Alito: Those Weren’t My Personal Views, I Was Just Lying To Get A Job»

Yesterday, Alito’s 1985 application for a job in the Justice Department was released. In it, he says he “personally believed” a woman’s right to choose was not protected by the Constitution:

alito_doc

Alito is now dismissing the document, claiming he was just saying what he needed to say to ingratiate himself with his potential bosses in the Reagan administration. Here’s what Alito told Sen. Diane Feinstein this afternoon.

It was different then. I was an advocate seeking a job. It was a political job.

Translation: those weren’t my personal views, I was just lying to get a job.

  1. ohdave Says:

So in trying to get this job, did you say things you didn’t believe? Or did you speak to your deeply held beliefs at the time?

Either you believed it at the time or you didn’t.

  2. Ryan Neat Says:

It sounds like he’s talking about a college sexual experiment. How is this consistent with bush’s claim that he won’t change his mind in 20 years? Clearly he’s saying he already has changed his mind in the last 20 years - which contradicting lie is the truth, or are they both just lies?

  3. Average TV Viewer Says:

“Alito is against race based preferences like affirmative action - like most of America is. That is a good thing.”

“Bush can appoint Condi to VP and try to “heal” the country. The first female and black VP - major achievement”

“I wish the GOP was stealing elections”

    They are both lies.

  5. Gary Kleppe Says:

    It was a political job

And so is this one. Next!

  6. cromulent Says:

So he admits that he’s willing to misrepresent his views in order to obtain a job under false pretenses. How is that supposed to supposed to help his cause now?

  7. Average TV Viewer Says:

Doesn’t Alito know that groping 10 year old girls is reserved for Evangelicals?

  8. The Northeast Dilemma Says:

it must suck to know this guy is going to get confirmed and there is nothing you can do about it.

  9. Jay Says:

I would argue that Alito’s confirmation is reaching the realm of “questionable”. The MSM seems to be doing some actual journalism (i.e. truth telling) on Alito which will further cripple an already limping conservative movement. By the time the Alito hearings roll around we may have a different Veep, Rove could be thrown overboard and the entire house of cards may be blowing in the wind. Gonna be an ugly 06.

  10. Capt. Fudgie Says:

It is time that the adults turned the country back over to the children. The “adults” who were going to return honor and dignity have actually just gang raped a nation in shock after 9/11.

The Mayberry Machiavellis from Texas are playing the Hatfields against the McCoys and stealing all the liquor, pills and gold while the fighting is going on.

    Doing a heckuva job too.

  12. snookered Says:

The Republicans have been very effective in returning this discussion to abortion. It ain’t about abortion. Something tells me they should get back on to other qualifying criteria such as his history and ideology.

  13. Mary Poppin Says:

Is Alito for women’s rights or not? No one knows how a judge is going to vote on a case.

NED I guess you have a crystal ball saying Alito is going to be confirmed. The Dems are going to take over in 2006. Old Bushie will be impeached before 2008.

  14. Gregor Samsa Says:

    Alito to Feinstein:
“I’m now a judge, I’ve been on the circuit court for 15 years and it’s very different. I’m not an advocate, I don’t give heed to my personal views, what I do is interpret the law.”

Notice how Alito says things are now “very different”. In other words, he has changed.

Another talking point that is now irrelevant -as Pres. Bush would say.

  15. Maggie Says:

#6 So he admits that he’s willing to misrepresent his views in order to obtain a job under false pretenses. How is that supposed to supposed to help his cause now?

    Comment by cromulent — November 15, 2005 @ 2:53 pm

Thank you, cromulent. Exactly my first thought. Are they supposed to believe he’s not going to say what he needs to say to get this job?

The liar saying, “I don’t lie.”

  16. Average TV Viewer Says:

“it must suck to know this guy(Alito)”

    -Northeast Dilemma

  17. lbc Says:

The much simpler response is for Alito to say that he personally is against abortion but would not legislate against it from the bench. This would be consistent with the right-wing incremental effort to place burdens on women seeking abortion rather than outlawing it outright (that is, until Alito is affirmed and they have a five or six judge majority to overturn Roe). The Democrats in the Senate are going to have to come up with something better than “he was lying in 1985 or he is lying now.”

