These Are the People in Wal-Mart’s Neighborhood

Wal-Mart CEO Lee Scott, 4/6/05:

What we’ve seen over and over again is that over a relatively short time, people come to appreciate what we offer. … They appreciate it that we hire from the neighborhood.

USA Today, 11/8/05:

In the affidavit, investigators said testimony and taped conversations from 2003 showed two executives at Wal-Mart headquarters knew that contractors and subcontractors cleaning its stores in several states employed illegal immigrants from eastern Europe and elsewhere.

Right. It’s so much better that Walmart has come along to hire from the neighborhood. All those smaller shops that couldn’t compete with Walmart always outsourced their work overseas. Walmart is soooo much better.

I’m watching the screening of Greenwald’s Wal-Mart movie next week. I’m thrilled that there are so many viewings here and all over the country. There is a Wal-Mart on every other block here and half the population dresses exactly the same. They sell ugly white trash stuff anyway. It is easy for me NOT to shop there. I can’t imagine it being worth the extra hour of trying to manuever around the crappola to save 20 cents on detergent. Wal-Mart sells garbage. C’mon people, it doesn’t cost any more money to have a little class. Thrift stores have better quality.

So, to the troll in #1 – please, by all means, shop who you are.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but RogerP is right in one sense. We all like buying that cheap Chinese shit. Another thing: what do us rightwingers care about some cheap-assed company who moves into a neighborhood, then exploits and take advantage of the its most desperate and vulnerbable citizens? Right, RogerP?

Thanks for your comment, but perhaps you can answer one question about it. I’m so stupid that I need clarification I guess…

Where the &*#%@%$ does it say in that posting “don’t shop at Walmart?”

I guess I’m so blind that I can’t see it, but you wouldn’t have claimed that someone was trying to dictate when and where you could shop if it didn’t say that would you?

Or is this a strawman argument?

The article says “spokesman said A, but B is the case. Either spokesman is lying or ill-informed.”

next time you’re going to troll, please make it at least semi-literate and relevant.

“This is typical of the garbage you spew. Don’t try and dictate when and where I can shop. There is no proof that the CEO knew about these practices.” Would have been a much more reasonable comment.

There’s a lot of things to hate about Wal Mart. They buy sheep shit from the Red Chinese who produce almost everything they sell by prison, slave or peon labor. They hire the most ignorant people they can find (black) and pay them shit with little benefits. They promote only the “special classes”; women, blacks and other assorted losers.

I don’t shop at Walmart and I don’t hang with anyone that does. That’s probably why I don’t know any Left Wing Walking Dead Losers. No, it does not go up in smoke –it makes Wal-Mart’s lies even worse.

The point is that, in spite of what they claimed, Wal-Mart is not hiring from the neighbourhood.

To make matters worse, not only are they not hiring locally, their sub-contractors were hiring illegal aliens –and they knew it before they even made the claim.

    To put it simply:
CLAIM: “We hire people from the neighbourhood”
FACT: Using contractors who employed illegal aliens.

Can’t you post one comment without making derogatory remarks about black people and/or women?

  24. Gregor Samsa says:

The knee-jerk reaction of these NeoCon apologists is insane! “If Think Progress says it, there must be something wrong with it” kind of mentality.

why should poor americans be told to go pay higher prices at whole-foods or buy from the Gap or Banana Republic? hell, they’ll be paying more even at a mom and pop grocery store.

I think black men who sell drugs should stop selling drugs and get a job so they can support all their single black moms. And I think poor Americans shouldn’t have to pay higher prices for food and clothes.

It’s probably just a guilty conscience. Folks who don’t mind spending good money on Red Chinese goods made by slave, prison and peon labor to enrich the elite political and military class of a brutal dictatorship have a lot to answer for.

By the way, you can’t really blame Walmart any more than you can blame drug and smut peddlers. They wouldn’t be in business doing the things they do if they didn’t have a willing customer base; people of low morals and poor taste mostly who vote the straight Democratic ticket.

“You know, I’d be willing to bet what’s in my pocket against what’s in yours that 99.999% of all American drug and smut peddlers you ask will say they voted for John Kerry.”

Sure, you’re welcome to one used cotton handkerchief… But, I don’t know any “drug and smut peddlers” to ask them. I do believe that Rush Limbaugh might know one or two, and Bill O’Reilly, Scooter Libby and Mrs Cheney have all written smut (or falafels one or the other)… I can’t see any of them voting for John Kerry.

So, I guess we need a scientific survey of “drug and smut peddlers” to find out… Do you know of one? What are your definitions of “drug and smut peddlers” as I don’t want to include pharmacists and coal merchants if that’s not what you meant…

  39. Zwack says:

    #38 Who said I was a democrat?

I wanted to lay ground rules as pharmaceuticals are drugs and therefore pharmacists can be classified as drug peddlers and smut is also another word for soot, and so people selling coal might well be considered to be smut peddlers.

