The “Broader Conspiracy”: What We Already Know About the White House Iraq Group

The WSJ reports that Patrick Fitzgerald’s investigation has zeroed in on the White House Iraq Group (WHIG):

Mr. Fitzgerald’s pursuit now suggests he might be investigating not a narrow case on the leaking of the agent’s name, but perhaps a broader conspiracy…Lawyers familiar with the investigation believe that at least part of the outcome likely hangs on the inner workings of what has been dubbed the White House Iraq Group. Formed in August 2002, the group, which included Messrs. Rove and Libby, worked on setting strategy for selling the war in Iraq to the public in the months leading up to the March 2003 invasion. The group likely would have played a significant role in responding to Mr. Wilson’s claims.

It sounds plausible, especially considering how much we already know about the involvements of members of WHIG:

Chief of Staff to Vice President Cheney Scooter Libby: Visited the CIA to press them for information about uranium sales to Iraq. Helped prepare CIA director George Tenet’s response to criticism about faulty intelligence included in the President’s State of the Union address. Spoke with Time reporter Matt Cooper and New York Times reporter Judith Miller about Valerie Wilson’s role at the CIA. Testified before the grand jury. [Link]

National Security Advisor Stephen Hadley: Received an email from Rove about his conversation with Matt Cooper. Was warned by the CIA not the cite uranium evidence. Helped prepare CIA director George Tenet’s response to criticism about faulty intelligence included in the President’s State of the Union address. Believed to have been questioned by special prosecutor. [Link]

Chief of Staff Andrew Card: Received 12-hour head start on Justice Department investigation. Was on Air Force one with State Department memo describing Valerie Wilson’s role at CIA. Initiated conversation between Tenet and Bush about investigation. Believed to have been questioned by special prosecutor. [Link]

Deputy Chief of Staff Karl Rove: Spoke with Time reporter Matt Cooper and columnist Robert Novak about Valerie Wilson’s role at the CIA. Helped prepare CIA director George Tenet’s response to criticism about faulty intelligence included in the President’s State of the Union address. Testified before the grand jury. [Link]

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice: In July 2003 received a briefing book that may have contained a State Department memo discussing Valerie Wilson’s role at the CIA. Appeared on Sunday shows to “protect Cheney by explaining that he had had nothing to do with sending Wilson to Niger, and dismiss the yellowcake issue.” Questioned by special prosecutor. [Link]

Senior Advisor Mary Matalin: Worked closely with Vice-President Cheney. Testified before grand jury. [Link]

Communications Director Dan Bartlett: Was on Air Force one with State Department memo describing Valerie Wilson’s role at CIA. Longstanding ties to Rove. Offered contradictory explanation of infamous “16 words.” [Link]

White House Aide Karen Hughes: Denied Rove’s involvement in leak. Helped draft State of the Union Addess with false uranium claim. Interviewed with Fitzgerald. [Link]

Much more in our leak scandal cast of characters.

Looks like more people might be in trouble than any of us previously thought.

  2. Mary Poppin says:

Hats off to Fitzgerld!!!! I hope he can indicted all of them. We need to get rit of all the cronies. They will try to spin this.

  3. Jay says:

If this is true and Fitzgerald has the nerve to drill down into this to seek truth and justice for all the crimes that he finds connected to the roots of the WHIG, and he fearlessly follows through and prosecutes, he is instantly catapulted into the ranks of Great American Heroes. No question. This dude must have bodyguards at this point.

  4. Timothy says:

The Bush Crime Family will stage another “terrorist” attack before they let themselves get caught.

I don’t know about you guys but I’m keeping my hopes from soaring too high…

  7. ALYCE says:

We are deep into a Culture of Corruption, Lies and Cronyism, they all should be tried by ICC. We have these people running/ruining this country. Sickening.

  8. Jay says:

Darth, I hear you buddy. How politically geeky are we that we’re this fired up about pending indictments of the Presidents chief political advisor and the Veep’s right-hand man. It may amount to nothing, but the anticipation has put butterflies in my stomach. Fitz, just DO IT already!

