This morning, Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-TN) and House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert (R-IL) wrote a letter to intelligence committee chairmen about the recent leak of information to the Washington Post about secret CIA detention centers in Europe.
In the letter, Frist and Hastert claimed the leaks “could have long-term and far-reaching damaging and dangerous consequences” for the security of the United States, and warned of a “dangerous trend” of leaking “that, if not addressed swiftly and firmly, likely will worsen.”
But today, in an off-camera meeting with reporters, Sen. Trent Lott (R-MS) revealed that the leak likely came from a Senator or Senate staffer who attended a GOP-only meeting with Vice President Dick Cheney last week, where the detention centers were discussed.
CNN’s Ed Henry has the full report:

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! Trent, you make me weak in the knees!
November 8th, 2005 at 5:15 pmthese guys should really get their stories straight before going public… Dr. Frist may have spent eight years in college, but he doesn’t have too much sense…
November 8th, 2005 at 5:18 pmlet them get their stories straight in prison. Having these pigs in office is the greatest threat to our national security. Someone should hang.
November 8th, 2005 at 5:20 pmI can hear NeD crying her eyes out somewhere…
November 8th, 2005 at 5:20 pmOf course, none of them seem concerned that the U.S. has a secret and illegal (both here and in the countries that host them) set of prisons across the world. They’re only pissed off that they go caught (and Lott is still pissed that he’s no longer Majority leader).
November 8th, 2005 at 5:22 pmAll the trolls have disappeared from the last three threads, come to think of it.
November 8th, 2005 at 5:23 pmI guess they’re getting their new spin/talking points before returning.
#5 - amen to that… I already have a blog up about that hypocrisy…
http://blogdebogs.blogspot.com/ 2005/ 11/ id-classify-this-as-hypocrisy.html
November 8th, 2005 at 5:27 pmI have a pretty good idea of which gop senators it might be, say Hagel or McCain, as they are both adamantly against this whole criminal project of the cheney-cia torture State.
this shows up a major facturing line inside the republican party, not surprising really. and I am glad for it too. let them shoot themselves in the foot on this issue. and from the tone of what Frist and Hastert were saying, they would have liked to turn it into a plame type thing, against the demorats, “far reaching and damaging consequences” blah blah blah, hahahaha
November 8th, 2005 at 5:34 pmCome on NeD, IRI, all of you wackos, let’s hear from the choir. Since when do you have nothing to say? Since when are you too busy to “chat” here with us. We know you are there so speak up. I need a little troll juice, man. Don’t stand us up now.
November 8th, 2005 at 5:35 pmOK, I do believe the corrupt bunch have lost it!!!!! How about Frist preaching about ethics!!!! AR,AR,AR I think there is about 20 of them under investigation and 3or 4 indicted!!! I guess they will find out CRIME DOES NOT PAY!! HEY boys you are not above the law.
November 8th, 2005 at 5:37 pmI forgot to mention the most obvious thing about the whole Hastert/Frist take on things: they aren’t calling an investigation into the reality of overseas torture by the CIA, but into who leaked the info!
It always kills me when the reptiles come out talking about how such a thing will damage national security blah etc etc. when their actions overseas with the Iraq war, torture and mistreatment at Abu Ghraib, and now this CIA black hole prison/gulag system, have damaged the real security and “image” of the country for decades to come. doesn’t that just beat the stick.
November 8th, 2005 at 5:41 pmhah. brilliant! it’s a republican. and you know what, every american should thank him/her for bring this shameful issue to the public’s attention. too bad this was nothing but a political stunt for the republican leadership that just backfired. ;)
November 8th, 2005 at 5:48 pmSeems to me that the republicans want to get rid of some of their senators that doesn’t want to play by the GOP rules.. will see.
November 8th, 2005 at 5:49 pmGOP simply cannot be trusted with national security. Simple as that. Plame, CIA torture prisons, …
November 8th, 2005 at 5:53 pmDuh-OH!!!!
can you spell damnthisblewupinmyface Dr Frist? You mean you can diagnose (incorrectly) a brain dead individual from 40 minutes of a vhs tape but you can’t tell it’s your own people dropping dimes to the WashPost?
Maybe some republicans want to get elected next year. I’ll give them my advice, free. If they want to get elected, they should switch parties NOW
November 8th, 2005 at 5:53 pmFrist should never have messed with a guy named Trent … I just LOVE it when they knife each other.
November 8th, 2005 at 6:01 pmBradblog has a good comment on the wingnuts coordinated attack on the CIA now (i.e. operation kill the messenger). I don’t listen or read much on the dark side but apparently all the wingers are saying the Wilson/Niger trip was part of a longstanding war on the Bushies. That it was a CIA “conspiracy” to get BUSH & CO. You can see some of that seeping into the CNN report as they note that some of the reports on the “gulags” were from CIA reports or sources, in addition to the facts attributed to the GOP Senator’s meeting.
These guys are organized!
November 8th, 2005 at 6:03 pmWhat the Hell is this with Republican Senators getting this level of Security information without involving the Democratic members of the Intel committees? How long has it been that only one side has been getting the information?
November 8th, 2005 at 6:04 pmAs if I did not know….
Thank you, Sir Leaks-a-Lott.
November 8th, 2005 at 6:15 pmNED is a chickenhawk, NED is a chickenhawk! Bawk Bawk Bawk.
Run forest, runnnnnnnnnn! LOL. Too much fun.

