Fitzgerald: Valerie Wilson Was “Classified” CIA Agent

Fitzgerald: Valerie Wilson Was “Classified” CIA Agent»

According to Wolf Blitzer on CNN, one of the indictments reads:

Prior to the July 14, 2003, Valerie Wilson’s employment status was classified. Prior to that date, her affiliation with the CIA was not common knowledge outside the intelligence community. Disclosure of classified information about an individual’s employment by the CIA has the potential to damage the national security in ways that range from preventing that individual’s future use in a covert capacity to compromising intelligence-gathering methods and operations, endangering the safety of CIA employees and those who deal with them.

  1. Pete Bogs Says:

it seems as if, counter to expectations, Fitz did find Libby guilty of the original charges… OKAY, Kay-B?

  2. Zookeeper Says:

    Libby has resigned.

  3. Philip Morton Says:

What gets me, in the midst of the GOP house of cards falling by their own hand, is the lack of Democratic voice, or OFFENSE. Where are the Democratic talking points? Democrats need solid talking points, that address the real concerns of voters’ day life. People are out of work, can’t pay bills, don’t feel safe. “Culture of Corruption” is not emotional. We need to hear: “Safety, Security, Salary”. That should be a Democrat mantra to their constiuents.

“Democrats will Bring Safety to your communities, Security to the country, and a Salary to your family. We want to run the country, not just run for office. Vote Democrat.”

That will give us majority control.

  4. Sceptimus Smith Says:

So if Wolfie has an indictment that says that, then surely Libby was indicted for violating IIPA?

    Oh wait. He wasn’t. Nevermind.

  5. kjlovell Says:

So will dumbya and scotty still claim they can’t talk about ongoing investigations since rover is still being looked at?

    Hucking Filiarous!

What kind of money did ken starr waste during the witch hunt that he only got similar charges?? And couldn’t that kind of money finance Fitz for say a decade? Honorable and professional Fitz and he is careful with money too.

Are you sure he is a repug? or an independent? I heard that he was a repug, but he is just TOO clean for that.

  6. Andrew Says:

Adios Scooter! Don’t let the door hit yer keester on the way out!

  7. mysticagent Says:

Oh, wait…. the investigation was NOT solely about IIPA. Pay attention. Read the documentation. Turn off Fox news.

  8. SKdeA Says:

Hey Philip! That’s great, succinct and alliterative. Good marketing! Let’s just hope there’s someone in the Dems listening. Email it to Howard Dean!

[…] And apparently, Wolf Blitzer has read another indictment on air that says something similar. Prior to the July 14, 2003, Valerie Wilson’s employment status was classified. Hey Septic - worst case scenario, Scooter spends 30 years picking up the soap. That’s what the press release says. You should read it. It’s awesome.

  11. Innocent Bystander Says:

So when does Cheney and Bush hold hands and do the trip to Fitz’s office for a taped deposition? I wanna be a fly on the wall when Bush gets the visit from DOJ with the subpeona to appear for a little Q and A session, under oath, with Mr. Fitzgerald.

One down, a dozen or so to gooooo….

  12. Innocent Bystander Says:

    Sep-

What’s the RNC fax flash talking points now? Appears “no indictments” are now inoperative. What’s the newest fallback and attack line? “Rove obviously found innocent of any charges?”

  13. RufusEarl Says:

Hey Dem’s, here’s a bumper sticker for the 2006 election cycle. “Conservatism Failed”

  14. duhgopmustend Says:

    dufus SS
Fitzgerald clearly stated in his press conference that the crime of outing an undercover agent was committed. Whether proveable or not in court is another matter. So if anything it is too early for your to gloat and this is not over yet. But I see what the new fascist talking points will be to go along with their rediculous “criminalization of politics”

  15. Gaia sighs... Says:

Fitzgerald last registered as an Independent, but, when he learned that Independent was a registered political party, changed his affiliation to “none”.

Looks like he’s beholden to no one.

  16. Sceptimus Smith Says:

    Dumbgomustard,

Um, NO, he didn’t. He never said any such thing, in fact. He said her employment status was “classified” which is NOT the same as “covert”. If he thought he could prove that a covert agent was “outed” he’d have indicted for it.

    Duhhhhhhhh….

