FEMA Deadline Looming For Katrina Victims

[Ed. note: Stephen Geer works for American Progress and just returned from New Orleans.]

The few people who have returned to New Orleans are just beginning to get their lives reordered. Not a single person I spoke to during my visit had even started paperwork with their insurance companies, let alone registered with FEMA. Until they got back into the city, they didn’t know what to report, and those who had called FEMA couldn’t get through.

Worse, FEMA has a 60-day deadline for individuals to register for relief aid, like loan assistance.

To help push FEMA on this issue, we’ve set up a very simple website — www.extendthedeadline.org — that lets you send a message to FEMA asking them to extend the deadline past the current date, October 28.

This is a battle we can win, and it’s a victory that Katrina victims desperately need. Please take a minute and ask FEMA to ExtendTheDeadline.

How do these policies compare to FEMA’s performance in Florida, where it paid $31 million in benefits in counties unaffected by the 2004 hurricanes?

    For more background, see:

    “FEMA: Florida Election Management Agency.”

  2. backtobasics says:

If people miss the dealine they don’t deserve the help. The sooner those people learn to take care of themselves the better it is for everyone.

  3. Andrew G. says:

The deadline can be extended. This is fairly common. FEMA waits until the last minute to do so to encourage everyone to register as soon as possible, then ends up extending the deadline.

With a disaster of this magnitude, it is likley that it will be, and it can be, extended multiple times.

  4. Anti Warhol says:

#2 – I agree with you that people need to get on the ball in the sense that you can’t leave the deadline open-ended for all practical purposes.

However, 60 days is the common deadline given to new residents of a state to re-title their car. The thinking there is that people’s lives are busy and disrupted by the move, they need a grace period.

Now imagine if you’ve lost everything- your job, your house, your car, your phone, possibly lives of family members. 60 days doesn’t seem like all that much time.

  5. Marie says:

    #2 Rather heartless comment.
Many people were not even allowed back into the city to survey what damages they sustained. It’s fine to impose a deadline by which all claims are to have been filed, but in this case 60 days is unreasonable, and an extension is in order.

  6. I-RIGHT-I says:

It looks to me that “Think Communistic” once again has it ass backwards. The State of Louisiana must request the extension. Why is it then “Think Pink” is organizing a little raid on FEMA when it’s the DONKS in Louisiana (who dropped the ball the first time regarding FEMA)who are responsible to (gasp, shudder, gulp) help their own people.

It’s no wonder you people can’t get anyone elected or actually help anyone. You can’t f’ing read and follow simple directions. Sheesh!

“Extension of the registration period. The regional director or
his/her designee may extend the registration period when the State
requests more time to collect registrations from the affected
    population.
The Regional Director or his/her designee may also extend
the standard registration period when necessary to establish the same
registration deadline for contiguous counties or States.”

  7. Anti Warhol says:

#6 – The FEMA director can also extend the deadline.

why are you so angry that Think Progress is asking FEMA to extend the deadline? what does extensions of deadlines have to do with communism?

  8. Ryan Neat says:

MrWrong the freakazoid of the freakrepublics,

“It looks to me that “Think Communistic” once again has it ass backwards. The State of Louisiana must request the extension. ”

That’s a flat lie, your own paragraph below clearly states that the regional director has discretion to extend the deadline.

“Why is it then “Think Pink” is organizing a little raid on FEMA when it’s the DONKS in Louisiana (who dropped the ball the first time regarding FEMA)who are responsible to (gasp, shudder, gulp) help their own people.”

This has been disproven and discredited. Just because you repeat a lie doesn’t make it true. Just because you have no short term memory to recall the fact that you’ve been discredited and disproven doesn’t change the fact.

    You’re a stupid fool!

You forgot to highlight the second part of the post – once again showing what a stupid dope you are:

The Regional Director or his/her designee may also extend the standard registration period when necessary to establish the same registration deadline for contiguous counties or States.

  9. Ryan Neat says:

MrWrong is a classic fascist, anyone who wants accountability in republicans is called a commie. It’s just a distraction from the fact that they’re fascist inept morons… It’s not based in ANY facts or even logic – it’s just a knee jerk reaction from a retarded fool…

That’s what they do, Ryan Neat, they hear something they like (no matter if it’s a lie) and repeat it like an Elmo doll. All they have to do is glom onto one ridiculous falsity and away they go. As long as Ann Coulter or Oxycontinhead says it, they run with it. As long as a drug addict or criminal said it, it is gospel. Sad naive trolls.

They hate Clinton so much they get all red-faced and start smoking from the ears when you mention his name. Trolls, THAT is power.

Comment by Ryan “I don’t read good” Neat

Hi Ryan, I thought you were dead. The State of Louisiana has to get the ball rolling. Period. Gary Jones is your acting FEMA director for that region. You can send him all the hate mail you want but until the DONK LOSERS who run that shit-hole we call Louisiana asks him for the extension you might as well piss up a rope. Have a nice day.

That’s right sweetheart. We rule the world but you minimum wage losers have all the right answers. How the hell do you people survive anyway? Can’t read, can’t write, don’t get it after it’s been explained to you with simple one and two syllable words….sheesh.

Comment by Ryan “I just don’t listen” Neat

One more time dummy, here’s the key phrase…”when necessary to establish the same registration deadline for contiguous counties or States.”

The State MUST get the ball rolling. End of story. Period.

I suggest “Think Pink” send all their hate mail to that idiot woman governor of Loseranna but I KNOW that the point of this exercise IS NOT TO HELP PEOPLE. It’s to hurt the Bush administration. You people are well known for not caring who you kill if you can get a cheap shot at Bush. You’re a bunch of pathetic treasonous vermin and I hope one day to see the lot of you do the air dance and the dirt nap.

  16. Ryan Neat says:

MrWrong is just a stupid LIAR, and while in his inner soul he knows this, his childish fears and limitations prevent him from embracing it! So here’s the PROOF HE’S WRONG REPOSTED AGAIN. How does he reply to his PROOF HE’S WRONG? By changing the subject as all republican failed propagandists must…

They have no job, no school, and really nothing else to do. I see no reason they can’t make the deadline. Oh yeah, make them all get jobs, pay rent and get them out of the hotels too.
