Rice Reveals She Has “Cooperated” with Prosecutor in Leak Probe»

This morning, Secretary of State and former member of the White House Iraq Group, Condoleezza Rice, was asked about her involvement in the CIA leak scandal:

WALLACE: Secretary Rice, a new subject. Were you part of an effort in July of 2003 to discredit Ambassador Joe Wilson, who was a critic of the Bush Iraq policy.

RICE: I am not going to talk about, Chris, as you might imagine, an ongoing investigation. I have, like everybody else, cooperated with prosecutor Fitzgerald and am quite certain that he will make his report. But I don’t think that it’s appropriate to comment about those events.

WALLACE: Now when you say you have cooperated with the prosecutor, does that mean, in fact, that you spoke to investigators or to the grand jury?

RICE: I cooperated in all the ways that I was asked to cooperate.

UPDATE: Crooks and Liars has the video.

A couple of revealing bits of information from Rice’s comments:

1) This is the first time Rice has publicly acknowledged that she too has been asked to either speak with prosecutors or appear before the federal grand jury.

2) Rice said she is “quite certain” Fitzgerald will make his report. If Fitzgerald decides not to seek any indictments, he is not required to issue a public report. The fact that Rice expects a report to be made suggests she believes indictments will be coming forth as well.

Seem like even Condi knows these guys are going down.

  2. Ted Says:

Condi is probably the best liar the admin has got. If she can’t downplay the indictments, it means bad things are coming.

  3. Condi for President Says:

    Condi is presidential material folks.

  4. Average TV Viewer Says:

    Golly!
So here’s ANOTHER one?! All these people who know about this Plame gal and Bush STILL hasn’t gotten to the bottom of this?
I’m beginning to think maybe Bush is involved in this!
    Golly!

  5. Doug Says:

I got a question about this issue about whether Fitzgerald has to issue a report. I read the link on the post about the fact that he won’t need to make a report but Dems are pushing him to. I wonder if Congress could subpoena him and ask him to testify about what he learned. Or is he barred from doing that because of some legal ethical code?

  6. Ron Says:

I thought for sure she would be the keynote speaker at the ‘Millions More March.’ However, London was her destination. If it were millions more of dollars, she would have been there. Then, she would have gone to buy another 1200 dollar pair of shoes.

  7. mimalee Says:

When your principal “token ” is forced to go before the grand jury,NG now says the special prosecutor will be issuing report ,of this, she is certain. You can be sure devastating events are about to take place for the present administration.

  8. D.L. Bruin Says:

Just keeps getting better and better, doesn’t it? Sorta like watching a slow-motion train wreck. Call me evil, but I am SO enjoying watching this criminal administration implode.

By the end of this week there’s gonna be whole lotta folks handed indictments. Condi, Steven Hadley, Ari, Rove and Scooter, of course, and (fanfare!) ole Oily Dick Cheney, too. And if Cheney goes down, y’all can be assured he’ll be takin’ the Chimp with him.

I say Good riddance, and may they all rot in prison before they all rot in hell. Treasonous bastards, one and all.

    Peace

  9. BlastFurnace Says:

After reading this post and the one below about Rove and Libby, I think there are two possibilities.

One, Rice has insulated herself from the affair and told Fitzgerald what she knows; so if it goes up to Dick Cheney and he resigns, Dubya can quickly nominate her as the new veep. The 25th Amendment requires confirmation by BOTH houses, but given that most Dems have at least grudging respect for her, there would be no filibuster. She’d be grooming herself for a 2008 run against Hillary.

Two, the indictments that are filed later this month (if any) go up to Dubya himself. Cheney resigns for “health reasons,” Condi becomes veep, then Dubya resigns rather than face an embarrassing trial and she becomes America’s first woman President.

Nah, I’m getting way ahead of myself … but the Perfect Storm may finally be brewing. A failed war, a bungled response to a natural disaster, a misguided Supreme Court nomination, and possibly pending indictments in a terrible case of betrayal. Of course, Dubya can always just pardon everyone including himself and put an end to it all.

  10. waynels Says:

Lest we forget, CR is up to her neck in oil politics. If memory serves, a oil tanker was named for her.

  11. John Groot Says:

Like CIA Director George J. Tenet, the Presidential Medal of Freedom Award will be given to all- Condi, Steven Hadley, Ari, Rove and Scooter, Powell and Dick Cheney. FEMA director Mike Brown might get one too! Plus keys to the U.S. Treasury– also an envelope with Presidential Pardons. Wait there is more, Presidential Bonus Package it is all sent to the tax free island, Grand Cayman Islands next to Halliburton accounts.

