The Fissure Grows: Cultural Right Turns On Norquist

Anti-tax activist Grover Norquist has upset cultural conservatives by agreeing to appear as a keynote speaker for the Log Cabin Republicans, a group of gay conservatives. Right-wingers are already lobbing rhetorical bombs:

One pro-family leader called Norquist’s appearance “an act of utter betrayal.”

Norquist’s presence at the fund-raiser was “traitorous,” [Cathie Adams, president of the conservative Texas Eagle Forum,] added. “If he was a serious economic conservative, Grover Norquist would not have accepted the invitation or the honorarium for speaking at a fund-raiser for a group bent on the destruction of traditional families,” Adams said.

But rhetoric is one thing. Questioning Norquist’s role in the conservative movement is another. And Tony Perkins, president of the influential Family Research Council, has done just that:

Grover has spent years working to assemble a coalition of fiscal and social conservatives and his decision to aid those who are trying to destroy the institution of marriage is truly a disappointment and will no doubt split this important coalition.

  1. JimB Says:

"Split this important coalition"? Wait, that implies that social neoconservatives don't care about fiscal responsibility!

  2. Ryan Neat Says:

That term is an OxyMoron, the right has no culture!

  3. barrisj Says:

Given the fact that ol' Grovester was up to his elbows in Abramoff largesse, I find it most comical that the religico-right is taking him down for the "Log Cabin" appearance, whereas his collusion with a felonious lobbyist goes unmentioned...such are the so-called "ethics and morality" priorities of these fraudulent and risible "Christians"...feh!

  4. Zookeeper Says:

“If he was a serious economic conservative, Grover Norquist would not have accepted the invitation or the honorarium for speaking at a fund-raiser for a group bent on the destruction of traditional families.”

Really, does one have anything to do with the other?

"Grover has spent years working to assemble a coalition of fiscal and social conservatives and his decision to aid those who are trying to destroy the institution of marriage is truly a disappointment and will no doubt split this important coalition."

I don't know about anyone else here, but I've certainly done my part by making a mockery of marriage. Can't blame the gay population for this one folks!

  5. afterthought Says:

Well, the only "value" these guys seem
    to consistently support is hypocrisy.
    Crooked Crony Concervatives must go!

  6. Rotwang Says:

Grover is also the Administration's liaison to pro-Muslim groups, is married to a Muslim...and (over at FreeRepublic) he is rumored to be a convert himself.

From a conservative standpoint, he just seems to make ALL the wrong friends.

  7. Quisp Says:

I'm firing up the ol' microwave and doing me some popcorn popping!

  8. The Muse Says:

To quote the man himself: (you just won't believe it)

Dr. Phil to Intervene in Troubled Republican Family

“...These guys need more than a check-up from the neck-up. I’m going to have to do a full cranial colonic. I mean they got more troubles than a trailer park,” said Dr. Phil...

  9. Andrew Says:

Woohoo! Them there fireworks is PURTY!!

  10. bill d Says:

These guys will eat themselves from the inside out and they don't need anyone's help. Let's focus on working to unseat them in 2006. I challenge everyone (myself included) to actually get involved and do something positive to work toward tipping the balance of power in the gov't in our favor.

  11. Alvord Says:

The economic conservatives, the neocons and the cultural conservatives have been living in the same house in an illicit threesome for years. They were bound to break up and it is just starting to get ugly.

  12. Rotwang Says:

Just remember: Conservatism is a Big Tent...and it's full of freaks and clowns.

  13. mysticagent Says:

Myself, I would prefer tipping the balance back to BALANCE. All power corrupts. The idea of the arrangement of our system was to avoid the corruption of power (as they were still drafting the constitution Jefferson was adamant about wanting a limitation on the presidential terms, for just that reason. Our forefathers never envisioned the politics to become a two-party system, though, and there are not enough checks and balances to work with a two party system as we stand - unless there are limitations or regulations, say an equal number of seats/positions filled by each side and no unbalancing occurring. This, though, has many negative sides to it, but it is more practical than continuing as we are, where one side can achieve a domination, and then arrange the laws and rules to their liking or to maintain their domination... all attempts of which are anti-American and a step toward tyrranny).