  18. Ringo Says:

What else will he do to “get a job.” He can’t be trusted.

  19. ellroon Says:

So…if Alito is lying now and proceeds to overturn Roe v Wade, can we fire him?

  20. v irginia cynic Says:

An answer from heaven. Now we just need a senator skillful enough in cross examination to stick the sword into the charging, angry, and wounded bull.

  21. Average TV Viewer Says:

That’s nothin’. Luttig would have sucked a golf ball through a water hose across a busy freeway for the gig.

  22. Rich McVey Says:

The overall impression I am starting to form of Alito is that he does not have the high moral character one expects of a Supreme Court justice. I don’t think he can be trusted to tell the truth when some other self serving answer is conveniently available.

  23. Hesiod Says:

So, he has a history of lying to get a job? Good thing he’ll be under oath this time.

  24. Jay Says:

If Alito is confirmed Roe gets overturned, simple as that. However, this only pushes the legality of abortion back on the states. So now the unfortunate souls in the deep Red South will have to pay for ticket to NY, MA, IL, or CA in addition to their abortions. If that’s not an option, then we have thousands of annual unwanted pregnancies that wind up as unwanted or at least inadequately provided for children. Happy days for the wingnuts.

  25. The Northeast Dilemma Says:

Why do liberals want to smear someone as a liar just because they are pro-life. I think that might explain why every seat in the south is red.

  26. The Supreme Irony of Life... Says:

Alito, Was he Lying Now, or Then?

So, either he lied on his job application when he was seeking employment during the Reagan Administration, or he is lying about his beliefs now.

  27. The Supreme Irony of Life... Says:

Alito, Was he Lying Now, or Then?

Alito responds to his job application under Reagan:

  28. MLDB Says:

    Braawwwcckkk!!

NED, I was gone for a few days and I’ve missed you!

Have cracker w/ your Limbannity parrot friends.

  29. Rodney Says:

“The Republicans have been very effective in returning this discussion to abortion.”

You’re kidding right? The last thing Alito wants to talk about is abortion. That’s why he’s lying about what his position is. Except he now can’t avoid talking about abortion because he seems to have already prejudged the case with his comments in the Reagen documents. Now he has to talk about it and why he was willing to lie to get or keep a job, according to him. And no conservatives this guy is far from a shoe in. We only need to maintain a filibuster to defeat him.

  30. Jay Says:

Frankly, I’m more concerned about Alito’s propensity for protecting the interests of Big Business over we the people, those opinions and decisions will have a more serious impact on the middle class and only serve to drag the nation closer to kleptocracy.

  31. Ryan Neat Says:

    NED,

Still putting out your strawman delusions again? You aren’t pro life, you’re for war and the death penalty. You’re for pro-idiocy and pro-fascism. You’re a hypocrite, a liar, a retard and a fool. In otherwords, you’re a core republican and GW’s ‘base of fools’.

  32. Ryan Neat Says:

    Jay,

That’s my concern as well. The ‘abortion’ stance is just there to get mental midgets like NED to sell out their own personal interests. There’s a fool born every day, and we know qualifies for that on NED’s birthday!

  33. Pete Bogs Says:

how do we know he’s not lying to us NOW?

  34. dumbstruck Says:

Lying to get a job….? Everyting that’s happened in the last 5 years has been the result of lying to get a job.

  35. beverins Says:

Regarding the premonition of thousands of unwanted children and “happy days” for the wingnuts - this will come back to bite them on the ass so hard once those people grow up and realize who made their lives a misery.

  36. beverins Says:

NED - being pro-life is simply the ideology of the damned. They want to claim that “you’re saving the lives of babies” yet these self-same people care not for the baby once it is born. They are fascinated with birth, and that’s really about it. Perhaps they need more sex, as pro-lifers seem to think a lot about vaginas.

  37. The Northeast Dilemma Says:

beverins - that’s sad that you attack your opponents like that. Some people think it’s wrong like some people the death penalty is wrong.

  38. David in NY Says:

The question to ask him is, “What have you written since then that disavows the views you held in 1985?”

