Bush Calls For Fuel Conservation, Rove Cruises to Work in Jaguar

Despite increasing evidence that a federal grand jury is zeroing in on him, Karl Rove is still living his life of luxury. New York Times’ White House reporter Elisabeth Bumiller said on a recent radio program that, in attempting to keep with President Bush’s call to limit non-essential travel and conserve gas, the White House is encouraging staffers to turn in their parking passes in return for free fare on the Washington Metro subway system. But guess who elected not to participate in the program:

CURWOOD: Now, you’ve been talking to some of the White House senior staffers about their habits, as I understand it, and I’m wondering what they’ve told you. What did Karl Rove, the White House Deputy Chief of Staff, tell you when you asked him –

BUMILLER: Well, he didn’t actually respond. I asked him how he was conserving and he sent me an email back asking me how I was conserving.

Rove appears unwilling to give up his morning ride to work in his Jaguar.

Rove’s commuting habit is one of many mixed messages that the Bush administration is sending on conservation. NPR reports that at the same time the Department of Energy is asking Americans to conserve, “it’s also cutting funds for research on energy efficiency.” And Bush, for his part, doesn’t seem to be doing much to limit non-essential travel.

he’ll soon be forced to give up his sweet ride if he won’t give it up voluntarily

  2. Dartanyon says:

Soon he’ll be cruising to prison in a van and then back to Awwstoon, TX in a U-Haul with his tail between his pudgy legs.

  3. Pete Bogs says:

there’s nothing surprising here… all the ideals that the Bush Team put forward do not actually apply to them… they’re the very definition of hypocrisy…

  4. Mary Poppin says:

Why should we conserve on gas when the WH does not do this. Bushie going to LA abd Miss. over the weekend.
How much does this cost the taxpayers. They are a bunch of hypocrits.

  5. Pete Bogs says:

also, Rove would have to face the general public were he to take mass transit… right now he’s in hiding and doesn’t want questions from anybody…

  6. Anti Warhol says:

Well, in all fairness to His Royal Porcineness, the hardworking, overwhelningly liberal democratic populace on the DC Metro would absolutely eat him alive.

  7. doug says:

you’re resorting to stories like this?
this is the type of petty nitpicking I expect from limbaugh and hannity, not “think progress”.
please, I beg. no more. it lowers the integrity of all the other valid reports and good work you do.

Don’t you know, laws are for the “little people.”

  11. Pablo in Mexico says:

#10 – In Bushlandia, taxes are for the little people too.

In desperate need of treasury income because of the tax cuts to the rich, Bush is going to propose to congress, and it will pass because they love slitting their own throats, that the IRS do away with all deductions pertaining to mortgages.

This is nothing more than a tax on the middle class.

  12. Jay says:

Perhaps we could think of Rove cruising into the White House for the next few days in his luxurious Jag as the last meal or that cigarette that you smoke before you get executed?

Ooops, did I say executed? I meant locked up.

  13. Lesly says:

Heh. Must be a slow news day morning.

  14. progressive and proud says:

Of course, Pablo. Shouldn’t everyone be able to buy their own house with cash?

  15. Dartanyon says:

Fitzgerald’s Pursuit Now Suggests Not a Narrow Case, but a Broader Conspiracy

Isn’t it good to know the adults are in charge?

The Wall Street Journal is reporting Patrick Fitzgerald, the special prosecutor investigating the leak of the CIA agent’s identity, is investigating not a narrow case on the leaking of the agent’s name, but perhaps a broader conspiracy rising to the top of the Bush administration.

  16. kindness says:

Why am I not offended that he drives a Jag?

I might be more gleeful if I knew it was an old 60’s XKE cause I know what kind of maintanence & headaches those beautiful beasts were.

Do I expect to see administration people riding around in Priuses? Well, as long as they bought them with their own money, it’d be really cool. But I don’t expect that from this bunch. They’re SUV/limosine types.

  17. Mary Poppin says:

It would be nice to buy a house with all cash.
Did you say that the IRS might take the deduction away on Mortgages. That really sucks.

  18. tomaig says:

So this is what passes for “progressive” these days, eh?
    Nonsensical non-sequiturs?
“Despite increasing evidence that a federal grand jury is zeroing in on him, Karl Rove is still living his life of luxury.”…

Sniping at Rove for his ride to work?
I wonder just how many takers there were for this program that, according to the linked transcript, allows “…staffers who turn in their coveted White House parking passes [to] get free fare on the Washington Metro subway system.” Yep, I’ll just bet there were absolute throngs that were willing to trade their WH parking pass for some subway tokens.

