Yesterday, Fox News anchor John Gibson appeared on San Francisco Fox affiliate KTVU to promote his new book, “The War on Christmas.” It was bad timing — the San Francisco Chronicle had just published remarks by fellow Fox host Bill O’Reilly approving of a terrorist attack on the city.
Asked about the comments, Gibson claimed he was “sure” that O’Reilly had been taken out of context, and offered this defense: “He goes to San Francisco all the time. … I know he loves the city.”
ANCHOR: You don’t have to make any excuses for your colleague Bill O’Reilly, but on the front page of the Chronicle today, he talks about if al Qaeda comes into San Francisco and blows it up, in essence, who cares? Go al Qaeda, blow up Coit Tower. That’s hateful talk. It’s irresponsible. You can make fun of voting on a gun issue. You can make fun of San Francisco for keeping the military out of recruiting. But you can’t say al Qaeda, go get them.
JOHN GIBSON: I can’t imagine Bill meant that. He goes to San Francisco all the time. He does shows from there. He has a good time there. I know he loves the city. I’m sure that’s not what he meant.
Gibson couldn’t even bring himself to criticize right-wing televangelist Pat Roberton for telling residents of Dover, Pennsylvania, “if there is a disaster in your area, don’t turn to God, you just rejected Him from your city.” Rather, Gibson claimed that “what a lot of this [criticism] comes from” is “animosity towards Christians because of political considerations.”
ANCHOR: You have Pat Robertson yesterday talking to the people of Dover, Pennsylvania, and saying that disaster may strike you because you voted God out of your city by ousting the school board members who favored teaching intelligent design. That’s hateful talk.
GIBSON: Well, I think what he said was, when disaster strikes you, don’t turn to God, ask your Darwinians for help.
ANCHOR: Well, I have a quote here, but maybe he did say that as well. (Ed. note: Robertson: “Don’t wonder why He hasn’t helped you when problems begin, if they begin. I’m not saying they will, but if they do, just remember, you just voted God out of your city.”)
GIBSON: Well, but the point is, Pat says a lot of things. And that’s Pat Robertson. You talk to him about why he said a certain thing. I think that what a lot of this comes from, especially this declaring ordinary signs of the Christmas season to be religious symbols, and, therefore, have to be out of the public view, is animosity towards Christians because of political considerations. Because Christians are making arguments against abortion, or for intelligent design, or against gay marriage, and people are angry at them about those political positions, and they tend to transfer that over to the practice of the religion.
Who does this Gibson think he is?
November 12th, 2005 at 9:55 amDid you hear about Gibson? Read on…
Today on EWM, a scientific shocker: Study: Euthanizing Right-wing Pundits would Solve Global Warming
…The results varied widely. For example, Rush Limbaugh’s breath was found to be the pollution equivalent of an 18-ton garbage truck while Michael Savage’s sample scored just below a battery-powered dildo.
The project was not without its setbacks, the data had to be reworked when it was discovered that Fox anchor John Gibson has no cellular activity and was reclassified as “undead.
November 12th, 2005 at 10:04 amHmmmmm, seems like we have bi-partisan stupidity here. Robertson seems oppossed to people expressing their religious views at the ballot box, while EWM and the Muse prefer euthanasia to free speech. Well, isn’t that special?
Here’s a suggestion from a partisan Republican: how about we let folks exercise their constitutional rights?
Rev. Robertson, do you really opposse the free exercise of religion? Do you really want to see government impose their religious views on school children? I don’t mean today, when there’s a Christian in the White House. I mean down the road, say for example if Joe Lieberman gets elected.
Muse, do you really think euthanasia is the proper response to free speech? If so, would you be willing to kill everyone at EWM and save a bullet for yourself?
Think it through, people. One of the great things about this country is that all citizens can express their views in wide variety of non-harmful ways. I’d llike to see the Muse or EWM offer thoughtful criticism of talk radio. And I’d like to see Pat Robertson find a way to support the school board members who lost their election, without the threat of fire and brimstone for the folks who voted as they saw fit.
November 12th, 2005 at 10:27 amSorry, John, Bill stands by his remarks. Guess he wasn’t taken out of context. There’s audio at this link:
http://www.kron4.com/Global/story.asp?S=4107018&nav=5D7l
November 12th, 2005 at 10:40 amMuse, do you really think euthanasia is the proper response to free speech?
The Deke
Fox News isn’t free speech. It’s very expensive crypto-fascist propaganda, stupid. And bullets won’t cut it. Something a little bigger will be needed. Maybe al-Qaeda will take care of them instead of S.F. I’d party.
Whatsa matter? Afraid of a little bloodshed?
November 12th, 2005 at 10:43 amHow do you spell FOXNEWS? Well, there are two spellings, the long one and the short, abbreviated, one. Here’s the long spelling: autocratsandimbeciles. And, here’s the abbreviated one: denialuntopeopleofdifference. Mr. Gibson, may only crackheads buy your latest book! -Kevo
November 12th, 2005 at 10:45 amYou can’t make this stuff up.
Comedy Central wouldn’t dare.
But the mainstream media can feature it,
AND sell ads around it.
Too much.
November 12th, 2005 at 10:45 amThe Chameleons are Showing their True Colors.
Oreilly is Resorting to SHOCK-Jock TV for Ratings.
Ignore Him.
Keep an eye on the Puke Cheney.
In a June interview with Mowbray on the “700 Club”, Robertson made similar remarks.
