the one twisting scripture, or are the religious leaders in this country who peddle hate and violence, while asking for money? I don't recall a single 'Augustus Caesar should be assassinated' or 'Please send me your drachma now' in the gospels.

As for 'working in the industry'... well, I could say that I'm God Almighty, but it doesn't make it true. You have facts to back it up, let's see 'em. Otherwise, I humbly submit that you, and all of your ilk are simply quite full of 100% pure Oscar Meyer bologna.

The non-kosher kind.

"To Jim, IRI, and MC;

But at what cost? I would rather lose my life adhering to the principles I consider to be ‘good’ than live on, having made use of evil ways to protect myself."

I can't argue with a man who believes that protecting his country, his family and his own life is evil.

"He who would save his life will lose it, but he who gives up his life will live forever in the Kingdom of Heaven. Sound at all familiar?"

Completely out of context. I can make the Bible say anything I want it to as well. I suggest you get a new Bible teacher the one you've got is twisting scripture in order to give our enemy an advantage. Not unlike how the ratbastardcommiemofo's in this country twist our laws for the same purpose.

"And IRI, about those refineries… the companies haven’t just held off on building new ones for economic reasons, but also for practical ones. We are at or almost at maximum pumping capacity. Even the Saudis are pumping oil at or near their upper limit. Global supply has maxxed out. In the next 10-15 years, sustainable production levels may well begin to slip a little. You can’t refine oil you’re not getting, and that’s a large part of why we haven’t built new refineries."

"I work in the industry. Every word of the above is total nonsense but I'm not in the mood to correct you or argue with a man who would rather die than fight. "

"Why we haven’t taken advantage of the technological improvement in nukes in the last 20 years, I have *no* clue. Probably fear. Modern pebble-bed reactors are not much dissimilar from the natural fission reactor that ran at Oklo for some 10-15,000 years, and we didn’t all end up with three eyes from that one."

Oh...shit.

And IRI, about those refineries… the companies haven’t just held off on building new ones for economic reasons, but also for practical ones. We are at or almost at maximum pumping capacity. Even the Saudis are pumping oil at or near their upper limit. Global supply has maxxed out. In the next 10-15 years, sustainable production levels may well begin to slip a little. You can’t refine oil you’re not getting, and that’s a large part of why we haven’t built new refineries.

Why we haven’t taken advantage of the technological improvement in nukes in the last 20 years, I have *no* clue. Probably fear. Modern pebble-bed reactors are not much dissimilar from the natural fission reactor that ran at Oklo for some 10-15,000 years, and we didn’t all end up with three eyes from that one.

I am POSITIVE there had to be more than a handful of Brits and commie/lib Americans during WWII who were pulling for the enemy. Some things never change!! (Remember: if you're reading this in English - thank a soldier!!)

"You all need to grow up and face the facts that we are in a war for the survival of our country as we know it." - Jim
WELL said, Jim!!!! So many on this site are idealistic "useful idiots" who wish to placate the enemy. They FAIL to realize that this is not an economic or territorial dispute that might be resolved utilizing diplomacy. The sick and disgusting aspect is the ideological frenzy that they whip themselves into. Their hatred of Geo. Bush is SO palpable, they root for the enemy.

I thought President Bush did a great job setting out what's going on in his speech. Do you understand that when these guys attack (al-qaeda) they won't care what party you belong to. This is truly a world war, and Iraq is now a part of it. We can agreee or disagree about whether it was in the beggining, but I think that any reasonable person would agree that it is now.

You all need to grow up and face the facts that we are in a war for the survival of our country as we know it. As a previous commenter said; <em>"The Muslim can not deny his faith. The Muslim faith calls for global conversion. They don’t all throw bombs but if you’ll notice very few have anything to say or do to make it stop. The reason for that is simple. They all believe it’s what God has called them to do."</em>

"I-R-I: 236
Talking point: insults detract from your arguments. Your first three sentences have no value to your argument and belittle your own person, thus affecting your own credibility."