  9. Southwest Bob says:

“The Iraq has WMD’s” ploy has been transparent from the the beginning. The prez’s lack of character has always been highly visible and thus, it was only a matter of time until his house of lying cards fell down. With Nixon, we have an example of what happens when ego overcomes character and honesty. It’s obvious that greed has overwhelmed this administration. Not just greed for money, but greed for unlimited and unquestioned power and authority. We’re lucky to have Fitzgerald who is flushing out the dishonesty even in the highest office of the country.

  10. mighty aphrodite says:

Portly – FYI, Arianna was NEVER one of us – she mouthed conservative platitudes to try to get her closeted gay husband elected – what a waste of $$$.

  11. Mary Poppin says:

#4 Lets hope this does not happen. What a thought another TERRORIST ATTACK. That is very scary.

  12. Anti Warhol says:

    #3 – FYI
Fitz is already in near-witness protection status after having brought down some mob figures and the Gov. of Illinois. He’s got the balls, lets hope he has the evidence.

  13. chabuka says:

Hopefully, Treason will never be a “pardonable offense” I am sick of these crooks being thrown out in disgrace, pardoned and cycled back in, only to become involved in another more grevious, more outrageous scheme

  14. Romdinstler Jones says:

Nice list of characters but you left out Ehrlichman, Haldeman, Mitche…oh, wait a sec…wrong scandal!

  15. War Is Not Pro-Life says:

I share your reluctance to get too excited about the return of justice and truth to this country.

I remember the Iran-Contra Affair. Neither Reagan or Bush Sr. got any real dirt on themselves and Bush pardoned the ones that did.

What’s your point, Randy? Can you name 200 things Georgie has done to benefit this country — the WHOLE country?

  19. Jay says:

Clinton IS NOT THE PRESIDENT you nimrod! This country was paradise under Clinton, today’s disaster is was built and is wholly owned by the GOP….so suck it!

  20. Speedy says:

Where does our favorite SCOTUS nominee, Harriet Meirs fit in? Shouldn’t she be somewhere on the list of players of WHIG?

See was after all very involved with all aspects of the GWOT.

  21. Bert Deet says:

Notice how the formation of the White House Iraq Group in August 2002 coincides nicely with Dick Cheney confidently declaring in late August 2002:

“Simply stated, there is no doubt that Saddam Hussein now has weapons of mass destruction.”

  22. Sharon Cox says:

Yah! Randy, I asked for that, what good has Bush done for you and the american public, that didn’t take lives, last week. We would like your answer’s on that. How about it.?….Blessings

  23. Badger says:

Randy, I have to question your sanity, “Not drinking beer” is a viable reason to remove someone from office? What kind of moron are you? Oh yeah, you are a repukelican, that explains it all. I can only pray that one day you WAKE UP to reality!

  24. shanon says:

I’m constantly amazed by the rabid obsession the koolaid drinkin’ ditto heads have with the Clintons…of which Randy’s a prime example. Nonetheless, it’s sad (and telling) that in the midst of all this Plamegate stench, the Randy’s of the world have nothing better to add to the conversation than another pitiful, purely subjective Clinton list.

  25. thot's says:

The WHIG’s maybe just maybe in trouble.Yesterday bush was shaking like a leaf either he was very scared or very angry but any Ms Valium came to his aid….

