Hume to Juan Williams: “Someone Needs To Hose You Down”»

williams

From Fox News Sunday this morning:

JUAN WILLIAMS: You can try to minimize it, but the fact that you have Scooter Libby, so involved in justifying going to war, and in the posture of trying to smear a critic of that justification. I think is pretty revealing and pretty damaging to the Bush White House. I think they’re going to have to rebuild a sense of trust with the American People. And that’s why when Brit asked this question, why did he have to lie, he felt the need to lie if he did lie, but by all indications he’s going to say I didn’t remember it quite the way this person remembered and all the like. That’s not very strong in my book, and I think Fitzgerald did a terrific job on Friday. But the reason he felt the need was to make it clear that he was not involved in what really was a conspiracy to defame Joe Wilson.

BRIT HUME: Juan, somebody needs to hose you down.

Good to know that Hume has so many thoughtful arguments at his disposal to defend the Bush White House.

UPDATE: Crooks and Liars has the video.

  1. Jim Says:

Is Hume familiar with the history of bigotry and violence against black Americans that included the “hosing down” of black protesters and civilians by police?

  2. MBains Says:

Come on folks! Quit creating Intelligent Conspiracies.

Hume works for Faux. How could you possibly expect him know anything about this country’s recent History?

  3. Pete Bogs Says:

the first thing that came to mind when Hume used the word “hose” was blacks being hosed down the street and attacked by dogs during 60s rallies… BAD, BAD word choice there, Humey!!!

  4. Marie Says:

A totally inappropriate comment by Hume. Not only was it irrelevant to Williams’ comments, it was a personal affront and reminiscent of the Civil Rights movement of years ago, as #1, billy, so correctly points out. Yes, an apology is in order. Hume is obviously very deep in the ideology propagandized by Fox TV to the exclusion of history, facts and insulting, personal remarks.

  5. Stacy B Says:

Brit Hume is beyond offensive and as the days wear on, get prepared for a full court press from Faux News in defense of the White House. But you know, Juan should have defended himself- I used to respect Williams but more and more he has become the typical Faux News Analyst- he gives tempered opinions and fails to challenge the conservatives who spew talking points that often have little to do with reality.

Juan should have turned to Hume and said, “I take issue with that, and here’s why…..”

  6. kevo Says:

Mr. Hume wants to hose down the truth to our involvement in Iraq - that it’s based on a high-powered sales pitch of lies and obfuscations. His intellectual histrionics will never mask the misery suffered by innocent Iraqis, American service personnel and other people of “collateral damage” brought to us as a war of convenience through the morally bankrupt foreign policy of “preemptive strike.” Mr. Humes has all this time been a HOSER, hosing down the truth to the American people. Me thinks Brit knows his destination in the afterlife.

  7. Average TV Viewer Says:

I hope TP is documenting the bizarre opinions of Brooks and Safire for record.

  8. Styve Says:

Youch!! I guess Brit-boy’s true colors have shown!!

  9. twoplustwoisfour Says:

Right after the death of Rosa Parks. Let’s hope every African American and civil rights leader starts asking for his head.

  10. John the Elder Says:

Why does anyone expect intelligent, thoughtful speech from those who inhabit Faux News? These are the brain dead. Let’s not forget that. I have boycotted this station a long time ago just so I don’t have to hear the prattle from these low-lifes. I am not the least bit suprised at how low they sink. They have been in the sub-sub-sub basement since day one. Scaife is their god and chief funder. Yet they persist in damning George Soros who is light years above them. You can’t send them to Hell, they already inhabit the place.

  11. RunningDogLackey Says:

Juan’s reaction shot was priceless. Brit should watch his back.

  12. Andy Says:

What did Juan say in response? Just curious.

  13. Average TV Viewer Says:

I have used the “hose down” phrase more than once to get someone to “cool off”. This is a silly thread unless Judd can elaborate on the context.

  14. HL Says:

  15. Jay Says:

It’s about time that ALL Democrats, leftists and progressives boycott Fox News. Is it really worth it for them to pick up the check and roll up the face time? Boycott the propaganda and let the rightwing Republicans talk amongst themselves. Force them to change their claim fairness and balance to something more appropriate to their lies and spin.

  16. kc Says:

Brit, somebody needs to knee you in the nuts.

  17. Granite State Destroyer Says:

I think it is time for people like Juan Williams and Susan Estrich and Bob Beckel and others to resign from the premier propaganda organ for the the right wing.

Perhaps it is time to let the wingers to “talk amongst themselves” and not give them the fig leaf of liberal, moderate and centrist journalists.

Perhaps also we can do the same for members of congress too.

  18. Jon Says:

Looks like Hume will have to join Bill O’Reilly and Bill Bennett on the “Avenging Angel’s Transgressors List.”

  19. Jeffrey Wood Says:

If I were Juan, I would have jumped at Hume with my hands ready to strangle him, right on camera.

  20. mdhatter Says:

    how clever of him

  21. konopelli Says:

Hume knew EXACTLY what he was saying.

it will be illustrative of his degree of sold-outedness, the extent to which Williams will tolerate being Fox’s house negro.

i figger he just sucks it up and continues…
    .

  22. casual observer Says:

I’m waiting for the “Fox news doesn’t care about black people” campaign to spring up. It would serve them right.

  23. jbos Says:

Fox News…what the White House wants to say but can’t.

  24. dano347 Says:

#7. I just heard Brooks call Social Security “an entitlement program”, and Safire say that the indictments are for the “cover-up of a non-crime” (which Judy Woodruff slapped down by quoting Fitz’”truth is central to our judicial system” line. But the amazing thing to me was how the Dean finally found a pair. He said Bush “was rolled”, and that he’s “now in full retreat”. He also said that Bush has exhibited hubris since the election. Is he getting ready to retire or something? I never seen him act so “off the reservation” before.

  25. Cambridgemac Says:

Yay for Brit! I’m hoping that Faux will provide him with aviator sunglasses, a stun gun, a hose, and any other implements he needs in order to practice Jernalizm.