Oh please. My credibility with y'all was shot the minute I self identified as a 2.5 ton 4X4, 12mpg driving WASP from Texas who voted for Bush. But you know my main complaint with the Left, besides being mostly pagan sexual libertines with an abortionist on call, traitorous vermin who hates our President but never met a sociopath murderous dictator they couldn't like is...you people have no sense of humor.

"You are right that most people have and will, time to time, exhibit racial preferences. Most people also will not utilize their ‘racial preferences’ to harm others. Certain people DO have racial fears. These are the ones who join and participate in the KKK (and if you happen to be ‘on the list’ THEY (good, God-fearing Americans) will F’ing kill you, too)."

Who are we talking about here? I'd say about .0003% of the population and that includes the radical Negro's, Mexicans and the Chinese Mafia who don't like anyone either and will kill you just as soon as look at you. On the other hand you have radical Islam.

I don't know what the percentage is of those willing to pick up arms and fight and kill for the moon god Allah but I do suspect that the percentage of Muslims that agree with their tactics and who will actively support them is very, very high. It's my opinion that the numbers who actively or passively support Islamist extremism is so high in the Muslim world that it is going to take a horrendous number of Muslim deaths to change the hearts and minds of the average Muslim from passive support to active resistance of the fundamentalist Islamist.

One chance to avoid that is the formation of liberal Islamic democracies in the Middle East. Thanks to Bush this is happening despite the hostility of the Islamist appeasers in Europe and the US. To oppose democratization and liberalism in the Middle East is to set the stage for the greatest killing field the world has ever seen. If the USA is hit with a nuclear or bio weapon that kills hundreds of thousands of us there will be tens of millions of Muslims dead in the following few days. Americans will demand it and it will happen.

"The Islamic terrorists don’t want to kill you because of race, though. They want to kill you because of a difference in ideology. I am sure they would gladly let anyone join their suicide bomber ranks regardless of race - its the ideology that drives them. You cannot suppress a strongly felt ideology with military force. It has never been done."

Suppress is the wrong word. Defeat is what we're looking for and it has been done in Europe. The Crusades were the result of fanatical Muslim expansionism and it took the combined forces of Christian Europe to turn them back to North Africa. But they have not given up.

"The terrorist leaders don’t care about enemy body counts any more than our military does. Their main weapon is not the bombs and dead bodies - it is the FEAR. By overreacting we play right into their hands."

You sound European. Any positive move to stem the tide or resist the onslaught is seen as over reacting. There is no alternative to what we are doing other than cowardice in the fact of the threat and appeasement. (See Spain and the majority of W. Europe for details on cowardice and appeasement) See President Thomas Jefferson and President George W. Bush for details on how to handle the Barbary Pirates)

"By manufacturing terror threat levels and hiding from shadows is a win for them. When our freedoms are surpressed in the name of “security” the terrorists win. The terrorists have been “winning” this conflict since it began: we (as a nation in general) are fearful, and our government increases that fear (for their own ends) at every opportunity: frredoms are lost or restricted: Big Brother steps in (Patriot Act, et. al.):"

Nonsense. I've yet to hear of any loss of Liberty. The only thing about the stricter security is the absolute idiocy driven by the ACLU and other Left Wing Terrorist Supporting Agencies like CAIR of not being allowed to profile suspects at air ports. I don't know about you but it pisses me off to see little old ladies strip searched in order to get on a plane. That is the Left's doing.

"military stretched so thin there aren’t enough Guardsmen in the country to aid their own homes when disaster strikes (and the goverment was not all that good at helping… "

Nonsense.

"and still isn’t: prices of necessities (like oil) have risen high enough that it is adversely affecting the life of the average American (and THAT is one thing the extremists REALLY hate: our free and, for most part(when the economy is good) luxurious lifestyle."

