Rove’s defense team thinks charges are likely.

“Rove’s defense team asserts that President Bush’s deputy chief of staff has not committed a crime but nevertheless anticipates that special prosecutor Patrick J. Fitzgerald could find a way to bring charges in the next two weeks,” the Washington Post reports. (Via Washington Monthly)

I am afraid to put too much hope into any of this, but the tension is sure building.
Saddam Hussein’s trial is to start next week, so bad news for the WH will be shared, and his trial will be exploited to the nth degree. Just like they exploited that phony publicity stunt in Tikrit Thursday — where the female officer is really a publicity agent for the Pentagon, who was fulfilling her role with a carefully written script.
    BTW, Where is Cheney lately?

  2. Brian says:

Saddam Hussein is looking forward to telling the world how close he was to the WH.

  3. deegahl says:

Brian: Sadly, you are probably right. Saddam will be pimping his ties to Rummy and all of the other Neo-cons. I wonder how Fox will spin that one. I am guessing they will not cover that part like they have failed to cover the Plame investigation.

  4. Southwest Bob says:

rove’s defense team is setting up the “Fitzgerald has to come up with something so he’s picking on poor rove” defense. The problem rove has is that he’s a behind the scenes snake and it will be difficult for him to whip up public support except through the “They are attacking bush” route. However, except for the die hard neocons, fewer Americans care if bush or his half wit political positions are attacked. bush has been and still is a complete failure at anything he’s tried in life. Now that more and more Americans realize what he has done to screw them and promote the interests of his business and religious right pals, they will quickly move away from him. Sorry rove…. you’re on your own.

  5. Rotwang says:

Saddam may not have much opportunity to squeal. Charges against him are going to be tried serially, rather than in one big omnibus case. They’re starting with a fairly mundane, easy-to-prove ethnic purge; and the Interim Government has indicated that — if convicted — he will be executed in 30 days, no fail, and subsequent trials be damned.

Not all the victims are happy with this arrangement, but Rummy will no doubt sleep sounder at night.

  6. Brian says:

All poll numbers and legal troubles aside I think the real damage, long run, for the country will be unqualified appointments. This is a new phenomena for the public.
The extreme poor quality of this current gov’t has forced people to actually engage in some careful examination of candidates and their friends.
Are we on the verge of real overhaul with election process? I would let Rove skate if it meant actually improving the quality of gov’t.
Are the people who are good at influencing public opinion the people who need to be governing? I think that question has been answered.

  7. Brian says:

And as a side note, Marie?
I sleep good at night knowing that when the world turns to shit because of the neocons the only thing that will save the world will be science. Science will win. Maybe not in our lifetime, but eventually. Science always wins.

  8. The Muse says:

It is interesting that the Miller exoneration statements by her attorney coincide with this last flurry of events.

That tells me she was the “icing” in Fitzgerald’s case. And, just importantly, it knocks down the theory being push by some on the right that she was the one that dug this up and brought it to the WH.

Given her cozy relationship with the WH, I just can’t wait to hear what kind of BS story appears in the NY Times regarding this whole matter.

How twisted is it that the newspaper that stood its ground on the Pentagon Papers is now serving as a prophylactic for an administration that took our nation to war on the basis of lies.

As my idol Johnny Cash might sing, it makes you want to “hang down your head and cry.”

On a lighter note, my Muse has a theory on this case:

“Capitol Corruption Exclusive: Prosecutor to Charge Rove, Novak with Incest”

  10. Keith H. says:

    The Muse,
Do you like the Cash tune ‘I hung my head’?
    Dude, that thing causes tears.

  11. Clyde the Ripper says:

    #8

“Hang down your head and cry” is from the Kingston Trio’s only nymber one hit and their first recording: “Tom Dooly.”

  12. Jesus Christ God of War says:

Of cource Karl doesn’t think he’s done anything wrong. He’s the Queen of the USA! Royalty can do no wrong. Or so he may think.

Fact is, treason is treason. Espionage is espionage.

If it weren’t so serious, I’d be laughing my fool head off at this point. These guys just don’t “get it”, do they?

*** They are the cause of their own down fall. ***

They are so arrogant that they can’t see it. Woe be to them. And woe be to us for as long as they bumble their way through history.

  13. Marie says:

#7 Brian, I agree with you on science. In the end, it will be the salvation of the world. No religious fanatic, no preacher preying on the weaknesses of mortals; if anything is going to save humanity my vote of faith goes to science.

  14. Pablo in Mexico says:

Saddam Hussein was indeed a murderous asshole but for them to state that they are going to give him a “trial” is nothing but a pack of lies.

The strings will be pulled from the shrubs office and Saddam will have no chance to connect the neocons to him, they will kill him first.

You see, the shrub does not believe in justice. If justice were to prevail the Hussein trial would be a long drawn out thing and much would come to light, but no way Jose. Forget it.

  15. Susan says:

Marie, Cheney was on FoxNews the other day telling his lies.

I too am skeptical of the accuracy the Times will report.
But then again, this is their chance to gain some credibility. Lets see whats more important to them, journalism or the destruction of a great nation.

  16. The Muse says:

Having criminals running the country is bad for the country–I agree with him to that extent.

Giving them a pass because it might be harmful to a nation of laws is absurd.

  17. Pete Bogs says:

this is going to be an interesting week for sure… it’ll be great to watch neocons squirm as WH staff are indicted and Saddam tells how they helped put him into power in the first place…