    Go Faux!

  26. GP Says:

If Juan is still collecting his paycheck, then I guess he can just suck it up like a good little boy. The imagery of a white guy hosing down a black guy was pretty unambiguous to me.

  27. moeman Says:

    hume is a compassionate conservation.

  28. SW Says:

I can’t believe that Hume blew his line! It was supposed to be “Somebody needs to hose you down, boy” Without the boy on the end, it just doesn’t have that bit of southern flair that makes the reference completely unmistakable to the knuckle dragging members of the audience.

  29. Annie Stover Brabson Says:

Brit Hume attacked Juan Williams when he could not effectively counter William’s statements. Typical conduct when you have nothing of substance to say.

  30. Styve Says:

Did you see Williams’ eyes after Hume elaborated on his racist viewpoint?? I thought they seemed a little glassy…hopefully he kicked Hume’s ass afterward!!

What about the racing stripes on Mara’s face!?

    Faux News is a mockery!!

  31. jb Says:

Even if you forgive Hume any stupidity about using offensive imagery, it is grossly inappropriate (and 100% Fox standard operating procedure) to marginalize and insult the ‘liberals’ they have on.

Seriously, Hume is too stupid to be making even a subconscious reference to the 60s. He is not that clever. The shame is that he consistently insults those who provide a modicum of balance.

  32. onlymike Says:

Juan Williams is too intelligent, too articulate, to be sitting in on Fox. I used to relish hearing him on NPR, where he was a discerning host. Now here he is on Fox, forced to sit and take it from the man. It makes me feel very, very sad.

Mr. Williams, you don’t need to take an ounce of this bs.

  33. Paulette Says:

#15 Jay - We need to boycott their sponsors and let both Faux and sponsors know. The bottom line is…well the bottom line.

  34. Monkeyfister Says:

Youch!! I guess Brit-boy’s true colors have shown!!

    Comment by Styve

They sure are: Wonder bread, Miracle Whip and pointy-hooded robe WHITE.

    -mf

  35. bluecayuga Says:

I’m sure he insulted all 2 blacks watching the show. This fox channel could care less about civil rights, poverty, women, social security I can go on and on. The republicans have been brilliant in convincing blue collar working people that they are speaking for them. When the middle and working class americans who were blinded by the flag and the glory of war and believed these conservatives, just how much this president wripped them off, it’s not going to be pretty. The only people I have ever seen who have convinced an enormous group of people that orange is blue, that up is down, that “clean sky” is good for our environment… I could go on and on

  36. NTodd Says:

You know, I hate Brit Hume and think he’s an insensitive, bigoted prick, but the first image that leapt to mind for me was that he meant Juan Williams needed to cool off. This strikes me more like when people get upset about using the word ‘niggardly’, and maybe we should focus our attention on, you know, bigger things than this.

  37. dannyboy Says:

i agree their is some ambiguity in Brits statement. The most important issue is the lack of civil discourse at play here. Fox news is a danger to democracy because it encourages a close minded approach to the discussion of ideas, the fundamental basis of a successful society. of course such a simple, powerful idea is too nuiance for most americans, so…
BOYCOTT, SCREAM RACISM, RELEASE EXAGERATED INDIGNITY, GET A BUZZ GOING ABOUT THE FAKERY TO GET THE T.V. VIEWERS TO FOLLOW…

  38. thot's Says:

If anyone expects Hume to tell Juan Williams that what he said was racist ,got ya another no brainer the White house will openly admit that they helped to out Plame on Orders From bush/cheney and they were going to invade Iraq no matter what stood in their way.

Syria has lost 25 civilian lives this morning to bush/cheney and this neo con war.

After Syria is lebanon then Iran…………Its The Oil and Natural Gas not Demoracy nOt WMDS’s its a Neo Cone war game………

  39. Arlene Says:

Horrible comment from Hume. Perhaps the closet racict needs to be reprimanded.

I think that all should start an e-mail and calling campaign to Faux to show our outrage.

Sorry, the first thing that came to my after hearing this is the horrible atricities that African Americans endured when obtaining civil rights.

  40. jimmy james Says:

I hate Brit Hume and think he’s an insensitive, bigoted prick, but the first image that leapt to mind for me was that he meant Juan Williams needed to cool off.

I don’t think so. This is his subconscious showing the racist, piece of shit garbage of human being he really is.

Hopefully this clip will make its way to C&L or Media Matters.

  41. Bill Says:

Well, of course Hume meant “cool off.” That’s not the point. The point is that Hume is too much of a kneejerk dumbass to recognize the larger implications from a historical standpoint of using that term. If Hume has ever seen footage of African Americans being sprayed with fire hoses, it obviously didn’t have much impact for him. In other words, he’s an a-hole, but most of us know this already.

  42. bill e Says:

The more these fools do the better it is for this country. The citizens take a long time to respond but these actions, cvombined with the growing number of actions is beginning to take a toll on the gop. It is coming. It is coming!
    billjpa@aol.com

  43. Angelo Says:

Juan should should have kicked Hume’s white ass for that statement. Come to think about it, we can never put an end or contain the white citizens Republican Party unless we start getting in their faces, if not up their behinds….

    It coming though, its coming…

  44. Orwell's Doormat Says:

I have never, ever, ever said to anyone, “you need to be hosed down” in response to anything someone has said to me?

Has anyone ever spoken to you like that?

This is racist, frat-boy language being used by a well-known “news” person.

    Totally disgraceful.

What universe do these people inhabit?

  45. NTodd Says:

I have never, ever, ever said to anyone, “you need to be hosed down” in response to anything someone has said to me?

Neither have I. I usually opt for “f**k off, you smegma-brained asshat.” But then, I’m rather uncivil at times…

  46. Davis X. Machina Says:

    Wow.

Juan is usually such an Uncle Tom that I didn’t think anything could make him actually angry.

He’s not completely assimilated into the Fox Borg yet, I guess.