November 8th, 2005 at 6:18 pmFrist leak probe backfires
News reports existence of secret torture prisons.
Congressional Republicans angrily demand investigation into leak, accuse Democrats.
Trent Lott reveals leak likely came from a GOP-only meeting with Dick Cheney.
OOPS!
November 8th, 2005 at 6:28 pmTrent is raining on a lot of GOP parades lately. I reckon it’s safe to say he hasn’t gotten over getting the boot yet.
November 8th, 2005 at 6:30 pmFrist and Hastert cannot escape the only story that matters:
“The GOP Iraq Stonewall Crumbles.”
November 8th, 2005 at 6:31 pmAccording to the original report of this meeting, it was only Senators and no staffers who were present.
Can you believe these guys? What complete fools.
November 8th, 2005 at 6:36 pmThe real questions should be:
1. Why is Congress not more interested in investigating the illegal prisons?
2. Why was Cheney/the CIA? briefly only the REPUBLICANS about these prisons? Was that legal? Is it ethical to brief classified information to only the majority party?
November 8th, 2005 at 6:42 pmLooks like Bill Frist and Dennis Hastert should jump to the top of this week’s “Avenging Angel’s List of Conservative Transgressors.”
November 8th, 2005 at 6:47 pmThey’re giving Pat Roberts a cover for not finshing “part II” in a timely manner.
This leak will “be so important to national security in comparison to part II (old news)” will be the talking point.
November 8th, 2005 at 6:49 pmThose darn leaks, they…“could have long-term and far-reaching damaging and dangerous consequencesâ€.
November 8th, 2005 at 6:53 pmAnd this trend of leaking…“that, if not addressed swiftly and firmly, likely will worsen.â€
I wonder what he thinks about detention centers?
According to an unnamed source on Cheney’s staff the locations of some of the secret interrogation camps are as follows: Auschwitz, Berkman, Westerberk, Dachau, Buchenwald, Bergen-Bergen, Chelmo, Flossenberg, Majdanek, Neuengamme, and other similar sites. These are fitting sites for the purpose for which they are being used. They have the history and the two leaders have many similarities.
November 8th, 2005 at 6:53 pmquote
The CIA has referred the case of a Washington Post article about the agency’s “covert prison system” to the Justice Department for possible investigation as a case of improperly disclosed classified information. “Yes, a report was filed with the Department of Justice suggesting that classified information may have been revealed,” a United States official told reporters late on Tuesday.

haven’t seen this widely reported, only in the blogosphere so far….it’s a bit before 7PM Eastern.

November 8th, 2005 at 6:54 pmI could just see a meeting between Dick and Frist:
Frist: “That leak was the wrong leak.”
November 8th, 2005 at 6:55 pmDick: “The prison leak?”
Frist: “Yes, the prison leak. I was under the impression we were leaking the other thing?”
Dick: “What other leak?”
Frist: “You know…THE leak.”
Dick: “Oh shit. That’s next weeks leak. Let’s see your blackberry….There, you changed daylight savings by a week instead of an hour”
Frist: “Oh dang it. I’ll just deny everything.”

