Roberts: Blatant Hypocrisy On Investigating Prewar Iraq Intelligence»

Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Pat Roberts (R-KS), today on the Senate floor:

“Well, there’s been a lot of talk about Phase 2. What is Phase 2? Why has it been delayed, if in fact it has been delayed? … It isn’t like it’s been delayed. As a matter of fact, it’s been ongoing. As a matter of fact, we have been doing our work on Phase 2.”

Pat Roberts, 3/31/05:

“I don’t think there should be any doubt that we have now heard it all regarding prewar intelligence. I think that it would be a monumental waste of time to replow this ground any further.”

    “re-plow”? Don’t you have to plow first? Or is this a sexual term I don’t know about?

  2. J Dubya Says:

    do you have his 2004 comments about promising to do phase 2 after the election?

  3. Average TV Viewer Says:

    The lies already starting!

    MR. CHENEY, GO FUCK YOURSELF!

  4. Robert Says:

    Ongoing? Just like Bush/Cheney has an ongoing effort to bring honor and integrity to the the White House.

  5. The Northeast Dilemma Says:

    Go ahead, you fools. This is Democrats throwing their weight around because they think Bush should have named someone they suggested, NOT Alito.

    We will CRUSH you if that’s what it takes. You won’t be allowed to speak in that Senate Chamber if you don’t knock it off and start acting like adults and NOT spoiled children.

    Can you imagine the outrage if the GOP did this in 1993 when they were the minority. You people never amaze me - I pity you.

  6. Average TV Viewer Says:

    Let’s give a thumbs up to Schumer, folks.

    He outed them for name calling and “worse”-he was not afraid to draw specifically on Plame/Wilson/Libby/Indictment.

    GIVE IT UP FOR THE GOOD GUYS!!
    GOOD GUYS WIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    THEY REALLY DO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  7. Zookeeper Says:

    Let’s see it, Pat baby doll, Phase 2, sweetness, you know what I’m talking about, nothing YOU do would be a monumental waste of time. Don’t make me smack you in the eye.

  8. Average TV Viewer Says:

    You still don’t get it NED! IT’S OVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  9. gun toting liberal Says:

    Let’s investigate this with at least half as much zest as Bill Clinton’s lusty (though entirely legal) escapades; that much attention would wear down the wailing wall.

    Patriots on “both” sides should want nothing more than a full and unbiased accounting of the events that actually occurred in the run-up to war. Americans love the truth, as far as I was taught. This, presumably, includes Republicans.

    Even if all of their leaders are thrown in jail as a consequence of discovering it, don’t they want the truth? Isn’t that the very definition of integrity?

    Or am I just a wee bit stupid?

    And to “Judd”, who wrote this–it’s not hypocrisy, its LYING. He just told a big, fat LIE today. Par for the course…

  13. katy Says:

    i just heard schumer say (at the end of a press talk with reid and durbin) - to paraphrase - “if you want to see frustration, just read the press release roberts just put out”….waiting for that.

  15. RemoveBush Says:

    NED, once again you are showing very clear examples of why OUR country is in this horrible situation. It is hateful and selfish people such as you who are causing these problems.

    Let me ask you this? Have you done any investigation into any of the things this administration has told you? For example that 9/11 was the work of AlQueda? Perhaps it was, but it seems to me to be a little odd that out of 67 times before 9/11 our military intercepted aircraft who diverted their flight plan. Yet on this single day, they were no where to be found until the attacks were all over.

    You buy the explainations from the WH? If so, you deserve to have your rights taken from you as this administration is trying to do.

    I know this is difficult for you and your kind, but can you hold a debate rather than acting like a 4 year old and provide sound logic or proof to support your cause? Not just “We are the majority now and we are going to kick your butt”.

    Provide some sound rebuttle.

  16. cyncial ex-hippie Says:

    You won’t be allowed to speak in that Senate Chamber if you don’t knock it off

    And then you’ll just do away with the Supreme Court altogether. And it will be a crime to be liberal. Or assemble except for carefully staged party-approved rallies. We won’t be allowed to speak, except with party-approved talking points.

    Then you’ll really show us!

  17. The Northeast Dilemma Says:

    #5 - this is just beginning. Elections matter and as long as we’re in the majority, this shit will not continue to happen.

    Democrats don’t get it. The fight over the war is OVER. You lost and you will continue to lose as long as you behave like this. We will destroy the left if that’s what it takes. You people dangerous liars who give comfort to our enemies. It’s scary.

    The right wing is unified against this crap.