  14. Pete Bogs Says:

after the Log Cabin Republicans refused to endorse Bush last year, I wrote them to remind them that under no circumstances would Bush back THEM on anything... a gay GOPer is essentially an Uncle Bruce; certainly "gay GOP" is an oxymoron, based on that party's institutionalized intolerance... vote Democrat, guys, and we'll sort the taxes thing out later!

  15. kindness Says:

They might as well say Grover is Gay.

And if he was, so what? His ideas (tax wise) are still the ideas of an idiot. Tax the middle & poor & let the rich keep all theirs.

    Jeezs.

  16. portly Says:

Nobody ever called the Dems saints while they held power, but these RePugs are funny to watch! One head exploding after the other. The PlameGate matter might just cause the whole lot of them to spontaneously combust!

  17. J Dubya Says:

They don't know what to do. And when they're in doubt, they fall back on their old stand-by, gay-bashing.

  18. bill d Says:

#10 - Agreed. All I was implying is that I am hoping for Democrats to regain control of the senate.

As a fiscal conservative and a social liberal I personally prefer the idea of a moderate Republican congress with a moderate Democrat in the executive branch.

    *ducks*

  19. Ryan Neat Says:

    bill d,

But your premise is that republicans are fiscally conservative. Hasn't Reagan, Bush I & Bush II helped you to realize that this is 'mythology'?

  20. bill d Says:

That's why I said moderate. None of those republicans you mentioned are moderate, nor are they members of the legislative branch.

If power corrupts, unchecked power does so even more. It doesn't matter if you are a Democrat or Republican. We all want what is best for the country, no?

  21. wisedup Says:

a gay republican...no way....my repub. friends will never believe it....then..Jesus never married, did he?

  22. Marie Says:

Watching the Republicans lately is becoming a source of entertainment.
Grover Norquest is the Grinch incarnate.
Watching Perkins get his knickers in a twist over what he believes are "anti-marriage" associations, is a hoot.
Between the crooks, the criminals, the liars and the wackos, this is quite a show.

  23. afterthought Says:

    Marie,

    Don't forget the trolls.
    Crooked Crony Conservatives must go!

  24. Mike (in Houston) Says:

Good ol' Grover isn't a fiscal conservative -- he's part of the Delay-Abramoff-Reed money laundering set... not to mention at least tangentially involved in Plame-gate for funnelling information through Rove, etc.

He's as nutty as LaRouche on the left.

It's so sad the the LCR's crave attention from anyone GOP so much they have to invite this traitor to talk.

Then again, this way they don't actually have to do anything about the anti-gay amendment in Texas or Maine initiative... blech.

  25. kindness Says:

bush43, Ronnie Raygun certainly aren't fiscal conservatives, but...

The greater bulk of my family back in the North East (NY, CT) ARE republicans of the good kind. Social liberals (they believe in the right to choose, they don't have any problems with people being gay, they D believe in a limited Federal Government, but mostly they believe in fiscal restraint. Don't spend more than you have, don't make your kids and grandkids pay off your own debts) although they call themselves moderates and fiscal conservatives.

They'd be drummed out of the party out here in CA, but back there, they are "normal".

So let's not beat up on ALL republicans, because some of them actually agree more with us than they do with bushco & his merry band of robbers.

  26. JoshDestardi Says:

Gays are bent on the destruction of the traditional family?

    Is there a gay conspiracy?

Last time I checked, most people, even gay ones COME from a mom and dad. I guess it's time to close down the homo conspiracists, and their damn WAR projects, Gaydar and the Skin Flute.

  27. afterthought Says:

    Okay kindness,

but they should vote democratic as
    the crooked crony conservatives are
    creating huge debt while destroying
everything else your people say they
    support.

  28. JoshDestardi Says:

Kindness, I'd welcome the old-school Republicans' return to the table; but you've all allowed the freaks to take over. Now there really is only one American party; Democrat.

  29. kindness Says:

They do seem to have vanished into the wilderness during the last 10 years or so.

I suspect they are now visa versa. I mean, whereas in the old days it was the moderates who owned & defined the party, it was the wacko's who held ground in far flung obscure corners. Now it's the other way around.

