More Clues About Bush Involvement In CIA Leak

The Washington Post’s write-up today of the CIA leak investigation raises more serious questions about the involvement of President Bush and Vice President Cheney. In an article entitled, “Libby May Have Tried to Mask Cheney’s Role,” the Post writes:

In the opening days of the CIA leak investigation in early October 2003, FBI agents working the case already had in their possession a wealth of valuable evidence. There were White House phone and visitor logs, which clearly documented the administration’s contacts with reporters.

And they had something that law enforcement officials would later describe as their “guidebook” for the opening phase of the investigation: the daily, diary-like notes compiled by I. Lewis “Scooter” Libby, then Vice President Cheney’s chief of staff, that chronicled crucial events inside the White House in the weeks before the identity of CIA operative Valerie Plame was publicly disclosed.

While the article is explicit about the idea that Cheney may have played a larger role in the leak, the tie to Bush is not as apparent. There are at least two damaging pieces of information as they relate to the president.

First, President Bush was stating in early October 2003 that he didn’t “know if we’re going to find out the senior administration official” who leaked Plame’s identity. That statement now deserves greater scrutiny in light of evidence that the White House was presumably in possession of, or at least had knowledge of, a “guidebook” (i.e. Libby’s notes) that gave strong clues as to who leaked.

Second, on October 7, 2003, Bush answered a journalist’s question about the leak by stating, “how many sources have you had that’s leaked information that you’ve exposed or have been exposed? Probably none.” A week later, on October 14, 2003, Libby met with FBI investigators and told them a false story about how he first learned of Plame’s identity from reporters. In a case which would later hinge upon the accounts of reporters — who as Fitzgerald described were “eyewitness[es] to the crime” — it is interesting that Bush would highlight journalists’ historical disinclination for revealing sources. To drive home his point, Bush said to the journalists, “you do a very good job of protecting the leakers.” Was he not-so-subtly suggesting that they continue doing a “very good job”?

You can't even get Cheney involved in this thing, and you are dreaming of wrapping Bush up in it too?

Don't you guys ever get tired of dreaming?

There was nothing wrong with Cheney disclosing the information to Libby, and Libby got it from many other sources within the government, including the CIA.

So why are you still talking about Cheney and Bush? California dreaming.......

Anyone wonder why Libby went down so easily? Have you ever watched a wildlife documentary on PBS or the like? You know when you watch the pride of lions stalking the herd of wilder beast and when one is singled out they pounce. Thing is the wilder beast never struggles, it just lays there to be eaten. People who know alot more than me on this matter say that when it is caught the wilder beast will just go into shock, not struggle, and die. It does this to protect the rest of the herd. The lions will be busy with this animal and temporarily forget about the others. I now believe that this is exactly what happened with I. Lewis Libby. Libby was a trap, a honeypot, a lay. Fitzgerald was set up and we were suckers

"We don't want the smoking gun to be a mushroom cloud over one of our cities." - or something to that effect was uttered by VP Cheney and NSA Condi Rice too many times in the run up to this "preemptive strike" to warrant anything less than a full-blown Congressional investigation into how this Administration hyped intelligence and sold it to Congressional leaders and the American people.

The above rhetoric is so extreme to be uttered by a national leader that to state such an observation, one would think that the intelligence would be uncompromisingly verifiable. Since we now know that such intelligence wasn't so, we need to know why our Executive leaders felt such a need to utter such an extreme scenerio. Me thinkst such extreme rhetoric was being spewed upon the American people to effect what the Downing Street Memo suggests - that this Administration's agenda to invade Iraq drove the Bush Administration to massage the intelligence to fit the agenda.

I am gravely concerned that the American people have been led astray by the ambitions of neocon fools whose world view is too naive to be effective. And, as a consequence, we now find ourselves in a miserable state of war that has no disernable positive outcome in sight.

This is a big yes to everyone who tries to make light of the fine mess Mr. Bush and Company has gotten us into. This self-proclaimed "uniter" has seriously divided not only our own nation and political discourse, he has also divided our world of "difference" into a multitude of potential terrorist actions, or at a minimum, social unrest.

YES, the American people want a process by which we can better understand the fine mess we are now in.

