Barnes: CIA Leak “Pretty Minor Scandal,” “Merely a Perjury Charge,” Only “Elites” Care

Weekly Standard contributors Bill Kristol and Fred Barnes have been among the most passionate White House water carriers in recent weeks. Barnes gave an especially hacktacular performance this morning, saying of the leak scandal, “most people don’t care about it, nor should they.”

    Watch in Quicktime

Most Americans don’t share Barnes’ perspective. A recent ABC News poll found that 70 percent of Americans considered the charges against Libby to be serious, 60 percent believe Karl Rove should resign, and a majority of Americans believe the Libby indictment “indicates broader problems with ethical wrongdoing in the Bush Administration.”

    Transcript below:

JON SCOTT: Fred, I guess I don’t get the sense that Americans, you know, across this great country are outraged about the Valerie Plame incident. They have some vague sense that something is amiss at the White House. But is it in the way this thing has been handled by the White House that has caused such problems, or is it in the way that Democrats have capitalized on the opportunity?

FRED BARNES: Well, Democrats have tried to capitalize on it. But Jon, I think you’re exactly right. There are things that happen in Washington the public really focuses on — hey hear, they’re aware of it, they pay attention to it — and then there are most things that happen in Washington involving government and they’re just background noise. And this is a pretty minor scandal, I believe, when it involves the chief of staff of the vice president, and merely a perjury charge and false statements, and no underlying crime has been cited by the special prosecutor, so no one was charged with leaking classified information. So I think this is a scandal that elites across America and people who are really interested in politics and Washington are aware of, but most people don’t care about it, nor should they.

Well now, they can afford to be. They aren’t up for re-election in leass than a year.

    2. Gary Kleppe says:

Because deceiving everybody in order to illegally invade and occupy a country, ending up getting two thousand Americans and lack of God knows how many Iraqis slaughtered, isn’t nearly as serious a crime as, oh, say, a blowjob.

“Brown Eye” Barnes web address, please. He needs to be showered with affection.

    4. Robert says:

      More like Koolaid Carriers.

BTW – I see Barnes has a book about Bush coming out 1/17/2006 “Rebel in Chief : Inside the Bold and Controversial Presidency of George W. Bush” :puke:

    5. RunningDogLackey says:

Sure, THAT one was minor. But Hastert and Frist are foaming at the mouth to find out who leaked the “black site” prison stories to the Washington Post.

Blowing our WMD monitoring capabilities is just a college prank. But woe to the bastards who told the world we’re operating a worldwide Torture Gulag!

Glad we have our priorities straight.

I don’t think Fred “Beetle Bailey” Barnes has an exact e-mail address – you can try editor@weeklystandard.com

    7. AvengingAngel says:

Only days after a bludgeoning behind closed doors in the Senate, Republican Senator Pat Roberts is insisting that there is no evidence of “political manipulation or pressure” in the use of pre-war intelligence.

Unfortunately for Roberts, a growing mountain of evidence suggests otherwise…

      “Roberts’ Iraq Stonewall Crumbles.”

    8. AvengingAngel says:

Patrick Fitzgerald, of course, is right. Establishing the truth about the path to war in Iraq is not his job, but that of Congress or the White House. Sadly, when it comes to finding definitive answers regarding the Bush administration’s uses of pre-war intelligence, neither Republican-controlled institution seems too concerned about the truth…

Excuse me Fred, my elite ass sees this as a major scandal. Note how they isolate the average voters as not really concerned. Why wont they answer the question if it’s not such a big deal, mainly, THEN WHY IS SCOOTER LEEKY BEING CHARGED WITH LYING TO A GRAND JURY? Aren’t these the guys who’d love to get the exclusionary rule thrown out. Remember Iran Contra, if Cap Weinberger didn’t do anything wrong why was he pardoned?

    11. Francis says:

We conservatives are tough on crime!,except when the crime is our own. Torture, murder, rape, fraud, treason, thievery, perjury etc.. Aren’t our jails filled to overflowing with the less fortunate perpetrators of the same crimes?

