Sen. Dick Durbin on the Senate floor this afternoon:
I don’t understand this. While the Department of Justice is actively investigating this man for wrongdoing that could have endangered American troops and American lives, the Department of State and the Department of the Treasury are hosting him like some sort of dignitary. So don’t be surprised if you watch the Chalabi motorcade speed up when they pass the Department of Justice. I guess they’re concerned whether an FBI agent will come out and pursue this so-called active investigation.
It is very difficult to track how this man, who gave us such misleading information before the invasion of Iraq, now under active investigation for endangering American troops is now under active investigation for endangering American troops is now the toast of the town at the Department of Treasury and the Department of State
More information on Mr. Chalabi here.
UPDATE: More from Rep. George Miller.
UPDATE 2: Arianna has the full text of Durbin’s remarks.
Chalabi should be put in cuffs and handed over to Jordan.
November 8th, 2005 at 3:19 pmDOJ should “interrogate” him, outside of any moral limits, while he is town…they might not get this chance again!
November 8th, 2005 at 3:20 pmChalabi is so much like Bush and members of Bush’s administration: they can operate with impunity – they are “above the law.” Why anyone in Washington would give him the time of day is astonishing – oh wait – silly me – they are so far above the law, they can’t possibly see one of their friends as subject to the law.
November 8th, 2005 at 3:25 pmThis reminds me of an old adage…
Fool me once shame on you…fool me twice, shame, fool you twice, me on shame…I won’t get fooled again!
November 8th, 2005 at 3:35 pmI say that the DOJ should scoop up Chalabi, ferret him away to Uzbekistan, and torture him, but not so much that his vital organs fail or he dies.
November 8th, 2005 at 3:35 pmBushcorp has promised this man that he will ultimately be in charge in Iraq. This was promised in exchange for the “intelligence” that could pass as legitimate to bring our country to war. 911 was the perfect catalyst to create the perfect atmosphere of fear so we could be duped into war with a country that WAS NO THREAT TO US.
I can see why the trolls are in denial, though. I would be ashamed and embarrassed if I had been pro-war. It would be a lot on my shoulders if I had been for a war that has cost America so many lives. Yes, I suppose if I had been truly used, I too may have found myself denying the obvious.
The trolls are suffering through Stockholm Syndrone right now. I liken them to Patty Hurst.
November 8th, 2005 at 3:35 pmI can’t help but wonder….
November 8th, 2005 at 3:37 pmWill the MSM pick up this story?
Will the general public get to know about this?…….
Maybe this is a “sting” operation — you know, like mailing SuperBowl tickets to fugitive felons.
Oh, wait — I forgot we can NEVER admit we screwed up by trusting this guy.
Never mind.
November 8th, 2005 at 3:37 pmAnother day under the reign of the Worst President EVER!
November 8th, 2005 at 3:40 pmThis is probably too complicated for the MSM…they like to keep it simple with vivid images to keep the sheep g(r)azing…another corrupt old white man is just too “last week”
November 8th, 2005 at 3:45 pmGood for you Durbin for speaking out about this. But now it’s time to act. I’m glad to see Democrats growing a spine in the sense that they can speak out, but now I wanna see them walk the walk.
November 8th, 2005 at 3:45 pmThe Bush administration may continue to dissapoint me but whatever they do will never surprise me. This is again some of the most disgusting actions by our government.
November 8th, 2005 at 3:47 pmIt’s proof that once you go down the wrong road you apparently can’t turn back. I guess they’re concerned he[Chalabi] can land them all in jail if they backtrack on him now.
i say subpeona the man, and find out the truth…if that is ever possible, about what he said, and the details, etc.
the democrats have taken too long to speak out about this, but in the name of justice, finally grew a pair.
we deserve the truth about this crooked guy.
November 8th, 2005 at 3:48 pmExactly, Magnum!!
November 8th, 2005 at 3:52 pmNearly everyone on all of TP’s posts have good things to say, as do some of the Dems recently, but most of us on here are not in the position to do something, imagine if we were!!!!
If this were the wild west people would be calling for a rope and sturdy tree;Enough to accomodate several ropes.
November 8th, 2005 at 3:52 pmnowar…not to mention a bucket of steaming hot tar, and a bag full of fluffy white feathers for before the reach the gallies….bringing new meaning to choking the chicken
November 8th, 2005 at 3:55 pmDon’t be surprised of Doug Feith offs Chalabi in a dark alley before he can go back to Iraq …
November 8th, 2005 at 4:07 pmAl Gore would have tied him up by his balls and forced him to listen to Barbara Streissand…