    The answer, “Nothing.”

The next question is, “So then, why should we believe you, especially since so much that you have written is consistent with what you said then?”

No further questions. Vote against confirmation.

  39. Giacomo Says:

Guys, what he said was …
the job was political before and thus his personal views were germaine. He hasn’t changed those personal views, but is now in a job (federal judge) where personal views are secondary … he is no longer in the role of advocate, but an interpreter of the law. That makes sense given the very different nature of the positions held … if you don’t happen to like his personal views, that’s an entirely different story. Saying “he lied” back then is disingenuous and not what Alito is saying or inferring.

  40. Average TV Viewer Says:

    “I think I’m a queer”

    Northeast Dilemma

  41. Oberon Says:

    Oh for goodness sake.

You’re not gonna make a dent in Alito by calling him a liar because his stated opinion on a job application 20 years ago may or may not be the same today.

  42. Rodney Says:

We should also try to tie this to Bush habit of picking cronies. i.e Alito was nominated because he’s a brown noser not because he was quailified which he basically admitted being(a brown noser) to Feinstein. Wasn’t FEMA’s Brown a brown noser and Bush’s last court pick according to the rightwing?

  45. The Northeast Dilemma Says:

#40 - interesting you throw such insults when people don’t agree with you. That what liberals always do.

As for being queer, you bring up a good point. Liberals believe there is a gay gene that determines your sexuality in advance of any enviro factors. At some point in time, if this theory is true, women will be able to pinpoint their child’s sexuality before they are born. AND how many women will opt to abort a gay child?

Abortion is a slippery slope and as usual, liberals love it.

  46. Average TV Viewer Says:

“As for [me] being queer, you bring up a good point”

    Northeast Dilemma

  47. Rodney Says:

Seems like we’ve hit a raw spot with the rightwing loons trolling this site. I say we rub salt in it. This guy definitely does not want to talk about abortion and his pathetic “I was just kissing ass” excuse doesn’t get it. He’s already judged the case without hearing the evidence. That should remove him from consideration for the High Court by itself.

  48. MLDB Says:

Why would someone want to abort a gay child?

(P.S. Do you like saltines or butter crackers?

  49. Average TV Viewer Says:

  55. Giacomo Says:

Is the fact that he’s against abortion in any way impact is qaulifications to be a supreme court judge or is it that you (you in the general sense) don’t agree with him. There’s a chasm of difference between “unqualified” and “I disagree with his opinion so he sucks”. The first should disqualify him, the latter is in the realm of “tough tarts”.

  56. Giacomo Says:

and I swallowed my own bitter pill/opinion when RGB was nominated … qualified yes, but I didn’t agree with her … sucked for me.

  57. Giacomo Says:

    RBG, that is

  58. MLDB Says:

But he isn’t even the most qualified. Bush said Miers was the most qualified candidate.

  59. Chris in AZ Says:

  60. Chris in AZ Says:

so wait, NED, patriot = babykiller

  61. Ryan Neat Says:

An anti reproductive rights republican is like a flat lander creationist. It should disqualify them from any civility or political position in government. It’s based on the person being a whacko retard like Gaicomo is.

  62. Ryan Neat Says:

    NED,

There are gay genes, we already know that. What’s your point? Are you now saying that republicans should support all gay rights since being gay is ‘genetic’? Doesn’t that undermine the same ‘bible’ you trust to say abortion is wrong?

How could you possibly reconcile these two conflicting religious theories? Wow, the slipper slope is clearly admitting that gay people are legitimately that way - in that case I doubt many parents would want to get rid of their gay kids if they knew it was ‘normal’ after all, right?

    You’re such a retarded fool.

  63. Rodney Says:

Why is he lying though if he and conservatives think being anti-choice is a winning position? 1. Because Supreme court justices are not supposedto prejudge cases. 2. Moderate Republicans need cover to vote for him - plausible deniability I think they call it. They need to be able to tell voters when he votes to overturn Roe that they didn’t think he would overturn Roe. Alito’s lie shows how desperate he is now that this memo has surfaced. He not only has to talk about abortion, he has to LIE about it. I think we can sustain a filibuster on this guy with a little more time. Maybe easily.