  47. rockygabriel Says:

GOD - STOP ASKING FOR APOLOGIES -

JUST KICK HUME IN THE FACE WITH WORDS - LETS STAND UP LIBERALS & PROGRESSIVES AND STOP BEING SISSIES.

    KICK SOME HUME BUTT! NOW.

WHO DO WE CALL OR EMAIL TO GIVE HUME’S HUMUNGOUS EGO A LITTLE HUMILITY?

  48. tigrismus Says:

If he meant hosed down as cool off, it’s just as bad - that’s what you do to animals, who can’t cool themselves off. People “chill,” or “take five,” or “take a powder,” they aren’t hosed down by others. It’s a demeaning and utterly dismissive thing to say to another human being.

  49. Ed Deevy Says:

Fox News plays a lead role in the Republican fear and smear campaign. I have been advocating a boycott by liberal pundits and Democratic politicians for since I started publishing a blog several months ago. Now that the Bushites are on the defensive this is the time to go after these bastards…

  50. Sxp151 Says:

The weirdest thing is that when you listen to it, Brit Hume seems much angrier and more excited than Juan Williams. I could see “hose you down” meaning a request to calm yourself, but the only way that would work here is if Williams had started yelling. Williams seems not the least bit agitated.

It really comes off as, “Somebody needs to hose you down because I disagree with you.” Hume had to have been thinking to himself, “How dare this black man say that?” Hume’s statement makes no sense otherwise in context.

  51. R.Capitan Says:

Atta Boy ! Brit. You screwed up , you forgot to wear your white robe and hood.

  52. rapier Says:

And it was poor Ron too. A more reliable transmitter of the beltway media consensus you’ll never find.

They shoot looters don’t they Brit?

  53. dano347 Says:

E-mail him, and as if he thinks Rosa Parks should have been “hosed down” for not calmly walking to the back of the bus.

  54. Pete Bogs Says:

from the look on Williams’ face, well captured in the still photo, the association with civil rights was not lost on him at all… he’s to be commended for not throwing a punch at Hume… it would have been totally justified…

  55. wisedup Says:

keep in mind you watching Pox news, from the brain of murdock to the lips of Pox. Hume got points today.

  56. e_five Says:

Brit Hume, the Bull Connor of American journalism.

  57. SombreroFallout Says:

Hume, Snow, and Liasson have always treated Juan Williams like shit.

And I DO mean that. Their barely-concealed contempt is the thing that really raised my opinion of Williams.

Thing is, the rest of the TV media just let those yokels spew the lies and blatant PR, without ever calling them on it.

As though truth-squadding is not a journalistic function any more.

  58. The Indy Voice Says:

I’m a pacifist but I would have knocked Hume on his ass for his comments but what did you expect of Williams? The legacies of these group of mediocre minds is that they are willing to endure abuse, injustice and criminality so long as they’re loyal to their greater cause of (insert “noble cause” here i.e. profit, profit or profit) all is well.

The problem is that neither Hume nor Williams can appreciate how people were tortured and murdered so that morons like Williams could endure abuse from an mouthpiece like Hume who’s only goal is to further the narrow interests of the rich and powerful. Both Williams and Hume (and all of FauxNews for that matter) won’t even be minor footnotes in history because they’ve only taken from this world and added nothing.

  59. cynskeptirealist Says:

The strategy should be to contact Mr. William’s and encourage him to make a principled resignation. Then email Faux every day for the next month relentlessly to fire Butt Fume.

  60. Brit Hume to Juan Williams: “Someone Needs To Hose You Down” - Brokekid.net Says:

[…] (via thinkprogress.org) From Fox News Sunday this morning: […]

  61. RLG Says:

Hume meant to cool off?? He may have, but Juan was calm and respectful with his opinion. He was not a raving lunatic. Look at it again!

He said Juan needed to be hosed down.

Wrong choice of words! That is racists and also included the Vietnam war protesters in the 60’s. Hosing was used quite often.

His comment must not be allowed to stand. I wrote to Fox news and his show.

We need to keep this alive and not let it drop.

Juan did not deserve to be told he needs to be hosed down. Period!

  62. RLG Says:

Who sponsors Brit’s show? We need to write to them as well.

  63. e_five Says:

The stage manager rejected Hume’s suggestion that they keep a pack of German Shepards on the set.

  64. Jimmy Says:

Why would anyone be surprised by such disrespect coming from the people at FOX, and Brit Hume especially?

  65. scotus interruptus Says:

I think Hume’s use of the word hosed has a homosexual connotation. Forget about it. It’s just frat boys playing. Turn off Faux news already.

  66. scotus interruptus Says:

Think progress should establish a rule - no more use of Faux news to generate discussion

    Ignore faux news

  67. Joe Sixpack Says:

You libs need to get a grip. I just checked Hume’s bio and found out that just like Bill O’Liely, Limbaugh and Dick Cheney, he managed to avoid the draft and hide behind deferments to keep from serving during the Vietnam War. Of course, like those arm-chair generals who avoided the draft, he is now a patriotic war-hawk who is finally ready ready to stand up for our country during a time of war. You guys need to understand him. So it took him forty years to grow a set of balls, at least he’s ready to do his part by sending others without question into harms way.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I bet you leftwingers here wouldn’t “hose down” Brit no matter how bad you had to piss, even if his ass was on fire. Not me of course, I’m with Brit. I’d piss on him anytime.

  68. scotus interruptus Says:

    Joe
You may be right - that “hosed” refers to “golden showers”

  69. Linda Goodspeed Says:

I am assuming that Britt Hubris will contend that he never meant it in a raciast way. However, he should be required to prove that he has made that same statement to the big white boys that appear on his show. My guess is that he cannot come up with one other instance that that particular statement has just popped into his head.

  70. scotus interruptus Says:

    Linda
Come on! Juan Williams no more represents African Americans than Brit Hume represents journalistic ability

If you want to attack Hume - this is a very weak flank - why not attack him on his utter mendacity and ass kissing of the neo-cons - this is just silly

  71. brock Says:

I find it amazing that Brit is still trying to smear Joe Wilson, as are all the righties, with the following talking point: “his findings were inconclusive, that’s why the administration was trying to discredit him.”