“Yes, I could get my Sleepytime Herbal Green Tea Infuser at Amazon, but until that Sharper Image dweeb or I invent a Star Trek transporter, there’s only so much you can get over the net, legally. So this strip mall around the corner has a nail salon that I go to for my pedicures (Tuesday’s special $5 off!). Today I just noticed that they also wax and shave! Who needs Tipper to shave my back hair! :) I’m freeee! Wheee! No more breakfast in bed for her! Get your own grape nuts, woman! Bwahaha!â€

November 8th, 2005 at 4:12 pmWe must always take into consideration when this administration errs that they have already accomplished their primary goal; which was to make Richard Nixon look good.
November 8th, 2005 at 4:40 pmChris,
November 8th, 2005 at 4:58 pmIf they want Chalabi to really pay the price, all they have to do when he returns to Iraq is deny him entry into the Green Zone. This Bush Cheney and co. could rest better at night knowing Chalabi sleeps with the fishes.
Good thing Tom DeLay is not after him…….
Oh ya, he only takes over federal agencies while in search of those naughty Texas Dem politicians..
Durbin rocks!!!!
November 8th, 2005 at 5:41 pmBut when Senator Durbin toasts and hosts Prince Turki Al-Faisal, Saudi Arabia’s new ambassador to Washington, then it is totally okay. Did everone forget that Prince Turki was head of Saudi Intelligence and is considered the mentor of Osama Bin Laden?
Senator Durbin is a hypocrite. Maybe Chalabi should write him a check.
November 8th, 2005 at 6:45 pm#23
WHo is this Osama Bin Laden guy you mention?
November 8th, 2005 at 7:26 pm?Both Clintons and Gore and Kerry and a bunch more said Iraq was a major threat. Obviously Saddam was and is an innocent man wrongly accuesed of mass murder, genocide and an invasion of a neighboring country. I think we should put the whole lot in chains. How about you?
November 8th, 2005 at 8:51 pmThey are all criminals, bush,cheny, rummy,condi,shelibi,bolton, etc,etc
November 8th, 2005 at 9:09 pmGive ‘um hell Durbin!
These NEOCONS have no morals, no rules, no ethics, no boundries, and they will stop at nothing to get what they want. I want them OUT of my country, now!
November 8th, 2005 at 10:22 pm#6 P&P, I believe you are right on the mark there.
November 8th, 2005 at 10:36 pmBush & Co. (Cheney in particular) owe the slimbag, traitorous Chalabi. He will get a posh seat in the new Iraqi government and Cheney’s Halliburton, and all the subsidiaries will reap the billions.
Cheney should torture him until he hemmorages information. This is the irony of this administration, but unlike the left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing, this administration does these sorts of things blatantly, with extreme arrogance. I’m happy to see the Democratic leadership finally standing up to these people!
November 8th, 2005 at 11:51 pm“Both Clintons and Gore and Kerry and a bunch more said Iraq was a major threat.I think we should put the whole lot in chains. How about you?”
Comment by I-RIGHT-I — November 8, 2005 @ 8:51 pm
*Sigh* That same fallacy again. It’s getting old –I wish the Bush apologists got a new talking point.
Fact is IT DOES NOT MATTER WHAT “both Clintons and Gore and Kerry and a bunch more” said, agreed or disagreed on. They did not order the invasion based on fabricated intelligence, made-up “facts”, and misinformation.
Bush was fixing the facts and intelligence around the policy of invading Iraq in 2002. Check the Downing Street Memos here: http://www.downingstreetmemo.com/
Members of his administration who are also members of the PNAC have been long-time advocates of “finishing the business” of removing Saddam from power. Look under “Iraq/Middle East” in the PNAC’s web site: http://www.newamericancentury.org/
Again: what “both Clintons and Gore and Kerry and a bunch more” said is absolutely irrelevant –it was Bush who ordered the invasion of Iraq on a deception. The fact that Bill Clinton, in spite of what he thought, did NOT invade Iraq goes to show you what a responsible person does when confronted with evidence that runs against their opinions and/or beliefs.
“Obviously Saddam was and is an innocent man wrongly accuesed (sic) of mass murder, genocide and an invasion of a neighboring country. ”
Well, then again I guess George Bush II and Saddam Hussein are even on this one – American troops have invaded Iraq and continue to occupy it. While there, they have incarcerated, tortured the innocent, laid siege to entire cities, cut water and other basic services to them, empty them them, and razed them to the ground. All these are war crimes.
The administration position towards Iraq, contrasts with take on Lebanon. Here are a few excerpts of a March 5, 2005 speech by Pres. Bush on the presence of Syrian troops in Lebanon:
“all foreign forces be withdrawn”
“A Syrian withdrawal of all its military and intelligence personnel would help ensure that the Lebanese elections occur as scheduled in the spring and that they will be free and fair”
“Lebanese citizens who have watched free elections in Iraq are now demanding the right to decide their own destiny, free of Syrian control and domination”
Now why would Syrians want to be free, but the would Iraqis want to be occupied? Do you think the nationality of their occupiers makes a difference to Iraqis?
November 9th, 2005 at 12:32 amI’m figuring Chalabi must have Saddam’s private picture collection….young boys, older white guys in business suits with American Flag lapel buttons, mounds of money, and piles of white powder……