  64. The Northeast Dilemma Says:

Ryan - actually, the gay gene has never been proven, but again since you’re a lying liberal, you would never mention that. The evidence is inconclusive.

AND I am proving a point. Liberal abortion laws can lead to genocide for certain “undesirable” babies like those with downs syndrome. The gay gene is a lie so I wouldn’t worry about those folks, but it’s an interesting theory.

  65. Joe Buck Says:

Apparently this guy also lied last time around about which cases he would recuse himself from.

  66. MLDB Says:

Just because you think being gay is undesirable, doesn’t mean the rest of the world does.

  67. Giacomo Says:

Ryan … you remind me of that kid in elementary school who, when he couldn’t best someone in a sport, chose to pout and “take his ball home”. “Waa, I don’t like what you say, that I lost, that you don’t agree, that you won’t change your mind to think like me, it’s not fair … you must be stupid because I’m the best at everything and I’m always right, Im going home, Waa”

Dude, seriously, stop acting like a petulant third grader who’s been catered to and have a reasonable debate. I wouldn’t keep responding to you if I didn’t think you’d eventually respond in a mature fashion. You seem to have read a lot and have some sort of clue (at least in what you hold to be true)… responding in the above way only cheapens what you’re saying.

  68. The Northeast Dilemma Says:

#69 - agreed. I think it would be terrible for someone to do that.

  69. Ryan Neat Says:

    NED,

You’re wrong. They know it exists from animal experiments.

    http://www.stanford.edu/ dept/ news/ pr/ 96/ 961212behavgene.html

The only thing they don’t know is which genes do this in humans. There’s also been other similar experiments and evidence in animals, including the identification of natural gay behavior in several hundred animal species.

Once again, ignorance is bliss, and republicans demostrate the height of bliss.

  70. Ryan Neat Says:

    NED,

There’s nothing wrong with being gay, but as I’ve pointed out before, Homophobia is a CLINICAL and DIAGNOSED mental illness. The APA has treatments and resources where you can go and seek professional help. It’s just one of the many mental illnesses that seem all too prevalent in republican partisan fools.

  71. . Says:

    Ryan,

NED stated Liberals believe there is a gay gene. He never said he acknowledged the existence of one, which there isn’t. What proof do you have to offer that there is one.

  72. Ryan Neat Says:

And Giacomo, you don’t debate, you ‘word parse’, which is what stupid nerd idiot ‘often engineers’ do who don’t possess social skills or comprehensive intellects. Clearly you were the stupid spoiled idiot child, and you merely project your own insecurities. Typical republican hypocrisy demonstrated yet once again!

  73. Ryan Neat Says:

  88. Ryan Neat Says:

    NED,

Still want to argue the lie that there’s no gay genetics? Clearly they’ve proven that such a thing does exist in the animal kingdom, and that it can be manipulated. While I know creationist mythological retards like you believe in unicorns and devine creation of humans from mud, scientifically speaking this argument is largely settled. There is obviously a ‘genetic component’ that makes at least some people gay. So there you have it. A reason you can accept the fact that you’re gay, and be OK, with it. Because we all know homophobia is a true sign of homosexuality. In fact a university of georgia (A RED school) a few years back showed an over 80% correlation between homophobic men, and their arrousal by gay porn. I bet if they’d tested out the other 20%, they’d have seen kiddie porn turned their crank. Because that’s the second correlation that seems to exist - pedophelia and homophobia go hand in hand as a secondary cause…

Either way you look at it NED, by ‘religious’ standards, you’re a loser.

  95. Giacomo Says:

Alito never said he was lying to get a job … that’s a ridiculous assumption based upon the fact that his first job was one where his personal opinions were pertinent and his current (and future) job is one where they aren’t. I fully believe he’s pro-life but of the 3 cases he heard that were about abortion, he sided with the pro-choice side (often because of precedent).

  98. Ryan Neat Says:

    Giacomo,

    You’re a liar.