“Maybe we need a very small nuke thrown off on Foggy Bottom to shake things up like Newt Gingrich wants to do,” he said.
(foggy Bottom is State Dept)
Robertson was referring to former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who was part of a group of conservatives accusing the State Department of undermining U.S. foreign policy by coddling authoritarian governments in the Middle East.
November 12th, 2005 at 10:51 amO’Reilly Unleashed
Sigh. Wanker extraordinaire, Mr. O’Really? from the ‘Faux Snooze’ entertainment show, is at it again. Personally I think he needs to be medicated.
November 12th, 2005 at 10:58 amMuse, your support for al-Qaeda attacking Fox News and slaughtering Americans here at home was not exactly what I had in mind when I suggested that you offer thoughtful criticism. However, if that’s the extent of your thought process, I thank you for sharing it with all of us.
November 12th, 2005 at 10:59 amNow that you mention it, I’d be glad if al-Qaeda blew up Fox News, Pat Robertson’s 700 Club and the entire CBC, and Jerry Falwell for good measure, and just for starters. Now that is what you call a winning strategy. Let the islamic fundies and the christo-fascists and crypto-fascists blow each other to kingdom come. After they have had at each other, just go in and wipe out the last clowns standing. That’s how you put an end to global terrorism.
November 12th, 2005 at 11:03 amYou sound like a crypto or christo-fascist getting nervous, there, The Geke. You should be. Us normal folks have just about had it with the likes of Fox News and the rest of them. They have gotten on our last nerve.
November 12th, 2005 at 11:07 amHere’s a suggestion from a partisan Republican
The Deke
Why would anyone entertain any suggestions from a complete moron? Here’s some good advice. Start shopping around for another homeland. A “partisan Republican” ain’t going to like it here very much in the coming years.
November 12th, 2005 at 11:15 amSpeaking of terror against Americans, here’s an excerpt from Bill O’Reilly’s 1998 novel, “Those Who Trespass.”
“He gently teased her by licking the areas around her most sensitive erogenous zone. Then he slipped her panties down her legs and, within seconds, his tongue was inside her, moving rapidly.”
Apparently, he went to the same writing class as Scooter Libby.
November 12th, 2005 at 11:39 amNow, Now…
To demean ourselves would give rise to a victorious conservative view, that if we do it then they will as well. Just check your historical data, because for every point there is a counter-point of contention that the liberals would have done the same thing…
Bush just had a speech…and for his ignorance, he has laid out the trap of opposition to those who would enter without seeing the foliage covering the true danger of deceit! It is NOT the majority that fuels their argument…But the one!
The conversion of one to the conservative is greater than the many that seek truth the opposite way. “If†Rosa Parks had done today what she did several decades ago, it would not be seen as historic, but it would be deemed unpatriotic and disingenuous to the moral fabric of America. They would find a sister-in-law or neighbor to say she was a troublemaker and they did not agree with her stance…Then the photo ops and then the interviews…get my point?
So, the retort here is that the laws are changed to meet the needs of the one. The government has been hijacked (to quote Bill Frist – go figure), and we all must fear falling into the same trap of looking beyond the true intent of a deceitful act…
November 12th, 2005 at 11:42 amThe albino is “sure that’s not what he meant?”
November 12th, 2005 at 12:12 pmHey Deke! I very much regret the loss of your brain. Goes to show what too much exposure to Faux (news?) does to a person of your rightwing (excuse “wrongwing”)persuasion. But you’ll be well cared for in the “home.”
November 12th, 2005 at 12:22 pmOh I forget Bush has cut out the funding for the “home.” Tough luck Deke. It looks like you be joining the rest of Bushie victims.

November 12th, 2005 at 12:23 pmOMG. EEWWWWA!
It’s good to know these neocons are dissolving in the hot water they’ve put themselves in. THEY ARE ALL MORONS.
At the Abby, we nuns have a saying: If you say it for God and all to hear, then you must mean what you say. The Reverend Mother said it best at our prayer meeting last night, “Girls, I would not want to be Bill O’Reilly come judgment day.†Praise the Lord!
November 12th, 2005 at 12:23 pmGibson says shit like this all the time too.
“Five in the noggin’” anyone?
The host should have asked him if he stood by all his stupid remarks.
November 12th, 2005 at 12:25 pmCHENEY: Interesting that Joe Wilson is running off his mouth about how Iraq trying to buy yellow cake uranium from Niger was concocted. Did you know that his wife worked at the C.I.A. in the counter proliferation division? (Fitzgerald indictment Page 5)
LEWIS “SCOOTER” LIBBY: (Speaking to Vice President Dick Cheney and Karl Rove in a White House office). That son of a bitch Wilson, a tool of the middle ranks of the CIA. For Christ sake, everyone knew that the Iraq-Niger-uranium story was bogus. So the pissed off losers at CIA sent him there to “investigate.” That’s an attack on you, boss (points to Cheney). After all, you used this claim in speeches and even fed it to the President.
November 12th, 2005 at 12:49 pmPRETTY MUCH
November 12th, 2005 at 12:57 pmSums it up, Bush is a moronic muppet, the straw man, the inflatable Rove love doll, whos too dyslexic to read, just like his brother Neil, the Savings and Loan Crook.
That brings up more Cronyism. Bush’s NCLB act is going to make Neil millions with some educational program, financed by Bush cronies. Cheney is the defacto president.