What evidence is there to support this idea? Everything we know now seems to support the idea that Wilson’s findings were conclusive, and that the administration was absolutely wrong about WMD.

About the bigot behavior, that’s no surprise. Racism is at the root of the Republican party, I’m convinced. It’s just unspoken (for the most part).

  72. goCR Says:

Really, folks. Why be upset at this comment? This is Hume’s stock in trade, it is the hallmark of all right wing pundits to say outrageous things to or about those that oppose any conservative, or conservative issues. Bill Bennett, Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coulter, Hannity, etc, all speak like this to liberals every single day. Every single day. Not one day goes by when they don’t utter the most incredible garbage, in fact they are incabable of anything else. Yawn. TELL ME SOMETHING NEW!

It was just another day in the neighborhood with Faux news, that’s why it is called Faux news.

At least we have Jon Stewart to really tell us what is going on.

  73. scotus interruptus Says:

    Brock
The msm are carrying water for Bush, helping to protect him. It’s what they’re paid to do. The wagons are now being circled around the wh, and cheney is being told to throw himself on his sword to save the Prez

  74. Joe Sixpack Says:

I forgot to mention that Brit Hume has a lot of good qualities that endears him to us rightwingers. His wife is Fox News Vice President and Washington Bureau chief, Rhoda Kim Schiller (Hume). Not that that would have any reason for him getting his job on Fox News. No, he earned his Fox job through his charming personality and, as scotus interruptus notes in #73, his journalistic abiltiy.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but does my outing of Hume’s wife as his career moving benefactor approach the same scale that Libby used on Wilson’s wife? I mean, you have to admit, Brit Hume’s tired ass wouldn’t be going anywhere fast, without his old lady behind him to help secure his opportunities.

  75. scotus interruptus Says:

    Joe
It would seem that Faux news is ripe with sexual relationships amongst the staff - with O’Reilly reaching heights of predatory behavior most likely envied by the Faux lower classes

  76. scotus interruptus Says:

    And Joe
Perhaps Brit Hume fancies Juan Williams in a “hosing” kind of way not apparent to the average Faux watcher

  77. Average TV Viewer Says:

You are a pseudo-intellectual joe sixpack.

  78. Marie Says:

#77, That explains a lot! Don’t worry, though, your outing of Hume’s wife is a safe here.

  79. Average TV Viewer Says:

So Hume thinks Juan is a nigra. Who gives a crap?
The enemy now are journalists who will soon NOT be asking the WH about Libby’s obstruction.
Any piece of s*it who f*cking dares to call the lack of indictment on the primary charge a victory should be shot.
    Starting with Safire.

  80. fgh Says:

If Brit Hume was my father I’d kill myself. Oh wait…

  81. mr. fireplaces Says:

Shame on Fox News for not firing Brit Hume for that racist comment.

  82. Average TV Viewer Says:

I’ll never forget the look on Cheney’s face when he was told to go F*CK HIMSELF.
THAT shook the WH foundation. At some point we’ll stop blaming Rove and Cheney and Libby and the dog next door and Miller and blah blah blah…
We know who the problem is. And here we are still talking about Hume trying to get his numbers up with alittle contraversy..

  83. circusfifthfloor Says:

The scary part of all this is that this country is full of fools(there, I said it) who lap up the Fox garbage as fair and balanced. AMAZING!!!! I hate to think what a world we are leaving our chidren. God help them.

  84. Innocent Bystander Says:

The term “Hose down” is only politically correct when used to explain the need to clean up after returning from a visit to Free Republic.

You think there’s any correlation between the % of African American viewers that tune into Fox and the % of AA’s that support Bush? I do.

  85. ritzy Says:

    Hume is a scumbag.

Hume is not a reporter but rather a paid mouth-piece for this Administration. The Faux news channel is nothing more than the Neocon Network. What I don’t understand is why so many Americans fall for this propaganda. That can’t be that dumb, can they?

  86. Juan2kmo Says:

There is no way to “talking points” this stuff, so all they have left is to attack.

  87. Kanye West Says:

George Bush doesn’t care about black people.

    Nor does Brit Hume.

  88. JIMBO Says:

As an African-American, I know for a fact that the mainstream media, still coming out of a four year coma, will not cover it out of fear. But if I were Juan Williams and I had a cup of hot scalding coffee in my hand, I would have thrown it in his face, throw my mike at him and walk off with my middle finger in the air on live TV.

Juan, for God’s sake, stand up to that goddamned racist and kick his ass.

  89. melior in France Says:

Yes outrage is silly when it’a about national security and manufacturing Congressional consent for war.

No one would dream of telling chucklehead TV blabbermouths sporting throbbing hardons about a semen-stained dress that they need to be “hosed down.”

  90. Mr. Nice Says:

This is the same guy, upon hearing of the tube bombings in London in July and that the markets had dipped, who said his first thought was oh gee what a good time to buy.

He needs to be dragged from the studio and given a leathering he won’t forget.

  91. dx Says:

PLEASE don’t tell me you libs are actually going to try to distort this into an intentionally racist statement…

  92. Alvord Says:

Let’s not forget that Brit Hume is the WASHINGTON, DC MANAGING EDITOR OF FOX NEWS. He is not just a pundit. So, Hume not only disgraces himself with his punk attitude, he disgraces Fox. Fox News needs to be held to the same standards as all the other news organizations. If the managing editors of CNN, NBC/MSNBC, CBS or ABC behaved on air the way Hume does, they would be fired. We shouldn’t just call Hume names, we should call for him to be fired!

  93. jurassicpork Says:

Brit Spume never fails to disappoint. You’d think he’d be happier since the Dow Jones’ average spiked the day Libby was indicted.

This is to inform anyone reading this that this is not jurassicpork but his wife and I regrettably have to inform my husband’s readership that he has suffered a nervous breakdown in light of the Scooter Libby indictment. He had just barely started his Assclowns of the Week when he was seen running naked through the streets of Boston (we live 25 miles west of Boston) maniacally waving a bottle of champagne and screaming, “You’re next, Turd Blossom!” The psychiatric staff tells me that he still has not relinquished the champagne bottle.