November 8th, 2005 at 7:09 pmOh, baby, me too!
November 8th, 2005 at 7:10 pmI say BEWARE! These guys are not this stupid. There must be a motive to the new leak - like taking attention from the first one.
November 8th, 2005 at 7:17 pm“Sir Leaks-A-Lot”
That’s the funniest shit I ever heard!
November 8th, 2005 at 7:24 pmTrent lot could be that stupid. Heavens, I hope so.
November 8th, 2005 at 7:25 pmHe’s so cute. Gotta’ have em.
Maybe if had elected Lott president we would have all these problems!
HA!
Also priceless line from WaPo coverage of issue:
“Never get into a pissing match with a skunk,” said one senior House Republican, who spoke on condition of anonymity to avoid crossing the leadership.

Whew…haha…that’s all I have to add to this.
November 8th, 2005 at 7:31 pmLeaker: an HCA p’od stockholder Frist never tipped off? While he sold, and walked away with millions.
November 8th, 2005 at 7:41 pmIt GETS BETTER. CIA requested Justice Dept. to initiate criminal probe of story, under same procedure it used to start a probe in the Plame case.

Trent is a dipshit but even if he’s right it doesn’t matter. The leak will originate in “We Hate Bush” headquarters.
My first thought though is that there is no truth to this report. That happens more often than not.

November 8th, 2005 at 9:28 pmThe hyopocrsy of the Republicans never ceases to amaze me. They are an embarassment.
November 8th, 2005 at 9:40 pmWhy was this classified information being discussed in a meeting with a bunch of Republicans? Did they all have clearence to see this information? What was the purpose for them to have this classified information? It seems to me the real leaker here is Cheney because he had no business leaking it to the Senators.
November 8th, 2005 at 9:56 pmI think Trent Lott smells blood in the GOP waters and is looking to get his old job back. I never thought I would back anything Lott says…but wow what a bombshell.
I cannot wait how the GOP spinmeister are going to twirl this misfire and Bush not being able to help Kilgore in VA.
It is a sinking ship folks…stinking rats first…Libby, Rove, Cheney, Bush!
November 8th, 2005 at 10:09 pmMizzIWrongyAgain,
Lott said it was from the GOP on CNN you pathetic rejected execuse for a human being. Apparently the GOPers had hid this from liberals, wonder what other lies, misdeeds and traiterous acts republicans are hiding… I say start and investigation and dig baby dig!
November 8th, 2005 at 10:13 pmRobert,
Republican think torture is A-OK, and ‘ethics’ and items like the ‘geneva convention’ are quaint but irrelevant. They’re immoral, irrational and irreversably insane.
November 8th, 2005 at 10:14 pmthis kind of thing goes both ways: a request by the reptiles for a bicarmel investigation of the cia torture centers I mean overseas prisons. as noted in the WA Post:
“Lawmakers from both parties immediately expressed misgivings about the request. Democrats pounced on it, suggesting that if the GOP leaders believe the disclosure of information on secret prisons deserves to be investigated, so does the leak of inaccurate intelligence on Saddam Hussein’s weapons of mass destruction and White House officials identifying Plame as a covert CIA operative.”
the more coverage they give the cia prison story, all the better for getting the damn things closed down, if you ask me. once the light of day shines on the torturers, they start to melt down or evaporate like vampires at sunrise.
I like what Pelosi said: “There is plenty to investigate about the Bush administration’s use and misuse of intelligence.” you go girl!!!
http://media3.washingtonpost.com/ wp-dyn/ content/ article/ 2005/ 11/ 08/ AR2005110800764.html
November 8th, 2005 at 10:15 pmI LOVE to see Frist and Hastert with egg on their faces! But let’s not forget that the point of their inquiry was not that we are operating “black” prisons in Europe, but that someone spilled the beans!
November 8th, 2005 at 10:17 pmThe Republicans have their knickers in a twist over the wrong part of the story — just like they have in the Plamegate affair where they believe outing a spy and lying to a prosecutor are trivial matters.
even better the quote by Graham, who nails the whole thing:
Sen. Lindsey O. Graham (R-S.C.) said: “Talk about not seeing the forest for the trees. The real story is those jails.”
ain’t that the truth.
November 8th, 2005 at 10:18 pmWhile leaking classified information is always a bad thing, so is engaging in blatantly illegal behavior. Classifying illegal behavior just to keep it under wraps is a bad thing, too. Those jails violate U.S. and international statutes, and that needs to stop.