Alito’s partially dissenting opinion in the Third Circuit’s 1991 case Planned Parenthood v. Casey. The case involved five sections of Pennsylvania law. Alito concurred with the court on striking down all five sections except for the state’s provision that would have required some women seeking abortions to notify their husbands.

“Alito basically concluded that spousal notice, along with its various exceptions, would be constitutional under the guidance of Justice O’Connor’s opinions,” Forsythe said.

  99. Ryan Neat Says:

    Doe V. Groody,
    http://vls.law.villanova.edu/ locator/ 3d/ March2004/ 024532p.pdf

“Police officers requested a warrant to search the house of a suspected drug dealer and “all occupants therein.” The warrant issued by the judge, however, only authorized the search of the suspect specifically and no one else.

When the police served the warrant, they found the suspect’s wife and ten-year-old daughter on the premises. From what I gather of the reports, no drugs were found on the suspect nor in the premises. The police therefore decided to strip-search the mother and ten-year-old daughter, who were taken upstairs after a female officer arrived, were told to remove clothing, and were searched. Nothing was found.

You say this is a ‘common place’ people stash drugs, yet the police didn’t request the right to search the family, neither did it possess said right. And if it was so common, why weren’t any drugs found on the kids?

You’re substituting fascist police tactics, and strip searching children without even a warrant to back you up, and you believe this is ‘OK’?

    1) Illegal search and seizure was what the british did to americans, and why it is ENSHRINED in our constitution to not have this.
    2) That little quote I keep posting from Franklin was FROM this very act, and was in response to its lunacy.
    3) This is a foundation civil right that makes us american, and separates us from a police state.

Clearly you either know nothing of american history, or you possess no american values. You are a FASCIST IDIOT, and exactly the sort of retarded fool this country was set up to defend against!

i just want out of …..n . america, is that too much to ask?

  102. Alyce G Says:

Women & girls, BEWARE! If this man is approved, he will be the 5th Roman Catholic seated on our Supreme Court. He has now shown that he is willing to lie to get a job. Write your Congressman and/or Representative. Maybe we can shoot this nomination down!

  103. . Says:

Bush raps China over freedom, vows to promote democracy in Asia

    By Ron Hutcheson

    Knight Ridder Newspapers

KYOTO, Japan - President Bush brought his freedom agenda to Asia on Wednesday, taking a swipe at China while extolling Japan as an example of freedom’s power.

Setting the tone for a four-nation swing through the region, Bush told Asian leaders that freedom is on the march and cannot be stopped in their part of the world. He bluntly told Chinese leaders that economic freedom in China would inevitably break their hold on power.

  104. TAC Says:

I went to Google and typed in “federal employment application” and came up with the following random Fed employment form “Optional Application for Federal Employment (OF 612).” As you might expect, it contained what I’ll call a “truthfulness statement”:

“I certify that, to the best of my knowledge and belief, all of the information on and attached to this application is true, correct, complete, and made in good faith. I understand that false or fraudulent information on or attached to this application may be grounds for NOT HIRING ME OR FIRING ME after I begin work, and may be punishable by fine or imprisonment. I understand that any information I give may be investigated.”

Simple question: Does none of this, even if just from an ethical, rather than legal, standpoint apply to ass clown Alito? And if not, why not?

  105. Ryan Neat Says:

. whacko, if you really want to have your 100% unrelated whacko topics, create your own fascist blog. Othwerwise, just do yourself and everyone a favor, and shut up. You just look like a loser republican whacko dude. But clearly, you’re just looking like who you REALLY are.

  106. Piltdown Says:

I know I’d abort MY baby if it were going to grow up as a stupid Republican.

Abortion should be retro-active to the 21st year.

  107. Joe Max Says:

    #45:

    > interesting you throw such insults when people don’t agree
    > with you. That what liberals always do.

Conservatives never insult anyone they disagree with, do they , Ms. Coulter?

    >As for being queer, you bring up a good point. Liberals believe
    > there is a gay gene that determines your sexuality in advance
    > of any enviro factors.

This liberal beleives there is some scientific evidence for this, but it’s unproven. Liberals believe in the use of science, and that’s how science works.