I want MY Country Back Damnit! Now! Hey Randy, guess what I would rather have a President in Office banging a chick than a Treasonous ba****rd like bush any day….You may want to ask the W.H. about a male working boy name Jeff Gannnon (not his real name).Who’s backside was he keeping warm…

  26. Sharon Cox says:

I agree Shanon, guess he went off to work (Randy). Be sure you check in with your right wing nut job’s to get us a list Randy. We are waiting with baited breath and delighted to be enlightened by you and your views….Blessings

  27. Sharon Cox says:

Hay! Thot’s, what’s that about.? Sounds interesting. Can you post please……Blessings

  28. Ryan Neat says:

Wow, Randy and the other freepers have so many petty and irrelevant reasons for hating Clinton – when by contrast we have so many REAL reasons to want bush gone. You know dimwitted freeper that quantity doesn’t trump quality don’t you? I think treason, torture, economic collapse, cronyism, corruption, failure of agencies that MURDER by their ineptitude alone trump any and ALL things you’ve written – and I’m just getting started. See the difference is that I could fill several pages with REAL crimes – what you wrote reads more like a kindergarten list of toddler fits…

  29. Rich says:

Randy, don’t forget there was and still is a huge Republican elephant constantly on Clinton’s back. That is partly the reason the country is the shape it is in. You got your “Contract on America” and we all are paying for it now. Yet, we are expected to roll over for your president and we did for a time, because 9/11 scared us. President Bush had an huge opportunity to do great things when we and the world was united after that horrible day. Look what he chose to do.

  30. mysticagent says:

What’s interesting is that they are all bringing up Clinton, particularly in reference to having wanted to see him thrown out of office. I have not heard any official news that impeachment of Bush is probable (I’m not saying it isn’t – though I’d prefer treason charges). They know how high up the stench goes, and they are fearful that their tin god is about to be tossed in the furnace: apply Rove tactic A; sling mud… sling lots of mud, even if its bad mud (….. ummm, the metaphor is falling apart here. Mud is mud).

  31. Mary Poppin says:

It seems funny when the Repubs are in trouble they always bring Clinton up. Clinton has not been in office for 5 years. The Repubs tried to get him for eight years. This was totally disgusting. Now it will be their turn to go down.

  32. Sara says:

#25, #27, Sharon, how did you miss this? Jeff Gannon received WH Press pass for over a year, in order to softball the questions that the administration wanted asked. Too bad they didn’t run a background check, turns out JG is a “male escort” (whore), military drag preferred, with nasty photos on websites and all! America Blog has a nice page about it, and you can Google “Jeff Gannon” for more. We all know he’s doing someone there, my personal bet is Karl… It is so amusing!

  33. chris says:

I hear Randy’s pretty cool. He can cut AND paste.

  34. Rich says:

Typo…we and the world were united…

We can have a good laugh at President Clinton and his indescretions, too. Don’t you miss all that news about blue dresses and cigars. At least nobody was killed or maimed. It turns out that all the money wasted on Whitewater is nothing compared to the debt being racked up now. Republicans got their impeachment trial and distracted the country from it’s real concerns. Let’s put President Bush and Vice President Cheney under oath and see if they lie.

  35. Benton says:

I can name over 100,000 examples of why Randy’s are trivial.

They just happen to be every Iraqi that has been killed in the name of their freedom.

So let me get this straight getting your schlong sucked is worse than killing over a 100,000 civiians plus almost 2000 soldiers for a fabricated lie.

PLZZZZZ – Randy get you head out your a**

  36. Sharon Cox says:

Ahhhhh, Thank’s Sara, now I remember. Sorry about the short term memory loss. I need a score card. LOL….Blessings..P,S. Where’s Randy with our list…..LOL again

  37. Jack Schlink says:

Forensic blogging by Judd Dread, well laid out, with fetching pics of the dramatis personae. Fitzgerald’s relentless pursuit of the truth is top shelf political drama. Junior has always displayed a cruel delight in verbally branding his factota. How prescient he was in selecting Karl’s sobriquet because presently, the stench around neocon central is overpowering. As the curtain is about to go up on ActII–The Indictments, one awaits the destiny of whomsoever of the WHIGs is a mendacious warmonger. Please stand-by for lots of Friendly Fire and Collateral Damage. Only his time, they won’t be able to hide the Body Count.

  38. John says:

Can’t we sent emails to Fitzgerald to show how many Americans want to see him going forward with his investigation and does not get intimitated by the right wing press attacks?