  18. gun toting liberal Says:

    #4 I wasn’t aware Democrats had any “weight” to throw around. They lost the White House, the Senate, the House… the Right has the Fox network… whither thy “weight” O Lefties?

    Also, I send you warm greetings in the spirit of brotherly love, of patriotism and liveley discourse, and I hope you and yours will be happy and healthy throughout these strange times. The fact that we disagree on these doings diminishes this not one bit.

    Thanks for your pity, but I don’t need it. I have pity for those who are not free.

    BTW, you seem so angry, so very angry. I can tell you, as a former rage-a-holic, this will hurt you, first your insides, then your hairline, then your marriage, and finally your life. Trust me, I know.

    Come see me, a happy and alive man, at http://www.guntotingliberal.blogspot.com

  20. RemoveBush Says:

    NED, I am assuming that your reply #16 is to me.

    NICE REBUTTLE.

    When you grow up, perhaps we can have an adult conversation.

    Your kind will continue to kill inocent people and continue to find a reason to justify it. Just enjoy it while you can, the American people will only live with this so long. Look at Vietnam, the people rose up and showed it’s power and it is just now starting again.

    Let me know when you reach the mental capability above 5 years old so we can try to discuss this matter futher.

  21. Archie's Grandson Says:

    #4: “You won’t be allowed to speak in that Senate Chamber if you don’t knock it off.”

    What a bunch of fascists. You Republifascists are corrupt and have no respect for democracy.

    This subject is very important to this country and to our system of government. Yet all you can hear out of the Republicans is that we’re not dancing to their music. Ridiculous.

  22. The Northeast Dilemma Says:

    #15 - You fascist pigs just can’t get over the war. You lost and there is nothing you can do about it now. Let it go and move on.

  23. Jeremy Says:

    Neo-conservatism is a mental disorder.

  24. Pablo in Mexico Says:

    NED - Exactly what is your type of menatl disorder called, you have any idea?

    I have read many, many comments on many, many web sits and yours are the most inarticulate that I have ever seen.

    Why dont you stick your thumb up your ass and hop along on your elbow - all the way to the dump?

  25. The Northeast Dilemma Says:

    #19 - grow up - don’t talk to me about growing up when Harry Reid is throwing a temper tantrum.

  26. gun toting liberal Says:

    Shame on you all. You shower each other with name-calling, regardless of which side you’re on. Does it feel good? I hope it does, because that’s all it will accomplish.

    The first among you who stops this schoolyard crap will have proven himself (or herself, let’s not be sexist) the better and more mature human. Let your ideas stand for themselves. There’s no need for ad hominem smearing.

    There! That ought to teach you!

  27. Average TV Viewer Says:

    NED’s head just got tossed into Martin Sheen’s lap in Marlon Brando’s den. “This is the end…”

  28. Jeremy Says:

    NED. It’s obvious you are the one having a temper tantrum here in reaction to the closed senate meeting. If you don’t like it troll, then go back to the hole you crawled up from.

  29. RemoveBush Says:

    NED, so asking for accountability is throwing a temper tantrum? WOW! You are in some real need of mental help, and anyone who thinks like that needs it also.

  30. Spudge_Boy Says:

    NeD,

    I say bring it on bitch. How are you going to make me stop telling the truth about what is going on? You think you can stop me with force? I will repest: Bring it on. I am ready to fight spineless little weasels like you. I have been ready for years. Tell your leaders to name the time and place and I will be there waiting for you. And when I say you, I mean you personally.

  32. Marie Says:

    Sen. Roberts is lying. He has been shown for what he has done — stalled, procrastinated, delayed and denied the public of its right to know the facts in this serious matter. He delayed this last November because of the election. After the election, in January, he said it wasn’t necessary any more — it’s old news. I hope the constituents of these rethugs remember how they screwed the public and run them all out of office.

  33. gun toting liberal Says:

  36. Nigel Elliott Says:

    Note the significance of the two dates: October 2004, before President Bush was reelected, and October 2005, after the president was reelected. Those dates make clear why Libby threw sand in the eyes of prosecutors, in the special counsel’s apt metaphor, and helped drag out the investigation.

  40. jjw Says:

    I bet people like NED are trying to get us to have foodfights here, like they do on his favorite news network. (Need I call out which one?)

    Let’s ignore this wedgehead, and just sit back and enjoy the spectacle of his party getting slow-roasted, all the way to next November. It’s going to happen, no matter how much they rant and howl… Let’s not turn this place into some Murdoch-owned foodfight arena…

  41. Ryan Neat Says:

    Lefty,

    Then why not post what you ‘like’ here? Discussing how a group of people should be held accountable is not a waste of time, refusing to do so is a waste of responsibility.

