Steady Leadership

George W. Bush, 10/6/05:

Against such an enemy there is only one effective response: We will never back down, never give in and never accept anything less than complete victory.

CBS News, 8/30/04:

In an interview on NBC-TV’s “Today” show, Mr. Bush …suggested an all-out victory against terrorism might not be possible. Asked “Can we win?” Mr. Mr. Bush said, “I don’t think you can win it.”

When I first read this: “I don’t think you can win it. But I think you can create conditions so that the — those who use terror as a tool are less acceptable in parts of the world.”

I thought it said “those OF US who use terror…” and my eyes almost bugged out of my head.

  3. Jesus Christ God of WAR says:

    Flip. Flop.

This is the steady hand of leadership? It sounds like the hand is gripping something a bit more personal. This is no way to “lead” a country!

  4. Jeff says:

That’s leadership with a capital “L”, and remind me again who was portrayed as the flip-flopper during the ‘04 election.

  5. progressive and proud says:

All that crap they accused the dems of are coming back ten fold. It couldn’t happen to more deserving folk.

  6. thot's says:

bush needs to get a new spin ……. when is the msm going to wake up……just warmed over dribble….

Did anyone see rover lurking around?

  7. Patriot says:

There isn’t a day that goes by I don’t think about that “can’t win” comment.

  8. AndrewW says:

hey have you seen this: http://blogcritics.org/archives/2005/10/05/115940.php

Jeff Gannon in a dress! Hilarious!

  9. MEM says:

Personally I think this is one of those times that the President got caught telling the truth, instead of the stump-speech hot air eruption expected of him at the time. How can you defeat an abstract noun? The point is to mitigate threats. The intelluctually perverse concept is actually “War on *”, not “I don’t think you can win it.”

  10. I-RIGHT-I says:

    That’s because you’re a loser.

  11. Mary Poppin says:

This is embarrassing that this man is our leader.

  12. MagnumDB says:

Bush today, basically repeated what he said on CBS. In his war on terror speech he said “…no conscience, bribe or act of appeasement will change or limit their plans for murder.”

One has to wonder why Bush believes we’ll accept this. If this was actually the case, he would have said this to us in the first place, and that would have remained the same until now.

When you change your story this many times, it’s hard for people to say, “Alright, THIS is the true story.”

Even if this IS true, that still doesn’t justify us being there, because they were not a threat to the US. The only lie that made sense for our invasion was the WMD story, because only WMD would be a threat to us. Not a single excuse afterwards means we should send our soldiers over there.

And I am getting really sick of this religious kind of way of presenting Iraq. I mentioned in another reply that they ask us to have faith. To just TRUST him that things are going well despite what we see on TV. We have to believe what we can not see, what’s going on ‘behind the scenes’.

If only Bush could understand that with the way this Administration has been unravelling, it’s impossible to believe them anymore. He said he was a conservative, but he’s spent more than most US presidents, he’s expanded government by, I’ve been told 33% (if someone could supply me with a source on that, I’d appreciate it), we have DeLay and Frist, and Libby and Rove, and Cheney, and many others in the administration under all kinds of investigations…. and Bush wants us to TRUST HIM?

    It’s not going to happen.

  13. Patriot says:

    MEM,

I had similar thoughts. Today he verified in more concrete terms why his gov’t is unpopular.

    Give it up IRI.

  14. Jeff says:

Good to see W apologist IRI in “the House.” Start the spin.

  15. Zappatero says:

he actually let the truth slip out in ‘04.

But that was inconvenient because they were bashing Kerry over the head with being a pussy.

    Mary Poppin,
I couldn’t agree with you more. It’s not only embarrassing, I’m ashamed, and I didn’t even vote for the pig.

  17. Mary Poppin says:

Maybe if Kerry was our President we wouldn’t be in Iraq. It is to bad we have such brainwash people that believe every thing Old Bushie says.

  18. Zookeeper says:

I was getting ready for work during this “major” speech, so I couldn’t pay much attention because of drying my hair and and all the puking.

He said something to the effect of, We were not in Iraq on 9/11, but the terrorists attacked anyway. Huh?

He was also said something about a rich boy who gets others to do his dirty work. I thought, Wow!, that’s really insightful! Then I realized he was talking about OBL.

    Is there a transcript…?

  19. wisedup says:

“Are they IMPEACHING ME!!!”……the words are comming.

