David Broder

David Broder

makes an important point: the right wing’s torpedoing of Harriet Miers also had the effect of discrediting their justification for the “nuclear option,” that every judicial nominee deserves an up-or-down vote. (Via DKos)

I, for one, am shocked – SHOCKED – that Republicans only believe something when it suits their interests.

  2. Pete Bogs says:

indeed, and Dems should be making more of this, too… as should the WH gaggle… Scotty can’t use his “ongoing investigation” dodge if asked why the
u-o-d vote isn’t so important to them this time around…

  3. The Northeast Dilemma says:

ONLY IF WE DON’T HAVE THE VOTES. Um, and we do….

  4. Average TV Viewer says:

  5. Average TV Viewer says:

“Alito is against race based preferences like affirmative action – like most of America is. That is a good thing.”

“Bush can appoint Condi to VP and try to “heal” the country. The first female and black VP – major achievement”

“he will pack the Court with judges that think like me!”

Just like you had the votes to overhaul social security?

Face it, in the time since the election, the administration hasn’t accomplished much.

The president’s political capital is in the Red, big time and the Alito nomination is an attempt to earn some more of it after the Miers fiasco.

  7. The Northeast Dilemma says:

#5 – the President’s agenda is dead for now except for the Supreme Court. He has to fill this vacancy and he will have the votes. This about power – Democrats do not have it, Republicans do. The American people already decided who they wanted making these decisions. Any attempt to smear Alito will be met with a force like you haven’t seen since the Swift Boats.

Conservatives are not f-in around with you communists anymore. If you try to filibuster, we will CRUSH you.

  8. Average TV Viewer says:

You’re an enormous contributer to the left, NED!
Whatcha gonna say next?! No primary indictment is a good thing?! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!! “The Libby indictment was good for us because it was not an indictment indictment indictment indicment indictment
    indictment indictment indicment indictment
    indictment indictment indicment indictment
    indictment indictment indicment indictment
    indictment indictment indicment indictment….”

  9. Adam says:

Predictable winger reply to be prepared for:

“We didn’t torpedo her, she withdrew. It’s Miers herself who wasn’t up for being voted on, right-wingers themselves had nothing to do with it and would have been happy had she gone up for an up-or-down vote.”

  10. Adam says:

    NED you say:

“the President’s agenda is dead for now except for the Supreme Court. He has to fill this vacancy and he will have the votes. This about power – Democrats do not have it, Republicans do.”

Um … if Republicans have the power, why is the Presidents’s agenda dead?

  11. Jay says:

The Republicans are VERY vulnerable right now and Bush is practically turning out the lights at 1600 Pennsylvaina Ave.. Alito is certainly no lock. I hope the “constitutional” option (as the GOP nitwits re-packaged the “nuclear option” after Frank Luntz said “nuclear” may be a bit too extreme….sheesh, ya think) is invoked, in fact I can’t wait for it and judging by the Deocrats show of balls yesterday, they can’t wait for it either. Time to fight….

  12. The Northeast Dilemma says:

#10 – because it seems he has to re-fight the reasons for war with the anti-American left.

The Supreme is a yes or no question. He will the get the 50 yes and as an added bonus, Dick Cheney will break the tie just to drive you fanatics crazy.

BTW – didn’t Fitz say the investigation was not about the war? Just checking…

  13. The Northeast Dilemma says:

#11 – puh-leeze. Shut the govt down and see how the American people like that come a year from now. The radical left-wing officially owns Senate Democrats and the GOP thanks you for your help.

  14. Jparker says:

    From Wikipedia:

    Origin

Chickenhawk is a compound of “chicken” as in “coward” and “hawk” as in “pro-war,” thus a chickenhawk is someone who is in favor of a war as long as someone else does the fighting and dying.

  15. Jay says:

The truth is the most lethal weapon of all. Bushie and the boys better concentrate on keeping themselves out of the Hague….clearly they have bigger battles to fight. Frist and Delay aren’t exactly dedicating their political efforts on pushing the GOP agenda, to busy lawyering up.

Are we in the process of getting our democracy back? It’s a possibility.

  16. Andrew G. says:

“If you try to filibuster, we will CRUSH you.”

