“Indictments in the CIA leak investigation case are expected to be handed down by a grand jury on Wednesday, bringing to a head a criminal inquiry that threatens to disrupt seriously President George W. Bush’s second term,” the Financial Times reports.
Looks like tommorow is offically fitzmas. Awesome.
October 25th, 2005 at 11:04 pmIs anyone having a Kerry exit polls moment?
October 25th, 2005 at 11:15 pmKos quotes a source saying that it will be next week. I don’t know if my shoe polish will last that long.
October 25th, 2005 at 11:25 pmFrom story: Frank Luntz, Republican pollster and strategist. said: “If [Fitzgerald] indicts, they [the White House] will have no choice but to attempt to demonise him. I think that is going to be really, really tough…â€
This is the same guru that came up with “death tax” and many other GOP catch phrases that help them move forward their agenda, even against the best interests of those helping to move it.
If Frank Orwell says it’s going to be tough–maybe impossible.

October 26th, 2005 at 12:13 am#2, not so much a Kerry exit polls moment, but an Iran-Contra moment. Have just re-read some of Hunter S. Thompson’s articles during that scandal, it reminded me how sure some people were that team Reagan, and GHWB in particular, were going to get f*cked.
Except, in the end, f*cked meant pardoned and promoted.
My fear is that Fitzgerald will maintain the limited scope of his investigation to the outing of Plame, which will f*ck a few WH operatives and maybe a journalist or two, but will surely allow the big swinging Dicks to walk away from this relatively untainted.
My hope, however, is that Fitzgerald reports that there was a wider conspiracy – the Niger-uranium forgeries – which the WH foisted on America and has since been covering up. On this issue, he might not hand down indictments, but this is of course THE issue that Bushco are determined to keep a lid on.
Here’t the thing… the story-line spinning round the news cycle is about Fitzgerald not exceeding his mandate, indicting on technicalities etc. Dumbass journalists have interpreted this as remaining within the mandate of any IIPA violations re. the outing of Plame, when actually what the WH wants is Fitz to stay away from WMD questions generally. And they are simply softening up public opinion for when later this week it becomes the official line.
There’s got to be two parts to Fitzgerald’s work – there’s the “in scope” outing of Plame for which there will be some Ollie North-level fall guy (Mr X). But then there’s also the “out of scope” Niger forgeries, and when Fitzgerald reports that he discovered this WMD conspiracy, Roveco will go into talking-point/ smear/ diversion overdrive saying that Fitz got his Mr X and everything else is not in his mandate, is none of his business, is national security related etc etc. Expect all the regular GOP talking-head bozos repeating this line over the coming days.
What’s gone before in this investigation is child’s play. When Fitz reports on the WMD conspiracy that needs exposing, it’s gonna be ugly beyond belief.
October 26th, 2005 at 7:51 am#6, You are usually pretty accurate in you assessments; I, too, share the same fear and hope. If, as you say, Fitz exposes the WMD conspiracy, only then will America begin to turn around.
October 26th, 2005 at 10:38 amI dunno. I haven’t been totally infected with the Fitzmas spirit I have to admit. I’d love to see a JUSTICE FUNDAY because I am so p*ssed with this godawful administration yet am reluctant to get my hopes up too soon.
But I maintain that this is ultimately the CIA versus Bushco. The fact Novak went ahead and outed Plame despite specific instructions from the CIA not to do so is the nugget for me. And I do have some confidence that the CIA have some serious sh*t on the Bushies – from their outing of Plame to the WMD baloney that got spun into a casus belli. Just a fact thought that intel often won’t hold up in court and that is a worry.