Were my husband in his right mind again, I’m sure that he would be gratified to know that his work will go on and that all bloggers who can spare time can pitch in to help him meet his self-enforced sunday night deadline. As it is, he’s in no condition to blog and is only blinking approximately 10-15 times an hour at the state hospital.

Any volunteers would be greatly appreciated.

[…] Hume to Juan Williams: “Someone Needs To Hose You Down” […]

  95. emelda redmon Says:

brit hume is a racist. white people like brit hume won’t say that off tv.to him i would have kick his ass. he is a racist.we don’t need his apologies.because all racist say whats in his heart, and then says i did not mean that. ms e. redmon

  96. FastMovingCloud Says:

Damn near everything that comes out of Hume’s mouth and his network is totally inappropriate. It’s not news. News is when they actually report something without spin or say something that is appropriate. Notify me when that happens. Until then, I don’t want to give these jokers this much attention.

  97. proberts Says:

Black protesters were never hosed down. Sure, you think you’ve seen footage of firehoses turned on civil rights protesters, but it never happened…At least not in “Conservative” history. In “Conservative” history, the past was a glorious utopia and black people were made of chocolate.

  98. Linda S Says:

For what it’s worth - we have been boycotting MSM for at least a year and don’t miss it at all. Even at the gym, if FOX or CNN is on one of the televisions, I don’t do my treadmill walk. The only news worth watching is INN Report and Democracy Now! on Free Speech TV. Then, of course, there’s Air America on the radio. Check it out; you’ll like it. No lies, no bull—-, no right wing extremists, no pundits making excuses for the Bush administration. Just news that you don’t hear on MSM. As they say, “It’s what democracy looks like.”

  99. Miles Gerety Says:

Hume’s hose down remark was just plain rude, which is to be expected. What I found more incredible was Hume’s claim, which immediately followed, that Wilson’s investigation in Niger was “inconclusive” and “could well be used to support” the administration’s claim that Saddam tried to buy yellow cake. Juan Williams failed to correct this outlandish statement. Williams is typical of moderate commentators on Fox. Too often, he lets himself get steam rolled.

  100. CLK Says:

The fire hoses of the early civil rights movement are burned in my memory and that association came first to mind on seeing Britt Hume’s remark. Britt probably thinks that, if the hoses don’t work on Williams, the next step, lynching, would work-permanently!

  101. Pun-Dit Says:

Brit just couldn’t hang with Juan on this one even if he were lynched by the Grand Dragon.

  102. Archie's Grandson Says:

Wow, that’s really outrageous. I can’t believe the dissembling that that network does, and so many people watch them. It’s really sad.

This comment reminds me of the time recently when someone determined I was black (becaue my boyfriend is); then said I seemed dangerous and violent (as I must be, being black); then said I must not like Harriet Miers because she is white (not unqualified). (I happen to be glow-in-the-dark white.) Hume’s remark seems a rather backhanded racist remark to me.

…Having written this before reading even one other person’s post in this thread, I’m glad to see that others see the connection as well.

  103. Maezeppa Says:

Somebody needs take a hose and do something emetic to Brit Hume with it.

  104. Qusan Says:

PLEASE don’t tell me you libs are actually going to try to distort this into an intentionally racist statement…

The problem with “unintentionally racist” statements is that it means that white people still do not “get it!” If Juan were Jewish and Brit told himself to go stick his head in an oven, trust me, there would be some outrage. Racism, intentional or otherwise, will not change until the perpetrators begin to connect the dots.

  105. Archie Says:

Anyone expecting or hoping to see Juan Williams act with principled indignation is probably not familiar with his run at NPR’s “Talk of the Nation,” where he turned the excellent program started by Rey Suarez into a new right-wing propaganda organ.

Juan Williams is as much a mouthpiece as anyone on FOX. His skin color means nothing.

  106. terri Says:

It’s time to stop paying these jerks to watch their ignorant personal opinions. One of the ways that we’ll get back to ‘real news’, is to stop paying.

Cancel your cable today. You absolutely do not need to eat this stuff and say thank you while you vomit.

You can live without TV. You can.

  107. BroD Says:

“The stage manager rejected Hume’s suggestion that they keep a pack of German Shepards on the set.”

You got it backwards, e_five, Hume ddin’t want the shepards because they were smarter and better educated than he is.

  108. John Ehrlichman Says:

Archie, I disagree with your characterization of Juan Williams as a Fox mouthpiece whose skin color means nothing. To the contrary, his career is rooted in civil rights issues and I hardly think of him as propagandist. Are you sure you’re talking about the same guy?

  109. Marie Says:

Juan Williams should go out to have a beer with Alan Colmes. The tokens of Fox TV.
Does anyone think there might be any possibility that when the Bush Co. goes down that Fox may go with them?
I could settle for just Hume, Hannity and O’Lielly.
Anyone see Tony Snow on Maher Friday night? He was a true-to-form Republican — interrupted everyone, hogged the talking time, and was otherwise obnoxious.

  110. SpudgeBoy Says:

    #117

I was wondering who the jerk on Real Time was. That dude was off base on 95% of the topics. Bill had to really ask him “Are you serious?” and not in a joking manner. Just like the way we have to ask our trolls here. That would make him a talk show troll.

  111. k4329 Says:

Brit hume is racist and jerk. We should not watch Faux

  112. Henk Says:

I don’t know if any of you have noiced but Jaun leans very heavily to the right. While Hume’s statement is indeed extremely distasteful, Mr. Williams has chosen to embrace the philosophy of Hume and co. He should not be surpised when they speak thier little minds.

  113. Mary Says:

Whether this remark was intentionally racist or not, it was an obvious put-down. There isn’t any give-and-take or attempt at discourse.
I don’t watch Faux news unless looking for coverage of real news (like hurricanes) when the other channels are on commercial. Don’t watch any of them for commentary; they have the same tired old pundits on with the same tired old inside-the-beltway mass mind.