I would hope that the actions of the Republican leadership will be to do what is best for the Senate, and that means upholding the right of each senator to be recognized and the right of senators to engage in unliminted debate.

If Susan Collins, Snowe, Chafee, Specter, DeWine & Warner vote to eviserate 200 years of senate tradition- and they will have to in order to stop a filibuster- they will be crushed at the ballot box.

  17. The Northeast Dilemma says:

#15 – The charges against Delay will be dropped now that the partisan judge has been removed. AND when Rove’s indictment never shows up, the left will be exposed as the lying smear merchants they are.

  18. Andrew G. says:

    #16 “eviscerate,” Sorry.

  19. Jay says:

Dilemma, help me out with some honest questions.

What are the 2 or 3 biggest issues for you regarding the Supreme Court?

Do you believe that institutions run by men should be making decisions about women’s bodies? If yes, why?

  20. The Northeast Dilemma says:

#16 – you wish. Ask FORMER Democrat Leader Tom Daschle how obstructing judges goes over in red states. This is a winner for the GOP and I dare red state liberals to defy Bush on this – we’ll beat them on Election Day.

  21. Jay says:

    #17,

All I know is, Tom Delay was forced to resign as House majority leader and it’s highly unlikely that he ever retains that position. It was a crippling blow to the GOP’s legislative agenda. Everyone is more moderate than Delay, so when the power vaccuum is filled, we are left with a less extreme House. A net gain for the left.

  22. Andrew G. says:

    #20

I did not know that Rhode Island and Maine were Red States, and BTW, Ohio is slipping fast.

  23. Punchy says:

    NED–

wow, you ARE the dumba$$. Guess what? A JUDGE did not indict Tom Delay. He’ll be cleared because of a new judge? As if the former judge had already charged him? Uh..that was a grand jury of his PEERS that indicted him.

WOW, you really are quite the clueless one. And the loudest, it appears. It’s what all 5 year-olds understand–when wrong, just shout louder. Repeat.

  24. Andrew G. says:

    #17

How will a non-partisan judge “drop” the charges?

A Grand Jury charged delay, not judge Perkins.

There is no legal basis for a Summary Judgment in this case, the facts are in dispute.

  25. The Northeast Dilemma says:

Jay and other liberal smear merchants – the charges against DeLay are political and his undoing will slowly be UNDONE. Liberals have now resorted to the Courts (as usual) to get what the people won’t give them at the polls.

  26. Andrew G. says:

“Liberals have now resorted to the Courts (as usual) to get what the people won’t give them at the polls.”

You mean, like, the RULE OF LAW?

  27. Jay says:

Joe Sixpack is the man! I mean, he would be if he wasn’t such a loyal conservative.

    Joe, you make me laugh.

  28. Jay says:

To a political liar, the truth always sounds like a smear. Don’t look now Dilemma, but you sound a lot like Senator Frist did yesterday after he got spanked by Reid and his boys. Chin up buckeroo.

  29. kindness says:

I’m so much happier since I stopped reading ned & the other chickenhawks. I mean, why bother? They don’t even represent republicans. They only seem to represent their own fragile/bloated egos. Sorry, I don’t have time for that crap. What tools.

I sure hope this one get’s filibustered. Cause, yea, 45 votes is enough for a filibuster. Plus, it’s exactly what the Democratic party needs to show that they can indeed govern as the american people want to be governed, unlike bushco which is daily spinning out of control.

  30. tomaig says:

“Do you believe that institutions run by men should be making decisions about women’s bodies? If yes, why?

Possibly the most sophomoric and nonsensical questions ever.

“Institutions run by men…” Do you mean, like, most Doctors’ offices? Or maybe both the Senate and the House? How about the legislatures of the 50 states….bet you’d find that most (all) of these are “run by men”…Are you saying that ALL of these oh-so-patriarchal institutions ahould be forbidden from making laws or doing ANYTHING that involves, “…making decisions about women’s bodies.”?

