Americans’ Confidence In Direction of U.S. Plunges; 21 Points Lower Than Iraqis’ Confidence In Iraq

A new poll by NBC and the Wall Street Journal found that just 26 percent of Americans believe that the country is “headed in the right direction.”

It’s an astoundingly low number. Iraqis – who are battling a deadly insurgency and live in a country on the brink of a civil war – are far more content with the direction of their country:

A recent poll by the International Republican Institute, a conservative group that promotes democracy, showed that only 47 percent of Iraqis surveyed in early October said the country was moving in the right direction.

Note: 47 percent confidence was considered “low.”

Thats intutively consistent, isn't it? We screwed up a desirable objective pretty royally, even if it wasn't the one that was "sold" to the US voter. Many Iraqis seem to want a progressive agenda they never would have gotten under Saddam, evem if they don't like us. We should just get out on the most honorable terms available. That would push Bush's approval numbers up right there.

  2. HeyMan Says:

Perhaps that was the grand plan of Bush all along: Make Iraq better than US and make liberals move there.

  3. jperkins Says:

Obviously, the 74% that either had no opinion on the matter or think that the U.S. isn't moving in the right direction are the same lunatic "fringe" that we keep hearing about on Fox and from the Bush apologists.

  4. Chris in AZ Says:

    That's one helluva fringe!!

  5. Ugh Says:

Just think, he's only President for three years and three months longer.

  6. Ugh Says:

Hey, when did the whitehouse.gov website start calling the press briefings "gaggles."

  7. The Muse Says:

Hey there's an election coming up in Iraq...maybe Bush could continue his career in a democrat and democracy free zone...

New on EWM: “Rove out, Rover in.”
Scaled down agenda includes a “war on gingivitis” and plans to occupy Aruba.

  8. kindness Says:

I think Homer Simpson says it best....

  9. Average TV Viewer Says:

Clearly the poll is flawed. You can tell because Bush will be on TV later to bash Dems and tell Americans how stupid we are for not seeing things his way.

  10. Marie Says:

Well, after the bombing and near complete destruction of their country, the only way from there is up. We, on the other hand, after 5 years of Bush&Co. are on the way down. Bush is going to lie to the public today and try to raise his poll numbers (the ones he says he doesn't pay attention to)and he will pander to the Veterans while back in D.C. they are gutting every program available to the Vets.
When he speaks - he lies. The public is seeing that now -- too bad foir us all that it took this long. And we still have that stubborn 35% who think he is Christ on earth.

  11. Jeremy Says:

Well it looks like Bush is going to give a speech about the war on terror today. Suprise, suprise.

  12. Marie C Says:

Don't forget that many Iraqis never knew what it was like before Saddam and thus they have nothing to compare it with. We however remember when our budget wasn't at a record deficit, our reputation wasn't in tatters, our future wasn't increasingly mortgaged to pay no bid contracts to companies who don't deliver the goods, our government wasn't kowtowing to religious whackos, and we didn't have to look at politicians lying while smirking. I'm surprised the confidence level isn't lower than that.

  13. dv909 Says:

I think we should make Iraq the 51st state.

  14. ogb1 Says:

If Martha Steward and L'll Kim can go to jail for lying, George W. Bush and the Neo Cons should be on death row for lying about the war in Iraq..

  15. Jeremy Says:

So Bushie is sinking in the polls, and what does he do? Gives a speech about the war on terror. Apparently George Bush wants remind the U.S public that the democrats saw the same intel as the Bush administration.

Well Bushie boy, only problem is that many democrats voted for us to go to war based on the belief that they had WMD's, but they also believed that if we FOUND NONE we would not go to war. Of course, weapons inspectors found no WMD's and Bush said "whatever!" and sent troops in anyways, betraying the democrats who voted in belief that we would only attack if they had WMD's.

This is what conservatives fail to remember.

So, you think we should just march around the globe invade them and making them part of the United States? Like the Romans, like the Nazis? You know, neither one of those empires are around anymore.

  17. Fred Says:

Stay the course, walk the plank

  18. dv909 Says:

#17 That was just my attempt at sarcasm. Sorry for misleading you.

  19. Ringo Says:

#5: Not unless he and his entire administration are impeached. Nixon caved, and back then no one thought it could happen. Nixon wasn't sentenced to death though. Bush and Co. can be sentenced to death. Everything that's gone on in his administration is HIGH TREASON. Impeach, prosecute for war crimes, and the ultimate punishment for just how feverishly Bush embraced and partied over the Texas death penalty, he himself is given the death penalty for the heinous war crimes he has committed.