  12. Kyle Weston Says:

Condi is a walking catalogue of character pathology, who beautifully exemplifiles the corporatized brain. She is internally dead, self-objectified, and entirely devoid of organic, moral apparatus; the exercise of which consitutes a human being. Her life is a resume. A process of calculated box checking, and she hasn’t had a truly authentic, emotionally informed moment since she was 2 years old. She is plainly suffused with racist self-hatred and will stop at nothing to achieve total whiteness in the big house. Translation: She really IS presidential material… God help us. Again.

  13. Marie Says:

The only difference between them and us is they fear indictments for at least a few of them, and we fear there won’t be indictments of any of them.

  14. Susan Says:

#9 I believe Speaker of the House becomes VP when Cheney kicks it, goes to prison or resigns.

Which means we still have a criminal white house but indictments have a way of making people watch their asses.

  15. Joe Sixpack Says:

Hey #3, Condi for President. You certainly have a good idea on first thought. As a conservative myself, I am glad to see a push to put her on the 2008 ballot. Evidently you have been listening to Sean Vanity and been “Hannitized”, huh? The way he pushes her, you’d think ol’ Sean would like to get into her pants, you know?

But Correct me if I’m wrong, but Condi wouldn’t stand a lesbian’s chance in GOP hell if she runs. Not because she is black, but because she is a woman. For God’s sake, man, she doesn’t even know her place, unlike Laura and Barbara Bush. I mean, get real. Do you seriously think any of us hardcore, rightwing rednecks are going to vote for a woman? And one that don’t even, uh, you know, date guys? Besides, she is too smart and too clever, and can’t be controlled by the far right.

I mean, as a rightwinger I love the backstabbing turncoat and former liberal suckass Dick Morris, so I suggest you read his new book which notes Hillary Clinton will beat Condi in an election and the reasons why.

  16. Revolutionary Says:

Folks the element that is being overlooked in the Plame scandal is the role played by oil interests to get us to invade Iraq in the first place. The investigation by Fitzgerald may have uncovered the role played by corrupt oil interests and corporate parasites in pushing for Wilson to be silenced –otherwise, no Iraq invasion, and say goodbye to no-bid government contracts and future oil exploitation in Iraq.

  17. Steven Josselson Says:

Rice’s involvemement in the leak scandal was predicted by David Sirota and others way back in July. Of ocurse, more than half the Bush administration seems to be tied to the scandal in one way or another, so maybe the call isn’t so prescient.

  18. Susan Says:

Good point Revolutionary. Hopefully some oil execs will be handcuffed to Bubba too.

  19. steve expat Says:

I’d like to share the optimism that people have about indictments, but I am far more skeptical. Miller said “I don’t remember” who told me the name, etc. That’s the classic Ronald Reagan defense, which worked then and will probably work again. I hope I am wrong, but I can’t let myself think that any kind of justice or fairness is possible.

  20. Susan Says:

When Miller is indicted her memory will come back steve. I guarantee it.

  21. Sharon Says:

Condoleezza Rice was a member of the White House Iraq Group, so the cloud of conspiracy to sell the war to the American public envelopes her as well as Rove, Libby, Karen Hughes, Stephen Hadley, and “others.” This fact alone should squelch any political future for the woman. Aside from the question of integrity, her statements/assessments/speeches are maddeningly unfocused and next to impossible to understand. Perhaps only Alan Greenspan is more obtuse. Clearly, Ms. Rice is into self-promotion, Ferragamo shoes, and luxurious world travel….in that order.

  22. BlastFurnace Says:

#15: You’re quite right. I was slightly out of sequence. I meant to say Cheney would resign, then Dubya nominates Condi for veep and she gets confirmed, then he resigns as well. The Speaker would only become Prez if there were vacancies in the two top offices at the same time.

Of course it wouldn’t really matter in the end because either Rice or Hastert would immediately pardon the entire (currently alleged) cabal, too.

And #20: You’re also right about Reagan. I was going to make mention of that on my blog, too, but since so many others have made the point I figured why bother.

No indictments have yet been filed. If they are and Dubya declines to issue a blanket pardon (if he’s worth his salt), they are still just allegations after all. They must be proven “beyond a reasonable doubt,” which means so many things to so many different people.

Just ask the jurors in the first OJ trial. They found him not guilty for rather dubious reasons that had nothing to do with Mark Fuhrman.

Of course, if Condi is listed as an unindicted co-conspirator or faces a trial … well, that changes things, doesn’t it?

  23. wisedup Says:

CR is eyeing 2008, and wants to ‘back away’ from all the dirt. Also on Meet the Press was Freeh selling his book…SELL SELL SELLL…don’t by books by crooks. He is one of the robots still trying blame clinton for everything…what a joke this guy is. Thats like a cop writing a parking ticket, while a murder is going on under his nose.