    > At some point in time, if this theory is true, women will be
    > able to pinpoint their child’s sexuality before they are born.
    > AND how many women will opt to abort a gay child?

Who knows? Only the woman faced with the decision. If you’re not female and of childbearing years it’s none of your business anyway. (Nor is it mine.)

Do you intend this as a call to end all scientific investigation of genetics, so we’ll never know if the theory holds true? It sounds like you think ignorance is the solution.

Let’s turn this over to you: what if abortion is banned and a “genetically gay” child is born. Who will want to ADOPT a gay child? Religious conservatives who campaigned for banning abortion? Not likely. Sounds like either way we’ve got a gay child problem.

    > Abortion is a slippery slope and as usual, liberals love it.

    Slide ya later, greasy…

  108. Frederick Says:

This guy is amazing. He broke his promises to the Senate in 1990 to recuse himself from cases involving Vanguard, Smith Barney, and his sister’s firm. He now contends he lied to get a job in the Justice Department. And the reason the Senate should think that this time he’s telling the truth is . . .?

  109. The Real American Says:

Altio: “I say what ever I need to to get my employer the things he needs or wants. I was lying for my job back then. Why on earth would you think I was lying now?”

Hmmm…. lying for those who are paying you…. THEN AND NOW?

He needs to go away, far away. I suggest the “tropics”.

  110. The Northeast Dilemma Says:

    Ryan,

I didn’t clarify that, I am 6′ 1″ in hair and heels, only 5′4″ in boy drag. But I can’t do the boy drag now that the hormones are kicking in, my bust has really grown. I am almost a b cup now.

You can catch my shows on Saturday and Sunday nights at the Velvet Spike. I mostly do Judy Garland show tunes but sometimes branch out into some R&B. I love Miss Ross but I just can’t pull that off yet. I am getting better though.

I have the final snip for my conversion scheduled for December 2nd. I think I’ll never miss it, so I am looking forward to it.

Fyi: I’m looking for a GWB lookalike for marriage, if you look like my dear leader, give me a shout!

  111. REVOLTED REPUBLICAN Says:

It looks like the REPUGnicans won’t shut up until they have everyone agreeing with them or paying for not agreeing with them.

Heaven forbid any of them ever admit any feelings for other humans. They’ll never admit that the correct opinion of abortion is:

Not my body, NOT MY CHOICE!

    Get rid of Altio-I-Love-Torture.

  112. I-RIGHT-I Says:

    Question:

Have any of you ever met a republicomplainer that actually didn’t poke it’s nose into other peoples business?

    I haven’t.

  113. mighty aphrodite Says:

I bet if no-nothing-dimentia’s mom had the opportunity she would have ABORTED!

  114. mighty aphrodite Says:

If no-nothing-dimentia’s mom had the opportunity she would have ABORTED!

  115. The Fool Says:

Hmmmm. If he lied to get a job in 1985, do you think he might lie to get a job in 2005?

    Just asking.

  116. AckSyn_JAcksyn Says:

Looks Like the Supreme court has turned into, Just that,
Mr. Alito, A Political Job, Ergo, you would also possible violate someones rights for the benefit of someone you may view as a superior, or perhaps owing as to favors.

You Know Mr. A-lie-ito, the ol’ you scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours, while that other sucker, in the court, has to go find a tree. –AJ

  117. SpeakSpeak News Says:

[…] Via Think Progress: Alito is now dismissing the document, claiming he was just saying what he needed to say to ingratiate himself with his potential bosses in the Reagan administration. Here’s what Alito told Sen. Diane Feinstein this afternoon. […]

  118. Iconoclast » Blog Archive » SCOTUS Nominee Alito: Those Weren’t My Personal Views, I Was Just Lying To Get A Job Says:

[…] Think Progress: Yesterday, Alito’s 1985 application for a job in the Justice Department was released. In it, he says he “personally believed” a woman’s right to choose was not protected by the Constitution. […]

  119. Margo Says:

Most of the biblical anti-gay rhetoric comes from obscure references in Leviticus which also says children who speak back to their parents should be slaughtered. Obviously, conservative bible beaters cherry-pick to prop up their lame arguments. Christianity is based on a new covenant created by the death and resurection of JC. JC never addressed homosexuality. If you are a follower of Christ, his teachings trump anything that is in the OT (which is strictly a covenant with Jews). “Whatever you do for the least of these….Blessed are the Peacemakers” apparently is just a bunch of jargon to the Christian Right.