  20. Southwest Bob says:

Following is Bushco’s latest installment in his FEAR FACTOR show. It seems to me that his is accusing Islamic militants of the same thing the neo-cons want to achieve. If you replace Islamic militants with GW Bush, it actually makes more sense.

What he leaves out is that Iraq WAS NOT a hot bed for insurgency until he decided to invade. It must be nice to have short term memory loss.
    _______________________

    WASHINGTON -
President Bush accused Islamic militants (GW BUSH) on Thursday of seeking to “enslave whole nations and intimidate the world” and charged they have made
    Iraq their main front.

“The militants (GW BUSH & Friends) believe that controlling one country will rally the Muslim masses, enabling them to overthrow all moderate governments in the region and establish a radical Islamic empire that spans from Spain to Indonesia,” Bush said.
    __________________________

This is simply more of the same routine…. FEAR the Muslim Militants they want your SUV! Either we kill them or they kill us! It will be interesting to see if repubs are growing tired of the routine.

  21. Mary Poppin says:

Yes, I said impeach him the day he won the illegal election in November of 2000 and 2004.

  22. Zookeeper says:

Holy crap, Keith H. Thanks for the link.

  23. the Dane says:

Now we must be fair. This man is not able to remember how he began a sentence by the time he finishes it. How is Dear Leader supposed to remember something said a WHOLE year earlier. The alcohol would never let him do it.

  24. Anne says:

    # 21 I agree with you. He laid out almost exactly what the neo-cons are working so hard to do to the U.S. Just how dumb are his believers?

  25. Zookeeper says:

Anne, it’s not how dumb his followers are, although they are as dumb as a bag of hammers, it’s how dumb Georgie thinks WE are. He’s a bubble boy.

  26. mighty aphrodite says:

You pitiful losers who fail to see the threat of maniacal Islamofascism – the only people you “make peace with are people who want peace”. If many of you had your way we’d still be analyzing the “brilliance” of the Gorbachev and linking arms with Fidel – ala “Rev” Jesse Jackson.

  27. Marie says:

    Thank you TP!
Your archival searches are very productive. Apparently Bushies speechwriters aren’t so efficient.
Do I hear something? Yes! George Bush is FLIP-FLOPPING AGAIN!

  28. Ben says:

#27 – Well apparently there must be some justification in Georgie’s perception of the lack of intelligence. The inability to make the case that the Democratic nominee is the correct choice is a good example of failing to put forth a credible argument.

  29. Massachusetts Liberal says:

    Zookeeper—- You’re surprised??

  30. Zookeeper says:

  31. mighty aphrodite says:

“We will never back down, never give in…” – it reminded me of a speech by Winston Churchill. Of course, the losers who have been rooting for the US to lose are reminiscent of the left of old.

  32. Ryan Neat says:

    Mighty Windbag,

Nice ‘framing’ of a lie. Republicans fund and train terrorists, who attack america, and we use it as an excuse to illegally invade Iraq based on it possessing WMDs that we sell, and you try to say GeezAssW was like Churchill? More like Hitler!

The fact is Reichwingers like you clearly want america to lose everything including our civil liberties, otherwise you’d stop defending the indefensible. You’d stop defending one republican administration after another that ARMS AND CREATES ENEMIES!

The fact you’re such a stupid dope explains why they can get 30% to continually vote for their ridiculous, failed and treasonous policies! You’re a shameful excuse of an american, and a MURDERER who sends innocent people to kill and torture innocent civilians because of your party’s irrational fears and greed! You’re a stupid psychotic moron!

  33. Ben says:

Hey Ryan, the people that were removed from power in Iraq were responsible for killing 75 to 125 people a day for 22 years. That’s according to Human Rights Watch. Similar numbers are provided by Amnesty International. That’s right around a million people. So my question is are American lives more valuable than Iraqi lives? 9/11 was not just about America. It’s a global thing. You speak of civil liberties? Islamic extremists are fighting for existence as their way of life is seriously threatened by demographic changes in the Middle East. The younger segment of their population seeks a more Westernized way of government. The stranglehold on women in the region is slipping. They are willing to do whatever it takes to maintain it. So effectively what you are saying is that these innocent people should continue to live under their circumstances as the world stands quietly. History will look back and realize that America lived up to her reputation as an intervening power that stopped atrocities when it was in her capacity to do so.

  34. mighty aphrodite says:

Ben – I know it’s hard to understand – but so many of the “One World”, Kumbayaaa libs are masochistic and hate their own country. Many view America as the root of ALL evil. They cheer when we lose. Our winning (wars, elections etc.) must make them feel horribly deficient, or intellectually impotent.

