Indictment Dissected: Cheney’s Role

[This is the first part of a Think Progress series breaking down the significance of the Libby indictment.]

There are a few instances in the indictments that point to a larger role that Dick Cheney may have played in the leak. Here are some examples:

1.
Libby was “advised by the Vice President” that “Wilson’s wife worked” at the CIA in the Counterproliferation Division (see #9). The verb “advised by” is oddly-placed and echoes language from fact #16 when Libby “advises” Ari Fleischer about Plame’s identity. The verb seems to be synonymous with “instructed.” This discussion, referenced in fact #9, follows a staff meeting in the VP’s office the preceding day (see #8) in which Wilson was discussed. Was Cheney trying to emphasize what he saw as the most strategic attack to Pincus’s column?

2.
While onboard Air Force Two with Cheney, Libby is reported to have “discussed with other officials aboard the plane” what to say in response to media inquires about Wilson (see #22). See Talking Points Memo for more about Cheney’s role on this flight.

3.
On p.21 of the indictment, a transcript of Libby’s grand jury testimony is provided. The prosecutors ask Libby why he was telling reporters that his source of knowledge for Plame’s identity was “a reporter rather than the Vice-President.”

  1. Mary says:

I can’t wait for the trial. I hope Cheney will have to testify in public about what he knew and when he knew it.

  2. Scooter says:

As character witnesses at my trial, I am planning to have the most honorable men in this nation testify: Dick Cheney, George Bush, and Karl Rove.

  3. beep52 says:

I’d love to see indictments for everyone who engaged in criminal activity related to this affair . But if there’s one thing I’ve learned this week, it’s that most of the speculation about what Fitzgerald will/won’t do is worthless. The prosecutor is going to do what he’s going to do and we won’t know what that is until he does it.

  4. John says:

I agree beep52, but I hope he’s still got an indictment for Rove left in the bag.

  5. mighty aphrodite says:

I don’t know, if I were VP and Ambassador Wilson was running around telling anyone who would listen that Vice President Aphrodite sent him to Niger, I might “advise” my chief of staff that:
    A.) I didn’t send him
B.) maybe his stateside CIA wife had something to do with the assignment.

You gotta admire Joe! The liar has his “victim” lines down pat!!! Good Joe!

  6. John says:

Aphrodite, I don’t understand why you have to argue part B when all you disagree with is part A. Just say you didn’t send him and put out the facts. Why blow his wife’s cover?

  7. purvis ames says:

Is ther a coherent person in the house? Libby is facing a thirty year jail sentence plus 1.5 million dollars in fines. Anyone who remembers John Dean will see Fitzgerald’s tactics immediately. Squeeze one little pig and watch him squeal on the rest of them.

  8. Pablo in Mexico says:

Old scooter had last night, and this weekend to think about things.

I imagine that very soon he will scoot and skate to the prosecutor and pull the string on yo-yo head cheney.

Not if, but when, cheney is indicted, he in turn will scoot and skate to the prosecutor and tell all he knows about his understudy bush, realizing that he could probably die in prison.

All this should happen before the 2006 elections.

  9. Marie says:

MA hasn’t kept up with the news/facts. The CIA has repeatedly said that their people sent Wilson to Niger to investigate uranium claims because of pressure from Cheney himself. Plame reminded her superiors that her husband may fill their need; look into his background. The CIA knew Wilson was former ambassador, had been acting secretary in Kuwait in 1991, had knowledge of the mining industry in the area, he knew the important people, and he agreed to go there pro bono. (Obviously, an example of how no good deed goes unpunished.)

  10. wwallace says:

Faiz, no one was charged with any crime related to “outing” Valerie Plame. But since when did you on the left ever let facts get in the way of your propaganda? :()

  11. wwallace says:

Joe Wilson is a proven liar. That’s all that matters about Joe Wilson.

  12. purvis ames says:

Joe Wilson is a “proven” liar? Well, Scooter’s an indicted one.