Gibson’s a hack. He’s not a journalist he’s an advocate for the Right now.
November 12th, 2005 at 12:59 pmWhy give them any wider voice than they already have (fox news)?Don’t interview the scum, don’t refer to them, ignore them in the particular, ostracize them and show them (fox newsies) as the imbeciles they are.
November 12th, 2005 at 1:10 pmWhy do all of you people hate Christmas.
-God and John Gibson
November 12th, 2005 at 1:44 pm“He goes to San Francisco all the time. … I know he loves the city.â€
Good. I hope he returns soon The City can show how much it loves him back. He’d make fine shark bait.
November 12th, 2005 at 2:17 pmGibson on the other hand should be left on the beach to be picked slowly apart by the crabs and gulls.
November 12th, 2005 at 2:19 pmThere are times such as these when I favor instant retribution. Despite O’Lielly’s body guards, he should be dragged into the middle of a San Fran Street and be hung by his tongue to a lightpole until dead and then fed to the sharks in the bay. But the sharks might have better taste. Gibson should face the same fate.
November 12th, 2005 at 2:29 pmHey They Knew,
November 12th, 2005 at 2:47 pmYou want to see cronyism. Go to the Nation Magazine and find the new Jeremy Schahill article. ‘Germ Boys and Yes Men’ This administration has left us so vulnerable it is criminal. That article should be front page news. It is frightening. We are not prepared for a flu pandemic or a bioterror attack or any public health emergency and our underbelling is showing. The guy Bush put in charge of this task was a corporate lawyer for Amtrak. Do you see any possible expertise he could bring to this job? No, either did I. The guys name is Stewart Simonson and he’s an ideologue. A hack. A croney. And like with Michael Brown, we will pay the price.
Being that conservatism is the philosophy where almost all of its adherents are void of even the slightest amount of integrity and character, it should come as no surprise that someone like John Gibson can not simply say that O’Reilly’s remarks and Robertson’s remarks are simply somewhere between wrong to crazy to flat out evil.
But that’s why they are conservatives. At least the rest of us (progressives, liberals, moderates or some hybrid thereof) can be honest when one of our own says or does something wrong.
November 12th, 2005 at 3:12 pmGibson’s an arse.
So’s the critic here who jumped all over the “euthanization” scenario (please, folks, didn’t any of these wingnuts learn anything about Swift’s Modest Proposal in college lit. courses?)–wingnut who equates this with the regular hate speech generated & broadcast by O’Reilly, Limbaugh, Hannity & the rest of them, is really grasping at straws.
November 12th, 2005 at 3:18 pmAl Queda won’t blow up FAUX NEWS–that would be like killing the goose that laid the golden eggs.
btw–Purchase gas @ Citgo and Hess.
Citgo is all Venezuelan oil. Hess does not import from the Saudis (meaning that they don’t enrich the Saudi royal family, the collaborators that have helped the Bushies & the neocons).
November 12th, 2005 at 3:24 pmPlease refer to Daily KOS for a diary on O’Reilly’s remarks. It lists some of his sponsor’s e-mail addresses. Be proactive and let them know how offended you are by his hateful, dangerous remarks. I have e-mailed Fox and O’Reilly also.
November 12th, 2005 at 3:29 pmWell, of course, anyone with even a quarter of brain, (that might include you, RyANNe) AND who actually READ the Chronicle column by Joe Garofoli, would know that no one WANTS to see an American city attacked by the animals that want us dead. As much as I dislike the collective politics of SF, Boston, Berkley, Austin, Madison, Santa Monica, etc., NEVER would I wish such a horror on anyone! Nor do I think the majority of progressives want cons dead – well, there’s KillCon and KillFreeper4Jesus…and a few others…OK, well there are quite a few more…but some of you are not bloodthirsty. But on a serious note, I am quite sure the NRA’s lawsuit will prevail – perhaps you geniuses of the progressive movement need to understand that city charters and statutes do not trump the Constitution.
November 12th, 2005 at 3:31 pmO’Reilly and Robertson share the same vision: Walk my line or die. It must be exiting living in a self-centered, self-invented universe where up is down and magical invisible beings do your bidding. Seems like all the konservatives have drunk the kool-aid and are hallucinating wildly. Someday their trip will end… soon I hope.
November 12th, 2005 at 3:36 pmMightyHermaphrodite always reminds me of the Verdi Character Preziosilla – ‘the gypsy whore’. She’s nothing more than a conduit to the ‘war machine’, a perfect ‘male projection’ – sans phallus. Verdi created the character to make fun of authoritarian and aristocratic stupidity, MightyHermaphroidte seems to come by it naturally. How amusing…
November 12th, 2005 at 3:43 pmReligoin can make you insane. Pat Robertson is proof of that.
November 12th, 2005 at 3:44 pmMightyHermaphrodite,
You might want to remind all of the stupid republican districts who want to trump separation of church and state with 10 commandments and creationism that their ‘local statutes’ don’t trump the constitution. Funny you’ve once again ‘projected’ your own nasty habits on others without taking any accountability for them.
You’re always such a foolish and stupid hypocrite… Then again, clearly those traits are what drove you to be an idiot republican.
November 12th, 2005 at 3:50 pmWhen “Al-Reilly” declared his fatwa on San Francisco, he attacked all Californians.
He WILL apologize and grovel over these comments, within three days.
Because otherwise, he’ll never have lunch, much less broadcast, in coastal California again.