  35. AndieLee says:

I have an argument with both the far right and the far left. I am irritated by the fact that we have troops in Iraq but allow the Saudis to get away with supporting some of the terrorists and suppressing freedoms in their country. They are given a lot of leeway because of oil. Those that want to “turn the other cheek” and live in peace with terrorists, that attack unprovoked, are simply idiots.

As I understand it, the Islamic extremists that encourage homicide bombers targeting women, children, all innocents, are going against the basic tenets of the Islamic faith. “Peace be with you,” is the universal greeting in Islam and each mention of Mohammad is followed by “Peace and blessings be upon his name.”
They are not peacful, not true to Islam and are corrupting the message penned by the Prophet. Basically they are cowards. If they were true warriors, they would put themselves in combat against other warriors, not on unarmed people.

They seem to think that they have a monopoly on terrorism but I keep thinking that someday they are going to target the wrong person and pay the ultimate price.
Many years ago I read a very scary Sci-Fi book, I think it was by Frank Herbert, about a plague that was created by a man whose family was killed by an IRA bomb.
Genengineers now could do something similar, targeting a particular DNA factor unique to those descended from a particular line. Call it Ismael’s plague.

Or some nut case could bomb Mecca and destroy the center of the Islamic faith.
Christians, except for the Vatican, do not have centrist religions dependent upon one spot on the earth to anchor their faith.
Where would Muslims face if the Ka’Ba and the great mosque were no more? There is the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem but it is not the “first place created on earth,” as they think of Mecca.
The city in which I live has a few religious fanatics that might think something like this would be just dandy, not to mention that they are all gun enthusiasts with NRA stickers on their pick-up trucks.

  36. Mr. Evil says:

The corporate media machine at work again. Read this; http://mediamatters.org/items/200510070001. It’s short and to the point.

  37. mighty aphrodite says:

As much as you wimps and whiners hate Bush and conservatives, I am GRATEFUL Al Gore and/or John Kerry are not running the show!!! Bubba threw them a well timed rocket attack – once. Al might piss them off more blaming their camels and oil for world-wide pollution and Kerry might windsurf (or sand board) right over and show them who’s in charge – his bride.

  38. mysticagent says:

#35 – This data is from the same Amnesty International that has been accusing the US of torture, and which the Administration (happy to use their reports on Iraq and quote them as 100% reliable) claims are completely unfounded in their allegations of torture in US facilities. “Well, WE just don’t do things like that.” You can’t have it both ways. If you accpet the Amnesty report on Iraq, you must also accept the Amnesty report on the US (note that other humanitarian groups have also leveled similar accusations, to include the Red Cross). Or is this just following the Admin lead, and using whatever info happens to be convenient to support preconceived notions and secret agendas?
Second, the ‘people in power’ who were responsible for the killing are still in power. Hussein is out, but many of his regime are still there and in power, and many of the military are those who were in Hussein’s military.
Civil liberties? I think the civil liberties people refer to are OURS, which are dissappearing under this administration which is consumed by ‘terror’ (both abroad and at home). Is Iraq the only foreign country with civil liberties issues? I think not, and I think there are worse examples out there right now. How about being FIRST a positive EXAMPLE of democracy working and the advantages of freedom. Let’s fix things at home before we go trying to tell others how they should act (look up “self righteous”).
“America lived up to her reputation as an intervening power that stopped atrocities when it was in her capacity to do so.” Like…. WWII? Boy, we jumped right into that one, eh? How many years did it take for us to get involved with “Time’s Man of the Year, Hitler”? Communist Russia? Cold War (yep, leaping right in to protect human and civil rights). Etc., etc..
“It’s a global thing.” That’s why we have a strong global support for our activities in the Mid East, I guess. That is why we HAD to go into Iraq: one of the “Axis of Evil”. We COULD have gone after Iran (oh, wait, they REALLY do have WMD), or Korea (…what?… THEY have WMD, too?) … oh, hell, let’s get Iraq …. they’re the ones with OIL (and no WMD – see Wilson).
What history will note is that America invaded a sovereign nation without a declaration of war, hunted down their leader, and required a specific form of government be in place. History will also note that this invasion increased the turbulence and violence in the region manyfold. How many people (military and civilian) are dying each day during the occupation? (Actually, that is a hard number to accurately tally, since the administration is “not concerned with civilian bodycounts” – that’s because a “smart bomb” is “not” – and there’s compassion for you).