  13. kjlovell says:

These wacko-moonbat-rightwing people just can’t understand that Clinton was not even indicted. They attack the victims and ignore the crimes of those they percieve as their own kind.

They also believe (that is what preachers love about them) any bullcrap that is poured down their throats.

I bet this igit wallace in a poorly paid small minded bigot. He probably thinks he is REPUGnican material too. Barbara Bush (aka the Quaker Oats Man) would put him in his place in no time at all.

  14. Susan says:

Hey Kj, I bet this freak of nature criminal lovin wacko-moonbat-rightwing person is blogging from the you know, the place for the criminally insane.
They have computers there ya know.

  15. wwallace says:

Ooh, Ryan Neat, who can’t by his own admission tell a chimp from a human, called me names! What will I do now? How will I go on? :()

  16. Marie says:

How does one honestly claim that Wilson is a proven liar? What reports he brought back from Niger have proven to be true. Indeed, it is the Bush White House that has lied. It is Libby who has been indicted for lying.
There can be no charges of lying on Wilson — what he said has been proven true.
BTYW, he NEVER said Cheney sent him to Niger (as Fox-TV likes to claim) he said that under pressure from inquiries by Cheney to the CIA, the CIA sent him to Niger. His wife did not have authority to send him — she recommended him because of his background — the CIA sent him. Read the op-ed.
Also, Cheney knew Wilson as far back as 1991 when he and Wilson were present in a news film after the Gulf War.
On one hand Fox claims Plame was merely a desk-jockey; on the other hand, they claim she had authority to send Wilson to Niger. They are wrong on both.
Also, he was not paid for this mission. And if one thinks a trip to Niger is a pleasure-full boondoggle, they are wholly mistaken.

  17. wwallace says:

“His wife did not have authority to send him — she recommended him because of his background”

Wilson said she had nothing to do with it, clearly a lie. The CIA said Wilson’s trip supported the idea that Iraq had sought uranium from Niger, he said he disproved that allegation, clearly a lie.

The Bush administration did not lie, Joe Wilson clearly did lie. Those are the facts.

  18. scotus interruptus says:

    wwallace
Come on. Those are not the facts.

Try supporting your lies with some links — you can’t so you don’t

  19. scotus interruptus says:

    wwallace
you’re alot like your heros – libby, cheney

you lie, say anything, for no apparent reason

are you as stupid as they are? or are you as crooked as they are? or are you just ignorant

  20. Marie says:

The facts are, wwallace, that you are hopeless in your blind allegiance to the criminals who occupy the White House. They use people like you to advance their nefarious actions. If you were not so blinded, you might get a glimpse of how they are damaging America.

  21. kjlovell says:

Ever notice that when Nor East Dimentia is around Wally isn’t? And Vice-versa?

The breath is the same, but the voice changed?

  22. kjlovell says:

#16, (Nor East/Aphrodykie/wally/ned/whoever you call yourself today)

We all know a chimp when we see one, he is also known as Dumbya.

A human would be Bill Clinton.

You would be a moonbat-reich-wing-wacko LYING sheeple.

Now go back to your tinker toys, and leave the discussion to the adults. You are a looser and you are very very mistaken in your views. You should go to a blog that actually likes and agrees with you, may I suggest the KKK website.

  23. wwallace says:

Calling me names will never change the fact that Wilson lied and Bush did not.

  24. kjlovell says:

Dumbya lies so much someone else has to call his dog, and you do too.

  25. kjlovell says:

Dumbya says he is the president when in fact he is only the resident. That is a lie.

Dumbya says he is off the sauce when he isn’t. That is a lie.

Dumbya says he served in the military, when he didn’t, he was AWOL. That is a lie.

Dumbya says no one in the Wh leaked the info. That is a lie.

I could go on for days, but I have a life.

You lie too, you have been caught.

    Dumbya is a lying sob.

  26. wwallace says:

No decent, loyal, patriotic American will ever call the president of the United States “Dumbya” and the like.