  114. terri Says:

    Kill your televisions.

  115. Koolhandluke Says:

I just love the fact that someone besides me finally saw Brit Hume for what he is. This guy makes me sick with his conservative Bull—t. He sit’s there in his chair and attacks anyone who dares speak the truth about Republicans. What ever college he went to for Jounalism needs to take his degree back.

Brit Hume no Jounalistic intregity at all and then has the nerve to speak this way to Juan Williams. I watch FOX New daily and I know the Juan Williams although he works for Fox tells it like it is. Brit Hume left ABC because they saw him for the Republican waterboy he is. Birt Hume couldn’t hold Juan Williams’ jock strap when it comes to real fair and balanced reporting. Fox uses this idiot (hume) to advertise their so called “Fair and Balanced” Bull—t commercials.

Now I know why, it’s because they can’t really look the American people in the face and tell the facts as the see them. They have to hire these rightwings political hacks like Hume to spread propaganda for them. The idiot who owns fox isn’t even from the United States, he just owns part of it.

Like one earlier person said, if I’d been Williams, I would have gotten fired for knocking Hume on his A-s, if he spoke to me like that. The whole lot of them (Fox so called reporters) make me vomit.

  116. Joe Sixpack Says:

Marie noted in #117 that Juan Williams and colmes are two tokens on Faux News. Go ahead and say it, Marie. You and SpudgeBoy and the others can call them worse: Faux’s punching bags, Faux-whores, or dipshit pundits looking for a paycheck. But just remember one thing: they are what makes Faux News “Fair and Balanced.”

Correct me if I’m wrong, but while it may be true that Williams is a weak token used to give Hume some kind of ligitimacy, and little alan colmes is only there to make Sean Hannity look good, maybe we should use the term “slugs” instead of tokens. That is, if I was a redneck conservative, I would suggest calling them that. Or “slug-tokens,” or “hosed down tokens,” or “hosed down slug-tokens.” Or “hosed tokens.”

By the way, Hume must have picked up the “hosed down” comment from his pal, Bill O’Lielly, who CONSTANTLY likes to use the term “folks are getting hosed” to make the point to reinforce his claim to being a tough guy. Hume must have thought it would make him sound like a bigshot, too, instead of like the loudmouthed goon he really is. I mean, if I was a progressive thinker instead of a rightwinger I’d be saying that.

  117. karin Says:

i too believe all others with progressive views should resign from faux news. it is a racial thoughtless coment brit hume made. no wonder brit’s son killed himself. imagine having brit as a dad. he is a parody of a truthful human being with feelings…or should i say the anthisisis of one. progressives should not sell their souls for the money fox news pays, no one that watches fox wants a different point of view. they want people punching bags.

  118. Susan Says:

Its statements like this by the neocons that inspire me to ask for an african american on the presidential ticket.

Barack Obama? Donald Trumps running mate? Could be the answer to America.

  119. Marie Says:

Susan, We will see Barack Obama as president one day, I am certain, and America will be better from that day forward. Regrettably, I just don’t think he can make it starting in 2008 (January 2009).

  120. Susan Says:

I thought the same and your probably right Marie but if the Donald runs and asks, Obama could never say no.

  121. JIMBO Says:

If Barack Obama ever became President, his first order would be the infiltration of FoX News. Every one from the pundits and anchors down to Rupert Murdoch would be jailed and interrogated without any chance of a pardon. Brit Hume would be sentenced to spend 24 hours a day for the rest of his life looking at a picture of Emmitt Till, a 14 year old boy, after he was lynched by a bunch of racist animals for whistling at a white woman. That picture should remind him of the animal he has become and how animals killed a decent human being.

  122. cali dem Says:

Will Juan Williams now realize who he is dealing with? I’m not victim-blaming, but Juan has been hanging with the wrong crowd.

  123. Susan Says:

I agree cali dem, anyone with an ounce of respect for themselves should know better than to appear on Fox News.

  124. Dave Says:

Rosa Parks lay in state as Mr. Hume spoke these words. We are all overwhelmed by the irony…

Voice your objections to Brit Hume at brit.hume@foxnews.com and to Fox at Comments@foxnews.com or by phone at 1-888-369-4762 and mail to:
    1211 Avenue of the Americas
    New York, NY 10036

Got this contact information at http://mediamatters.org/

  125. bernita Says:

I’ve heard, in relation to a couple hot for each other in public, “Somebody needs to hose them down.” As in turning the hose on two mating dogs or cats.

  126. Romario Says:

Brit Hume is an ass…and apparently a retard as well for making that comment on the same day the Rosa Parks was being eulogized in Alabama.

  127. Official A Says:

You’re doing a great job, Brit!

Why on earth would a black man think he’d be taken seriously on FOX News? Do they even pay that guy?

  128. Mike In MD Says:

Britt Hume needs to have that proverbial hose that he wants to use on Juan Williams shoved up his ass and turned on full force… of course, that little high colonic would cause 99% of old Britt to be washed away since he is completely full of shit.

  129. Dizzle Says:

If Brit Hume lived in Montgomery in 1955, he would have been the white guy on the bus telling Rosa Parks to give up her seat.

  130. dartanyon Says:

Hume, like any racist, can’t stand it when a black gets all uppity and demands equal and fair treatment with whitey.

I’m suprised Britt Hume didn’t call for the police attack dogs to be released on Mr. Williams.

  131. Big Al Says:

I happened to be channel surfing and stopped at Faux News just as this episode aired. Juan was calmly but assertively giving his take on the situation. Then Hume responded in this very demeaning manner. As you can tell by Juan’s expression Hume’s comment made a significant impact on Juan as it did me. However, Juan responsed calmly. I was impressed.

I realize a lot of people see a racial component to this issue. Guys like Hume are more interested in slapping liberals - not necessarily blacks.

I also saw Roger A. on TV today spewing that garbage that they have never had to retract a story, fire an anchorman, etc. They don’t retract because they refuse to retract. Dan Rather got lit up because he acknowledged an error in his and/or his staff’s journalistic standards. He has a conscience. Brit Hume will do nothing because he has no shame.