November 8th, 2005 at 11:14 pmI agree Jonathan. Those prisons need to be closed down. The whole torture, rendition thing is wayyyy out of line. It needs to end.
November 8th, 2005 at 11:28 pmBut the fact that classified information was being discussed at the Republican play corner is blatant slap in the face of the American public. We have just been throught the plame outing investigation and here’s cheney discussing classified information again. It’s nuts. There is no line with these people. If they can’t even keep their mouths shut. If they don’t respect laws to protect information (even though I agree, the info should have been made public) then this is the tip of the iceberg. There is serious laws being broken I am sure.
Oops. There are serious laws being broken.
November 8th, 2005 at 11:29 pmI love it when the GOP eat their young…Ole Trent still carries a grudge about being ousted as the Majority Leader and he’s justing itching to put it to Frist..
November 8th, 2005 at 11:42 pmRight on Right I, I was waiting for you to deny the news as being false. Yet you beleive the biggest spinning news organization. Nice one hippo-krit.
Yay I-Right-I
November 8th, 2005 at 11:44 pmThe secret prisons have already been known, who cares about an “offical Leak”. We all knew it was happening anyway, and it’s going official because it crosses the line.
November 8th, 2005 at 11:46 pmForbes magazine blames blogging for Trent Lott losing his position. Wow what power these blogs have.
November 8th, 2005 at 11:53 pm“Hey, does anyone know how to get the wheels back on this thing”?
-GSD
By the way, I saw Ben Stein, who should “shut up and act”, on TuckaCarlsons’ show and he was spearheading the jihad against Patrick Fitzgerald, calling Fitzy a “thug” twice.
These people are getting mighty desperate. I think the thing they fear most, losing power, is suddenly becoming a reality and they don’t like it.
November 9th, 2005 at 12:36 amThis sounds like a trap…hang one of their own, to make it appear as though they care about Nat’l Security enought to police their own.
Don’t tell me they’re not in overdrive trying to clean up their messes right now; White House ‘hitting back’ hard supposedly in next few weeks.
November 9th, 2005 at 1:01 am“Trent is a dipshit but even if he’s right it doesn’t matter. The leak will originate in ‘We Hate Bush’ headquarters.”
Comment by I-RIGHT-I — November 8, 2005 @ 8:42 pm
So, even if First is right about the leak coming from a GOP Senator or Senate staffer who attended a GOP-only meeting with Dick Cheney –it does not matter, because you’ve looked in your crystal ball and you know in reality it came from the ‘We Hate Bush’ camp.
Whom to believe? You, a NeoCon apologist-at-all costs, or Sen Frist, who is in the know?
“My first thought though is that there is no truth to this report. That happens more often than not.”
Comment by I-RIGHT-I — November 8, 2005 @ 8:42 pm
This is not hearsay –The reporters got the story straight from the horse’s mouth: Sen. Frist. So, who is wrong here: Sen. Frist, the reporters, or you?
November 9th, 2005 at 1:26 amthese issues are coming out in greater and greater detail because there are very serious divisions and differences of opinion within the ruling elites/national security class about the guantanamo prison, Abu Ghraib, the cia detention/torture centers and the use of rendition.
at the root of it all is what to do and how far to go in the so-called “war on terror”. my feeling is that significant segments of the elite feel that cheney and the bushivites have crossed the line in many if not all these areas. and that’s the war in Iraq aside.
all this is not only extremely bad for what they call the “image of america overseas” but also quite bad for US businesses. the elites understand what blowback is, and it is happening against the US in the economic realm as well now.
simply put, a lot of this newspaper reporting and leaking of info is an attempt to bring the neo-cons under control.
the NY Times has an article today where a “classified report issued last year by the Central Intelligence Agency’s inspector general warned that interrogation procedures approved by the C.I.A. after the Sept. 11 attacks might violate some provisions of the international Convention Against Torture..” and that there has been “deep unease within the C.I.A. about the interrogation procedures.” these guys know this stuff is illegal and unproductive and sooner or later someone is going to have to stop it.