Please define what your drug addled, smutty brain means by “drug and smut peddlers” so that we can look into their politics, rather than argue about semantics. I don’t wnat you crying that I was ignoring what you really meant.

  40. I-RIGHT-I says:

    #38 Who said I was a democrat?

    Comment by Zwack

You didn’t have to say. Your question gave you away. Real Democrats don’t think drugs (recreational non prescription) and smut (Larry Flint and Co.) are all that bad and so like to play word games with the terms. You’re a Democrat all right.

  41. Zwack says:

    #41…

Your comment shows how much you like to stereotype. I am not a Democrat, nor am I a Republican. Read my other comments and you would know that I’m not even an American.

Some “drugs” are both “recreational non prescription” and “prescription” depending on where you live (legalised Marijuana exists in several states for example).

“Smut” is in the eye of the beholder. Would you consider pictures of topless women to be “Smut”? If so, go visit an art gallery or two. Is it still “Smut”? Can you tell me the difference between a playboy centerfold, a painting by Vargas and a painting by Renoir? Which ones are “Smut” and which are Art?

All I asked you for was an exact definition of what constituted “Drug and smut peddlers” so that I had a basis for a scientific survey. I have been in arguments with idiots before where they argued that cultural differences caused some statistics to be meaningless while other statistics that supported their conclusion were acceptable. Even though they had the same “cultural differences”.

Stamp out WalMart! We shouldn’t have any stores that the French wouldn’t shop at! Besides, I can hardly get my Volvo into their white trash parking spaces and the people who shop there watch NasCar…..ICK! If poor people can’t afford Les Shoppe du Triumphe then they should go hungry until they’ve learned their lesson…

  43. Mark Marco says:

P.S. If WalMart DOES want the French to shop there they could attract them with some burning cars and marauding “youths” in the parking lot. Marco is a marketing genius!!

  44. Zwack says:

Mark Marco you shouldn’t be driving. Given that I’ve seen F550s and H2s parked within the bays at Walmart, if you can’t park a Volvo in the same space you should not be on the road.

I don’t understand your anti-french sentiments. Given that you can’t even name a single french supermarket chain, I assume that you have never been to France and are instead showing the world what a wonderful, tolerant person you are. (Leclerc, Carrefour and Magasins U should give you a start…)

If you want to watch Nascar, go for it. If you don’t like Nascar don’t watch it. I don’t think that Americans are forced to watch (or not) sports yet.

Making light of the French riots is not funny. For the people who have lost anything as a result, it is very serious. I was shocked by the fact that the unrest had to last for over a week before the American media mentioned it.

  45. Mark Marco says:

Zwack- Thank you for defending the French, steering me right about the parking spaces and looking up the word gullible in the dictionary.
P.S. I just found out that Peugot is French for BBQ! My tolerance is growing…..

  46. Zwack says:

Sorry Mark Marco, the word Gullible isn’t in the dictionary.

Your post wasn’t satire… Satire is funny. Your post was just intolerant drivel. I assumed that it was supposed to be a dig at “French loving liberals” but it just came across as a bunch of claptrap.

  47. Scat says:

Doesn’t the fact that Wal-Mart is so successful fly in the face of the liberal weenie’s claim that they represent main stream America? If they are so right and main stream America supports their agenda, why is Wal-Mart so successful? Hahahahah!!

  48. Zwack says:

The “Liberal agenda” is not a single agenda. The working practices supported by Walmart are not usually approved of by the people that they apply to. If you were earning minimum wage, wouldn’t you want affordable health care?

But, equally, Walmart is cheap. Their goods are “affordable”. The majority of Americans are trying to make ends meet and that means buyng as cheaply as possible. Not everyone can afford to boycott companies. Thus Walmart makes a profit.

I don’t see this as a lack of support for Liberal “weenies” or Liberal policies, but simply a symptom of the reality of living in this Republican controlled company where being a corporate slave means that you can’t afford little luxuries (like three meals a day)… I know my stepdaughter has $20 per month after they have paid all their bills, including most of their food bills. That $20 has to provide clothing and any emergencies mean problems… Healthcare is currently provided by me, but even then, she can’t easily afford the $10 copay for a doctors office visit, and the $10 prescription charge…

Tell me why people should live like that… or worse.

    Z.

    Z.

  49. Mark Marco says:

Z- Good post! There is a serious dilemna in economic education. The reality is that looking to corporations to act from a “moral” position is to legislate the morality of what we want…an option…but a job killer… Companies have ONE priority and that is to make money for stockholders, parents have one priority and that is too give our kids financial literacy and not blame others for not having the tools. I agree with you on everything but the solution, and that is where the discussion should begin.

  50. Zwack says:

    Thank you Mark Marco,

I don’t know what the solution is… But there is a problem. Never mind the growing gap between the wealthy and the middle classes or the wealthy and the poor.

