Addington Involved In Leak Scandal

Scooter Libby’s replacement as chief of staff to the Vice President is reportedly a man named David Addington. He was formerly Cheney’s counsel, a position he held since 2001. According to the indictment, it appears that Addington was involved in the leak:

18. Also on or about July 8, 2003, LIBBY met with the Counsel to the Vice President in an anteroom outside the Vice President’s Office. During their brief conversation, LIBBY asked the Counsel to the Vice President, in sum and substance, what paperwork there would be at the CIA if an employee’s spouse undertook an overseas trip.

Was Addington aware that he was facilitating alleged criminal conduct?

This Fitz character is OFF THE CHARTS HARD CORE.

    they’re all corrupt

ELECTRIC is the word. I’ve used the word before, but now I truly know what “ELECTRIC” means.

Like being named the next drummer for Spinal Tap, but instead of dying you get indicted?

  5. katy says:

this is a re-re-post, but i’ll say it again, because i am in such awe:

well…that was VERY interesting…i hope ned, randy, scepticalsmith, et al, were watching that press conferance…especially noting the part about “technicalities” – that argument ain’t gonna fly, according to fitzgerald…

i feel like i think i’m in love…”Truth is the engine of the Judicial System”
…wow… the world sure needs more guys/people like that…

  6. bling says:

Actually, Fitzgerald made the point about 20 minutes ago at his press conference that discussions about Wilson and/or Wilson’s wife inside the administration were not criminal.

  7. Brian says:

    dano347,

Now THAT is some funny s*it.
In fact, I think a Tap-style mockumentary is in order for the Neocons.

  8. meg_mac says:

they will have to go outside the party to find someone who is not corrupt. ehat about rove? lets get him next!! and remember… when clinton lied nobody died!!!

  9. Pablo in Mexico says:

That is correct, Addington is involved in this.

But you know that bushlandia just keeps recycling the crininals. Whoe else they going to get?

  10. dano347 says:

I agree Katy; especially the part about Valerie Plame’s covert status. I guess their next weak attempt will be “innocent until proven guilty”, since Fitz said in no uncertain terms how damaging to national security this is. Plame was covert at the time, as Fitz clearly stated, blowing the arguments of Ned, Randy, and the rest of the treasonous Right.

  11. Bison says:

This is just getting started, Fitz has a new office, new grand jury and has just KICKED IN THE DOOR!

  12. dano347 says:

Make it, Brian, I’d buy a gross.

  13. RemoveBush says:

#6, yes that is true, but when that information is provided to people who don’t have the clearance then that becomes a crime. Which is what this whole ordeal is about.

Of course they can discuss it all day or year long with themselves, but when they provide this information to the press then that is the crime. The conspiracy comes into play if they tried to plan out how they would discredit Wilson.

More, I hope, is to come.

  14. wisedup says:

Dominos anywone?…..get them all Fitz, and oh and MR.Fitzgearld, you can marry my daughter.

  15. kjlovell says:

If you will notice, the bush-crime-family always plays the same games…. recycle the criminals. Happened in Watergate, Iran-contra, and Plamegate just to name a few.

I bet big-daddy is telling dumbya, you better REALLY play dumb on this one because I can’t bail your azz out this is even too big for me and my friends to handle.

  20. john cook says:

The most important point in the Frit’s talk was that Plame had been outted. This was passing on classified information. AND damage had been mode to national security. The wonderfully clear talk about the baseball player being hit in the haed by a pitcher [Libby].

  21. The Muse says:

The most important thing that Saint Patrick kept repeating today was that he could not know the truth so long as Scooter was not being truthful.

Scooter is apparently sticking by his story, in spite of a tsunami of evidence pointing to it being a complete pack of lies.

#19 Or perhaps there will some new UBL tape come out. Of course we could find some “credible” info about an “imminent” attack on the NYC subways.

  23. Skid says:

    deegahl,

Don’t forget about Iran. Blair has already started talking tough in regards to the Iranian President’s remarks about Israel. At this point, nothing will truly surprise me.

If Fitz isn’t able to get evidence or leads towards the Bush/Cheney connection in this case then others must pick up where Fitz’s team leaves off. He’s been doing his job well, now its our turn to do our Nation justice.

  26. Ryan Neat says:

    Skid,

Unfortunately Iran is a SERIOUS concern, and only made worse by the rattling of swords in this administration. You don’t corner a wild animal, and that’s exactly what this administration is trying to do.

People who think Afghanistan would be ‘dangerous’ to flush out the mountainous regions should look at Iran on topigraphical a map sometime. There’s a reason that Iraq couldn’t defeat them even with more modern military equipment supplied by us. They’re a dangerous group, in a dangerous terrain. And because we’ve squandered all international good will on the bumbled Iraq war, we’re in a weakened state to deal with them politically and militarily. It’s utter mismanagement and ineptitude in virtually every level of republican leadership. They’re incompetent boobs! And the world is a more dangerous place because of it!

  27. Pablo in Mexico says:

I think old scooter will sit around tonight, and the rest of the weekend, and think about that 30 year potential sentence.

He will then scoot and skate to the prosecutor and tell another lie or two before Fitz can get it all straight.

This does not stop at Rove or Libby, this goes all the way to Bush and Cheney. They knew what their boys were doing and gave, at the least, tacit approval of their actions.

You all saw how Cheney was controlling the media. He would give information to Miller, she would breathlessly report it in a column in the Times, and then Cheney would come out of his undisclosed location, give a little speech, and note that he had just read it in the Times about the WMD.