Right, its a minor scandal… all that lying and perjury just lead us into a very un-importnant war and the un-important deaths of thousands of people… Nothing really…

HERE IS THE LAST PARAGRAPH: “The lesson of Iran/contra is that if our system of government is to function properly, the branches of government must deal with one another honestly and cooperatively. When dispute arises between Executive and Legislative branches, as they surely will, the laws that emerge from disputes must be obeyed. When a President, even with good motive and intent, chooses to skirt the laws or to circumvent them, it is incumbent upon his subordinates to resist, not join in. THEIR OATH AND FEALTY ARE TO THE CONSTITUTION AND THE RULE OF LAW, NOT TO THE MAN WHO TEMPORARILY OCCUPYING THE OVAL OFFICE. Congress has the duty and the power under our system of checks and balances to ensure that the President and his Cabinet officers are faithful to their oaths. End. Thanks for reading this TFM

Back in July, Perrspectives took a look at the Top 10 GOP sound bites. What a difference a hurricane and two indictments make.

Catapulting to #1 in the charts after the Scooter Libby indictment is Texas Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison’s smash hit, “No Underlying Crime (Perjury Technicality).” “Ongoing Investigation”, the previous chart-topper from Scott McClellan and George W. Bush, dropped to #2. Moving to #5 is “Criminalization of Politics”, as performed by Tom Delay, Ken Mehlman, Bill Kristol and Robert Novak.

      Here’s the complete Top 10 GOP Post-Indictment Sound Bites…

      Casualty rate increasing in Iraq

In October, the daily KIA rate of US forces in Iraq was 3.19. In November, it is up to 3.5 per day. That’s seven killed every two days. In September, it was a “good” 1.74 per day. And that’s just US mostly US troops.

      IMPEACH BUSH.

    19. dave says:

Someone should research these guys comments and opinions about Bill’s illicit blow job while he was in the White House. I am sure it will be enlightening.

I think on the rictor scale of scandal a CIA leak ranks much higher than an extramarital affair.

    20. Ringo says:

I want to know what Bush has on these guys. What’s he blackmailing them with? Photos of them in compromising positions with the White House gay whore Jeff Gannon? They have the nerve to say, oh, it’s nothing. Let this scenario play out against a Democrat president, and they’d be frothing at the mouth screaming for an impeachment.

    21. The Fly-man says:

The obvious answer to avoid our Politicians having to vote on any war, especially one where the facts were twisted to basically coerse a supporting vote, IS TO BRING BACK THE DRAFT. Here is a great article by Charles Rangle (D,NY)
      http://www.cnn.com/2003/ALLPOLITICS/01/07/rangel.draft/
Here is a real peace agenda item for the Democratic Party.

    22. Marie says:

I think all the jokesters are right — unless Bush gets a BJ in the White House, there is no “serious” matter of concern.

    23. stitch says:

#21 – the problem is that they refuse to use the same “offense” scale for the Democrats and Republicans. The Democrat scale goes from making personal phone calls on government phones (lowest offense) to getting a blow job while in office (highest offense – punishable by impeachment). The Republican scale includes only one offense – nominating a Supreme Court justice who may or may not vote against abortion. Anything other than that is merely a Democratic political opportunity.

    24. Marie says:

As #6 RDL, so correctly point out — there is HUGE outrage (Frist and Hastert in charge) on the Hill to find out how the story of the USA “black” prisons across Europe managed to get into the Wash. Post and subsequently, the talk shows on Sunday.
So, when our government exposes a CIA agent, when our President began an unjust and unwarranted war based on false information and forged documents, then lied to the public about it, those are all just background noise by the nasty liberals, and you just don’t bother your little head about it.
But when another of our shameful scandals surfaces, like black prisons, or illegal use of weaponry in Iraq and Afghanistan, or anti-Geneva Convention practices at detention centers, the righteous Republicans demand an investigation to see who leaked, who lied, and who will be punished.

    25. Kevo says:

Barnes and Kristol do not care for the truth (period). Apologists and charlatans are the only ones to support this corrupt Administration. Mr. Barnes and Mr. Kristol, until you can help the American people discover the lies that led us to this miserable time and space, good day! I said good day! -Kevo

#30 – I was being sarcastic Spudge. My point was that there seems to be no offense (other than Harriet Myers) for which the Republicans seem to want to hold this administration accountable. My reference to Democratic “political opportunity” came straight from the Jon Scott’s quote above. I agree and it is unfathomable to me that the same Republicans who wanted Clinton hanged for lying are now shamelessly covering up for the war that this white house manipulated us into.

    34. Mr. Evil says:

Bill Kristol and Fred Barnes are just trying to sweep all of the crimes of this administration under the rug where many Americans like them to be. People in general hate to think and especially hate to be wrong!

The only thing Kristol and Barnes care about is the PNAC agenda continuing forward and damn all else. They don’t care what the American People think, do or say. They certainly don’t care about our well being or our future.

