BREAKING: Chalabi Meets with Cheney & Rumsfeld; White House Bans Photos, Press Access

The Associated Press is reporting that Vice President Dick Cheney and Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld met today with Ahmad Chalabi, the discredited neocon darling currently under FBI investigation for allegedly passing U.S. secrets to Iran:

Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld discussed Iraqi security and political developments on Monday with Ahmad Chalabi, the former Iraqi exile tainted by the since-discredited claims that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction. [...]

Chalabi met later with Vice President Dick Cheney, and he also had talks with Robert Zoellick, the deputy secretary of state.

Not surprisingly, Cheney and Rumsfeld preferred to have their meetings stay under the radar. Here’s Washington Post reporter Dana Milbank from MSNBC’s Hardball [transcript updated]:

Chalabi’s group, in particularly, had to do with, remember, the [intelligence claims over] mobile biological weapons laboratories and restarting the nuclear program. So he certainly has a key role in this. He is not exactly getting the full red carpet state dinner treatment here. They spirited him in to talk to the Vice President today without allowing any photos, any public coverage of it, wouldn’t even allow him to go to a stake-out afterwards. So, they are giving him some of that treatment, but they also don’t want it to be observed. You’re not going to get that photo of the handshake.

  1. Average TV Viewer says:

Yeah, well, his name isn’t mentioned on the PNAC wesite, either. Go figure.

  2. Robert says:

I wonder if “Curveball” was there too?

  3. The Muse says:

How could they have a war run-up reunion and not invite Judy and Scooter?

Come on, they’re all connected by the roots you know!

  4. Average TV Viewer says:

I want to know why Cheney and Co. are so calm. There is something very wrong with this picture. Are they in denial of their unpopularity? Or are they always paranoid and isolated and don’t really sense any difference?
    Makes me nervous.

  5. Zookeeper says:

The arrogance of Dick “Dick” Cheney is staggering.

  6. HacktheMedia.com says:

Maybe he’s the only “reliable” ally they have left over there. They either throw their lot in with him or they have no allies.

This effectively is what George Packer said in a recent interview:

    http://www.here-now.org/shows/2005/11/20051107_2.asp

(His book Assassin’s Gate is great, by the way. Salon review: http://www.salon.com/books/review/2005/10/07/packer/index_np.html No, I have nothing to do with Packer’s publisher…)

  7. Marie says:

So we enabled a known, lying crook to get into power in Iraq, and now he is treated like a visiting dignitary when he comes here.
Doesn’t this smack of the same circuitry that Cheney and his cabal practiced in the run up to the war — where they would “leak news” to the press (NYTimes, Miler) in time for Sunday publication, then they would all appear on all the morning talk shows simultaneously spouting the same “news, reported in the Times today.”
It’s no wonder there were no photographs — I am sure Rumsfeld regrets his picture with Hussein when we sold him chemical weapons in 1988.

  8. Jesus Christ God of WAR says:

The ReichWingNutWackJobs that occupy the White House obviously feel they owe We The People nothing.

In other times, Chalabi would have been arrested and sent back to Jordan to stand trial for his crimes.

  9. SadSackSuperman says:

Ah, and Bush was in Alaska. Scheduling conflict? Or did he just not get his invitation?

  10. Greg says:

Want to see better relations with the middle east? We (the US) should slap him in irons and deliver him to Jordan where he’s been a fugitive felon for more than two decades.

Why is he not a wanted man in America? Oh, nevermind he’s visiting Cheney and Rummy that explains it. What a corrupt Orwellian piece of crap Executive branch we have.

Instead we gave him the new Iraqi Government role that was his goal in lying 2060 American Troops to their premature deaths.

  11. Jesus Christ God of WAR says:

The world see’s Dick for what he’s worth. Too bad some in the US aren’t as clear on the topic.

“… Tom DeFrank says the vice-president’s pre-war counsel is now coming back to haunt [George Bush].

“There is a feeling on the part of the president, according to people very close to him, that the president got unwise political advice and rosy predictions of how a war and post-war in Iraq would play out.”