YES, the American people want to hold this Administration accountable for any wrongs it has committed - especially if those wrongs pushed us to engage in the now bankrupt foreign policy of "preemptive strike."

And YES, we will hold anyone who dismisses our wants as politics accountable during the '06 and '08 elections. -Kevo

  15. Zwack Says:

Seixon said "So why are you still talking about Cheney and Bush? California dreaming……."

Is that different from Norwegian dreaming? You may be amazed to learn that not all people who disagree with the Bush administration live in California.

While I would agree that there is not enough conclusive legal evidence against Bush, it is nice that someone is pointing out some of the inconsistencies in his actions.

Having looked at your blog, and seen such wonderfully non-biased sites linked on your blogroll as Little Green Fascists, I can guess exactly where you are coming from. I would disagree with your use of the phrase constructive criticism as well. I read the first article and it had nothing constructive in it. It was all just criticism. Constructive Criticism usually has something... Constructive about it.

    Getting backon topic...

"There was nothing wrong with Cheney disclosing the information to Libby, and Libby got it from many other sources within the government, including the CIA."

There was nothing wrong with someone with the appropriate security clearance passing information to someone else with appropriate security clearance. You are correct. The problem is not "where Libby heard it" but "what Libby did with it, and why". If Bush and Cheney knew that Libby was going to leak classified information to the press to hurt someone they regarded as a rival, then that is wrong (conspiracy). If they found out after the fact and tried to protect him then that is also wrong (obstruction of justice). So, unless they are totally innocent and had nothing to do with the leak, and no knowledge of the leak then they are guilty of something related to the leak.

If there is insufficient evidence then they will get away with it. If evidence is found, I hope that they are appropriately punished.

I was watching the House discussions on TV the other day, because YES they do broadcast them.

There was a Congress man, and OH YEAH it was a Republican. It was the Republican Congress man for Pennsylvania.

He was holding a press conference about the "Cover up" of 9/11. Those were his exact words. He was tired of information from the WH being hidden and people who had knowledge of the incident being gaged. He had documents that showed information was produced while the producers of the information were continuously stating that no such information was ever created.

He had stated that "I have instructed the IG to begin a criminal investigation into 9/11." So Bush supporters, get ready for your house of cards to come crumbling down very soon, and it is not just the Democrats who now think that there is a "Cover up" over 9/11.

    Illmethinks,
I agree with your statement up until you say Fitzgerald was had. He can only do so much as a prosecutor. He has to bring before the jury a case he can procecute. He can't invent evidence but must use what is before him.

  25. Seixon Says:

    Zwack,

There was no inconsistencies in Bush's actions. That's just the thing. We don't have any evidence to suggest that Cheney or Bush knew anything about what Libby was doing. In fact, if Libby really was out to do something illegal, he would make sure that his bosses were out of the loop so that they would not be affected by it.

It seems that Cheney has testified truthfully to the grand jury that he told Libby what he told him. So this whole thread is completely useless and just testament to the liberal dreaming of executing Bush and taking over the White House.

Little Green Fascists? Look, I have many different blogs on my blogroll, so just picking out one of them isn't very conclusive. I'd also ask why you call them that. Do you call everyone who disagrees with your politics fascists? Not very civil.

My blogroll may have mostly conservative blogs on there, but that is because as a moderate, they are the only ones saying anything sane at the current time in politics. The Democrats have gone completely off the hinges and make up conspiracy theory after conspiracy theory, lose election after election, and never get it! They just keep doing the same thing wrong over and over and never learn. I voted for Gore in 2000, and I would really like to see a Democratic Congress for domestic policy reasons.

But the Left has taken over the Democratic Party completely, and all these lies about Bush and the Republicans, the military, the war in Iraq: I just don't have any patience for such.

As a moderate, I'm not interested in blogs that always blame America first, and never seem to recognize true evils in the world. Exaggerate wrongdoing by Americans as if it were the apocalypse, and completely ignoring wrongdoing of others that is far more grievous.

I hate all the lying and posing on both sides of the political spectrum, but the fact remains that the Democrats have much more reason to lie because they don't have any power. Demagogues, by definition, aren't in power, since they seek it. The Democrats also have virtually nothing to lose by lying, while the Republicans and the administration does.