  27. kjlovell says:

Dumbya says he is the president when in fact he is only the resident. That is a lie.

Dumbya says he is off the sauce when he isn’t. That is a lie.

  28. wwallace says:

Ryan, #30: I have never called Clinton “Dumbya”, you imbecilic Nazi. *L*

  29. kjlovell says:

Dumbya lies, and has lied since he could talk.

As a child, he tortured small animals. His parents were ashamed of him and his actions.

Now most little lying boys that torture animals don’t grow up to become president…. they

Grow up to be serial killers. Food for thought.

wally acts like he has as much to loose as dumbya in this TREASON scandal.

  30. kjlovell says:

Ryan, the truth to the reich-wing is like sunlight to Dracula.

I bet wally dresses in drag….(brown shirts and swastikas)

I told he/she/it that they would be more appreciated at a site that accepted their warped reality…I suggested the KKK website.

  31. kjlovell says:

Or the 700 club website. Or aren’t they the same?

Extreemists are scary in any country.

  32. turk fowler says:

wwallace- It sounds like you’ve been found out! You’re just a dumb nazi kkk dracula bigot yada yada……I’m a little jealous, I can’t get Ryan or kj to writhe like that. I won’t let you win! So here goes….
Ryan and kj- When Wilson says the VP’s office sent him, that would indicate the VP, since he’s probably a control freak reichwinger. Val recommended him and the CIA approved to throw the heat off their mistakes (both imagined and factual). Val and Joe are not innocent, the CIA is not innocent and Cheney is “probably” not innocent. Politics is a full contact sport in the beltway and Joe Wilson assumed the CIA would back him up. Wilson and Val will be hamburger in the machine when this is done, and the CIA and WH will be brushing dust off their sleeves.
    Turk has spoken

  33. Ruling killer elite says:

    leave wwallace alone

    he’s defending his leader

    one for the gipper

and all you wimps can do is ramble on about law and ethics and justice

    you are so pathetic

    you’ll never win

  34. kjlovell says:

You fool no one, keep changing your name and spewing your nazi garbage, but rest assured

    You fool no one

You are only one dimented person with multiple handles.

  35. kjlovell says:

Your full of crap wally/ned/aphrodykie/nor east dimentia, or \

whoever you are calling yourself at the moment.

dumbya lies so much he has to have someone else call his dog.

dumby will be tried in the Hague for war crimes.

crash-cart cheeney engineered this ILLEGAL war along with the help of many of the CRIMINALS you will no doubt be defending here.

KKKarl rove is so crooked he has to screw his pants on.

dumbya’s smarmy school marm wife murdered her highschool boyfriend.

    dumbya is a deserter.

    dumbya was AWOL.

    dumbya is STUPID.

    dumby will be impeached.

get a clue and go away.

The BUSH FAMILY SUPPORTED AND FINANCED THE RISE OF HITLER IN WORLD WAR II

It is no seceret. Prescott bush actually managed slave labor and personally profited from it. Prescott helped move NAZI WAR criminals to America.

The blind trust established for the bush family was started with plundered Jewish wealth.

When bushs assets were frozen in October 1942, they moved back to America, and got their son
HW bush a cushy spot in the military to sanitize the family name.

HW bush quickly rose in the CIA ranks as a covert officer. His role was to recruit and train assigns. He is closely linked to the Bay of Pigs.

the bush family is corrupt, evil and will be destroyed.

  36. kjlovell says:

The bush family is corrupt and supports racism and hate.

    THEY MUST GO!

    VOTETOIMPEACH.ORG

I was soooo wrong, and such an idiot for supporting a murdering administration.

I want to extend a personal apology to all on this blog.

I want to say those of you that thought I was

mighty aphroditie, Northeast Delima, Turk, Joe Sixpack and Jeff Gannon were

    totally correct.

I am only one person, and I have tried to show that there are more than one person that support the
    Bush administration.

I am paid by the administration, and i feel totally dirty and guilty.