Gregor to you terrorists are freedom fighters and the US is an occupational force. Most of the Iraqi’s think you’re nuts and I agree. But them I’m one of the good guys any you are an apologist for head choppers and assorted evil villains. Hell, you could be an evil villain yourself for all I know.

Who told you that? This administration? The same people that lied about WMD?
You are clueless what the Iraqi’s think. You desperately want to believe it, but the truth the typical Iraqi wants peace and he won’t see that as long as we are occupying his soil.

I-RIGHT-I, I hate to be the one to break the bad news to you, but the US IS an occupation force in Iraq.
Main Entry: oc·cu·pa·tion
Pronunciation: “ä-ky&-’pA-sh&n
Function: noun
Etymology: Middle English occupacioun, from Middle French occupation, from Latin occupation-, occupatio, from occupare
3 a : the act or process of taking possession of a place or area : SEIZURE b : the holding and control of an area by a foreign military force c : the military force occupying a country or the policies carried out by it
Iraqis would agree with me and not with you: A recent poll in Iraq revealed that 82% of respondents “strongly oppose” troops being in their country, 67% feel less secure and 72% have no confidence in the occupation forces. Also, 45% approve of attacks on foreign troops. See the article here: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2005/10/23/wirq23.xml&sSheet=/news/2005/10/23/ixworld.html

The American Negroe (sic) will never control anything until they learn to control themselves. They can agitate all they want for “better treatment†from Government agencies but that helps them not on whit when they go home loot and shoot each other. In my opinion what the American Negroe (sic) must do is wean themselves (sic) from the government teat and agitate among themselves for more personal accountability to the group.