November 9th, 2005 at 2:05 amMy bet is that Frist and Hastert knew that attendees at VP’s luncheon were some of the sources of the leak before calling for the investigation. Frist and Hastert may well be using the called-for investigation to set the stage for efforts to distance the Republicans in Congress from the VP. Light shed on VP’s secretive approach to policy development would also provide ammunition for those within the President’s staff and family who want to refocus George W. away from VP’s world view.
November 9th, 2005 at 2:56 amFrist….What a loser

Well, not quite
. Poppy’s a lot lighter in the loafers if you ask me.
The only thing these clowns will be “hitting hard” is a bottle.
November 9th, 2005 at 4:01 amseems like Fristy boy and Hastert, his bitch, need to get their asses some practice at pulling their blood covered feet out of their treasonous republican mouths so they can talk more cogently and clearly. Hey Fitz, is it time to add two more idiot’s names to the ‘complicit’ criminal cabal of the W.H.I.G. gang?
November 9th, 2005 at 4:39 amOn the subject of torture and wheather it is right and wrong under any circumstances. To borrow a phrase from the Christian Right “What would Jesus do?”

November 9th, 2005 at 8:17 amIs Frist really a heart surgeon? I hope he does that better than he plots Republican strategy in the Senate. This guy seems to be consistantly screwing things up in the Senate. Not that I’m complaining or anything….
November 9th, 2005 at 8:28 amdid Graham really say that about the jails? man, there is some integrity in that party after all…
November 9th, 2005 at 9:30 amOur favorite wingnut, AssRocket said that it is time to “put osme of the Democraitc leakers in jail” before Lott announced that it was probably a Republican that leaked the info. Of course it was, the GOP doesn’t share any intel with the Dems. We all know that. ThinkProgress should gather up all of the pre’Lott bombshell quotes from the Limbaughs, Hannitys, Savages, Ingrams, etc..and juxtaposition them to what they will be spinning it as today. Opps, that’s right, they will not be talking about this again…ever.
November 9th, 2005 at 9:33 amMoney quote from Lott; “We can not remain silent. We have met the enemy, and it is us.”

November 9th, 2005 at 9:35 amTo my good Great Friends on the Left:
I paraphrase Napoleon: “Never interfere with your enemy when he is in the process of destroying himself.”
I don’t believe calling NeD or anyone else a whacko helps the true cause (as good as it feels, and ooo, it feels so good!). I believe giving Frist the help he asks for in loudly calling for this leak investigation is all we need to do. What courage for him to attack his own partisans so brazenly (giggle)!
Guess there was no political meat left for him to pick from Terry Schiavo’s bones, eh?
Also, when these radico-fundagelicals are finally routed from office, there will be no one to stop a full and complete inquiry into secret prisons, outed agents, Nigerian Wishing, backroom deals, Halliburton-style cronyism…
One day in the not-too-distant future the country will be able to decide for itself what kind of leaders we had under Bush and Team Pachyderm.
November 9th, 2005 at 9:37 amgot my link wrong! Sorry!
November 9th, 2005 at 9:38 amHey, IRI, where was your defence of torture in the other thread?
November 9th, 2005 at 9:53 amAs soon as a thread is about torture you never hear from IRI, NED & Co, as soon as it’s a “safer” territory they come back with their senseless talking points.
Cheney set these prisons up and was so proud of himself and his influence over the CIA that he just could not keep it to himself, so he blabbed to what he thought was his loyal fellow right wingnut jobbers.
McCain has been caught in a big lie here folks. He said on national television that the first he knew about these secret prisons was when he read it in the papers. Folks, he was at the Cheney luncheon and according to my source, even asked questions. McCain tries so hard to picture himself as a moderate when in fact he is as dangerous as the rest of the right wingnut jobbers.
McCain is a liar and a true blue republican who cannot be believed on anything.
November 9th, 2005 at 10:46 amReminds me of when Bob Barr called for a GAO investigation of the White House “vandalism” episode right after the Installation. He didn’t get the memo either and the unfortunate result (for the ‘Thugs) was exoneration of the Clinton Administration by GAO.
November 9th, 2005 at 11:10 am“could have long-term and far-reaching damaging and dangerous consequences†for the security of the United States.”
Translation: This makes the Bush Admin look bad and I bet some slimy liberal leaked it.
Shortly thereafter Frist and Hastert expeience a sharp pain in posterior when the letter bites them in ass.
November 9th, 2005 at 11:43 amI don’t understand this.
November 9th, 2005 at 4:07 pmMaybe it’ll be Fitzmas EVERY year! Or even every few months!
I guess this explains the comments of some GOP senator on one of those Sunday shows who, when asked about “the leak” (meaning the Plame situation) replied “which leak?”
Dead silence ensued for some time.
Whoops!
Hahahaha
November 9th, 2005 at 5:01 pmWhich leak? HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

