UPDATE: White House Stands By Altered Transcript

Pressure from the blogosphere has forced the White House to answer more questions about the transcript of the October 31 press briefing. Video of the briefing clearly demonstrates that, after NBC’s David Gregory described the involvement of Karl Rove and Scooter Libby in the CIA leak scandal, McClellan said “that’s accurate.” Nevertheless, the White House transcript lists McClellan’s answer as “I don’t think that’s accurate.”

Editor and Publisher asked the White House spokeswoman Dana Perino about the discrepancy:

When asked about the fact that the White House version contradicts video accounts of the briefing, Perino added, “the White House stenographer was in the room and I was in the room” and they heard McClellan say “I don’t think that’s accurate.”

You’d think from Perino’s answer that this was the early 20th Century and video had just been invented. In 2005, however, no one can seriously argue that their recollection is more reliable than a video recording.

  1. The Mad Texan says:

When Bill Maher got fired from “Politically Incorrect” Ari Fleischer commented during a press conference that Americans needed to “watch what they say.” At first the White House web page posted a transcript that omitted this comment. Of course, the transcript patently contradicted the audio record of the press conference. At some point the WH corrected the transcript.

Changing the record seems to be SOP for these SOBs.

And I could go on and on.

Blair’s “white paper” was its brilliant exploitation of the public confusion between two similar-sounding substances: Uranium and Uranium 235. The crucial difference is that Uranium is not fissile, which means it cannot be split to cause a chain reaction leading to a nuclear explosion, while Uranium-235 is fissile. The fissile material indispensable to making nuclear weapons is heavily-concentrated U-235.
Eleven days earlier, at a Pentagon briefing and slide show, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, using his alias “Senior Defense Official,” informed reporters about the danger of Saddam Hussein obtaining fissile material from a foreign supplier. With it, he estimated Iraq could build nuclear weapons in a matter of months. “The key issue here is always fissile material,” he said “And that remains probably the only issue, in the case of Iraq.” When reporters at the briefing pressed Rumsfeld about whether the US had any intelligence that Iraq had means of obtaining this critical ingredient, he pointedly referred them to CIA Director George Tenet testimony that “our major near-term concern is the possibility that Saddam might gain access to fissile material.” But that was as far as he “could” go, he explained

I wrote to my representatives and told them my views on Bush and company, and suggested that I would like to see them proceed with impeachment hearings. Part of my supporting information I supplied was the fact that false, and altered, information was used as support for the war and the WH lied to the American people.

I received a letter last night that told me that though they don’t like what the administration is doing, there are no plans to impeach at this point.

Sorry for being off topic, but until we can get our representatives to stand up we cannot expect the WH to do anything different.

  15. Dumb Fox says:

I think we should cut a deal with White House – let’s allow them to keep this change.

In return, whenever Scotty responds to journalists with “that’s accurate”, we reserve the right to change that response to “I don’t think that’s accurate”, regardless of what the video or WH stenographer say.

    For example…

    Scott: Go ahead, Jeff.

Q: I understand the President has full confidence in Vice-President Cheney, Karl Rove and all the White House staff.

    Scott: I don’t think that’s accurate.

    Snippo~

Stephen Farrell, Middle East Correspondent of The Times, explains why the ousting of Shimon Peres from the leadership of the Israeli Labour Party could soon spell the end of Ariel Sharon’s governing coalition.

“This is a big shock and a big deal. It’s a big deal for Israel because it has ramifications that are national as well as for party politics.

“Amir Peretz, the new Labour leader, is a left-wing unionist and a populist who believes that the Labour Party should not be in an alliance with a right-wing party like Mr Sharon’s Likud. His victory means that Mr Sharon’s already fragile coalition is almost certain to fall and people are talking about when, rather than if, the Prime Minister will be forced to call early elections. They could come as soon as next spring.

“In terms of concessions to the Palestinians, there’s no doubt that Mr Peretz is dove-ish. He will push for negotiations. But that’s not what has brought this about. The key issue here is the internal politics of the Labour Party and his opposition to Mr Peres.

“Mr Peres represented the white, Ashkenazi, European-descended elite that has dominated the Labour Party since its inception in the 1930s. He’s enormously respected on the world stage but domestically he’s much less attractive and has a frankly terrible record, losing five out of five elections to become Prime Minister.

“Mr Peretz is the opposite. A Moroccan immigrant who came to Israel aged four, he grew up in a deeply unfashionable, poor district that was esssentially a transfer area for poor African Jews and Jews from the Arab world who came to Israel and have been historically marginalised. His appeal – and he made this clear in his victory speech – will be to the poor, the old and the immigrant. He intends to push for a social revolution in Israel.