  39. Rich says:

To get back to the topic, is anything Clinton may have done worse that outing a CIA official? It is my hope that Mr. Fitzgerald deals with this honestly and honorably. The country doesn’t need more of this political battling, but the arrogance and true intentions of this administation has got to be exposed to and understood by everyone. Even Randy. The spin has to be removed and the facts laid out for all of us. That is Mr. Fitzgerald’s duty and he should do it without fear.

  40. Randy says:

Since when has the left been so concerned about anything the CIA has done? Only when it fits their interests. When was the last time Plame was actually working as an operative? It doesn’t matter because the charges are more important than any crime that may or may not have been committed.

  41. Marie says:

Let’s see, it’s about thirteen years now that the Rethuglicans have been blaming Clinton for everything bad that has happened. Yes, he did lie about Monica –we all agree with that — but Randy’s silly list, and too-numerous-to-count (false)claims by the other trolls around here are just getting redundantly stupid.
Just remember that we had 8 relatively peaceful and prosperous years sandwiched between two fiscally irresponsible administrations, and add to that the current administration is going down as the worst in American history.
There is nothing, I repeat, nothing, you can honestly claim that has improved since GW has been in office. Everything has gotten worse. Don’t say 9/11 changed everything — because he ignored its warnings, and he squandered the worldwide good will that followed and he made us hated, feared, and distrusted around the world with his ego-driven, self-centered illegal war. If I begin a list of his domestic policies that have been disastrous, my list would rival Randy’s.
So, freepers, KNOCK IT OFF! We know you can’t defend
GW so you are lashing out, but it’s tiresome now and too predictable.

  42. Ryan Neat says:

“Since when has the left been so concerned about anything the CIA has done?”

Since they started overthrowing democracy in central america and selling drugs in LA to fund illegal wars in central america, and training, founding and funding AlQueda! That’s when I became interested in it.

” Only when it fits their interests. ”

That would best fit republicans. Unless it fits your personal ‘interests’, you have no compassion, empathy or concern for others. This is fashioned projection from the queens of projection – the reichwing chickenhawk closet cases like you!

“When was the last time Plame was actually working as an operative? ”

First of all you DOPE, every person and every network she was involved in was compromised – not just her ACTIVE duty. Just because you’re too stupid to inform yourself of your party’s treason, and your defense of it – don’t claim ignorance – it’s an overused reichwing defense!

“It doesn’t matter because the charges are more important than any crime that may or may not have been committed.”

Blah Blah Blah – and yet we see claims of ‘committed’ crimes your side makes daily that are nonsense against progressives. You guys are such loser hypocrits – you must be truly insane to be able to sleep at night.

    “Comment by Randy ”

    RudeDumby is more like it.

  43. progressive and proud says:

So, Randy, what do you think about your criminals now? Do you think they are all being smeared? Is this a vast conspiracy?

  44. Ranting Tommy says:

I think Randy not only drinks the KoolAid, but he doesnt even mix it up first, he just dumps the powder right on his tongue for maximum saturation.

  45. mysticagent says:

#42 – I just want to re-emphasize one of your points because I think from the start the spinmeisters have distorted this important point of the issue: It is not just Plame who got outed. Anyone she had contact with, and their entire front operation were compromised. And you can be sure that every online terrorist in the world was checking up on anyone and anything that she might have been involved with to try to identify the spooks as soon as the story broke. Plus, she was still on the roster – she still had connections and was still a viable agent to go back into the field, regardless of her current or recent status. Now all of the taxpayers money that went to train her and to field her and the front and unnameable contacts and other operatives has gone to waste. This is treason.

  46. Ryan Neat says:

These guys are all doped up on free republic mental suppressants. Their brain doesn’t function at the level necessary to engage ration and reason – they’re stuck exclusively in the flight or fight mentality of fear…

Looks like the old Tom Flocco Bush/Cheney Indicted news story from a few months ago may actually turn out to be true.