You should realize by now that whatever you’ve been doing hasn’t been working at all for you guys. Oh, don’t get me wrong, I like the way things are now, I just would like to see a list of some of your hairbrained ideas and how you would implement them.

I for one would welcome a CIA/WaPo leak investigation for all the crap it would reveal about our current administration… though Bush lost credibility with many people long ago (if he ever had it at all), having proof that we are operating secret prisons kind of dimishes Bush’s (fallback) argument that we removed Saddam because he was doing bad, illegal things… oh, and that Democratic senator could rescind his apology for using the word “gulag” in a speech… word is, Soviet-era prisons in Poland and Romania are being used!

      (2) the glass frames are pressing too tightly against your temples, causing a constriction of blood flow to the brain, which is obviously muddying your cognitive processes.

Repaeal portions of the Patriot Act, specifically the provision regarding Library record searches by the FBI. Iraq, commission the Chineese army to surround the whole country and monitor all people coming and going untill the new govt. kicks in and then pay them in oil.
Enforce the immigration laws against employers, not just Wall-Mart, for hiring Illegal Immigrants, IE: The construction Business. Create an Interest Income tax break, say all tax free if 5% was donated to the Dept. of Education. Next nationalize all first responders to any high level federal emergency just like the National Guard, but mainly Fire/ Rescue and Health care workers. Create a national program with thousands of retirees as a test program for using a protected amount of Social Security supplements in investments. That way we would know what works and what didn’t. All of this would cost less than what we’ve spent in Iraq. Doubt too many body bags to go with it. I got your whining right here. I’m so gald you align yourself with the GOP. You Mean the GOP , the party of SMALLER GOVT, you mean the PARTY OF STATES RIGHTS, you mean the PARTY OF INDIVIDUAL FREEDOMS, you mean the PARTY OF THE RULE OF LAW. Bahaha, newsmax. Randy might as well refer to the national enquirer! The chances of getting a true story are greater from the enquirer tabloid than that right wing virtual toilet paper!

Bahahaha, Randy now we all know you’re not only a fool, but the most easily duped redneck moron in the crew! Bahahaha

For those that don’t know newsmax, it’s funded by the Scaife Nazi dollars that brought you paula jones and every clinton and swiftboat smear around.

Scaife, the third-largest shareholder in NewsMax Media Inc., has been called the “Funding Father of the Right” by a Washington Post article on May 2, 1999: “The Washington Post found that “Scaife and his family’s charitable entities have given at least $340 million to conservative causes and institutions — about $620 million in current dollars, adjusted for inflation … by concentrating his giving on a specific ideological objective for nearly 40 years, and making most of his grants with no strings attached, Scaife’s philanthropy has had a disproportionate impact on the rise of the right, perhaps the biggest story in American politics in the last quarter of the 20th century.”

    79. Ryan Neat says:

      boudicca,

You have a functional brain, to a republican that automatically qualifies you as ‘elite’.

    80. Jay says:

      #44 Dilemma,

Good that the R’s are looking for answers on the gulag leak. The more time they spend shining light on the fact that we’re torturing people, the better the chance that the American people will wake up and realize what’s being done in their name. So investigate away and make sure it gets lots and lots of press coverage.

Man that Frist is one dumb bastard.

    81. Jeremy says:

I agree #78. If there is corruption in any parts of the Democratic party, then I would want a full investigation. Any corruption is not good for those who represent the public.

NED – “The GOP needs to destroy the left once and for all. You have been begging for it for years now.”

Destroy?? Then that would leave no political opposition, are you asking for a one party system? A one party system in cahoots with the corporations. That sounds like Fascism to me. Wow, Ryan, your 100% correct when you label these chickenhawks as Fascists, they even admit it in their own words!:O

      That’s extremely disturbing.

    82. Red says:

Barnes is just exposing the high and mighty leftist posers as being “out there” and meaningless to the avg. American. Your kind can’t be more than 10% of the population.
You moonbats are like the annoying crows that dive bomb and pick at the tail feathers of the majestic birds of prey who are at the top of the food chain.

    83. Mary Poppin says:

I guess there is a double standard. Clinton was impeached for lying but it’s ok for the Republican to lie.

    84. progressive and proud says:

Blah, blah, blah NeD. Enough already. We all know you want to murder rape rob and pillage. Sorry, dude, you are in the wrong country and wrong era. You are some kind of violent weirdo though. Seek help.