“That will include breaking with Mr Sharon and the Likud party. The only reason that Labour supported Mr Sharon was that, for whatever reason he made the decision, the Prime Minister decided to pull out of Gaza and that was something that was on Labour’s agenda. They were happy to prop him up while he did so, but now that Gaza is gone, there is no reason to support him any more because, fundamentally, they oppose him on every other issue.

“Mr Sharon does not believe in negotiations with the Palestinians. The Gaza pull-out was done without any negotiations. Mr Sharon decided it was the right thing to do and imposed it on the region. The Left’s view is that if you want real peace with the Palestinians, you have to talk to them.

    Story:http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,251-1866172,00.html

“As for Mr Peres, it looks like the end – but that is a sentence that has been said many, many times before.”

Can we get David Gregory (he would enjoy doing this) to bring a laptop up to Scotty and show him the taope and ask him where he’s saying “I don’t think…” before he says “that’s accurate.”

Scotty should be fired for lying to us, especially if he trots out that tired old line of his, “I think I’ve earned the trust of the people in this room and the trust of the American people.” He hasn’t earned either.

My fear is that they’ll replace him with someone whose lies are harder to read. Scotty’s “codes” have been broken. And you never let an enemy know you’ve broken his code.

  19. kindness says:

frdb – what you say may very well have truth but the majority of Israelis are still European. A bigger issue is that Benjamin Netanyaho(?) is coming up in the polls over there to challenge Sharon. Now I don’t like Sharon cause he’s a hard ass hawk, but BN is a complete trogladite. He supports deporting all non-jews from Israel and retaking all the land they can grab.

So, just be careful what you wish for. You may be surprised when you get it.

  20. jb says:

I detest the Bush administration, but Scotty shakes his head and his lips are moving before we hear (through the microphone) “that’s accurate”. I think it is possible they are right on this.

More importantly, what the questioner said, was in fact, accurate, whatever Scotty said.

  21. optimus says:

I saw the video, and you only hear “that’s accurate”.

But since McClellan’s comment was an interjection, they had to switch back to his microphone. It’s entirely possible that the first second of his comment was cut off. If you watch those videos, they frequently lose the first syllable or two of the speaker when they’re switching between mics.

Don’t search for scandals where none exist. At best, you’ve got McClellan in a freudian slip. At worst, you’ve got an comment whose first words were off mic.

For chrissakes, with the blunders, corruption and incompetence of your current administration, I can’t imagine that you have to resort to this kind of parsing to impune the Bushies.

  22. Zookeeper says:

At first glance I thought this was a fairly minor issue, but then I started thinking about this administration and their capacity for dishonesty, and now I wonder if every word ever documented needs to be checked. Jeebus…

  26. Spudge_Boy says:

I can’t believe anybody would argue that he says “I don’t think that’s accurate.”

Read the line of questioning and it clearly doesn’t fit:

Q Whether there’s a question of legality, we know for a fact that there was involvement. We know that Karl Rove, based on what he and his lawyer have said, did have a conversation about somebody who Patrick Fitzgerald said was a covert officer of the Central Intelligence Agency. We know that Scooter Libby also had conversations.

    MR. McCLELLAN: I don’t think that’s accurate.

Q So aside from the question of legality here, you were wrong, weren’t you?

    He clearly said “That’s accurate.”

I-RIGHT-I is not only crazy, he is deaf and blind as well. That video does not look like a badly dubbed Japanese movie. It is crystal clear what he says.

IS BIRD FLU A HOAX? DR. MERCOLA SAYS YES.
    http://www.mercola.com/blog/2005/oct/18/avian_flu_epidemic_scare_is_a_hoax

The popular media continues to reinforce this unbased fear. In the editorial section of the October 17, 2005 issue of the Wall Street Journal, Dr. Henry Miller, former director of the Office of Biotechnology at the FDA, seeks to frighten the US public by telling us that the avian flu virus can jump from birds to humans and produce a fatal illness in 50% of those infected.

Ah there’s the rub. 50% fatality rate sounds pretty scary to me. What Dr. Miller and the other experts fail to explain is how these numbers were derived. Did they examine everyone who contracted the avian flu and use those numbers or did they examine the sickest of the sick who had come down with the avian flu and determine the mortality from there?

Of course it was the later, and from the 60 people who have died from this in THIRD world countries we are being told that anywhere from 200,000 AT BEST to two million people at worst will die from the avian flu.

This is shody science at best and beyond belief that any reputable scientist could get away with such nonsense.