  24. Jane E. Schneider Says:

Anyone who thinks Condi would make a good president, please remember her words and attitude during the 9/11 commission hearings. This woman is a liar and stupid to boot. One of the stupidest lines I’ve ever heard out of this administration was Condi stating that “…our oceans no longer protect us.” First of all, Condi, they’re not OUR oceans. More importantly, how long have ICBMs been around? The ’50s or ’60s?

Also, you notice that Freeh didn’t bother mentioning this morning in his bitch session that the main reason that he didn’t get the funding he says he asked for so many times is because the Repugnicants controlled both houses? What a slimy rat! And Russert didn’t bother bringing up that, either.

  25. Marie Says:

Jane, I was just going to post something like your last paragraph, when I saw you said it already.
    Thanks!

  26. Curtis Says:

Jane: we must not forget we no longer have transparent elections, anything can and will happen.
We also as a socitey have lost our backbone in that when japan bombed pearl we rose as a nation against them, when the cave dewller convinced people to fly planes into buildings we as a nation crawled into a hole after we wraped our houses in plastic and duct tape.
My point is it’s our fault their in there in the first place!
The House 2006= impeachment=charges of crimes against humanity, mass murder in that order.
With a standing order from the american people that NO PARDON is to be given to any of them!
Give them enough time and the total body count will excede WWII we cannot allow that to happen.

  27. David Says:

As to argument #2: You think Condi somehow indicated an indictment would be the result of this investigation because of her use of the word “report.”

I must point out your theory is entirely based on the premise that she KNEW a report would only be given in the case of an indictment.

You may be giving her way too much credit.

  28. Kuni Says:

In ways that Cheney told her to cooperate?

  29. ewastud Says:

I would just relish if Condoliar Rice herself is one of many indicted ones, and I believe it is a distinct possibility. I think it is likely at the vey least that the Dickster (Cheney) will be named as an undicted co-conspirator (unindicted only because he enjoys immunity while in office, but not from impeachment). If you recall, Cheney made some very public statements (”I did not ask Joe Wilson to go to Niger; I never met Joe Wilson”) which obviously smartly played right into the Rove-engineered smear campaign, even though Wilson never made any claim of receiving a personal request from Cheney to go to Niger, only from the CIA who got the request from Cheney’s office.

  30. DKarma Says:

Condi?? At the Millions More March??? LMFAO…This is the woman who referred to the civil rights movement as and I quote “the counter-culture”. She would have had her ass torn to pieces by that crowd….I wish she would have gone…

  31. snowflake Says:

Just what is the legal ramification for an un-indicted co-conspirator…a $5.00 fine?

  32. purvis ames Says:

Is Dick Morris so out of his mind that he still thinks that La Rice is in the running for president? Someone give him his medication.

  33. Rob Says:

OK, OK, but what’s to stop the following scenario:

    1) Fitzgerald comes out his indictments.

    2) Bush pardons everyone indicted. Maybe we get a token resignation or two, and another BS speech (”…mistakes were made, but we must stay the course…”)

The Republican-controlled Congress won’t allow an impeachment of Bush, and so it ends right there.

If the Dems regain some control in 2006, more might possible then, but that’s all speculation.

Remember how it went with Nixon. He didn’t resign until he knew he himself was going to be impeached. Knocking out a staff member or two won’t change things for us now. We need more.

  34. Lee O Says:

Condoleeza disgusts me. I’m amazed they aren’t all in handcuffs yet…I mean the key figures in the current administration.

Do any of you still watch NBC, CBS, FOX (ugh), ABC, or…any mainstream media? The coverage is weeeeaaaaak.

Why do these things take so long? When is Rove headed to prison?

Talking about Condi for President! Arggghhhhhhhh? Does no one remember her comments after the tidal waves in the Indian Ocean about what a “marvellous opportunity” (sic) … this was for the United States to show how generous it was… You gotta remember these things - otherwise you’re gonna get stuck again. - George

  37. Bob Says:

Doesn’t Halliburton now has the right to pardon these misguided individuals.
I think this power was granted to them in really small print on one of their no-bid megabuck contracts.

  38. yankeluh Says:

Watch the video, watch her body language she is LYING! Damn right she participated in the scam.

  39. ALYCE Says:

she is a liar also, no more buying shoes in NY for you.

  40. Marie Says:

Either Rice was suffering from jet lag or she is exhausted from all of the lying she does- she didn’t look too good.

  41. Mike Says:

they are all guilty of 911 and deserve to have their heads cut off.

  42. Mick Says:

re 45. At last after 44 comments Mike gats to the point, the outing of Plame is a distraction from the real World and is being used, the same as the Miers nomination, for taking the pressure of those seeking the truth behind what happened on 11th September 2001.
At least people in the USA are tackling the issue here in the UK we have a left that believes in George Galloway’s outpourings, which fall in really well with the aims of the neocons (formed by ex-trotskyites) plans.
Wake up PLEASE, before it is too late to save your Constitution, amongst other things.