  17. JamDanny Says:

I may be wrong, but Libby’s indictment seems like a slap on the hand to me. I gather that if Libby had simply been truthful to the grand jury concerning his misdeeds, he would not have been indicted. By the way…does anybody know what happened to the 10 or 12 other people we were hearing about who were expected to receive indictments? After all this fishing and probing, all we can come up with is a 5-count on Libby for lying to/obstructing the grand jury? That’s sad…

  18. Sceptimus Smith Says:

Fitz: “This indictment is NOT about the war; will not seek to prove whether the war was justified; people who oppose the war shouldn’t look to this investigation for any resolution about the war….”

    POW! BOOOM! BANG! WHOOOOOOOOOOSH……….

More liberals heads exploding….(the last one was Lyan Neat’s head deflating)

  19. Sceptimus Smith Says:

Fitz: “It’s not illegal to leak classified information….”

My gawd, Fitz is just SLAYING virtually every liberal meme recited over the last two years about this case!!

    BWAAAAAAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!

    Cant….stop….laughing…..must….go….change……underwear….

  20. JamDanny Says:

“…Not about the war…”?, the man says? Maybe so, but last I checked, the investigation had to do with the outing of a CIA agent, in connection with the agent’s husband having taken issue with the Bush Administration’s assertions used in a run-up to taking the US to war in Iraq. People lie to grand juries and obstruct justice everyday, unfortunately. If this is just another lying/obstruction case, why did the prosecutor spend 2 years on something that occurs everyday?

  21. Sceptimus Smith Says:

“If that classified information is the identity of the CIA agent, it is in fact illegal by the IIPA.”

Yes, Lyan, true, *IF*…let me repeat this again for you for about the thousandth time….*IF* the agent is COVERT, as defined very specfically by the law, yes, it would be illegal to “out” that classified information. Clearly, Fitz did not find evidence of any “covert” agent being “outed” as anyone who can plainly read the IIPA law would have known from reading it. Had he, he’d have indicted for it.

As Fitz said repeatedly for the benefit of the stunned liberal media, most of whom thought they were lawyers themselves throughout most of this case, the United States does NOT have an “official secrets” act. Face it man - as conservatives like myself have been saying from day one, THERE…WAS….NO….OUTING. None. Nada. Zip. Nein. Nicht. Bupkis. You got sloppy seconds - congrats. Enjoy your Scooter Martha Stewart Libby conviction, because it’s all your gonna get.

Try not to cry your pointy little head to sleep about it tonight, junior.

  22. W Says:

You guys SUCK! And you’re NEVER beat me!

  23. NicoloM Says:

Orin Hatch stated on CNN that the ethics committee had found Joe Wilson wasn’t truthful. What is that all about? Hatch also contends that Wilson leaked his wife’s identity? Any ideas how that happens? What is Hatch’s liability as an apologist for Libby and trying to encourage national security?
    The “hatch”et men are out…

  24. kindness Says:

don’t bother trying to debate ss or neddy. both are witless twits. Boys, you’d make a Monty Python skit for sure.

    Have a great weekend all.

  25. yankee0451 Says:

Sceptimus - what are you so happy about? You’re happy that Fitz isn’t trying to prove what anyone with a cheap laptop and an Internet connection already knows…that the Cheney regime lied us into a war?

The GOP is rife with indictments and investigations.

You have nothing to be happy or proud about. No American does right now.

  26. Madingo Says:

i don’t know why the trolls here feel vindicated–this is the first white house official to be indicted in 130 years–you may think that is trivial being that lying and cheating is part of your makeup, but as an American I am embarrassed and ashamed of these people who are doing this in our name. And you trolls all show yourselves as the ideological fascists you are by trying your best to make it seem like nothing happened. You guys have excuses for everything and the craziest part is unless you are part of the uber-wealthy crowd you support your own destruction.

  27. Bozo Says:

It’s worth remembering when people belittle the counts listed on the first indictment issued today that, if he’s convicted on all counts, Libby faces up to 30 years in Federal Prison.

I believe that the maximum penalty for a violation of the IIPA is 10 years. If Libby was guilty of such a violation and had decided (straining plausibility) to confess to it, he’d probably be less likely to die in jail than he is now.

There are reasons why the penalties for perjury and obstruction of justice are fairly severe. Some of those reasons don’t always have the desired dissuasive effect: people often convince themselves that they’re clever enough to perjure themselves without getting caught. If they are caught and convicted and face a severe sentence, they may be motivated to finally tell what they know in exchange for a reduced sentence.

The fact that Libby apparently didn’t even do a very good job of lying suggests that he thought the possibility of getting caught in the lie was remote. That may have been hubris, but I’d have to assume that - once he starts thinking about meeting his new roommates - he may be motivated to reconsider that decision.
In that sense, today’s indictment seems like a good start, and I look forward to further developments with great anticipation.