Culture Warriors from the Rightwing are about to find out how short Bush’s coattails really are.
–
Pat Robertson is NOT religious. He just washes the blood off his golden dressing gown in Jesus’ bathwater.
November 12th, 2005 at 3:55 pmHow does one excuse O’Reilly by saying “That’s not what he meant”?
November 12th, 2005 at 3:58 pmIsn’t O’Reilly an experienced commentator (I flatter him — he is actually a bully and a blowhard)and so he should be expected to know what he says, how he says it and accept the consequences if he’s crossed the line.
He should not be excused from this — he is supposed to be a professional (again I use the term loosely in his case). I understand the firefighters in S.F. are demanding that he be fired, as Coit tower is a long-standing symbol to them.
Another fatwa from the creeps at POX News. Hey, mighty — GFY.
Bill al-Reilly WILL apologize for his comments within three days.
Because otherwise he will never lunch, much less broadcast, in coastal California again.
Pat Robertson is not religious. He just washes his bloody golden gown in Jesus’ bathwater.
November 12th, 2005 at 4:00 pmAphrodite,
The sponsors of the hand-gun bill in San Francisco knew it was unconstitutional, but went ahead anyway because they wanted to place the idea in the public consciousness. Every movement begins with one voice uttering something noone else has been willing to say.
I wouldn’t be surprised if some of the other cities on your list start passing similar ordinances. I’m fairly certain a hand-gun proposal is already under consideration in Boston.
The prevelance of weaponry in this country has become, along with the expreme polarization of its citizens, the most dangerous situation for this country since the Civil War–and it’s just one of many perilous situations of our making.
November 12th, 2005 at 4:02 pmCredit where credit is due.
The KTVU anchor who held Gibson’s feet to the fire is long-time Bay Area TV personality, Ross McGowan. Here is more about Ross: http://www.ktvu.com/station/1849443/detail.html
November 12th, 2005 at 4:03 pmWow, I had no idea that Dick Cheney’s daughter was:
Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Liz Cheney
These really do only know a handful of people.
November 12th, 2005 at 4:03 pmJohn Gibson is a dimwit just like Oreilly.
November 12th, 2005 at 4:18 pm#39 – “You might want to remind all of the stupid republican districts who want to trump separation of church and state with 10 commandments and creationism that their ‘local statutes’ don’t trump the constitution.” – “Comment” by RyANNe
November 12th, 2005 at 4:19 pm****As usual, your utter lack of understanding and/or comprehension of the First Amendment is telling…pitiful!!!
Yes, you have heard of six degrees of separation? Well this cabal is about two degrees. They are all connected somehow. In a related note:
November 12th, 2005 at 4:23 pmPaul Wolfowitz is married to a woman (she was the “other woman”) from the World Bank who deals in Middle East affairs. So he, his wife and Condi Rice and Stephen Hadley and Douglas Feith can still retain their very cozy relationship.
#43 – Beaucoul – On this topic we will have to choose to disagree. I believe an armed society is a polite society. When handguns are banned, the only folks who seem to have them are the bad guys. Passing a statute which is clearly unconstitutional is grandstanding – why these folks need to sing to the choir is a mystery- sort of like declaring Berkley a “nuclear free zone”. But once again, these “progressives” feel the need to trounce on the Constitutional rights of the citizenry. PLEASE don’t tell me you’re in favour of banning “hate speech”.
November 12th, 2005 at 4:26 pmComment by mighty aphrodite
We’d get by without whatever poor, unfortunate municipality has to claim you as a resident. In time of war we must all make sacrifices.
November 12th, 2005 at 4:40 pm#51 – Abortion – Your intolerance is intolerable – and predictable.
November 12th, 2005 at 5:19 pmAphrodite,
Do you really think we live in a polite society? I think it’s pretty clear, just from this forum alone, that we don’t. This nation is seething with hatred, not just for foreigners, but internally as well.
And who are these “bad guys” you are referring to? Do you really believe there are “bad guys” out to get you? Are we to believe that you’re one of the “good guys?” Are you so stuck in the past that you can only think in terms of absolutes? Good vs. Evil? God vs. Satan? Heaven vs. Hell? Can’t you see these outmoded concepts for the laughably improbable absolutes they are?
Even the Free Speech amendment, as sacrosanct as it is, has its qualifications and limitations as prescribed by practicality. It’s time that the constituional right to bear arms faces some practical limitations as well.
November 12th, 2005 at 5:45 pmMightyWhacko,
An armed society is a criminal society. Like ALL republican values, your ‘opinion’ is based on self delusions and irrational hysteria. The facts refute your ignorance and your idiocy.
The firearm homicide rate for children under 15 years of age is 16 times higher in the United States than in 25 other industrialized countries combined. Among those ages 15 to 24, the U.S. firearm homicide rate is 5times higher than in neighboring Canada and 30times higher than in Japan, and the firearm homicide rate for the 15- to 24-year-old age group increased 158 percent during the 10-year period from 1984 to 1993 (see figure 4). This contrasts with a 19-percent decline in gun-related homicides for those 25 and older. A teenager in the United States today is more likely to die of a gunshot wound than from all the “natural” causes of death combined.4
November 12th, 2005 at 6:07 pmI love it everytime the Christian right open their mouth. Most intelligent people know that Christianity is a lot of superstitious BULLSHIT and that given enough rope they will eventually hang themselves. They constantly are blabbing about how Christianity is the basis for morality and that Jesus is this loving ghost up in the sky who is the answer to societies ills.