You’re really stupid, you not understanding anything is pretty obvious..
November 9th, 2005 at 8:54 pmI thought the CIA denied the claim of secret detention centers????
If they don’t exist then how can a leak be damaging.
So there are secret detention centers.
November 9th, 2005 at 11:15 pmThis whole story sounds to me like a setup designed to purge the GOP leadership of those who have gone “off-message”.
November 10th, 2005 at 9:33 am[…] Sen. Pat Roberts (R-KA) calls off Bill Frist and his dawgs on an investigation into who leaked information about the secret prison camps to the Washington Post. I wonder why he wants Frist to back off. Oh yeah, this might be why. […]

November 10th, 2005 at 12:09 pmI don’t understand what you don’t understand. Really.
The Administration is all in a huff that someone in a secret GOP meeting about national security (can you say, “Conspiracy”?) someone leaked information about secret torture prisons, condoned by the US. The administration also, at the same time, is all in a huff because people want accountability for the leak that exposed the identity of a secret undercover agent AND the front operation used by that agent (and a number of other agents, the exact count of which IS a matter of national security and not for public knowledge). The difference is that the former leak was not authorized and serves against the GOP secret agenda, while thge latter was ordered by the administration as part of the secret agenda (and the means to be used to achieve it).
Is the hypocricy of the administration confusing? If that is the case, then welcome to the majority: we don’t have to agree on political issues, but we should all be on the same page concerning REAL matters of national security, accountability in our government, and the ethical standards by which soldiers (and others) acting in our name operate. Every soldier, every hired mercenary, every “independent contractor” is an ambassabdor for the American people. When even one such person acts unethically, the rest of the world attributes said action to every American. OUR (mine, yours, your neighbor, your parents, your kids, etc.) moral standing have been compromised by the activities encouraged by the administration. America tortures prisoners without trial or specific accusation. Until it ends, we are all participants in that torture. Torture is not justifiable, torture never produces actionable or reliable information, and this administration can produce NO proof that any of its ‘interrogations’ have produced any kind of useful information.
Finally, if you are a Christian (which, from what I gather, most of the right claim to be), you do not condone torture at any time for any reason. If you DO condone torture, you are not a Christian.
“Christian” = “Christ - like”. Would Jesus torture someone?
HaHa, now that it is known that a Republican is likely to have leaked the information, Trent Lott won’t be able to frame any Democrat, but we still have the goods on major GOP actors in the Plame case. Nice try, Trent! You Republicans are just plain evil, except for those coming around to some degree of conscience and degree of common sense and compassion, like McCain and Hagel.
December 7th, 2005 at 6:39 pmHey, reading through your posts, I didn’t realize that McCain was caught in a lie. Indeed, how could the information about the prison rendition thing be in the papers first, if it was the subject of a GOP-only meeting with Cheney? Though, I respect McCain for trying to fight against torture, mostly through personal experience, but most of the respect I might have had for him got blown out the window on that note that he said he “read it” first.
Now, I realize, it was Frist, not Lott, who called for a investigation into the leak before he realized that it is not possible for a Democrat to have leaked the information, since the Democrats are being denied vital intelligence information with which to make any decisions. Boy, Frist’s wish for a retalatory investigation sure hit the rocks fast!

January 18th, 2006 at 5:21 pm[…] Remember when Cheney hauled his overly-large ego over to the Hill and talked to the GOP leadership about the secret CIA prisons in Europe and low and behold, the story appeared in the WaPo days later in a brilliant article by Dana Priest? The GOP were all in-a-tither and were gung ho about investigating the “leak” until Trent Lott came out and rained on that parade by saying that it was likely a Republican who spilled the beans. You haven’t heard much about that investigation, have you? Nope. […]