  20. Speed King Says:

It's just a sign of the progress we're making, you libs! That means that Iraq is twice as safe and prosperous as the United States!

  21. Andrew G. Says:

I think that it means that the public thinks that we CAN do better than we are doing now.

That day should come about sooner, rather than later.

  22. Maezeppa Says:

I trust the poll-takers, the International Republican Institute, about as far as I can throw them. These satisfaction numbers, while deemed "low" are still far higher than the confidential survey the British took just weeks earlier.

  23. Chris Fick Says:

Sounds like Republican voters are finally starting to realize that the Republican party does not represent them. Thank God, it's about time. Now if we can start cutting into the profits of the big corporations that fund the GOP through boycotts we can start weeding these crooks out of our government.

  24. Bubba Ram Dos Says:

Take a close look at IRI. Every single member of their board of directors is a conservative Republican. They have been involved in efforts in SOuth America to destabilize governments that the Republicans didn't like, by providing "education" and "training". If these are the best results that a far-right group can come up with, things are even worse in Iraq than they seem, if such a thing is possible.

food for thought... (re: adding 'states')

    how about 'annexing' (Old) Mexico?!

    * eliminate the immigration problem
    * acquire oodles of (now) domestic oil reserves/access
    * add thousands of miles of great beaches

    just 'spit ballin' here

  26. Cyra Brown Says:

The congressman for my district, Adam Smith (D), WA State, was speaking in an article in my local paper today about trying to introduce a resolution, along with Rep.Kucinich, regarding intel investigations, which of course was slapped down right away. But he seems to be under the mistaken impression that Saddam Hussein was not allowing the weapons inspectors into Iraq, so a resolution to use force to make him comply was reasonable. I immediately sent him a letter informing him that it was Bush who told the IAEA, who were in Iraq, to get out. It made me aware that there may be several members of the House and Senate, who for SOME reason are cluless about what really happenned. Scary thought. But hopefully, he will be prodded to look further, and tell others. We can hope....but check on your Rep's position, Senators too. This is alarming.

  27. makesenseofit Says:

It took 6 years for the sheepish following to finally become independent thinkers and have a different opinion for the polls to make sense of the FRAUD exposed from the administration...

  28. Nigel Snarkley-Smythe Says:

It would be interesting to know more about the 26%. What % of those are of the evangelical cult? They just do what their regional franchise holder instructs since he communicates directly with GEEsus.

  29. julie foster Says:

The idea of boycotting all the companies who support the republican agenda is wonderful! We know from the 60's that boycotts work...we boycotted grapes and Chavez won better pay and conditions for the grape workers...Boycotts really Work, if we all together use our displine and tell everyone we know who cares about the world, to Boycott! We, the people, must do something that will financially affect those who are in power, that is all they think and live for--- the almighty dollar! So, let's get together, and Boycott all the right wing - neocon companies- including their t.v. and radio programs...Whenever we do something that is for the good of the people, it empowers us, we feel as if, only if it's a small gesture, we're doing Something to effect real change! We are so desensitized, so overwhelmed, so brain dirtied, that we feel helpless so much of the time...Boycott, boycott, boycott! All Power to the People! jumi-hawaii

  30. mighty aphrodite Says:

Thanks Julie - for that "trip back in time" - could almost "feel the love"! You forgot, "right on" and "groovy"!!

  31. mighty aphrodite Says:

Nico-I'm sure it was just an "innocent" oversight on your part, although, I have not found the term "thorough" one I would use to describe your work, but you did neglect to mention the jump in consumer confidence since August. Stop being such an average student.

  32. Ginger Says:

Send Karen Hughes right on over there....she'll convince 'em!!! (Mz. Diplomacy, dontcha' know.) Think about it, folks, 9/11 was the best thing that EVER happened to BushBoy. Without it, he would have been a total washout and a one-termer. Wanna' bet the prez makes another "surprise" visit to shore up the troops on Thanksgiving....what the hell is it with all these "surprise" visits anyway (Bush, Cheney, Rummy, Condi). Just once, they otta' send them in a Hummvie...right on down the road from the airport and feed them MREs...that would be showing support for the troops!