    85. Ryan Neat says:

      Jeremy,

They are fascist. Unlike Frist and the republican retards, I use language precisely.

      Fascism=Corporatism=Republicanism=Nazism

Republicans don’t believe in an opposition movement because they are deluded by the preconception, opinion and blind zealot faith that they are right. In otherwords they’re psychotic fascists.

Yes, I know there are a few reasonable people that have been blinded by republican promises that don’t always represent this – Joe Wilson is a republican that fit this mold – but as we’ve seen, the reasonable people have largely abandoned the republicans. Only the Nazis are left.

    86. Joe Sixpack says:

Hey, NED. Just following your posts here. I appreciate your help here trying to help me with the conservative spin on stuff, but lets face it: we are flat getting our asses handed to us. I did like that crack in #74 calling Jeremy a chickenhawk, but he said it first in #62, making your take pretty lame.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but your arguement is a little thin, honey. That remark calling Joe Wilson a criminal was out of line. Was that the same Joe Wilson who was a highly respected diplomat and served as Pres. George H. W. Bush’s ambassador to Gabon? The one who also donated a $1,000 to junior’s campaign in 2000? You know what junior’s father said about him? That he was “truly inspiring” and “courageous” following his actions in Iraq that led to the First Gulf War. I mean, you aren’t calling George the First a liar, are you?

Speaking of liars, NED, what’s your take on that blowhard Fred Barnes? I mean, is his tired shit flakey or what?

    87. Jay says:

Apparently Trent Lott has revealed that the leak to WaPo regarding the gulag situation was from a GOP Senator.

Dilemma, what do you think about the GOP “fighting back” hard now? Huh?

Like I said, Frist is one dumbfu*k. Not to mention the fact that Trent Lott is absolutely killing him. So nice to see Republicans eating their own.

    88. progressive and proud says:

NeD and the others eat their own young. Like I said on another thread, the trolls here have Stockholm Syndrome and are akin to Patty Hurst. It is painful to see the denial, but starting to be entertaining to watch them fallout.

    89. progressive and proud says:

      Ironic post, Jay.

    90. Granite State Destroyer says:

Frist has to be THE most inept leader the Republican has ever seen. Sheerly and utterly incompetant, petulant and the leader of the pack lemmings.

Remember the Republicans wanting a “permanant Republican majority”. Was that in the same way that the Third Riech would reign for “1000 years”.?

      -GSD

The friendly fascism is getting a little more mean these days.

    91. Ryan Neat says:

      Jay,

      DOOOHHHH! That’s very funny!

Just goes to show you republican hypocrisy. NED, do you still believe we should investigate? Maybe we should remove the republican senator – yet another seat available for democrats! I’m for it!

    92. Jay says:

Well Dilemma, are you still behind the investigation of the leak to WaPo or not? I would LOVE to know where you stand on this story since you were so hopped up about it at 1:40 this afternoon. Ouch! Things change so fast when you throw your support behind liars. Don’t hurt yourself spinning in the other direction now…K.

    93. Ryan Neat says:

Senator Trent Lott (R-MS) told CNN’s Ed Henry Tuesday afternoon that he believed it was a Republican senator who gave information about secret CIA jails abroad to the Washington Pos.

Lott said that much of the information contained in the Post report — which stated that the U.S. was holding terrorist suspects in secret CIA jails overseas — was discussed at a meeting of Republican senators last Tuesday.

      48% and rising, actually.

You moonbats are like the annoying crows that dive bomb and pick at the tail feathers of the majestic birds of prey who are at the top of the food chain.

Okay, those of us who live among birds of prey know they don’t get bit by crows. If your bird is getting bit by crows, it ain’t at the top of the food chain. If your bird allows itself to be dive-bombed by a crow, it ain’t majestic.

Also, birds need tailfeathers. Without them, they auger in, like the Republican party is doing now.

    95. Chris says:

Of course it was a republican leaking to the WP, the dems would never be privvy to that info…has the administration gotten too evil for its own good…i hope this is only the beginning of rep pols worried about their seats turning on the administrition…now we just have to remember next November to thank them for the info and NOT let them back in

    97. cyncial ex-hippie says:

We’re only 10%? We were 48% a year ago. I guess Bush has been working hard and earned the trust of a great many of us since then.

I’m calling the local Republican party to see if they accept liberals into their organization. Like NED said, don’t you want to be on the winning side ;-)

    98. progressive and proud says:

NeD once again scurries off with his tail between his legs. He a post and run kind of guy. Just like a republican, never in it for the long haul and has answers.