Seriously – if your employer gave you a deal like that – stop driving your own car to work every day and we’ll give you free tickets to smelly, dirty, crowded public transportation – would YOU take them up on it?

  19. Mary Poppin says:

If old Bushie had to pay for his transportation he would not be running around all over the country. He gets plenty of money for being President we should not have to pay anything to him. They get to many perks.

  20. progressive and proud says:

Yes, Mary, it sucks. This means that the very poor are not affected, as they don’t own a home and the rich don’t need the deduction. So, yes, only middle class will be the only class actually HURT by this.

Aren’t repubs great? I love them so much I could poke my own eye out with a fork. And believe me, I’ve thought about some way to take the pain from that this admin causes to the “nonrich” and focus it on my eyeball for a minute or two.

  21. Mary Poppin says:

#19 Yes I would take the bus if I could. I would have to drive to a park and ride to take a bus. It was nice I did not have to drive on the Freeway. If it was free that would be even better.

  22. Jay says:

    tomaig #19,

Soon (maybe 7-10 years), it won’t matter what we want in the way of commuting options, anything other than mass/public transportation will be a luxury that the middle class on down will not be able to afford. The current paradigm is about to shift, irreversibly. If you currently live a long distance from your workplace and you have no access to public transportation, now might be a good time to relocate. It may suck, but sometimes reality can be that way.

  23. Terry C. Potter says:

Boy, Think Progress, you’ve finally found a really thought provoking item for getting some real serious feedback. Has anyone ever checked as to what grade of fuel Rove actually uses in his Jag. I’ll bet he fills it up with the highest octane available. What a waste. Of course this is still cheaper than the bottled water that all of you liberals think is so essential to life.

  24. Lesly says:

    Tomaig wrote:

I would. While I drive an economy car I wouldn’t mind taking public transportation and joining the “filthy masses” in my commute if it were available. That’s how my poor parents got around after migrating to the U.S. I’d rather be reading The Onion than flicking gazes at the mirror to make sure some speeding idiot doesn’t cut it too close.

But I’m a lazy liberal. What else would’ya expect?

  25. Jay says:

Actually, if Bushie and the boys wanted to do something about fuel conservation, why not just outlaw NASCAR instead of showing up at Talladega on AirForceOne for a photo op? I know it sounds like blasphemy to you conservatives…..but why be a hypocrite?

  26. Mary Poppin says:

    # 24 What do you mean that of course this is still cheaper than the bottled water that all of you liberals think is so essential to life?

  27. Zookeeper says:

DO AS I SAY, NOT AS I DO!!
    Love & kisses, GWB

  28. Mary Poppin says:

There are fans that like NASCAR. Maybe we could outlaw FOOTBALL OR BASEBALL TOO. Bushie likes BASEBALL but not sure about FOOTBALL BUT I THINK HE HAD A PHOTO-OP AT BOTH.

  29. Jay says:

Whoa, whoa, whoa Mary….wait a minute. We’re talking about coserving fuel not Louisville Sluggers and pigskins….don’t mess with baseball and football :)

  30. Mary Poppin says:

#30 It takes fuel to get to these games so don’t give me that crap. I guess you are not a NASCAR FAN?

  31. Sharon Cox says:

Mary, in answer to your question, how much does it cost to fly air farce 1(sp) on purpose. Read on one of our threads and another source a couple of week’s ago, roughly $6,800.00 per hour of flight time. Tax payer ( that’s us) funds of course. Every thing these liers and thieves do is at our expense, and since they are all millionairs or billionairs they don’t pay any taxes either, thank’s to gwbush. King george and all his little prince and princesses have a good thing going for them selves, not for us…….Blessings

  32. Jay says:

It takes fuel to get to NASCAR events too, point is that NASCAR (and Indy cars for that matter) CANNOT function without consuming massive amounts of fuel and as you know the sport has exploded in recent years. Baseball, for the most part gets played in ballparks that are downtown, with plenty of public transportation for access and it does NOT require massive amounts of fuel (although I’m sure their electric bills are steep….can you say day games). You’re right, I think NASCAR is goofy and I’ll never understand its appeal, but I have no problem with people enjoying the sport/event they love, just so long as they aren’t wasting our valuable natural resources so blatantly. I suppose it wouldn’t be the same if Jeff Gordon were driving a Prius. :)

  33. mysticagent says:

As LEADERS they should be setting an EXAMPLE (that is, by ACTIONS, not just words). If the public transport is “filthy”, then funnel some money and resources to make it “not-filthy”. I think the more important question is: do they pay for their own gas, or is that something that WE the TAXPAYERS pay? I think the latter is true.