November 12th, 2005 at 6:08 pmWhat is laughable is that the mouth pieces for this wonderful religion spew nothing but hate and anger. Years ago while camping in the Adirondack Mts. I saw some grafetti on the wall in an outhouse that is perfect for the mantra of Christianity. It said, “support mental health or I’ll kill you.”
Can I hear an AMEN or AWOMEN! Glory! Glory!
Nor do I think the majority of progressives want cons dead –
Of course not, we’d rather you just left the country of your own free will, go to your own private Jonestown and drink the kool-aid laced with cyanide like all the good wingnuts do. Then we don’t have to clean up the mess you leave, like at Waco.
well, there’s KillCon and KillFreeper4Jesus…and a few others…OK, well there are quite a few more…
Yeah, there are. More than you know, but I think you are getting a hint.
Read it and weep, crypto-fascist skank
“Most worrisome for the White House: the base seems to be cracking. When asked whether anyone in the administration “acted unethically” in the case involving the leak of CIA agent Valerie Plame’s name, a 54-percent majority of Americans said they did – and 30 percent of Republicans said they did. And 45 percent of Americans believe someone in the “Bush administration broke the law and acted criminally” – including 22 percent of Republicans.”
There it is! The President has officially lost the country.
but some of you are not bloodthirsty.
We aren’t the bloodthirsty ones, we are just running out of patience with your bullshit.
But on a serious note, I am quite sure the NRA’s lawsuit will prevail – perhaps you geniuses of the progressive movement need to understand that city charters and statutes do not trump the Constitution.
Yeah, sure. That worked so well in NYC, (Sullivan Act) and D.C. No wait… it didn’t. Why? Because in all these years, the SCOTUS has yet to agree with the NRA’s misreading of the Constitution. And speaking of the Constitution… which says nothing about gays marrying, (although why anyone, gay or straight would want to get married, a ridiculous religious ceremony older than the crypto-fascist skank herself, is beynd me). Civil unions for tax puposes and what not works for me.
Gay rights opponent defeated by… a gay (and in Ohio)!
Talk about poetic justice. A LOT of religious right sympathizers lost elections around the country, including this one in Ohio:
CLEVELAND HEIGHTS, Ohio – A city council member who fought against the nation’s first voter-approved domestic partner registry lost a bid for re-election to a candidate who is openly gay.
The Rev. Jimmie Hicks Jr. lost Tuesday’s election to Mark Tumeo.
Hicks had sued to block the creation the city’s domestic partner registry. The registry, which recognizes gay and unmarried heterosexual couples but gives no legal status or marriage rights, had been approved by voters in 2003 and ruled constitutional by a Cuyahoga County judge….
Hicks said Wednesday his battle “was political suicide.”
Did you catch that? A religious right drone says that pushing anti-gay policies is now “political suicide.” That is a big deal. And that speaks volumes about how the country has changed in only the past few years.
We don’t need to kill you. You commit political suicide all by yourself. We just aim to make sure you stay dead this time, for good. We owe it to future generations of Americans, and the world.
November 12th, 2005 at 6:59 pmActually, nothing much will change. Municipalities that want to restrict weapons in some way will be able to, like they always have, since the days of Wyatt Earp and Dodge City. “What”, you say? Yeah, Wyatt Earp. He was pro gun control, dumbass. What do you think the shoot out at the OK Corral was about? It was about compliance with the local ordinace re: wearing guns within the city limits, except this was in Tombstone, but Dodge City had a similar ordinance. Personally, I have no illusions about restrictive gun laws reducing gun violence when enacted piecemeal in this fashion, and I happen to have a more relaxed view of the second amendment than the SCOTUS, but the concealed carry laws and shoot first and ask questions later laws in FLA and other densely populated areas has already cost the life of one undercver or off duty cop, shot by another undercver or off duty cop. Those laws are as stupid as too restrictive and piecemeal gun laws.
November 12th, 2005 at 7:17 pmAfter a spirited discussion about Mr. O’Reilly following this morning’s grace, Sister Berneeta said it best, “God don’t like ugly.†She then followed that statement with a quick snap of her fingers to punctuate the seriousness of her comment. Of course, no right-thinking person of God could support a call to an enemy to destroy San Francisco, the City by the Bay, one of America’s most beautiful cities, a City filled with a diverse culture of creatures who are all of God’s children no matter what we may feel about their personal life choices. No child of God should be recruited to kill and maim. Murder and war are never the answer. Any who defend such murder and war, walk hand and hand with the devil. San Franciscans did right by God by saying no to military recruiting, and the war, murder and torture that so sadly accompany such actions. Please remember, God don’t like ugly! Go forward in love. And Praise the Lord!
November 12th, 2005 at 7:26 pmJebus… progressives are supposed to be polite and tolerant, what’s with the cursing and bashing and threatening and insulting? It’s immature and undermines your own position. Aphrodite has remained calm, and to an unbiased observer it’s a lot more likely to win people to her side in the fact of the abusiveness from the other side.
And this is from a hardcore progressive, here. Don’t you guys realize that ranting and raving and stooping to personal attack is the quickest way to lose a debate short of Godwin’s Law?
And beyond that, it’s no way to treat a woman.
November 12th, 2005 at 10:18 pmWell now, they’ve done it again,Fauxnews

“Who does this Gibson think he is?”
