Bush acted on information he had, and sure it was flawed, but Iraq did have over 20 tons of Uranium that we took out of Iraq after it was found. Some of it had been processed and was capable of being used in atomic bombs or dirty bombs at least. NY Times reported the moving by The US because activist groups were fearing the worst, leaks, spills, accidents that would release the active parts in the environment. So he did not lie, it was a simple fact that misinformation was sent to Bush. Even though Sadam still did not comply with UN sanctions and cease fire agreements. The Congress voted overwhelmingly to go to war, Democrats and Republicans alike. It’s easy to try to blame one person when if everyone was together like in WWII the enemy would break quicker and victory would be swifter. A quarterback of you high school or college football team gets cheered on and that game does not place your life on the line.

Check for glowing references for the American Enterprise Institute and mindlessly repeated pronouncements from on high gleaned from their studies in the MSM and compare to the positive reviews of Clarks homage to himself found in those same pages then get back to me.

By the way, one thing Clark gets right in his book is the failure of previous administrations to act in the face of terrorist attacks against the US since the 70’s as the main reason for their boldness leading up to 9-11 and after. The invasion of Iraq or some other “oil rich” Middle Eastern nation as Clark knew well was inevitable not because of the oil under the sand but because of the nature of the threat trillions of petro-dollars in the hands of Islamic thugs represented.

It’s also interesting to note that the last chapter so critical of Bush seemed to have been added as an afterthought after the book was already written. It’s funny how that happened just in time for the 2004 elections.

What is this American Enterprise Institute that the mainstream media and Bush et al. hold in such high regard??

I’m capable of waxing eloquent on almost any topic but after awhile this banging my head against the concrete stupidity of the majority of posters here wears a little thin. You are mistaken about almost everything. Islam is THE threat. Period. Ossama is just a little turd in the big crapper known as the Middle East. I think the majority of American want to get Ossama but also realize that killing him will not end the Global Jihad that started some 1500 years ago.

Distorting History

These “human rights” and “peace” buzzwords serve to distort the history of US foreign policy. Here again, the US media has failed to mention a crucial “missing link” — a factual piece of information on Carter’s presidency which has a direct bearing on our understanding of the ongoing post-9/11 crisis.

Amply documented, but rarely mentioned in 9/11 news reports, the “Islamic Militant Network” (the forerunner of Osama bin Laden’s Al Qaeda), was actually created during Jimmy Carter’s presidency (1976-1981). In July 1979, Carter signed a presidential directive to launch a secret plan in support of the Mujahideen in Afghanistan. Confirmed by former CIA director, Robert Gates, in his book, From the Shadows, this “secret plan” was instrumental in triggering the Soviet-Afghan war. Most American high school history books describe how the Soviets invaded Afghanistan, “without provocation and with overwhelming force”. America then “came to the rescue” of the Afghan “resistance”. This happened under president Jimmy Carter.

Yet Carter’s National Security Adviser, Zbigniew Brzezinski confirms that it was the US and not the Soviet Union which started the war:

“According to the official version of history, CIA aid to the Mujahadeen began during 1980, that is to say, after the Soviet army invaded Afghanistan, 24 Dec 1979. But the reality, secretly guarded until now, is completely otherwise Indeed, it was July 3, 1979 that President Carter signed the first directive for secret aid to the opponents of the pro-Soviet regime in Kabul. And that very day, I wrote a note to the president in which I explained to him that in my opinion this aid was going to induce a Soviet military intervention….” (Interview with Zbigniew Brzezinski, Le Nouvel Observateur, 15-21 November 1998)

In other words, the Soviet-Afghan war was triggered on the orders of President Carter, the latest recipient of the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize.

The Mujuhedeen were a fiercely independent people (who actually sent fighters in to assist in the first Gulf War – but of course you knew that!!) Al Queda was started with the one eyed murdering MD and his whacked out billionaire protege, Osama. Going to Afghanistan to fight the Soviet “infidels”, bin Laden was able to whip up much outside Arab support – which was welcomed at the time by the Afghans. Your mental degeneration must be blurring actual events and dream sequences.

There are a LOT of factors, some the result of the cultural issues in those countries, some caused by external forces. But americans are making it worse, and not making it better when republicans mismanage as they ALWAYS seem to do.