“There is also some feeling on the part, not only of the president but also some of his closest political advisers, that the Cheney national security operation got a little too ambitious and became too independent of the Bush and state department national security apparatus, and some aides very close to the president are determined that that will not continue.” …”

Can we arrest Cheney _and_ Chalabi? At the same time? Please???

  12. David B says:

I’d like to see someone at the next WH press conference why Chalabi wasn’t detained for questioning by the FBI for the info leak to the Iranians. Better yet, let the CIA question him, they have ways of making you talk.

I wish the FBI would just go over to the White House and get Chalabi.

I guess they had to get Li’l Georgie out of town so the “Big Kids” could get together and talk about oil and money and stuff.

  20. mytieAfro, dog of disco says:

These people are pigs. They don’t care about the “rule of law” they so freely spew like the bile a crack whore spews looking for her next fix. You can put a suit & tie on a piece of shit, but quess what.. it’s still a piece of shit. As an american, I demand answers! I think the Dems’ & Repubs’ constituients are starting to demand answers. Demand.. Question… Confront… do it now & do it in force… before it’s too late.

  21. robert pooolemos says:

There is a very good reason why these wack jobs are running the halls of government. Too many people allowed them to be there. People in America were too busy raising their chief god (The Greenback) while ultra mad power crooks took over the reins of government. For this I say, the worst could be the best thing for those 37 percent who support these outlaw cowboys called republican conservatives. Bring it on.

  22. RunningDogLackey says:

#18 Either that, or Cheney called him in him to get some embezzling lessons.

  23. Corrryn says:

I don’t understand — Chalabi is an IRAQI OFFICIAL now. It would be inappropriate for U.S. officials NOT to meet with him. (For you lefties to get this point, imagine if a Venezuelan official came to DC – conservatives can’t stand Chavez, but we would understand why some Dems would meet with an official from his government).

  24. The Fly-man says:

Marie, you might have well been talking about Ken Lay. The big agenda is money, of course. Has any one asked what part of our $200+Billion we might actually get back?

  25. Marie says:

He is an Iraqi official because we put him there!! He is one of the reasons we are in Iraq — he and Curveball were the suppliers of war propaganda. He is wanted in Jordan.
How could you not understand. It’s a mockery of diplomacy.

  26. Marie says:

    #17 makes no sense.

  27. RunningDogLackey says:

#25 He is an IRAQI OFFICIAL who’s been sentenced to 22 years in prison by a Jordanian court, and who is the subject of an active FBI investigation for spying on the US.

I think videoconferencing or email would have been just a scochey bit less visible and embarrassing to our country.

  28. Marie says:

#26, I haven’t thought about him a a while. Where the hell is he? Forgotten by us all. Just the way Bush likes it. Jeezus! That is another reason why we need to take back the Congress, so these numerous investigations can begin.
Kennyboy belongs in prison, and the Enron employees need some kind of compensation.

  29. RunningDogLackey says:

#28 Yeah, not only are Ortega and Castro ancient history, but neither one is comparable to Chalabi. Aphrodite whiffed at-bat on that one.

  30. Bowdler says:

Little known fact: CIA potlucks are excelent. With agents serving all over the world, they come back with some great recipes. Contrary to popular belief, cheney, bolton, and libby made several trips to the CIA not too pressure the intellegence, but to bring fresh made cookies and mow on the potluck. At least this is my best guess based on what the administration is sayimg.

  31. RunningDogLackey says:

#32 So, does that mean that Cheney and Lay and the other secret members of the Energy Task Force were REALLY just looking at maps of Iraqi oil fields because they were working on a children’s book about the geology of foreign lands?

Gosh, maybe we’ve had these guys figured wrong all along. ;->

  37. Bowdler says:

strauss’s spirit hovering over them. Guiding them. I read a book called “That hideous Strength” by C.S. Lewis. It was kind of a boardroom drama. These people were selling the planet away, and they thought they were so slick. And they were so dishonest. They had no idea of what they were really doing. What the master planners had in mind. It reminds me so much of cheneys office.