    Anyone remember that one?

  50. US PERSON says:

    IS IT SAFE?

50% of Americans support impeachment of “Baby Doc” Bush for lying to Congress. He violated his oath of office by furthering the WHIG scheme to obtain Congressional consent for war based on false pretenses. For all we know now, he might have had personal knowledge of the fraudulent Niger yellowcake claims. Wilson told the State Department, and presumably “Kinda Sleezy” Rice knew about the forgery.

  51. Marie says:

    Big D,
I looked it up to refresh my memory — he may have been way ahead of everyone else. . . I hope he’s right.

Don’t kid yourself. Mary Matalin AND her husband are in the sh’t up to their hip boots – the Clinton’s are in it too now that they’ve been inducted into Skull & Bones with daddy Bush.

FOrget the Clintons – they are hasbeens who have sold out for the 100th time for power and money -

  53. Marie says:

Tonight on MSNBC, Olberman interviewed Vanderhei from the WashPost. Speculation is that Fitzgerald is going after charges involving the Espionage Act which is apparently broader based than the hard-to-prove outing of a CIA operative. Lawyers for those interviewed by Fitz are leaking that this is where they think this is headed and that there WILL be indictments on espionage charges.

  54. cmw says:

It’s possible that before Bush will be taken to court for impeachment proceedings, he will call for martial law and start quaranting the country for protection from bird flu. What will you do?

  55. peggy says:

Mary Matalin, Karen Hughes, Dan Bartlett, and others were in this group as well. Can anyone get their hands on the other names?

Not that I doubt the Clintons are corporate shills, but isn’t Skull and Bones a college group? Isn’t it only for men? Do you mean the Carlyle Group?

  58. Old Norm says:

Does anyone know of a site where before and after Bush statistics are listed. Things like GDP, GNP, deficit, poverty stats, etc.?

  59. Bobb says:

Has anyone lese wondered if Judith Miller’s book on anthrax was also a propaganda piece for the White House? Sept 4th, 2001, the NY Times features a story about anthrax penned by her… on the night of September 11th, 2001, the White House starts taking Cipro, and 20 some days later US military grade anthrax starts appearing at media outlets. Is this a coincidence, or another plot yet to be discovered?

  60. Anonymous says:

Has anyone thought that perhaps the long term goals of Skull & Bones and other Anglo-American secret societies has always been the destruction of the “full faith and credit” of the Unites States of America and it’s federal constitution.

Remember that Bush 43’s S&B nickname is “temporary”…

Whatever the outcome, the coming collapse of the global corporate economic system represents a fait accompli – making way for world government by way of economic, social and political chaos.

Either that, or a veritable popular political revolution occurs in America, restoring constitutional government and national banking under a new monetary system of co-operation among sovereign nation states committed to peaceful development.

Crisis brings opportunity, always. Now is the time to fight to the death to end the power of the aristocracy. The alternative is slavery.

  61. Laz says:

While Rove and Libby are distracted, maybe we can get someone to find out where the Anthrax came from. The big hands aren’t holding the rocks down anymore, so someone needs to start looking under them and find the truth!

  62. Losing Faith says:

Yes, yes people have and do think that could be a purpose of S&B and/or the other “scarcely known” groups tied to this Admin. It freaks me out to think along those lines mostly becuase it looks like they’re doing a GREAT job of it.

As a first-timer to the blogosphere, I am sure someone has already posted this thought somewhere, but as stakes in the whole Plamegate affair rise higher and higher, my question/comment is this: since Ashcroft was forced to recuse himself in this matter, isn’t there also a huge conflict of interest if not danger in having Fitzy report to Gonzales, who, though not so tied to Rove, is undoubtedly as pathologically loyal to Bush as is Harriet Miers?

I am hardly comfortable that one of Bush’s biatches is probably privy to to most of the facts in the case and therefore in the best possible position to mitigate negative outcomes or otherwise find a way out for his boss?