My personal belief is that everyone should be able to afford healthcare, food and shelter. If these three basic needs are met then everything else is luxuries.

People have been shown by the media that they need televisions, cars, huge mansions with hot tubs and swimming pools to be “happy”. As a result their is a tendency to ce a consumer when you can’t afford it.

If I could make changes I would have universal healthcare, low cost housing and a means-tested food program. Yes, there would be a cost, but I have lived under a nationalised health care system and approximately the same percentage of my wages went in taxes to provide social security, health care and other government services as I pay in the US to provide health care for myself and taxes… The big difference is that there my money helped pay for universal health care, here it helps pay for my healthcare and my family’s…

Now if America provided those three things, it would be a worl leader. There are details that would have to be worked out, but even then it is doable. For example, a food progrma could require that people are given basic nutrition and cooking classes, and some basic nutritious foods. It may not be exciting but it will keep you alive. Teach people that for less than the cost of two fast food meals they could make a good meal for four (or more), and perhaps they will be able to care for themselves more.

Our society gives clues to the system in place. We all have heard the saying “He has more money than god.” There is also an episode of the Simpsons where god meets Homer and says “I’m too old and rich for this.”

This is the system on earth because this is the system everywhere.

I don’t want to suggest the upper eschelons are evil and good is the fringe.

But they have made it abundantly clear that doing business with evil (disfavored) won’t help people. They say only good would have the ear, since evil is struggling for survival, and therefore only the favored could help.

The clues are there which companies are favored and which are disfavored, but they conceal it very hard because it is so crucial.

I offer an example of historical proportions:::

People point to Walmart and cry “anti-union”.
Unions enable disfavored people to live satisfactorly without addressing their disfavor. This way their family’s problems are never resolved. Without the union they would have to accept the heirarchy, their own inferiority.
    Unions serve to empower.
Walmart is anti-union because they are good. They try to help people address and resolve their problems by creating an enviornment where there are fewer hurdles.

Media ridicule and lawsuits are creations to reinforce people’s belief that Walmart is evil in a subsegment of the indistry dominated by the middle and lower classes.
Low-cost disfavored Chinese labor is utilized by corporate america to maximize margins. They all do it. Only WalMart gets fingered because they are the ones who help, and those who seek to create confusion in the marketplace want to eliminate the vast middle class who have a real chance and instead stick with lower classes who may not work otherwise. So they dirty him up while allowing the others to appear clean.

The middle class is being deceived. They are being misled into the unfavored, and subsequently will have no assistance from their purchases with corporate america.

I believe the coining of the term “Uncle Sam” was a clue alluding to just this::Sam Walton and WalMart is one of few saviors of the peasant class.

Amercia is a country of castoffs, rejects. Italy sent its criminals. Malcontents.
Between the thrones, the klans and kindred, they “decided” who they didn’t want and acted, creating discontent and/or starvation.
The u.s. is full of disfavored rejects. It is the reason for the myriad of problems not found in European countries. As far as the Rockafellers and other industrialists of the 19th century go, I suspect these aren’t their real names. I suspect they were chosen to go and head this new empire.

Royalty is the right way to organize a society. Dictatorships and monarchies are a reflection of the antient’s hierarchical organization.
Positions go to those who have favor with the rulers, as opposed to being elected.
Elections bring a false sense of how the world is. Democracy misleads people.
Which is why the disfavored rejects were sent to the shores of America::To keep them on the wrong path.

Jesus Christ is a religious figure of evil. These seperatist churches formed so they could still capture the rest of the white people, keeping them worshipping the wrong god.
And now they do it to people of color, Latinos and Asians, after centuries of preying upon them.

Simpson’s foreshadowing::Helloween IV special, Flanders is Satan. “Last one you ever suspect.”
“You’ll see lots of nuns where you’re going:::hell!!!” St. Wigham, Helloween VI, missionary work, destroying cultures.
Over and over, the Simpsons was a source of education and enlightenment, a target of ridicule by the system which wishes to conceal its secrets.

Since Buddism doesn’t recongnize a god, the calls are never heard, and Chinese representation is instead selected by the thrones.
Budda was the Asian’s Jesus Christ::: bad for the people. “They came up at the same time for a reason.”

Jews maim the body formed in the image of “god”, and inflicted circumsision upon all other white people, as well as the evil that is Jesus Christ.
I think about how Jews (were used to) created homosexuality among Slavics, retribution for the Holocaust.
Then I think of the Catholic Church and its troubles.
What connection is here between Jews and the Catholic church???
If it is their sinister motives that’s behind the evil that is Jesus Christ are they being used at all?
Perhaps it is them who are pulling strings.
Their centuries of slavery in Egypt proves their disfavor.
The Jew leaders decided to prey on the up-and-coming Europeans to try to fix their problems with the ruling elite, a recurring aspect of their methodology.

I believe Islam is the one true religion, and those misled christians who attack “god”’s most favored people will pay dearly one day.