  28. Joe P. Says:

    Sceptimus,

Forget all of the blathering for a minute and answer this simple question for me if you would…. If any CIA intelligence operation was compromised in any manner due to negligence or for some other reason, does that even concern you as a citizen of the US ?

  29. Joe P. Says:

    Sceptimus…???????

  30. KEVIN SCHMIDT Says:

Not only was Plame’s NOC status classified, so was her Bogus company, Brewster Jennings. BJ was set up as an oil consulting company, but really was a front for the CIA.

Robert Novak, traitor, named the company in the column he wrote following the one in which he outed Valerie Plame. That means Novak committed not one but two acts of treason!

Brewster Jennings employees (CIA NOCs) who did not escape from the countries they were spying on, were caught, imprisoned, tortured and executed.

Hey Novak, your hands are dripping with blood!

  32. The Oracle Says:

It appears to me that Fitzgerald has decided to hand off the hot potato “issues” that go to the heart of his case against Libby and are of paramount importance to exposing the “culture of corruption” in today’s Republican Party.

From what I can tell, Fitzgerald essentially has indicated that he will not be an “activist” prosecutor delving into the reasons behind Libby feeling compelled to commit perjury, obstruction of justice and making false statements. In other words, Fitzgerald has apparently decided to blow off getting to the bottom of “why” Libby lied and “what” motivated Libby to lie.

So, Fitzgerald will not reconstruct a historical timeline dating back before Bush started war in Iraq, with all the administration hype about Iraqi WMD, which Mr. Wilson rebutted, which caused some neo-cons to retaliate by exposing the CIA NOC identity of Mr. Wilson’s wife, which goes to the heart of why Libby lied and tried to cover up the lie.

From what I can tell, Mr. Fitzgerald has decided to punt these hot button “issues” to Congress, and into the hands of any stout-hearted, patriotic souls still remaining in Congress who might want to conduct hearings into the impeachable offenses of the rogue Bush administration.

Fat chance that this will happen.

In other words, Fitzgerald has said it’s not his job to hold a presidency accountable for any impeachable misdeeds like lying our country into war. He is indicating in his indictment of Libby that he believes it is Congress’ responsibility to look into this preamble of the Plame affair…if anyone in Congress is interested.

Which is why the 2006 elections are shaping up to be so important. Concerned citizens who actually care about our democracy, and honesty, and integrity (unlike some of the trolls above) must employ our power of impeachment (i.e., the right to vote) to remove from office all the Republicans (and even some sell-out Democrats) who are currently obstructing the bringing of the Bush administration to justice.

And, Mr. Fitzgerald, by limiting his indictment power to what amounts to the bare minimum has aided and abetted the continued raping and pillaging of our society by all the neo-con nuts. Which makes me wonder about his so-called “independence” and his ulterior motives.

  33. V. Holmes Says:

I think the Dems are smart not to jump on the band wagon of bashing the Repubs. I believe that if you give most people the chance, they do a fine job all on their own to self implode. Most people are pretty darned good at digging their own graves and they can do that just fine without my help. God forbid that the Dems sink to the level of the Repubs.

  34. AlaskaMike Says:

No crime has been committed? No CIA agent was outed? Hmmm. The special prosecutor appointed by the president to investigate the matter has indicted a high government official. The CIA says a CIA agent was outed. That’s the facts folks. I know conservatives say they’re lies, but who believes conservatives any more? They don’t even believe each other. Look at the whole Harriet Miers debacle for proof of that. A republican could tell me it was snowing and I’d look out the window myself before I’d believe it.

  35. danny Says:

So the pendulum starts to swing the other way…..Bush, in desperation is still atempting to to rally the people beind the “we have a job to do, we will keep the American people safe” credo…you know all it would take is another Al queda attack on US soil and Bush is back on top of the game…….makes you wonder if he’s planning one now.

  38. david hoffmeister Says:

The beginning indeed. The goal of the defendant is to stretch things out. Maybe there will be events that stop the proceedings. I once had a cop die while I appealed a traffic ticket. End of ticket. And the longer it goes the more lenient the procecution is going to be as cooperation leads to more arrests. So this is really the beginning. The ratting wont start till the day of the trial. Then is going to bloody.
    Oboy oboy oboy oboy.

I’m hearing that the RNC is outsourcing the internet rolling function to India. Why pay $60.00/hour in the US to spin lies, insult, and smear, when you can get 20 people doing it for $3.00/hour? And improve the grammer and diction at the same time…