  38. mytieAfro, dog of disco says:

#35.. Do you really believe that?
I just wonder how many disgruntled Repubs are posting here as well… this isn’t about Dems or Repubs or Conserves or Libs… or any party you may choose to support, and don’t forget that. Most who don’t know what’s going on in right front of their faces choose to ignore it, like the coffee table in the living room that they stub their toe on EVERY night, but NEVER MOVE THE TABLE. And every night they say “how did I stub my toe again?” This mess goes beyond party lines.. because it won’t be long before they have YOU behind Concertina wire, with you asking “…how did this happen? Damn, I never saw it coming!”

  45. Greenback says:

Chalabi is the guy convicted for Bank Fraud and related forgeries. Aparently, his Middle East reputation is the man to go to for forgeries, aside from being a Iraqi Power Player before Saddam was in power. This guy is tied to hip with the neocons. Wolfowitz and him are so close they vacation together. Chalabi was the Iraq point man before the invasion. He should not be allowed in the country, let alone sitting in the White House.

  46. WaltTheMan says:

Chalabi is being preped as the next ruler of Iraq. A perfect drop-in as he is a Shiite and a crook. He has been selected as the “winner” in the December “elections”.
Bushco hopes that he will hold on until 2009, but that is shakey. The Sunnis are really upset and could pull him down shortly after the midterms when the repugs get trounced.

  47. W.A.R.ped says:

I am so disgusted with with our present state of American Fascisism and our inabilty to arrest these criminals that I want to puke. How much longer until we see justice?? When will we see a new strange kind of fruit hanging from the trees? I can’t believe the lies and spin that they are still getting away with among the 37% that drink the koolaid They must be getting awful nervous when they travel now knowing that their lies are finally losing traction. The truth will emerge no matter how hard they try to suppress it. Blog On!! Cheney and Chalabi should be the first to go.

  48. Ginger says:

This meeting of Chalabi with Condi, Cheney, Rumsfeld (and Hadley?) is like a major “nah-nah-nah-nah” to the American people who footed the $340,000 per month paid to this creep! None of it came out of Hallibuton’s profits or Bush family fortunes. We PAID for the privilege of being fed bogus intel by Chalabi and his Curball pal! Wonder when we can collect for “defective” product??!! Talk about getting *&%!ed without getting kissed (or, even dinner and a movie). This is beyond appalling! It goes beyond a slap in the face. Wouldn’t surprise me if we’re still paying this turkey….you know, as a “consultant”!

  49. rockygabriel says:

To tell us that he has found WMD’s somewhere or that Sadam is a threat to the American people…This is laughable if not comical…bring on the 2006 Elections!!

Just look at http://www.rense.com and http://www.cloakanddagger.de and wheep like I did when I saw those things for the first time.

  56. Pablo in Mexico says:

Come one folks, you know the reasons for the Chalabi visit with amurkas big wigs.

Everyone has to get their stories straight for when they are indicted in the world court.

Remember too, that Chalabi has to divide up the 9B that was given to him by Bremer.

Turn him over to Jordan, come on folks, that is what a good government would do, not our nest of crooks.

  57. Bernie Parrish says:

I still believe that 9/11 was orchestrated by this administration. Did anyone ever read Crossing the Rubicon by Michael Rupert? He has never been on any TV shows or CNN or anything. Why?

You know, we can partly forgive the German people for electing Hitler. They were a beaten down, economically depressed nation after WWI, struggling for survival. People were rightfully scared and panicky, so they voted for Hitler out of desparation.

America, on the other hand, voted for Bush (supposedly – that one is still worth looking into), in good times. We have no excuse, especially when they voted for him AGAIN!!!.

The German people were desparate; the American people are just plain stupid.

  58. GloomRaven says:

“American oil companies will have a big shot at Iraqi oil,” says Ahmad Chalabi, leader of the Iraqi National Congress (and current member of the Iraqi Governing Council)

  59. Think Progress » York: Bush Officials Met With Chalabi Because ‘A Lot Still Believe’ Iraq Had WMD says:

[...] How does serial fabricator Ahmad Chalabi manage to open the most exclusive doors at the White House and the Pentagon? According to conservative pundit Byron York, it’s because numerous Bush administration officials still believe (despite all the evidence) that weapons of mass destruction were in Iraq. [...]