  30. Southern Democrat Says:

Could gays in America turn into what Jews were in Nazi Germany? Sure sounds like it to me.

  31. Ryan Neat Says:

    SD,

There's a lot of similarities. Just like there were jewish members of the Nazi Party (Leo Strauss - founder of the NeoCon republican movement for instance) - Mehlman and other prominant republicans are Gay. That kind of self hatred is often intertwined with radical and fringe political movements like the PNAC one.

  32. Ryan Neat Says:

Another republican who is dissenting. Wonder how long before the bottom feeders try to pick the meat from his bones! Watching republicans is like they Myth of Saturn who ate his children for fear of losing power. Old myths hold so much wisdom :)

  33. Laura Says:

So none of these people objected when norquist cavorted with radical islamists with ties to terrorists, but what makes them turn against him is speaking before the Log Cabin Republicans. What strange priorities.

  34. Pete Bogs Says:

none of these "protect marriage" folks has ever explained just how gay marriage would harm the straight variety... if a married couple loves each other, no one else's marriage - straight or gay - should really impact them... if neocons want to protect marriage they ought to work on strengthening it... 50% divorce rate for straight marriages mean they're in trouble regardless of what gay people are doing... oh, and they shouldn't let womanizers like Limbaugh and Gingrich speak for them, either...

  35. Susan Says:

    Republican gays need love too.

  36. Steve J. Says:

Perkin's statement is an early Fitzmas present. :-)

  37. kindness Says:

Thanks for shortening your sales pitch buckfush. Why don't you try actually commenting here instead of trying to sell stuff.

re- why hardcores think gay marriage threatens theirs...could it be that they worry about their mens sexual desires? I mean, do they think if out gays were OK in the eyes of the world (they are, except these folk still want to think it's the 1950's out there) their men would immediatly dump them for some young stud?

Makes me wonder what conservative christian marriages are really like....

  38. AmericanPie Says:

What purpose does a homosexual marriage serve? I hear that next year you guys want to include good looking dogs, sheep, pigs and possibly chickens under certain special circumstances.

  39. I-RIGHT-I Says:

Big deal, let them leave. Any loser that has to self identify as his sexual preference/perversion can't be trusted to work for conservative ideas and values. You can have the Log Cabin Butt Boys.

  40. AmericanPie Says:

You know, the word "gay" was once a perfectly good word and was used by many, but then the homosexual deviants decided to adopt it as their own. I suppose they figured this would be much better than everyone refering to them as queer. I'm sure glad they can't reproduce.

    Comment by AmericanPie

Oh, but they can reproduce. That's why they want to indoctrinate school children and take little Boy Scouts out on camping trips. They will make little queers the same way they were made.

  42. Ryan Neat Says:

    MrWrong,

That's what republicans do, not gay people. Gay men are no pedophiles, any more than straight men are pedophiles. A pedophile is something entirely different, but since you probably are a pedophile, you 'might' already know that. And considering that the only two groups that are homophobic are closeted gay men and peophiles, you've got a 50/50 chance of being one of them.

Now as for 'scouting', how ironic that the HOMOPHOBIC head of scouts who wanted to keep all of the gay people out was ARRESTED FOR KIDDIE PORN. Yes good old Douglas Smith - homophobic exhibit one was a big old pedophile!
    http://www.scoutingforall.org/articles/2005041202.shtml

Now you clearly are mentally disturbed, and it's pretty obvious why. You don't seem to know that molesting a child will not turn them into a gay person, but it might make them a pedophile. Considering your attitudes, I'm guessing that you were molested, and therefore you blame the 'priest?' who did it with making you 'gay'. It would explain your anti-liberal attitude, as the opus dei morons have tried to convince every idiot catholic who will listen that pedophiles are there because gay men are in the priesthood. It's clear that either consciously or subconsciously you feel that you've turned out gay or pedophelic - and therefore you've projected your own guilt on gay people for making you this way.

Whoever molested you MrWrong, they were a PEDOPHILE not a gay person. Your projected anger at yourself is hitting the innocent, while leaving the guilty unpunished! Then again, as a partisan religious zealot, you always seem to have an uncanny knack for missing the mark about everything. Dollars to donuts I haven't!