  42. Average TV Viewer Says:

    I would sit down right now and buy NED a Jack ‘n Coke I’m so not caring about NED!

  43. Average TV Viewer Says:

    All we want is the truth! We aren’t afraid of Republicans! We aren’t sorry about elections!

    THE TRUTH!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  44. AckSyn JAckSyn Says:

    I see Ned is Fantasizing again. Pull your head out Insertium.

    WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Democrats forced the Senate into a rare closed session on Tuesday to protest what they decried as the Republican-led body’s inattention to intelligence failures on Iraq and the leak of a CIA operative’s identity.

    Invoking a little used rule, Democrats temporarily shut down television cameras in the chamber, cleared galleries of reporters, tourists and other onlookers, forced removal of staff members and recording devices and stopped work on legislation.

    “At its core, this is about accountability — congressional accountability and White House accountability,” said Sen. John Rockefeller of West Virginia, the top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee.

    Democrats were pressing that committee to produce a report on whether the Bush administration misused intelligence on Iraq’s weapons to justify the March 2003 invasion. No weapons of mass destruction were found.

    Democrats said that report was a year overdue and vowed to close more sessions to pressure Republicans to produce it. “We’re serving notice on them at this moment. Be prepared for this motion every day until you face the reality,” said Senate Democratic Whip Richard Durbin of Illinois.

    Republicans were outraged.

    Your just Mad hahaha. Read Sen. Levins Inquiry yet Insertium. You cant destroy the Movement Polls show the Citizens want answers. More people want Bush Impeached than did Clinton. And we will keep hammering on this Slanted Intelligence issue and put it in the face of every citizen.

    This administration has been shown to be the most incompetent in History and will likely be written that way. And theres nothing people like YOU can do.
    Its a Democracy Remember?

    Now go cry in your Beer, and call your therapist.

  45. Lefty Says:

    Ryan, I don’t have all the answers, not even close. What I can say is that what has been said on this thread does not approach the level of “discussing how a group of people should be held responsible”. You have a brilliant mind. Learn to use it in a positive manner, because we need all the help we can get. To allow brilliance to wallow in anger and retaliation is a huge waste of responsibility

  46. gun toting liberal Says:

    Ah, I guess you guys don’t sound so bad…

    just remember, threatening violence is a crime.

    Comment on therapy well taken. Hey, we all need a little something to get us through, y’know? I can’t fault you for finding your therapy were you will. Still, I can’t for the life of me see why this is therapeutic. Lord knows, it’s not relaxing. I can feel my BP rising whenever I read these hate-filled messages.

    Remember, if we met in a foxhole we’d love one another as dearest brothers/sisters. And make no mistake, this world of ours is one big foxhole. We just need to SEE it.

    O to be a fox in his cozy little hole (and not the Rupert Murdoch kind!), now that Autumn and the blood of politicians are in the air!

    Kudos to #46
    NED gets a little excited. I figured a beer and a Talk might soothe his angst.

  49. The Fool Says:

    Pat Roberts is a complete scumbag who put the interest of his party above the national security of his own country. Disgraceful.

    “You fascist pigs just can’t get over the war. You lost and there is nothing you can do about it now. Let it go and move on.
    Comment by The Northeast Dilemma”

    NED, I already corrected you on this, you are the fascist, as fascism is a RIGHTWING movement. As for ‘getting over the war’, when the war ‘gets over’, we’ll talk. Right now the ineptitude of your dictatorship requires a different response from america’s citizens.

  51. Ryan Neat Says:

    NED,

  53. katy Says:

    good advice for you, ryan, from lefty #45…please take it! i agree with most everything you post, but your anger and name calling take away from it, for me anyway…but i’m a peacenik from way back…”imagine”

    and gun toter, i appreciate your thoughts and especially your dipolmatic attitude… stick around a bit more often…

    we should all write to ried and durbin to express gratitude and congratulations

  54. Styve Says:

    Ignore that Northeast Dilemma juvenile!! I love that he thinks he speaks for conservatives…what an egomaniac and a moronic one at that?!?!

  55. Marie Says:

    NED is more irrational today. Something is wrong — he may be realizing that he is fighting a losing battle.

  56. Marie Says:

    #52, Katy, I already did. I hope everyone here does the same. It’s pretty easy with Email.

  57. Ryan Neat Says:

    Marie,

    Ned’s Zoloft prescription ran out - she’s off her meds and it shows.

  58. Ryan Neat Says:

    It’s clear that republicans cared more about an oil grab than they did about the consequences of that action. The Iraq war is just another example of bad planning, bad policy and bad execution - the 3 hallmarks of all republican ventures.