Just based on these facts alone, it is easy to see why the Left and the Democrats churn out lie after lie, conspiracy theory after conspiracy theory, and mislead on just about every issue imaginable. That doesn't mean that the Republicans don't do this, but being in power, they don't have to. They have the power. Lying will only get them in trouble, and get them out of power. So if they are going to lie, they have to do it carefully and intelligently.

I find myself saying why did they say that? What are their motives. We know for a fact that what they are telling us is not what they are truly up to.

Just like anyone saying: I am a Christian.....blah blah blah......

Beware, if they have to qualify anything with "I am a Christian" then they are getting ready to nullify that statement with the next.

True Christians prove they are Christians, they don't have to tell you so that you will know. They illustrate it by their actions.

So, Pat Robertson, GW dumbya, cheezycheeney.... you are ALL BUSTED!

I love how the term "fascist" is being tossed around here like it was a frisbee. Such as:

Did you see the Atlanta Hawks vs. Green Bay game today. Every time the camera showed the sidelines it was lined with cops. Atlanta is a fascist city for sure. I’ve yet to see that kind of paranoia at any other football stadium.

OMG! Security personnel! We don't want any of that! Susan, go read up on what fascism really is. You clearly have no clue and only seek to use loaded words where ever you go to seem as if you have something important to say.

  32. Acksyn_JAcksyn Says:

    http://www.amconmag.com/2005/2005_10_24/cover.html

The 15-month proconsulship of the CPA disbursed nearly $20 billion, two-thirds of it in cash, most of which came from the Development Fund for Iraq that had replaced the UN Oil for Food Program and from frozen and seized Iraqi assets. Most of the money was flown into Iraq on C-130s in huge plastic shrink-wrapped pallets holding 40 “cashpaks,” each cashpak having $1.6 million in $100 bills. Twelve billion dollars moved that way between May 2003 and June 2004, drawn from accounts administered by the New York Federal Reserve Bank. The $100 bills weighed an estimated 363 tons.

Once in Iraq, there was virtually no accountability over how the money was spent. There was also considerable money “off the books,” including as much as $4 billion from illegal oil exports. The CPA and the Iraqi State Oil Marketing Board, which it controlled, made a deliberate decision not to record or “meter” oil exports, an invitation to wholesale fraud and black marketeering.

Thus the country was awash in unaccountable money. British sources report that the CPA contracts that were not handed out to cronies were sold to the highest bidder, with bribes as high as $300,000 being demanded for particularly lucrative reconstruction contracts.

In the first place, most advertising agencies are beyond the means of the small to medium business owner. In the second place, who really cares what magazine and/or newspaper editors think. Using the internet, the little guy can distribute a news or feature story to a highly targeted local, regional, national or international audience without their assistance. What's more, if they know what they're doing, the copy they write normally ends up generating continuing readership because most it ends up getting and holding top search engine placement for six months or more.

I had a very good reason for picking LGF and calling it Little Green Fascists... I read a bunch of postings on there once, without knowing anything about the blog or who ran it or what their political opinions were. They were calmly discussing the "Palestinian Problem" and what should be done about it.

Suggestions varied from tactical nukes, to a massacre of every non-Israeli living in the West Bank and the Gaza strip. There were no "moderate" voices raised. All there was was a bunch of people saying that "Genocide was the only solution"... There was no hint of Irony or Sarcasm anywhere in the postings. They just felt that killing everyone they had decided that they didn't like was the only way forward. How do you feel about those "moderate" proposals?

HAve you ever heard "Beyond the Fringe"? In particular the "America" sketch always strikes me as being too true.

"Like us, the Americans have two political parties, the Republicans, who are like our Conservative Party, and the Democrats, who are like our Conservative Party!"

As a Brit living in America this is too true. What you call the Left is moderate to most of the rest of the world.

The attack mode is standard policy for all those type of wack-o-reich-wing types. They pretend to be civil, but are clearly projecting their own feelings of wrong onto others. Psych 101. Anyone with a basic knowledge of human behavior knows the signs to look for.

That smirking chimp in the WH is pure evil. As a little boy he tortured little animals with fireworks. As you know most little boys that do that type of thing don't grow up to be pResident, they grow up to be serial killers. Either way, they grow up the same.

A person that kills 2-40 is called a serial killer. A person in power that murders tens of thousands is called a leader. Go figure.