  31. Pete Bogs says:

Fitz did say the investigation was not about the war – he was given a limited scope for his investigation, and like the by-the-book guy that he is, followed his mandate…

Fitzy also said the notion that anything he did was politically motivated is absurd…

  32. RunningDogLackey says:

NED is right! You could see “WE WILL CRUSH YOU!” written all over Frist’s sobbing face…and it practically radiated from Trent Lott when he admitted that Rove should probably resign.

You can almost smell the cordite as the Thugs prepare to steamroll the Dems by calling “Foul!” and “Stop that!” and racing for the exits to abandon a toxic, crippled President the people have rejected.

KNEEL BEFORE NED! RESISTANCE IS FUTILE! RAISE THE REPUBLICAN BATTLE-CRY: “VICTORY THROUGH SUICIDE!”

  33. thot's says:

yes David Broder has a very good point ,but to muddy the water ,what if Miers was a red herring a probe to see how the right wing base would react? My reson is this with Miers bush consulted with the Senate but he sidewipe the Senate with Alito the question I have was she a probe or was the W.H. so rattle by the Scooter indictment that they chose over the weekend to name him on Monday Morning? Also bush had met with him early in June or July I think unsure at the moment and he was on the short list but bush came out to say that Harriet Miers was the best he could find?

Now we’re hearing that alito is the best? All this flipping and flopping gives me pause to think? I would hope someone could go behind the smoke and clear it up… Just my thot’s

  34. Andrew G. says:

#16 – you wish. Ask FORMER Democrat Leader Tom Daschle how obstructing judges goes over in red states.

Yeah, Thune won 50.2% of the vote in a state that went for Bush with 60%.

You over-estimate the force of your argument.

2006 is the prelude to 08.

    2008:

Republicans Loose Ohio (20 electoral votes); Florida (27); Nevada and NM (10); and I’ll even throw Colorado, Missouri and Arkansas in play (26 votes).

That’s 77? EV’s for the Democratic Nominee not counting a continued slide in Virginia and the potential to turn N. Carolina and Tn.

  35. Jay says:

    tomaig #31,

The point is, it’s none of your fu*&ing business what a woman does with her body. Nor is it Rick Santorum’s, Antonin Scalia’s, the presidunce, Dobson, or Robertson, or the governments in general. It’s her CHOICE, so if she opposes abortion she should be extremely careful (as should her partner) and in the unfortunate event that she winds up with an unwanted pregnancy, she has a decision to make. Not you!

  36. calguy says:

Broder is slow in noting this, but it is a positive sign that Mr. Washington Establishment should weigh in on this issue. Good. More splintering of the Republican ship.

    Comment by The Northeast Dilemma

Yeah! Just like we did in… Viet Nam?

  38. Adam says:

#12 – I asked: “if Republicans have the power, why is the Presidents’s agenda dead?”

You answered: “because it seems he has to re-fight the reasons for war with the anti-American left.”

That’s not an answer. If Republicans have the power, why does the President need to re-fight anything with anyone? And I’m being very generous here in not arguing with your characterization of events as “re-fight[ing] the reasons for war” with patriotic Americans who genuinely care about our brave sons and daughters who have been sent to Iraq.

  39. Adam says:

#30 – kindness, I wholeheartedly agree. I think I’m going to jump on your bandwagon and just skip their comments in the future.

  40. TonyC says:

You mean like Bush did in 2000 when he couldn’t win the election legally?

  41. Spudge_Boy says:

    NeD,

“Any attempt to smear Alito will be met with a force like you haven’t seen since the Swift Boats.”

Oh man, I can always count on you to make me laugh. The Swift Boats were a force? Heh, funny. They were liars, but you don’t seem to mind that since the Bush administartion lies all the time.

  42. Ryan Neat says:

If activist judges who strick down congressional lways is the true complaint of Republicans, then they should appoint liberals. Republicans are always hypocrites, no matter the topic. Up is always down for these psychotic freaks.

We found that justices vary widely in their inclination to strike down Congressional laws.

    Thomas 65.63 %
    Kennedy 64.06 %
    Scalia 56.25 %
    Rehnquist 46.88 %
    O’Connor 46.77 %
    Souter 42.19 %
    Stevens 39.34 %
    Ginsburg 39.06 %
    Breyer 28.13 %