  59. Ryan Neat Says:

    katy,

    Thanks for the advice, but I’m not angry. As for the ‘name calling’, I only use appropriate adjectives that reflect the behavior of the particular troll. Many of them are crazy and whackos - I simply state the facts. If I were angry my responses would be quite different.

  60. AckSyn JAckSyn Says:

    Here is something that perhaps people may wish to become familair with. This will change your view of History a Bit, perhaps alot, but it does give the public much greater insight into the workings of what goes on behind the scenes. this goes back to 1938 Before WWII, and the time of the Trotskyites.

    I think You will find this most interesting….

  62. Joe Sixpack Says:

    Hey NED, I see you are still here helping me attack the lefties. I can sure use the help after the damage old “Scrotum” Libby and his handlers have caused our side this week. Bush’s poll numbers are still in the tank and all the phony BS he comes up with continues to really stink.

    Correct me if I’m wrong but have you seen the new CNN/USA/Gallup poll just out showing that not only does junior’s polls stink, but republicans in general are going down the crapper with him? Here’s what it shows in case you missed it.

    Better at handling healthcare: Democrats 59%, Republicans 30%. Gasoline prices: Democrats 51%, Republicans 31%. Handling economy: Democrats 50%, Republicans 38%. And the Iraq War? SURPRISE! Democrats 46%, Republicans 40%. I mean, the numbers are so bad that if I was a liberal, I would be laughing my ass off right now! It sure don’t feel good getting our rightwing butts handed to us, does it?

    I’m so pissed right now that I’m going to have another beer and give some serious thought on slapping the crap out of the first pencil-necked conservative I run into trying to bullshit me.

  63. Marie Says:

    E.J. Dionne was on Olbermann tonight — his theory is that Libby stonewalled Fitzgerald because last October was the election year. Subpoenas were issued in August 2004. Stonewalling, coupled with faith that the newspapers would also balk at their reporters being asked to testify on their sources, would get Bush&Co past the election.
    (They had the lying Swift Boaters tearing Kerry apart with lies, and with stonewalling, they could kick the can of pre-war intel down the road.)

  64. AckSyn JAckSyn Says:

    Well Joe Six Pack

  67. Rick's American Cafe Says:

    I just watched Pat Roberts on CNN with Wolf Blitzer. He repeated over and over that we shouldn’t be looking back at all the mistakes as if through a cracked rear view mirror. We should press on and look to the future.

    The administration has used this response many times when they’ve screwed the pooch and gotten caught.

    It made me think of the abusive husband who just beat the living crap out of his wife and then tells her, “Don’t think about what just happened, Honey, you’ve got a picnic to plan for Saturday.

  68. mparker Says:

    Let sad Ned have his say and walk along by, as you would another person screaming nonsense on the street in the city. Do not be unkind, and if you can offer help or comfort then do it. But if dozens have walked before you, and you have seen their attempts rebuffed in anger and threats it may be best to leave him to the poor world which only moves within his damaged mind. Here Ned, eat, drink and then rest sweet boy.

  69. PersonOfInterest Says:

    Rick’s American Cafe said, “It made me think of the abusive husband who just beat the living crap out of his wife and then tells her, “Don’t think about what just happened, Honey, you’ve got a picnic to plan for Saturday.”

    You’ve got it pal!!

    All of this crap about “let’s move on” right now, as if past mistakes need not be corrected, or the present and future consequences need not be examined is part of the current right wing psychobabble. “Let’s move on” is an attempt to obliterate history. It shows a disinterest in learning from past mistakes. But the bottom line is that it is just crap.

    Go Rick!!

    Its not something that we would ever laugh about Joe Sixpack.

    The Dishonesty has caused much harm to Your Party, the Democrats and America in General.

    When reading such words as below, it brings great sorrow to heart and mist to the ocular.

    Lives have been lost, perhaps needlessly. Grandchildren that should have been, may not be.