November 13th, 2005 at 12:15 pmMy God, it’s so painfully obvious.
Look up “Republican Ass-Kisser” in the
dictionary and you’ll see Gibson’s picture
nest to it…..
Dear Mr. OReilly has forgotten the economics of our nation: the Bay Area (San Francisco et al) is the largest tax base in the country… he should not talk poorly of those that are not only supplying the income for this outrageous criminal war, but also for the bridge in Alaska that goes nowhere and all those other corrupt [politcal] payoffs.
i do agree with him: CA should go its own way and take its money with it(and 20% of the world economy) (along with the other blue states that account for over 70% of the nation’s tax base! –) and then, we’ll see how long that war will last and whether they can afford all that pork; i.e. bridges in Alaska that are unnecessary. Frankly, the ‘remaining’ USA would be a third world country without us.
By the way ‘Bill” – my home again was voted the world’s favorite city. I think [he] has Coit Tower envy.
November 13th, 2005 at 2:01 pm#59 – “And Kitty, MightyHermaphrodite uses ’sports lingo’ and other language that I’ve never seen any biological woman use. She’s clearly a personna and not a ‘real’ woman.
Comment by Ryan Neat — November 12, 2005 @ 10:29 pm”
*****RyANNe – I apologize if you get lost in sports “lingo” – having sons who PARTICIPATE in team sports will do that to a Mom!! But of course, that concept may be foriegn to you, who knew??!!
Beaucol – Don’t make the mistake RyANNe continually makes and leap to conclusions. I understand mitigating circumstances and agree with the concept and application. I see the “bad guys” as domestic criminals (i.e. robbers, murderers, rapists, pedophiles, gang bangers, etc.) and certain foriegn terrorists. Regarding the 1st Amendment, I understand the limitations to speech (incitement of violence, etc.) but I am tired of left “forgetting” they are NOT guaranteed the RIGHT not to be offended – we on the right (an apt metephor) are told to buck up and ignore filth and gratuitous violence as a means of “expression”. I suggest you do the same and CELEBRATE our differences – how’s that for diversity???
November 13th, 2005 at 3:53 pmAbort A Freepus 4 Christ thinks I “sound like a crypto or christo-fascist getting nervous”, and supports the Muse in her use of Al-Qaeda to stifle free speech in America. John the Elder is concerned that the government won’t take care of me in my old age. Allow me to educate you all.
As a partisan Republican, I support the politics of my party. As a thinking American, I make my own decisions without the government or my political party, or any religious leader telling me how to think. It’s one of the great things about a democracy, you think freely. As John’s concern about my old age, as a working American I have planned carefully for my own retirement without giving consideration to how the government might help me. More on that below. Since you’ve collectively chosen to question my personal views, I’ll share them with you as well.
I’m not a crypto or christo-fascist. In fact, I’m not a very big fan of organized religion. I think it has done more harm than good when used by governments and/or by large religious institutions. I’m happy that Americans can practice the religion of their choice as they see fit, but I’m not really interested in hearing about people religion in the public square. I think it is personal, and should be celebrated and practiced privately.
As for getting my news from Fox, I’m a former reporter that did my own news gathering and investigating. While I no longer have an Associated Press machine or a UPI wire in my office, I try to read at least 4 papers a day, including the New York Times, the New York Post, and two local papers. I find that by reading the same story in a variety of news outlets, I’m able to more readily separate the news from the opinions.
As for Social Security, I’ve never understood the desire by my party to privatize the investment. To me, it’s just legalized gambling. I know very well that if someone’s private investment fails, there will be enough liberals around to demand that the government make up the lost money.
The Clinton Administration turned a blind eye towards Wall Street for 8 years, as people’s pensions disappeared due to the greed of corporate crooks. Thankfully, the Bush Administration doesn’t condone that type of criminality, and SEC investigations have helped slow Wall Street’s chicanery. Here in New York, we have a resourceful and capable State Attorney General who has vigorously prosecuted Wall Street cheats under the relevant state laws. He’s a Democrat, but from where I stand, he’s doing the job well and that’s what counts.
Now, since you understand where I am on the issues you’ve chosen to criticize me about, what do you say we engage in some meaningful dialogue the issues of the day?
November 13th, 2005 at 4:52 pmThank you, Kitty – you have restored my faith in web progressives. My four sets of very (!!!) progressive neighbors are very sweet and kind – we simply have different opinions on many – but NOT ALL issues! Our little street is a great microcosym of national politics.
Beaucol – I did not respond to you re: polite society. You are absolutely right – I think societies’ manners have been sliding downhill for 40 years. I think there are several factors contributing to this current state of poor manners and vulgarity:
a.) “buddy parents” – these are parents who want, at ALL costs, to be friends with their kids. I think kids have plenty of friends – they need parents to guide them to responsible adulthood
b.) a lack of respect for adults that started when children began addressing adults by their first names – they are not peers.
There are more but I must run!!!
November 13th, 2005 at 7:55 pmAl-Reilly has also just fliipped off the Minority Leader, a not unpowerful San Franciscan.
Career Destruction in Progress.
Since he’s decided to stiff-upper-lip it, he may hold out for as much as two weeks, before he grovels and apologizes for his asinine existence.
Of COURSE he didn’t mean it. He meant that his ass vibrator reminded him of Coit Tower, and he fantasizes about Bin Laden pulling on his hair.