Since I saw this happen live I am quite pleased it is getting attention. Hume should more attention than Bill O.

  132. David Says:

    >

    Jim;
Brit lays awake at night stroking himself, dreaming about those days. Sometimes he even calls Trent Lott up and they engage in the GOP equivalent of phone sex lamenting the shame that Strom Thurmond was never elected president.
Yes, he kknows exactly how offensive he was being. But you can’t blame the guy. Juan had him dead to rights that these bastards undermined national security for petty venegence against a man who was exposing Bush Mis-administration lies.

What was Hume gonna do? Counter with facts? LOL

  133. afterthe flood Says:

It is time to hose them all down–the right wing fascists, that is. At its best, this is the kind of demeaning thing that is usually aimed at women to marginalize them. When directed at a calm black person, the intent is both demeaning and racist.

  134. Sunny Says:

BEAUTIFY AMERICA — BITCH-SLAP FOX NEWS!

  135. Don Phelps Says:

These wing-nuts have something wrong with them. All of us have known many over the years. They share their neurosis and psychosis, rich or poor, educated or not, but all are
mean, cheap, sly, dirty, cruel, and lack humane sympathy
or empathy for others. Bush as a boy would put firecrackers in frogs and blow them apart. In my opinion they’re insane. They should never be placed in charge of anything. They certainly should not be in congress or in courts.

  136. Jon Koppenhoefer Says:

I’ve thought of several things to say about Brit Hume but none of them are suitable for posting.

Let’s just say that Hume strongly needs corrective discipline of a physical nature.

  137. Jennty Says:

What struck me is that it looked scripted. Williams was very calm, even toned. He didn’t say anything that would require being “hosed down”. The impression I got was that after Juan was speaking the teleprompter had an “insert insult here” marked on it and Hume being the dumb ass that he is, just pulled that one out.

Faux Nooze isn’t even entertaining to watch. It’s just lame.

  138. BuffaloPundit » Blog Archive » “Fair and Balanced” Says:

[…] More like “Biased and Unbalanced” JUAN WILLIAMS: You can try to minimize it, but the fact that you have Scooter Libby, so involved in justifying going to war, and in the posture of trying to smear a critic of that justification. […]

  139. DBDONNA Says:

BRIT HUME, is a majorly ARROGANT a$$hole and is reflective of the WORST elements IN THE RULING GOP. He is often openly biased and LIES for pay…..and I could probably accept him for what he is….IF IT WERE NOT FOR HIS PROCLAIMED ADHERANCE TO CHRISTIANITY AND CHRIST INSPIRED VALUES. HE IS THE WORST KIND OF HYPOCRITE.

  140. David Duke Says:

I took one look at that guy on your website and I immediately knew he needed to be hosed down…

  141. Gee Duuuhh Beeyah Says:

What make Mr. Williams think he’s going to get anything but this type of nonsense from Fox News - if Juan is going to continually lay down with dogs (the hacks at Fox News), every now and again he’s going to wake up with fleas… and/or anal warts (likely from Sean Hannity).

  142. P KIRBY Says:

YOU KNOW, HUME AND ALL OF FOX JUST LIKE THE BUSH CRIME FAMILY NEEDS TO CHECK THEIR HUMILTY AT THE DOOR!!! PERSONALLY, I DON’T UNDERSTAND HOW JUAN WILLIAMS CONTINUES TO BE ON THAT SHOW?

  143. peephlap Says:

I like them watersports. Maybe he was just flirt’n

  144. Mr Evil Says:

Well, after all Brit is a HUGE fan of Eugene “Bull” Connor.

  145. LOVEYS-MOM Says:

Juan is the only one on that panel that tells the truth; the other ones are just puppets; Juan, don’t despair; continue doing what you are doing; you have all of our support

  146. Ron White Says:

Or, if hosing doesn’t shut up Juan, then perhaps Hume would like to unleash the attach dogs….

  147. john Says:

agree w/#16… BOYCOTT ?? what if the millions of us cnacel our cable /// or just not pay up on time …??
cna we start a movement on this item ????? I for one am sick of this crap … I watched and good for you Juan w/your handling of Kristol (war monger that he is)
I put a call into the public television here after the umpteeth time they solicited my return contribution. I shared that I might consider rejoining only when they balanced things …. I did have a courteous conversation with the manager … I wonder what impact if say tens of thousands in an area did the same ….

  148. Brian Donohue Says:

The mere fact that I’m the 157th person to post a comment to this piece is very significant, and perhaps reflects a prevailing revulsion at the overall attitude of the Bushies and their media mouthpieces. At Daily Revolution we write about the priorities for freethinking people that are arising from such deviance on the part of the right. Our approach is what I refer to as “neo-transcendentalism”–an evocation of some national heroes of this country who have been repressed by the collective established amid the Bushies: Emerson, Thoreau, Whitman.

  149. mei-lynn Says:

I agree that the comment was inappropriate. When I heard Hume say those words, I was shocked, and if you listen carefully, you heard some fool in the background snort with laughter. Not funny.

  150. dave Says:

Mr Williams showed real class by not kicking the idiots ass.Faux news just confirmed what they are by dum dums remark. In case no one noticed they american people have been getting hosed by this administration for the last five years.

  151. Gil Says:

Geez. 159 comments on Hume’s comment that Juan should be hosed down. Of course we know he meant “cooled off”, but no matter. We can make a racial issue of it. Is every comment we speak supposed to be vetted for those who are looking to be victims?

In the last few years that paragon of the Democratic Party, the virtuous and honorable Senator Robert Byrd, (former KKK member), has used the “N” word referring to blacks in public a couple of times. Do you guys find that offensive?

  152. I-RIGHT-I Says:

Mr Williams showed real class by not kicking the idiots ass

    Comment by dave

I think poor old Juan has been hosed enough. I seriously doubt though that he could whip his weight in new born kittens.