You don’t know what you’re talking about. We have been asked to stay and for good reason. The typical Iraqi knows his goose is cooked the minute we leave and their own military isn’t capable of repelling the Sunni Ba’athists and the Iranians.
Your side wants us out because the know Iraq will fall apart when we do leave. Basically your side doesn’t care if 100,000 die just as long as America and George Bush lose. You people are pathetic and evil and if I had the power I’d throw the whole lot of you to the sharks off Club Gitmo. It’s the Christian thing to do.

A police official said it was believed that suicide bombers carried out the attacks on three hotels in the Jordanian capital late Wednesday, which killed at least 18 people and injured more than 120.
“There were three terrorist attacks on the Grand Hyatt, Radisson SAS and Days Inn hotels and it is believed that the blasts were suicide bombings,” police spokesman Maj. Bashir al-Da’aja told The Associated Press.
I blame George Bush, don’t you?
November 9th, 2005 at 3:59 pm“I blame George Bush, don’t you?”
Are you finally getting it? How many people in the ME would still be alive today if we hadn’t declared an elective and immoral war? How many more have to die before you finally DO start blaming the only person who could authorize this heinious action?
November 9th, 2005 at 6:42 pmDon’t trust IRI.
November 9th, 2005 at 6:57 pmTwo career CIA experts just spoke on TV and their reply to the question “does our presence in Iraq have anything to do with this bombing today?” was it has everything to do with it.
Bush’s folly in Iraq has cost our soldiers’ lives, Iraqi lives, and damaged us all, maybe irreparably, going into the future.
BTW – have you read the reports today and yesterday (confirmed in the Army magazine) that USA used white phosporous as a weapon in Fallujah. Reports of the USA using napalm (MK77) are also in BBC news and Italian news. Horrific injuries and deaths – the USA did not sign on to weapons agreements.
“I’m talking about the kind of evil villain that by thought word and deed disparages our country and gives our enemies aid and comfort. (The Filthy Left in America)”
Comment by I-RIGHT-I — November 9, 2005 @ 3:12 pm
Is voicing a dissenting opinion to give “aid and comfort” to the enemy? Is stating that the Bush II administration “sold” the war by misrepresenting facts, manufacturing intelligence, and distorting the truth, to disparage the country? If anything, what is being disparaged is this administration that DOES NOT represent *you* in any way. You might be a card-carrying Republican, you might have helped vote them into office –but these people are NOT Republicans, or Christians. They just claim to be.
Why would you stand by an administration that lied to you when they said that Iraq was an impending danger? Iraq had no WMDs. The NeoCons in the White House knew it (or at the very least, suspected it), and they still pushed these claims about the “mushroom cloud” over Washington. If the war on Iraq was such a just and noble cause, why lie about it? When justice is on your side, there is no need to lie and/or misrepresent the facts.
You know that Bush’s own 9/11 Commission found that there were no credible links between Hussein, and Al Qaeda –in spite of what the current administration said. This administration ordered the invasion of a country that posed no threat, and had no way of defending itself after so many years under sanctions. Is that one of the values you espouse?
You might think Iraqis are better now than under Saddam. Well, there is no difference anymore. It is now known that the US are using chemical weapons in Iraq – the same kind Saddam Hussein used on the Kurds. US military personnel have been convicted of torturing detainees in Abu Ghraib; and there are reports that they are not the exception to the rule –torture IS the rule in Iraq. Cities have been sieged, emptied, and then razed to the ground. Thousands of people have been left displaced, homeless, jobless, and with no way to feed and care for their loved ones. Does that represent you? Is that what you want to see Iraqis going through? Is that what you stand for?
November 9th, 2005 at 7:29 pmWe need this and more. You make the demands, you go on strike. You have the money and the Republican contributors either do as we want or they go broke under our purchasing strike.

It’s sheer thumbing-your-nose perversity that the neocons are greeting him as a hero after wasting our taxpayer dollars buying his ‘Curveball’ misintelligence that BushCo used to get us into a war that didn’t need to be fought.