  120. Margo Says:

    WAKE UP MIZZ AMERICA

1 ¶ And after these things I saw another angel come down from heaven, having great power; and the earth was lightened with his glory.
2 And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird.
3 For all nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, and the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the earth are waxed rich through the abundance of her delicacies.
4 And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues.
5 For her sins have reached unto heaven, and God hath remembered her iniquities.
6 Reward her even as she rewarded you, and double unto her double according to her works: in the cup which she hath filled fill to her double.
7 How much she hath glorified herself, and lived deliciously, so much torment and sorrow give her: for she saith in her heart, I sit a queen, and am no widow, and shall see no sorrow.
8 Therefore shall her plagues come in one day, death, and mourning, and famine; and she shall be utterly burned with fire: for strong is the Lord God who judgeth her.
9 ¶ And the kings of the earth, who have committed fornication and lived deliciously with her, shall bewail her, and lament for her, when they shall see the smoke of her burning,
10 Standing afar off for the fear of her torment, saying, Alas, alas, that great city Babylon, that mighty city! for in one hour is thy judgment come.
11 And the merchants of the earth shall weep and mourn over her; for no man buyeth their merchandise any more:
12 The merchandise of gold, and silver, and precious stones, and of pearls, and fine linen, and purple, and silk, and scarlet, and all thyine wood, and all manner vessels of ivory, and all manner vessels of most precious wood, and of brass, and iron, and marble,
13 And cinnamon, and odours, and ointments, and frankincense, and wine, and oil, and fine flour, and wheat, and beasts, and sheep, and horses, and chariots, and slaves, and souls of men.
14 And the fruits that thy soul lusted after are departed from thee, and all things which were dainty and goodly are departed from thee, and thou shalt find them no more at all.
15 The merchants of these things, which were made rich by her, shall stand afar off for the fear of her torment, weeping and wailing,
16 And saying, Alas, alas, that great city, that was clothed in fine linen, and purple, and scarlet, and decked with gold, and precious stones, and pearls!
17 For in one hour so great riches is come to nought. And every shipmaster, and all the company in ships, and sailors, and as many as trade by sea, stood afar off,
18 And cried when they saw the smoke of her burning, saying, What city is like unto this great city!
19 And they cast dust on their heads, and cried, weeping and wailing, saying, Alas, alas, that great city, wherein were made rich all that had ships in the sea by reason of her costliness! for in one hour is she made desolate.
20 Rejoice over her, thou heaven, and ye holy apostles and prophets; for God hath avenged you on her.
21 And a mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone, and cast it into the sea, saying, Thus with violence shall that great city Babylon be thrown down, and shall be found no more at all.
    22 And the voice of harpers, and musicians, and of pipers, and trumpeters, shall be heard no more at all in thee; and no craftsman, of whatsoever craft he be, shall be found any more in thee; and the sound of a millstone shall be heard no more at all in thee;
23 And the light of a candle shall shine no more at all in thee; and the voice of the bridegroom and of the bride shall be heard no more at all in thee: for thy merchants were the great men of the earth; for by thy sorceries were all nations deceived.
24 And in her was found the blood of prophets, and of saints, and of all that were slain upon the earth.

  121. REVOLTED REPUBLICAN Says:

These same bible beaters (Jesus-junkies) also eat shrimp. If they are truly not cherry picking what to do from this book, they wouldn’t eat shell fish.

If they are truly not cherry picking what to do from this book, they would believe it is OK to sell your child into slavery, they would believe it is fine to at least drink wine.

I could go on forever, but it is a waste of time.

They would also believe that bats are birds, that rabbits chew the cud, that grasshoppers have only four legs, that the sun can be made to stand still in the sky, that a man can be swallowed by a whale and survive, that leprosy can be diagnosed by looking for mold on the walls, and…, and…, and…