    This is From a Guy who was in Iraq. Here are his words (David Airhart)
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    David: I was in the Marine Corps Infantry. I learned absolutely nothing of value in the rest of the world. I learned how to shoot guns and how to get yelled at a lot.
    Ron: Jump school? Medic?
    David: Nope.
    Ron: I see that you served in both Afghanistan and Iraq. How long were you in both places?
    David: I was in Afghanistan for 7 months , starting Christmas day of 2003, and in Iraq for 6 months, starting at the beginning of the war in March 2003.
    Ron: Did you do more than one tour either place?
    David: No.
    Ron: What was a typical week like in country?
    David: In Iraq: Mostly doing vehicle check points where we would search vehicles for weapons. We also patrolled cities such as An-Nasiriyah. We searched homes. We would knock on the door. If nobody answered, we would break through the door. We would throw all of their stuff around looking for munitions and stuff to make bombs with.
    Ron: What was your impression of the Afghani and Iraqi people?
    David: Most of the people that I met were really friendly. They seemed scared, anticipating the worst. The ones I met were cooperative.
    Ron: Did it change as you spent more time in their countries?
    David: No, not really.
    Ron: Now, the big question. What made you decide to oppose the US wars in these countries?
    David: Mostly personal reasons. Like the fact that most of the dead bodies that I saw were women and children, innocent civilians. Also, most of my friends that were killed were killed by friendly fire from close air support. It is obvious that there is some hidden agenda behind Bush’s motivation for going to war in Iraq, because they had nothing to do with the 9-11 attacks, and there were no weapons of mass destruction. We should know the real reasons that we are fighting and dying over there. At the very least, we should know that, be it a good or bad reason, it is important that we know why. If it is that crucial that it stays a secret, it is probably too crooked to be worth fighting for anyway.
    The Repukes did the same thing something like 5 or 6 times when “investigating” Monicagate (so they could jerk off without the cameras, I’m thinking). This is much more serious and necessary. This investigation into the lies that got us into this “war on terror” is FAR from over. According to the polls, even the rightwingnuts are starting to ask questions (even goobers don’t like to be made a fool of).
  74. Pablo in Mexico Says:
    When on CNN yesterday, Pat Roberts, one of the alcoholic Senators, hemmed and hawed and could not get his thoughts together.
    This morning on CNN he had thought about things overnight and told one lie after the other. He blamed the democrats on the intelligence committee for not finishing the task.
    Now folks there are 540 or more incidents of pukes using the useless intelligence to argue for the war in Iraq. A lot of it on television. The dems want to show how the intelligence was misused by the pukes but the White House is blocking this effort. That is Phase 2, and that is what Roberts as been stonewalling at the request of Rover boy and the WH.
    Statements like “a mushroom cloud”, etc., is what the democrats want to put out there, but cant. Now it seems that all this shit might come out in one place and the amurkan people can make up their mind whether they were lying and exaggerating, or what.
    In Short:
    The Philosophy of Mendacity
    By JOHN WALSH
    All governments lie as I. F. Stone famously observed, but some governments lie more than others. And the neocon Bush regime serves up whoppers as standard fare every day. Why this propensity to lie? There are many reasons, but it is not widely appreciated that the neocons believe in lying on principle. It is the “noble” thing for the elite to do, for the “vulgar” masses, the “herd” will become ungovernable without such lies. This is the idea of the “noble lie” practiced with such success and boldness by Scooter Libby and his co-conspirators and concocted by the political “philosopher” Leo Strauss whose teachings lie at the core of the neoconservative outlook and agenda, so much so that they are sometimes called “Leocons.”
  78. David Smith Says:
    In listening to what promises came out of the closed door meeting, I have my doubts as to what can be accomplished in the 2 week period considering that this period of time is also near the time of the Congressional Recess for Thanksgiving and the rest of the year-end holidays. Pat Roberts needed a little prodding to get the ball rolling as it seemed to be “out of gas” — we seem to be in a “gas crunch” these days.
  79. Think Progress » Senate Intelligence Committee Report Suggests Panel Is Being Stonewalled Says:
    […] This assessment differs greatly from the one offered by Sen. Pat Roberts on November 1st: “It isn’t like it’s been delayed. As a matter of fact, it’s been ongoing. As a matter of fact, we have been doing our work on Phase 2.” In reality, as the letter makes clear at various points, the work of the committee has been stonewalled by an unwillingness on the part conservatives to investigate the administration. The Senators report that the investigation has been unable to proceed due to the following issues: (1) Chairman Roberts is unwilling to investigate the “Cabal” inside the Pentagon’s Office of Special Plans because he is deferring to the administration to investigate itself. […]
  80. JABbering Stooge :: Overthrowing the rotten-apple cart :: June :: 2006 Says:
    […] Needless to say, the Republicans were not happy that the Democrats dared to do something other than shut up and meekly take their daily @$$-reaming. Senate Intelligence Committee chairman Pat Roberts (R-KS) spent his face time lying about the progress (or lack thereof) of the report. […]
  81. Henry Says:
    Democrats were pressing that committee to produce a report on whether the Bush administration misused intelligence on Iraq’s weapons to justify the March 2003 invasion. No weapons of mass destruction were found.