More nonsense. The government doesn't control the price of oil or gasoline. But here's a little tid bit for you hot off the presses. The Donks are holding up a bill that would help get some new gas refineries built. You know we haven't built one here for over thirty years because of the difficulty and expense thanks to environmental regulations and hostility including law suits from the Greens.

The fundamentalist Muslims hate us because A: we are infidel B: we are a polluted society of hedonistic libertines that practice obscenity in almost every area of our culture and that runs counter to everything they hold to be true and good. I'm afraid I have to agree with them. Everything the Left holds dear is to them evil. In this fundamentalist Christians and Muslims agree. Where we disagree is the method preferred to correct the problem. They want to cut off your heads. Speaking only for myself...I like the idea of hanging you from the nearest lamp post or feeding you to the sharks off the coast of Club Gitmo.

"We give in to the terrorists by being fearful (as a nation) and reactionary.
It sounds like you claim that all Muslims are radical Islamic terrorists. "

The Muslim can not deny his faith. The Muslim faith calls for global conversion. They don't all throw bombs but if you'll notice very few have anything to say or do to make it stop. The reason for that is simple. They all believe it's what God has called them to do.

#241 TCP: Pay attention? Why do you think we are all here on Think Progress? It's because we pay attention very well.

Hmmm.... lies about WMD, about firing people within the administration for leaking classified information, about the tax cuts, about social security being bankrupt by 2042, about why we went to Iraq, etc., etc.
These lies mean nothing to you? What about all the billions that Halliburton has received since the "war effort" began? What about the missing $9 billion missing? 9 BILLION DOLLARS MISSING?! How in the Hell can a supposedly responsible entity such as The United States Government misplace that incredible amount of money and not know where it is?! This is acceptable to you?!!

Now explain to all of us here how you can define that as any semblance of reason? We're paying attention.

Given that the family a)had very publically broken ties with Osama, and b)wasn't much likely to go anyplace lawyers couldn't follow (Saudi Arabia? Please. 'Let's run to where the US has a military presence that's pissing off our relative!'), shipping them off home to ensure their safety wasn't exactly a skullduggerous move.

Wanna question them? About what? Did Osama do it? We got that evidence quickly enough. Where is he? We knew, more or less. So what questions do you have for the family members?

Darn it Smedley, you guys picked the same day as us. We thought Nov.10th would be the day where we would show our support for the War effort. We plan on showing this support by making sure we all makes it to work that day, even if we are a little ill. No car pooling either, we'll all be driving individual vehicles wherever possible. Oh yeah, and we will just keep doing this every day too, until you guys start to pay attention and listen to reason.

It's really a shame that what started out as a serious subject on this site degenorated to nasty rhetoric and silly name calling. This country is in real trouble as a result of a stolen election in 2000 and an ignorant electorate in 2004. Forget about the nasty Republican troll. He's obviously enjoying himself at the moment. We know the truth. George's numbers are in the toilet. His own party is turning on him. Eventually even the troll boy will see the light.

War Protest - Nov 10 2005 Take a day off! – Please Read

If you feel, as the majority of Americans and people throughout the world do, that the war in Iraq is wrong, and you wish you had a way to show the Bush Administration, the Government of the United States, and the world, how you feel about it, then join us in our world wide walk out on November 10th 2005.

Show the world how you feel, and just how many of us feel this way. Let’s drive the point home by taking away from them their most precious item; money.

On November 10th 2005, unless you hold a position which people rely upon in the event of an emergency (you work at a hospital, a firemen, policemen etc), don’t go to work. Try not to drive your car; don’t watch T.V.; don’t use the internet. Stay at home. Read a book. Play with your kids. Engage in a hobby.

Plan a vacation day at work. Call in sick. Use your best judgment on how to take this day off.

If we don’t get their attention this way, we’ll just do it again, until we do.

If the people speak, and speak together, they have to listen.

Please email this to as many of your friends and colleagues as you wish/can.