  34. Mary Poppin says:

#32 I don’t think you understand what I was trying to say. I agree that Old Bushie should not be using AIRFORCE ONE for PHOTO-OP. I read how much it cost the taxpayers. This is outraged that the RIGHT WING NUTS can get away with this.

#33 Where I live you have to take your car to get to a BASEBALL OR FOOTBALL GAME. BASEBALL AND FOOTBALL GAMES are boring.

  35. Sharon Cox says:

Yep! Misticagent, we pay and they reap the profits, even Rice has close investments to the petroleum industry..All the blind trusts?????? are stagering and obsene…..Blessings

  36. mysticagent says:

Rice doesn’t just have investments in petroleum, she has an oil tanker named after her.

  37. Southwest Bob says:

This administration is all about image and wordsmithing the hell out of everything. It’s the classic, “Do as I say, not as I do.” I doubt that bush is even aware of the problem…. I think he’s so ego involved that he believes anything he does is for the greater good of the country and thus, exempt from any limitation. We must remember, the rules don’t apply to this group. Press conferences, pubic appearances, prez visits, etc. are all staged. This group hasn’t lived in the real world during it entire term. Why start now?

  38. Mary Poppin says:

#38 The administration is above the law. They are living in a dream world and it is going to come crashing down soon.

  39. Sharon Cox says:

Hopefuly Mary, hopefuly. As every one know’s cancer is diffacult to get rid of and right now the right wing is full of it…….Blessings

  40. Lesly says:

Ms. Poppin, it’s not just the Right Wing Nuts that’ve used Air Force One for campaign purposes of late. Clinton is guilty of the same, Bush II just took it to new heights.

If you want reform that matters focus on parties in general.

  41. Sara says:

Not all Jags are bad… my husband is picking up a Mercedes deisel engine to put in our Jag, and then convert to biodeisel! A big project, but then I will have the coolest ride in the world.
But yes, Air Force 1 is a total waste!
Interestingly, last night on Marketplace on NPR, usually a pretty lame show, the essay was talking about how the oil companies are exporting what little the are able to refine, in order to jack up the prices. Nice to hear the story from such an unexpected source.

  42. skybluewater says:

President George W. Bush last week urged Americans to avoid nonessential car trips and promised to impose the same guideline for federal workers.

I would say that Rove’s testimony before the grand jury is quite essential, wouldn’t you? :-)

  43. Sharon Cox says:

Sara, exporting our oil is just the tip of the iceburg. When Bush declared the war in Iraq, Hallaburton got the contracts, no accountability and immediately after all building supplies here in the states went through the roof because the story goes everything was being sent to Iraq for rebuilding. Yah! right, building bases that are not finished yet. We don’t need bases there and as I understand it very little has gone for repairing the damage Bush’s war has caused…Blessings

  44. Ryan Neat says:

    Lesly,

You’re wrong. Not only has Bush taken more vacations in 5 years than any other president has in 8, his use of manpower and resources to travel is unparalled. Your ‘comparison’ is based in lies, deception and nonsense. Get a clue you twit!

  45. Lesly says:

I’m making fast friends I see.

Dear Ryan Neat, thanks for your level-headed response. I don’t think I have to defend Clinton’s vacation record as I never brought up Bush’s. As for comparing travel time between Bush and Clinton, I believe that’s why I mentioned the “new heights” caveat. Watch your blood pressure; I don’t think I’ll be meeting anyone’s standards of sufficient screeching in posts anytime soon,

    Lesly

  46. Ryan Neat says:

    You say:
“As for comparing travel time between Bush and Clinton, I believe that’s why I mentioned the “new heights” caveat.”

    And yet you said:
” Clinton is guilty of the same,”

I disagree. There is no proof that there was a pattern of abuse or misuse of travel by Clinton – the same cannot be said of Bush who has used federal money to take more vacations than it is hard to imagine. Bush makes the french look like they work hard! And I’ve spent a lot of time in europe – that’s hard to do! :)

  47. Lesly says:

Oh, I forgot. And leave strawmen arguments to the administration.

  48. Ryan Neat says:

    And Lesly,

Don’t be a stupid dope and buy the ‘both parties are the same’ nonsense. It’s part of the strategy of propaganda used by the aristocracy of fascism/conservatism, and clearly you believe it too much for your own good. I suggest you read this.

    http://polaris.gseis.ucla.edu/pagre/conservatism.html

And I have lots more. The reichwing always claims the other side commits the same crime, but it virtually always collapses under inspection. Inspect more next time!