Brilliant operation, but, they got caught. They all deserve to go down. Now you know why Tenet and Ari resigned, they played it smart and got the hell out.
Maybe someday Powell will decide to stop being the bootlicker and tell what he knows.

Every little bit helps when you are dealing with a nest of criminal.

  28. Geddy says:

This is systemic of what I really dislike about the Republican party: cronyism and isolationism (not in the international sense – although that would be the case also – but rather, in terms of the administration in relation to all others, especially critics and the press).

I know many Republicans and they would be somewhat harmless even productive if they didn’t behave in this manner (usually by blindly towing the party line).

    It’s so simple.

It’s applicable to all of their problems: Rummy, oil gang, and contractor gang=Iraq debacle (including Abu Graib), “Brownie”=Katrina relief disaster, Miers=Supreme Court nomination debacle, now “Scooter”=obstructing justice.

Their philosophy seems to hire incompetent people (not nec. referring to Libby here – he may be a liar but not incompetent – who knows), while at the same time becoming obsessed with pushing an agenda (and lying about it is obviously not out of bounds).

And…I also despise Lynne Cheney on all talk shows as she smugly defends her murderous husband. What kind of woman would marry a two-time DWI’er (Laura doesn’t count because George only has one…right?)

    http://www.thesmokinggun.com/archive/cheney_doc.html

Remember, terrorists are evil murderers because they use airplanes…while vice presidents aren’t because they use high tech weapons. What?!?!?

  29. Scott says:

Beware Dave Addington. He is extremely smart, extremely hard core, a flamethrower. I think, however, that after the sewage spewed from the White House and its sycophant talking heads and think tanks over the past five years (and that incredible Supreme Court decision in 2000), Fitzgerald reminds us once again how critical the rule of law is and (to be a bit smarmy) some of the magnificent aspects of living here. I mean, this guy just stood up to an entire gang of thus who will burn this country down , so long as their asses are watching from the sidelines. Well, welcome to the inferno, boys. But watch out. These f**kers may just torch the place yet.

“operation northwoods” and check back here. You may realize how right you really are. (which would be 100%)

  32. kjlovell says:

Oh, heck I did it for you guys:

    Operation Northwoods
    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
    Jump to: navigation, search
Operation Northwoods or Northwoods was the code name for various false flag actions, including terror attacks on U.S. soil, proposed in 1962 by senior U.S. Department of Defense leaders to generate U.S. public support for military action against Cuba.

The proposal was presented in a document entitled “Justification for US Military Intervention in Cuba,” a draft memorandum (pdf) written by the Department of Defense (DoD) and Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) representative to the Caribbean Survey Group. The draft memo was presented by the JCS to Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara on March 13 with one paragraph approved, as a preliminary submission for planning purposes. McNamara rejected the proposal.

The proposal’s existence was often dismissed as unfounded “conspiracy theory” until the draft memorandum was declassified in recent years through a Freedom of Information Act request by the National Security Archive.

Sound familiar? And who did HW Bush really work for back then? Right – CIA.

  33. Marie says:

It’s becoming increasingly clear to anyone now that Bush knows only a few people he can trust because they are as unethical as he and those are the ones he appoints to various positions — they are all corrupt.

  34. Fitley says:

Turns out Fitz is the one with the WMD’s

  35. kjlovell says:

So, do you think there will be another fake terror alert because dumbya wants to scare us into believing in him?

Anyone else notice since the ‘elections’ are over that we never ever hear of the terror color changing? Ever notice that dumbya never mentions Osamma anymore? How long has it been since Osamma-been-forgotten was mentioned?

Notice that while dumbya was trying to do business as usual at his photo op that someone got in under their radar and shouted at him “War is terror. War is terror. You should resign now. Torture is terror.”
As they pulled him from the building? Notice that the MSM never reported this? We should be equally as mad at the ‘news’ for this too.

I applaud this HERO! Free speech, try it sometime.

  36. Nechayev says:

    More background on Supercreep

    In Cheney’s Shadow
“Where there has been controversy over the past four years, there has often been Addington. He was a principal author of the White House memo justifying torture of terrorism suspects. He was a prime advocate of arguments supporting the holding of terrorism suspects without access to courts.

Addington also led the fight with Congress and environmentalists over access to information about corporations that advised the White House on energy policy. He was instrumental in the series of fights with the Sept. 11 commission and its requests for information. And he was a main backer of the nomination of Pentagon lawyer William J. Haynes II for a seat on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit. Haynes’s confirmation has been a source of huge friction on Capitol Hill.

Colleagues say Addington stands out for his devotion to secrecy in an administration noted for its confidentiality. He declined to be interviewed or photographed for this article, and he did not respond to a list of specific points made in the article.

Addington, 47, was a lawyer and GOP staffer on congressional committees on intelligence and the Iran-contra matter, before Cheney chose him to serve as general counsel at the Pentagon when Cheney was defense secretary.

Even in a White House known for its dedication to conservative philosophy, Addington is known as an ideologue, an adherent of an obscure philosophy called the unitary executive theory that favors an extraordinarily powerful president….”

    Fascists, anyone ?

Remember that the mantra in Watergate was “follow the money.” With the current “Treasongate” scandal I suggest we “follow the yellowcake forgeries.”

Who could have done it and why? Ahmed Chalabi? The Israelis? The Vice President’s Office? The Neocon Cabal?

That would sure explain why they went after Ambassador Wilson – if his poking around in Niger would eventually shed light on the “fixing of intelligence” to market the war in Iraq.