  38. Seixon Says:

    Zwack,

You aren't able to differentiate between the actual blog, LGF, and the comments on the blog, apparently. Just look at this blog here, ThinkProgress. You have me coming in here trying to have a reasonable debate, and people just start calling me Nazi, fascist, KKK, and I read some calling for the execution of Bush and others.

Please, don't tell me that this isn't as extreme as the commenting at LGF. That still has nothing to do with the blog LGF itself. Of course it attracts commenters that are a bit on the fringe of the right, but blogs like this one attract the same thing from the opposite side.

Does that warrant me in calling ThinkProgress "Think Fascist Progress"? Of course not.

I mean seriously, if we go to DailyKos and Democratic Underground, tell me, please tell me, that you don't find the same kind of appalling comments as you do on LGF. You are kidding yourself. It has nothing to do with LGF itself, and you know it.

    mighty aphrodite,

You must have been talking about yourself and the people attacking me on this blog when you said:

They are wrong, they know they are wrong, but when someone points this out in any fashion they go into attack mode.

The problem is, I haven't attacked anyone. You guys attacked me once I set foot on this blog. Doesn't that mean that you are wrong, and you know you are wrong, and when I pointed it out, all of you started attacking me with ad hominem?

I never did that towards you guys. You attacked me.

That smirking chimp in the WH is pure evil. As a little boy he tortured little animals with fireworks. As you know most little boys that do that type of thing don’t grow up to be pResident, they grow up to be serial killers.

So now you are writing Bush's biography for him without knowing the slightest thing about his childhood? Gee, how... intellectual.

Ehm... Hans Blix is not even American. LOL. Joe Wilson hasn't been a Republican for a long time now. I don't know about the others, but you have just gotten two of them wrong. I wouldn't be surprised if you got a few more of them wrong as well. Hans Blix, a Swede, is suddenly an American patriot.

Yeah, I guess facts don't mean much when you are trying to make a farce of a statement...

I don't remember the Bush administration attacking Scott Ritter, the wannabe child-molester. Shinseki wasn't attacked either, he resigned honorably. Richard Clarke and Joe Wilson have lied their asses off for partisan purposes.

When you pretend that only one side is "evil", you are only fooling yourself. There are transparently partistan hacks on both sides, not just one.

Make no mistake, a new Civil War is afoot and it ain’t just in Iraq!

Yeah, overthrow the duly elected government of the USA. How... democratic!

You spout your lies, and long drawn out tripe and you actually think people read your insane posts filled with the rantings of a biggot, fascist shrubite talking points/inaccuracies, but you are mistaken. Some may respond when they have had enough of your tripe, but we don't actually think you offer anything of value here.

So, like someone else said earlier about you... you are truly simple and pathetic.

  42. Randy Says:

I have seen items documenting his torture of animals and love of abuse.

He also is dislexic, paranoid, and has bouts of temper that border on insanity.

He is a pathetic excuse for an American.

    CHIMPEACH NOW.

  43. Elke Hollic Says:

Impeach the murdering bastards that send our youth to their deaths for their oil profits.

Impeach the murdering bastards that have bankrupted the treasury.

Impeach the murdering bastards that make the rich richer and the poor dumber and more poor.

The dumbing down of America is NOT complete, and it should end now.

  44. Elke Hollic Says:

Isn't Ahnold Swartnater (the gropeanator) Austrian?

Yet sextongs listens to him and probably wishes his father had been an actual Nazi brownshirt too.

  45. David Venhuizen Says:

The whole thing, of course, is based upon the questionable premise that the U.S. "should" be the predominant power in the world. THAT is the thing you should be going after the Bush Mob on, not some piddling leak case. The relevant question is, who's gonna disarm us?

    THE MOB by David Venhuizen

The Bushy-tailed Mobster came ‘round here
    Talking of his need
I said no wait a minute, man
You’ve got need mixed up with greed
Come on, he said, there’s a madman loose
    Everybody get on my bus
I looked back at the only madman I could see
Said tell me, who’s gonna disarm US?

    CHORUS
Who’s gonna disarm us, my friend?
When the world says don’t bomb—discuss
So when the Bushy-tailed Mobster kicks up his next fuss
Tell me, who’s gonna disarm US?