    99. Elvis says:

      NED,

Do you know what the term “chicken hawk” is used to describe?

Once again, you are confusing “Political Dissent” and being “anti-American.” Being anti-government or having your own perspective on how you think the country should function, no matter how far it strays from popular view or the current system, is not “anti-American.” It’s political freedom. Free-thinking. Objective reason. If you want a political system that is based on the wants and needs of the people, for the people and by the people, then you have to accept political differences, embrace them and learn from them.

Unfortunately, the leaders today apparently have you confused to the point where you think only having two parties and they must be polar opposites out to kill each other, is the only way. This is not the way things should be.

You two-faced, crooked, corrupt, liberal dorks all talk like sissy girly men. Why don’t you do something productive instead of whining to each other about everything. How about laying out a coherent detailed plan for the way you believe everything should work. Then list your priorities and promote them. You should realize by now that whatever you’ve been doing hasn’t been working at all for you guys. Oh, don’t get me wrong, I like the way things are now, I just would like to see a list of some of your hairbrained ideas and how you would implement them.

Things were much better the way they were going before. There never were any problems or crises. All manufactured by right wing think tank brainwash. And Bush lost the popular and electoral vote in 2000. And it’s starting to look like he would have lost it in 2004, except for the “funny business” in Ohio and Flotida again. And before you open your mouth, that’s all going to come out, like every other filthy thing you corrupt, lying pieces of shit have done. Eat your own American Shit Pie and Die, bitch!

      So NED,

you really are for an imbalance of power.

Also, for many years government has relied upon most people not voting or caring about politics. The blogging and internet have helped to curb this. That’s why Forbes magazine recently had a story “Attack of the Blogs” portraying blogs to be evil.

NED has not once responded to any of my comments questions. So please don’t respond NED.

One hot, steaming helping of chickenhawk pie coming right up. There’s always plenty of chickenhawk pie to go around. Chickenhawks are such ugly pussies, they never die of anything but obesity, loneliness, and old age.

    108. For Truth says:

The only reason why the truth has been making it’s way to the American People is due to the information age, internet, e-mail, digital cameras, phone cameras, satellite phones with video. Folks like NED are resisting the information age, it’s a form of evolution.

When you cheat, you don’t win, but you do commit a crime. Gore won the 2000 election by a half million votes, and he also won florida, the supreme court cheated for bush. In 2004 Diebold did the heavy lifting. So what you’re saying is we should watch out because you’ll cheat again. You’re fascists, we know you will cheat again, but eventually thieves always die by their own sword.

As for your other ridiculous claims – bahaha, whatever drugs your on must have come from limbaugh’s stash!

Ya know, come to think of it, Hillary might have a slim chance. She does have a little more backbone than most of you guys. 124. Ryan Neat says:

      AmericanPieHole,

Is that why you picked a former gay man draft dodger over an actual war hero who not only fought for his country, but fought to bring the other soldiers home? You wouldn’t know what a spine was if it was shoved up your ass.

You really should look up the term ‘anxious masculinity’, it tends to describe fearful and emasculated men like you quite well…

    125. Andrew says:

Uh, NED, did you see where it was probably a GOP senate staffer that leaked that? It was brought up in a meeting with Dick “Torture Boy” Cheney and other GOPers so I don’t see how Harry Reid could be implicated in this. Sure, go after the leaker. Just be prepared to find somebody with an elephant bumper sticker, not a donkey.

    126. Innocent Bystander says:

I’ll bet NED and his alter-posting personalities would really enjoy living their Red dream….they’d have been right at home in the one party state of Communist China, mindlessly spouting the Chairman’s talking points from memory. 130. Marie says:

#77, FM, I like your ideas. I too have talked about reviving the CCC and the WPA as well for infrastructure repairs. It’s an idea that will never fly with this administration because it is too logical — government paying unemployed people to work on improving the country. It’s too Democratic. It will cost too much money.
Yet, when I see the amounts of money the Republicans have spent, with debt going out far into the future, I don’t think that argument will stand.
We all have ideas on how to improve infrastructure, reduce unemployment, save Soc. Sec., but our plans do not include corporate welfare; the rich will have to pay their share – and the more they have benefitted from this land, the more in taxes they should pay — it is only moral and right — but they will never see it that way; too many of them are too selfish. They only go to church on Sundays, the rest of the week they listen to the devil.