  49. Lesly says:

    Ryan wrote:

    Here you go, honey.

While Democratic rival John Kerry digs into his campaign bank account to charter a plane to roam the country, Bush often travels at no cost to his campaign simply by declaring a trip “official” travel rather than “political.”

The 68,000 miles Bush has logged this year on Air Force One include five trips to Pennsylvania.

With rare exceptions, he confines his travels to the more than a dozen states he and Kerry are fighting hardest for, and to places where he is raising campaign money…

It is an advantage that Bush and other presidents before him have enjoyed. President Clinton frequently was criticized by Republicans for his record-setting use of Air Force One in the campaign season, and Bush is exceeding Clinton’s pace.

“It’s really something that’s abused,” said Bill Allison, managing editor of the Center for Public Integrity, a nonprofit, government watchdog group.

    Ryan wrote:

When you compare both parties on paper they are different, but if you believe millions of dollars from corporate donors don’t affect the outcome of Democratic legislation you’re a bigger fool than I thought.

  51. calvinthecat says:

I haven’t read any of the comments, but I’ll bet that there’s more than one that suggests that Turd Blossum wants to drive his Jag because it won’t be long and he’ll be contributing to energy conservation in a big way.

  52. Ryan Neat says:

“When you compare both parties on paper they are different, but if you believe millions of dollars from corporate donors don’t affect the outcome of Democratic legislation you’re a bigger fool than I thought.”

Affect vs. CONTROL IS A BIG DIFFERENCE. Or hadn’t that dawned on you!

Last time democrats were in office FEMA worked and the EPA actually enforced rules. This administration has dismantled both organizations entirely in favor of corporate interests. If you can’t see the difference between this obscenity – then they’ve brainwashed all of the brain cells out of that unused skull of yours!

    What you write is NONSENSE!

  53. Lesly says:

There you go with more straw men, Ryan. You’re not going to do a good job of convincing anyone you’re correct if you introduce new issues into the discussion and imply I’m in agreement with those issues. It might help if you stop thinking I’m a conservative troll, too.

In the meantime, what’s so decidedly “brainwashed” and dopey with the idea that no president, regardless of party affiliation, can use Air Force One for campaigning purposes? You’re so intent, so focused on a desire to see Bush get his just deserts you drool for any news item coming along that may make this White House look bad, then froth at someone like me who’s more interested in reforming and strengthening the Democratic Party and not as interested in the opportunity to gloat at the GOP’s mistakes.

  54. Ryan Neat says:

That’s not a strawman – it’s a fact. Get a clue! ‘independents’ like you are just stupid victims of the propaganda – and you’re allowing yourself to be used.

And based on your email, I don’t believe you – you’re clearly either a troll or an idiot – either way, get over it.

“In the meantime, what’s so decidedly “brainwashed” and dopey with the idea that no president, regardless of party affiliation, can use Air Force One for campaigning purposes? If you can’t see the difference between use, and abuse, no wonder you’re so easily duped.

  55. Ryan Neat says:

    Lesley,

You contradicted yourself with the fact that they pointed out Bush BROKE ALL RECORDS with air force one, and lets not forget the SIZE of the travel group has gotten insanely large with Bush. Lets also forget the amount of ‘personal’ and ‘vacation’ use as well. So no, it’s NOT the same…

    Wake Up!

  56. Lesly says:

Last week I was called a conservative. This week I’m an Independent.

I’ll bow out of the argument and let your impressive insight stand, Mr. Neat. Sarcastically,

    Blah, Blah, Blah…
Typical idiot. When confronted with your own invalid argument you ‘bow out’ and take your ball away with you like you’re doing some favor. You posted crap. I pointed out it was crap. You aren’t doing me a ‘favor’ by bowing out, you’re just walking away from your defeated and bullshit argument…

The reality is there’s a HUGE difference between the parties, both in values AND implementation – as both 9/11 and more recently katrina showed us. The republicans are inept, corrupt and incompetent. Your assessment that both sides are equivalent is NOT borne out by the facts. When Clinton was tooling around in AF1, we weren’t in the middle of a collapse of the oil industry supply you useless twit.

And I called you an ‘independent’, because you’re trying to pretend to be one. In reality, you’re just an idiot – your party affiliation doesn’t matter.

    Nitwit.

Maybe they could make a Public Service Announcement of the twins’ efforts (on a tandem, and all that shit) to save energy by bicycling to the bars and that would allow those daughters of privilege to avoid going to Iraq, right? Oh, they already have a pretty good reason / privilege. I forgot about that. My bad.