November 13th, 2005 at 8:38 pmWho is going to read all that stuff Paul?!?!!
Comment sections are not a place to post a book in and should only be used for short and to the point remarks.
November 14th, 2005 at 2:36 amWhat no one seems to get is that Gibson’s reference of “animosity towards Christians” is a deflection. Animosity towards charismatic fundamentalist cults wrapped within the appearance of a Christian church would be more accurate.
November 14th, 2005 at 7:17 amBad manners, Ryan? That puts it lightly. She makes little sense and her posts are all over the place. They aren’t very cohesive and always include meaningless or over the top marks, such as (!!!). In her attempt at intelligence for us, she hasn’t learned one of the most valuable lessons an author can learn; less is more.
Too much frilly crap takes away from the substance of an argument. Of course, if there is no substance, like when you forgot to read your assignment in high school, you just make crap up off the fly and try to baffle with the extras.
Aphro proves this daily. Yet, keeps comin’ back. I really hope “on the fencers” (of which there are less and less) come here to see for themselves how bad people can be. Keep posting for all to see, Aphro.
November 14th, 2005 at 10:47 am#64 to MightyFarRighty, You say the left tells you that you should just put up with violence and foul language from them. But what about Scooter’s lame and laughable attempt at writting a pornographic novel? In it he talks about a young girl being put in a cage with a bear that was trained to “couple with her”,with the intention of keeping her from falling in love with one of her johns. Yuk. And Bill O’Reilly”s equaly stupid porn book, and even Lynne Cheney herself wrote a thrilling tale of lesbian love. Um….I think I just threw up in my mouth a little…. Mighty, you are a hypocrite. OOOHHH What a surprise!!
November 14th, 2005 at 11:15 am$72 – “But what about Scooter’s lame and laughable attempt at writting a pornographic novel?” Comment by Crya”
**** I didn’t buy Scooter’s book – I’m not surprised you did.
PP- I realize you’re about as progressive as a flat tire…on a Prius.
November 14th, 2005 at 2:17 pmFellahs! Be ye hefty lefty or tightie rightie, personal attacks are beneath contempt EVEN when the other guy does it first. EVEN when he does it over and over. It’s about principle, and so is no different a matter than whether to employ torture. The question is NOT whether the other guy deserves to be insulted. The question is ONLY whether I will stoop so low as to insult him. It’s my behavior. That’s what I have control over. So that is where I apply principle. NOT to you and your mush-headed, kneejerk, running-dog, knee-jerk, bleeding heart, dittoheaded and generally deficient person. I’m not your judge. I am ONLY the custodian of principle insofar as it governs my actions without exception. Doodyhead.
November 14th, 2005 at 4:21 pm#69 – “MightyHermaphrodite reminds me of the parents on the nanny TV shows…My guess is that she prefers to substitute beating her children as the ‘proper parenting’ technique.” Comment by RyANNe
November 14th, 2005 at 4:30 pm****RyANNe, My little Repubs are usually such goo kids, I don’t waste my time watching “modern” parents on TV get led around by their self-made brats. Are you “projecting” when you guess how I discipline my children. A beating??? What did “Mom” do – use a wire hanger on you?? If so, this explains alot!!!
you know, if you don’t agree with fox, stop watching it. every time you tune in and react, you’re helping to drive up their visibility, which in turn helps their ratings. STOP WATCHING FOX!!!
November 14th, 2005 at 4:41 pmYou’ve got to hand it to O’Reilly — he stands by what he said. He’s an idiot, and what he said was patently insane, but he’s not backing down. Wouldn’t it be nice if the Democratic leadership could find it within themselves to start saying “controversial” things (like the truth — see also: John Edwards admission) that might actually hold this administration’s feet to the fire, without getting all mamby-pamby about, retracting statements, etc. Have you noticed that the Dems are only now starting to make a stink about any of the progressive issues we care about? Rest assured it’s only because they can sense the wind shifting. Where the hell were they two years ago? Where was the press, better yet, whose job it is to look into this stuff? Sorry, but I’m pissed….
November 14th, 2005 at 4:53 pmAnyway, I’m joining the Green Party, the only party that truly represents and STANDS BY a progressive agenda.
#65 — Deke, you’re the kind of conservative that is unfortunately getting a bad name from the neo-con blowhards in the media. Not that you and I would agree on every issue, or any issue, but I greatly respect your keeping the discussion civilized. Baselessly attacking people is something that I think we all agree is one of O’Reilly’s greatest shortcomings. OK, that and the lying. Anyway, thanks.
November 14th, 2005 at 5:36 pmEddie – I agree – the Greens are a great place for progressives! Please work hard and take as many Dems with you for that party of the people. (You have to love a party who nominates a guy named Jello Biafra.)
November 14th, 2005 at 5:59 pm“But that’s why they are conservatives. At least the rest of us (progressives, liberals, moderates or some hybrid thereof) can be honest when one of our own says or does something wrong. Comment by big dave from queens — November 12, 2005 @ 3:12 pm ”
November 14th, 2005 at 6:08 pm******* When???
O’Reilly is due his right to free speech just like Ward Churchill, Pat Robertson, Jimmy Carter, Nambala and so on. You cannot support the reasoning of “some” speech and not others. I don’t care for most radical statements but understand the right to make them. I can turn the channel, vote them out of office, ban websites on my PC’s and teach my children how not to allow themselves to be brainwashed by the media or their teachers at school. It’s hypocritical to single out and attack speech you don’t like. Period.