El-Qaida doesn’t exist, its a codename for a secret CIA plan to unleash a war and hold it for the sake of the very rich in your and my country. There is lots of evidence but all the cases are closed for now. Lets hope there will be justice in the near future otherwise your and my country will have a lot of trouble holding on the standards we live on now. I hope you’ll take a look and be convinced by yourself.

    A: Killing them afterwards.

    Told you it was sick

  66. jahan says:

Ok, I know this sounds like a conspiracy theory, but just think about it. Who could better ruin this administration, (FINALLY) than Chalabi? He was willing to say and do anything the Neo-cons wanted to secure a place in the future of Iraq plundering. Of course, the administration knows how bad it looks to meet with him, and at this particular time when they’re struggling to look credible to anyone! So, why would they do it? I think it’s more that the typical hubris. I think Chalabi holds all the cards at this time. He probably has enough information and proof to let the whole world know what a criminal administration this is, and his silence comes in exchange for many favors. Many favors. Look for this man to be entrenched in power for a long, long time.

  67. I-RIGHT-I says:

#70, Bob – I love that. I hate to call it a joke because it is true.

  68. leaderx says:

for the person who said “and blair isnt a crooke?? (its spelt crook)* i never said he isnt a crook, the war in iraq ruined him, but our goverment to date hasnt had people detained in illegal lost-limbo camps nor have they tortured or advocated torture of potential terrorists.and finally the goverment cares a little more on the issue of climate change- raised by prince charles himself, especially considering most of britian could be underwater due to rising tides in the next hundered years or so.

  69. mighty aphrodite says:

#70, you stupid ass, the poster is from G.B. (England to you).

They spell things a little differently. They spell the word color as colour. God gave you two (2) ears but only one (1) mouth, his message is spend twice as much time listening and half as much time talking.

It is better to remain silent and be thought an idiot, rather than open your mouth and remove all doubt.

Here is an example for you: you spell “is not” “aint”

  70. turk fowler says:

#70, if you would read the posts surrounding it you would see the poster is from Great Britian.

If you don’t get the rub from the above statement, you don’t need to be checking others spelling.

  71. REVOLTED REPUBLICAN says:

Actually the poster is Dutch, he is addressing someone from GB.

At any rate, english is his second language and he was probably taught the proper english like in England.

Poster #70 obviously can not even master his one and only language.

  72. leaderx says:

woaah whats all this about? whos talking about who?

  73. Dan Drew says:

Chalabi…ah, yes…the guy who sat behind Laura Bush at the State of the Union address, the guy Bush couldn’t exactly recall having met (Bush quote: “Chalabi?…I may have shaken his hand over the Rose Garden rope, but I can’t recall, and Chalabi and I aren’t close, and I don’t consult Chalabi or anything…”), the fellow the Bush Administration paid $335K per month for a year or so, the man the Bush Administration wanted to make dictator of Iraq, the Judith Miller source, etc. I can’t imagine a more logical place for this poor soul’s physical presence to surface than at the Bush/Cheney White House.

  74. REVOLTED REPUBLICAN says:

All the patriot-nazi act legislation and we can not even turn this guy over the the Jordanians? Come on, if this guys was a low level average habib or joe, they would have wasted no time in sending him out to be neutered and tortured. One thing about this WarCriminal in Theif, they stick with their own kind.

  75. big papa says:

One would think given the Bush-Cheney image meltdown of the past few months the Dastardly-duo would have the common sense and decency to not further rub their corrupt, treasonous, arrogance in our collective faces. But once again these demons in the White House in perfect unison raise up their middle digits and poke them in the eyes of the American taxpayers. Why is Ahmed Chalabi being whisked around Washington and given the “ultra-secret” red carpet treatment? Because the time has come to issue a status report on the pilfered hundreds of billions Chalabi, Bush and Cheney have managed to steal in this joke of a war. Chalabi is here to update Bush-Cheney on the status of their plan to bilk the US taxpayers and Iraqi people of treasure and oil (in Iraq).

Of course the inbred fools on the right will squeal because they refuse to believe their lying eyes, then tell the rest of us that we’re traitors for refusing to worship at their altar of blood, corruption and stupidity. But should any single act prove the corruption and deviousness of this Bushite mob, Ahmed Chalabi’s not-so-covert “visit”, and the failure of US law enforcement to take him into custody was proof positive.