  153. kjlovell Says:

I think we should throw a blanket party for Hume and o’LIE’ly, and throw ole pat buchannan in there just for shitsandgiggles.

  155. El Says:

This is what everyone should do:

Send a simple on line email to Juan Williams with the subject line reading:

BRIT HUME: Juan, somebody needs to hose you down.

    That’s all.

  156. Linda Says:

On a reality show about a year ago I think, there was a black woman who was a bit on the ‘odd’ side and causing problems. When she spoke, it was clear she had a chip on her shoulders. After one rather harsh comment another woman replied, “that’s sure the pot calling the kettle black” at which time the black woman went into a rage saying, “I knew you were all racists”.

The moral of the story is, it’s not always a race thing, not always racist. It can be a number of things, but according to our personal issues with the subject at hand, we (now days) tend to think the worst possible case if it has something to do with our opponants politically. I think this is the case here and in many other situations. People are putting their emotional issues above common sense and others are using any opportunity at all (even if not related) to bash the side they hate so much.

It would be nice if people recognized this fact, this dividing and horrifying fact, and stop acting as if everything is a political fight, as if one side is really evil and their side is angelic. As if people are truly out to hurt Amercans for their own greed, it’s not realistic, not pracical and really is a sad state of affairs.

  157. Knee Says:

Get a fucking clue, people. Amazingly, Juan Williams was not offended. Maybe it’s because he isn’t such a naive idiot to think the way you do.

  158. Jack Says:

“As if people are truly out to hurt Amercans for their own greed, it’s not realistic, not pracical and really is a sad state of affairs.”

I am sure Native American feel the same way!!

  159. felice ofril Says:

i remember black people getting hosed down in the 60’s-forty years latter it’s still the same, hose’m, drown’m wash’m away- so sad it was said on the day rosa parks lay in the rotunda–all a big show–nothing has changed—someone ought to hose brit down, it might help his hair

  160. Clay Says:

    How about an alternate explanation…

JW just doesn’t walk around with a chip on his shoulder and isn’t paranoid enough to find racism in everything a white man says. He took it as it was meant, a good-natured jab at his own heated rhetoric.

Racist attitudes are so foreign to BH that he didn’t see the double meaning in his innocent statement to a respected collegue. There is no need for him to apologize to any ultra-sensitive whiners stuck in a time warp.

  161. EK Says:

Clay…I agree with you. I cannot believe that all these people are spending time blowing this comment up into something that it just isn’t. Get over it and move on to something that warrants this degree of outrage such as child abuse, crime, drugs, illegal immigration, etc. No wonder the Republicans think you all are wackos!!!!!

  162. Lisa Says:

Black Americans are too sensitive and are being kept that way on purpose. First, they like the whole race card thing, it’s a way to stay the victim and not rise about that bs. Next, they are being kept there by democrats, who tell them year after sorry year that they NEED them, then need to have the democrats fight for them! Black Americans buy this, for the most part and pass it on to others like it’s true. Black people are perfectly capible without the democrats, they just want their votes, (or would never win anything at all, truth!) and that’s why they tell them the right is after them, they are not liked by the right, it’s all bs….

Look, you have a much beloved Democrat senator who spent years as a LEADER in the KKK, his dad was a leader in the kkk and he said “sorry” only after the secret got out. He has called, (in public and in the senate), black American’s the “N” word…

Then there is Teddy Kennedy, who is a democrat and constantly playing black americans (as the liberals do - while not caring in the real life), he owns 5 oil wells and in 5 states.EVERY ONE of those locations were taken from black folk, they needed the cash, the Kennedy’s gave them the case, BELOW the market rate for the proprety WITHOUT oil under it and NEVER told them (for all 5 spots) that they were on a gold mind, they had oil under their feet, he cheated them and stole from them and today collects fat yearly checks for them, checks that are almost TAX free!

The republican party was created because the democrats did NOT want to give up their slaves, they refused, thus the GOP was formed and later fought side by side with black americans, helped them escape and then fought the civil war with the blacks by their side. Today, the democrats who are using blacks, got them in their back pocket, got them all thinking the opposite of what is true…
    \

And as for you bush bashers - bush gave more to poverty than any president EVER, more to schools in areas that were typically not doing as well because they were in lower income prim. black areas and during bush’s first 5 years, we have had more black americans own homes, faster, than any other president,EVER!

They key is walking the walk, not just talking the talk… people are too ready to hear and be the victims and belive all sorts of things that are fed to them, if it suits their purpose. But still, black people are used by the party…

Look at Moore, who says he was a Flint resident growing up and relates to black better, but he was not a flint resident, but a neighhborhood next to it that was almost 100 white and upper mid. to upper classed residents. He now is a multi millionare (selling lies) and lives in an all white very very rich place he paid over 1.5 million for… He sees reporters in junkie hotel lobbies so people will think it’s the place he is staying, (keep up the lies), when he in reality - is down the block at the Ritz..

People are too ready to believe anything and hate every thing, and not even consider they are being had, taken, played ….

Bush’s 5 year point, less poverty families than in clinton’s 5th year which was more poverty than any president since just after kennedy… yet, they are so taken, they believe the biggest racists (the dems) over reality…

So this desperation to get into office after losing so long, the dirty campaigning of desperate senators are now re-claiming black people and reminding them the right is evil, racists and out to get them and they, the dems are the only ones to save them…

Being taken is not a “must” — it’s a choice… and those who are on your side are not who you believe …. One should never remain as a victim in society and never believe those who tell them they are, they will never rise as a people if they are told they are less…. don’t believe you are less…it’s not real….

Trust me or look it all up, either way, it’s true and there are more examples in the senate we have right now (dems) — you’ll find it if you look, but I do not lie… don’t lie to yourself either, it’s never going to help — happiness comes when you find out the truth and know you are welcome, loved and do not need the left to tell you you are not….

  163. Wes Freeman Says:

I’m a little sick of the juan williams and julian on fox and friends. These democrats and the the ones in government are america’s worst enemy in our own country. They further the agenda of terrorist worldwide.