November 15th, 2005 at 9:25 amDeke—I know someone else (Edie #79) just praised for your thinking. I would also like to commend you and in all seriousness, tell u that you give me hope. WHY? I grew up in a christian home, and I don’t think like the rest of the conservative zealots. It seems that these so-called people of faith are increasingly basing everything on faith, forgetting the greatest gift God gave us above all his creation; the power to think and rationalize things. Like Edie said, we may not agree on everything, but I appreciate your comments. Christian (Conservative) Zealots are no better than the Talibans or suicide bombers whose faith drives them to believe that blowing up people in name of Allah will get them to heaven.
November 15th, 2005 at 10:05 amIsn’t Ollielly the one who is always rantin and raving about the “folks” speaking out and making the decisions for their states?
Well, Bill – the folks in SF spoke – and they simply don’t want Military recruiting in their public schools and colleges – and it has NOTHING to do with preventing terrorism. The military sure didn’t prevent 9/11 – and they certainly won’t prevent another attack. Our intelligence agencies – the FBI, the CIA, and local law enforcement are responsible for that – not 18 year old grunts out of highschool who are convinced they can have their college paid for while they go and fight a war in Iraq that should have never been waged.
And what would posses a man to even so much as “scarcastically” comment about the destruction of one of his own cities after the devestation we saw on 9/11. Can you imagine the outcry if Howard dean made the same charge against Texas?
This was bound to happen – the right wing of the country have had their run, but the tide is turning and the “folks” are starting to get it – from the tragedy of 2000 deaths in a misguided and un-neccessary war, to the laughably absurd comments of the likes of Mr. Number ONE – Bill Orielly – a God loving man who “jokingly” calls for the vengefull destruction of a major US city because it’s citizens demontstrated exactly what it is that our soldiers are supposedly dying for in Iraq – democratic freedom.
Now “Thats” rediculous.
And here, we have
November 15th, 2005 at 11:01 amJust more Nazi’s covering for more Nazi’s. I love it that these are the people that call themselves Conservative Christians. More like mindless pagans if you ask me! WAKE UP, AMERICA! EVIL MEN ARE IN CHARGE!!!
November 15th, 2005 at 5:00 pmHmmm, I’m noticing an interesting trend here. Eddie D., Chi-Chi, Apixie in Ohio all seem to be interested in issue discussion as oppossed to venal personal attacks. If we could teach this to the members of the House and Senate, along with members of the Executive Branch, and members of the Press Corps, imagine the level of discourse we could have as a nation!
November 15th, 2005 at 5:49 pmDO SOMETHING – Deny Clear Channel’s license renewal!
Go to http://www.bethemedia.org to file an Informal Objection to Clear Channel’s radio station license renewal for KNEW-910AM – the station that broadcasts Michael Savage and Bill O’Reilly in San Francisco.
For convenience, I created some boilerplate ‘informal objections’ for people to send in to the FCC, specifically regarding Bill O’Reilly’s anti-American hate speech.
However, these need to be filed BEFORE DECEMBER 1, 2005.
Go to http://www.bethemedia.org now!
November 16th, 2005 at 2:22 pm#84 zach- I didn’t get the memo….who is deciding what is evil? I’ll wait for the list so I know how to vote…..
November 18th, 2005 at 4:18 pmDavid- I like the idea of hate speech laws but I’m trying to find out how I know something was said with the intention of hate…..WE NEED TO HIRE MIND READERS TOO?…..there goes the budget…..
Next thing you know Bill O’Barfy will be saying, “I was KIDDING!!” Like that would make it better. Ann Coulter also clearly must be joking in her horrible books and tv appearances. The order from on high was most certainly along the lines of ‘make fun of the left! as often as possible. Malign and impugn, plant the seeds of hate in minds full of fear. That’s how to control the public.’ The sad thing about spouting crap is they begin to believe it; their world is like Bush’s: full of brown nosing sycophants. Their talking points are based on lies, simply to manipulate us.
November 20th, 2005 at 4:14 pmcheyenne- no one TRIES to make fun of the left…it’s just so easy and obvious it’s impossible to resist…and yes I DO feel guilty…..
November 26th, 2005 at 3:11 amIf you make fun of the left, they will cancel your right to free expression. See #86 I’ll be plonked just for noting it.

January 18th, 2006 at 4:34 pm[...] Later that week, fellow Fox News anchorman John Gibson appeared on KTVU, the Bay Area’s Fox affiliate on “KTVU Mornings on Fox 2″ with Ross McGowan. In essence, Gibson brushed off what O’Reilly had said and claimed he was “sure that’s not what he meant” by inviting terrorists to strike San Francisco. ROSS McGOWAN: You don’t have to make any excuses for your colleague Bill O’Reilly, but on the front page of the [San Francisco] Chronicle today, he talks about if al-Qaeda comes into San Francisco and blows it up, in essence, who cares? Go al-Qaeda, blow up Coit Tower. That’s hateful talk. It’s irresponsible. You can make fun of voting on a gun issue. You can make fun of San Francisco for keeping the military out of recruiting. But you can’t say al-Qaeda, go get them. JOHN GIBSON: I can’t imagine Bill meant that. He goes to San Francisco all the time. He does shows from there. He has a good time there. I know he loves the city. I’m sure that’s not what he meant. [...]
