Smears, Lies and Videotape: A Leak Scandal Documentary

The story of the CIA leak scandal is far from over. But so much has already happened, sometimes it’s easy to miss the big picture.

We’ve created a video to help you keep everything straight. It uses footage pulled directly from the White House, recent TV news clips and other archival video to explain exactly what happened and why it’s important. Most of the story is told by administration officials themselves.

The fact that the whole situation requires that much explanation is sad. People in the Bush Administration leaked the identity of a covert CIA operative who was likely working againt terrorist organizations, and could have possibly undermined her contacts and progress that she made in gathering information about future terrorist attacks. Way to fight terror, assholes.

compelling video — no trouble with sound here.

if you’re going to post the dates with the video snippets, though, it would be better to put them forward chronological order, though. it’s a very compelling video; the spin you add in splicing the scenes out of order is unnecessary!

The only smearing occuring is being done by liberals. Joe Wilson OUTED his wife by using her status to go to Niger in the first place. He was a plant by the Kerry campaign and his sole purpose to create a phony controversy.

Conservatives will fight back on this like you have never seen. If you want to play dirty, we’ll be glad to get in the mud with you.

Why do liberals hate America so much?

  11. neastdilemma says:

Also – maybe you people should ask who Woodward’s source is before you go on the attack.

  16. neastdilemma says:

why do you all hate Bush so much? John Kerry, Billary, Maddy Albright, etc. all claimed Iraq had WMD. Only Bush was willing to do something about it. Why not be mad at everyone for LYING instead of just being partisan.

I think liberals should be forced to live in Iraq under the rule of someone like Sadam. Then, see how bad Bush is.

  17. Ryan Neat says:

Crimeless incident? Bahaha, yeah, outing an intelligence officer during a time of war – what a ‘crimeless incident’.

Republicans are such looney whackos, and so consistently so… Whatever psychodelic you’re taking sure is potent, you’re clearly no longer present in our reality miss SiliconeBoob.

  18. Ryan Neat says:

    NED,

Hey Ugly, Stupid boy. Why don’t you serve in Iraq. I hear they have don’t ask, don’t tell policies for 70s gay porn stars like you…

  19. Ryan Neat says:

NED shows what being butt ugly, and drinking one’s self into a lonely drunk stooper every night will do to fry what’s left of one lonely retarded guy’s intellect.

Poor butt ugly little thing. No wonder he hates women so much, clearly the only way he’s getting any loving is by paying some serious cash!

  20. Ryan Neat says:

    NED,

We already live under the rule of someone like Saddam.

He tortures. He uses WMDs. He puts his own citizens in jail without access to attorney’s. He raids the government coffers to give money to his cronies. And he acts like a dictator on the world and national stage.

Unfortunately bush is very much like Saddam, that’s why we’re complaining you ugly whacko retard!

  23. . says:

    Ryan,

Plame was not outed by Libby. If she was, why didn’t Fitzgerald charge him with it?

  24. cynicon implant says:

#18 Ryan — There have been no indictments for ‘outing’ Plame — which was the original reason for the investigation.

    You are delusional.

  25. Anastasia Beaverhausen says:

Excellent work. Perfect choice of music, too.

  26. Jesus Christ God of WAR says:

The ReichWingNuts think just because Libby is indicted means “it’s over”. Libby was simply caught with his pants down in the most obvious manner possible.

Don’t look now, but Woodward spent another two hours in front of Fitzgerald on Monday. Karl, the GOP’s Fat Queen, is still in trouble. So is Cheney… and it’s not his heart machine that causing him pain either.

  27. Wayne says:

wow,new development on Rawstory.com,just saw it

    http://rawstory.com/news/2005/National_Security_Adviser_was_Woodwards_source_1116.html

National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley was the senior administration official who told Washington Post Assistant Managing Editor Bob Woodward that Valerie Plame Wilson was a covert CIA officer, attorneys close to the investigation and intelligence officials tell RAW STORY.

  28. Dr. Strangelove says:

neastdilemma, yeah, perhaps you should live under Abu Graib conditions…..Nazi-luver

  29. Ryan Neat says:

#25, the investigation isn’t over, and as republicans pointed out with clinton, prosecuting for lying and coverup of an event is equivalent to admission of the original crime. It’s just easier to prosecute on :)

Sorry, you lose by your own history – loser!

  30. Ryan Neat says:

    NED and WhackoFakeBoob,

Libby was a co-conspirator. Only one party would have been the one to actually ‘release’ the information, the rest are co-conspirators. That means that only one person will likely ever be charged eventually for the actual crime, and most likely that will either be Hadley or Rove.

The others will probably be charged on related conspiracy charges such as Libby.

It’s called ‘laws’, look it up sometime – you might find it educational. Considering your general intellectual laziness however, I doubt either of you will have either the fortitude or ability to actually digest the concept or its details.

  32. Ryan Neat says:

    NED,

You make wild claims about how bad saddam was, but recent polling in Iraq seems to indicate they think we’re worse.

    Forty-five per cent of Iraqis believe attacks against British and American troops are justified – rising to 65 per cent in the British-controlled Maysan province;
    82 per cent are “strongly opposed” to the presence of coalition troops;

    • less than one per cent of the population believes coalition forces are responsible for any improvement in security;

    • 67 per cent of Iraqis feel less secure because of the occupation;

    • 43 per cent of Iraqis believe conditions for peace and stability have worsened;

    • 72 per cent do not have confidence in the multi-national forces.

  33. Flamethrower says:

Wow, powerful video, all the more schocking when you see all their lies in one place. Sad to see what the Bushies have done to our democracy – I guess it’s A-OK with the NEDster. I guess he thinks they won’t come knocking at his door in the middle of the night.

Re: performance, my firewall honked it up, but once I shut it down, the video was fine. Anyone have some money I can borrow, this guy in Niger seems to be in need.

I love the phase-shift on Cheney’s voice. Darth Vader wishes he had it so good.

  34. Spudge_Boy says:

    #33

Ryan don’t forget that Iraq had a 17% unemployment rate during Saddam. That’s pretty bad. But, now Iraq has a 43% unemployment rate under Bush. That is really bad.

So, the Iraqis sit around with no jobs and watch as the no-bid contractors make sh!t loads of money working in their country.

That would never happen in the US, oh wait, yes it is.

This same thing is happening in NO, AL and LA right now!

  35. Jesus Christ God of WAR says:

#33, #36 – … and, 64% of Iraqi’s supported the US occupation _until_ Abu Ghraib torture by US troops was revealed. Thereafter, 9% of Iraqis support the US presence.

So… when do We The People hand BushCo over to the Hague to be tried and hung for their crimes. The stuff these fools have lead this formerly great nation into is just sickening! Chemical weapons used on civilians. Torture all over the planet. Ugh. The images make me sick. But Repugs probably love look’n at all that carnage.

  36. swank says:

  38. cynicon implant says:

    hey JC,

  42. cynicon implant says:

Ryan, the article says “white phosphorous shells are a standard weapon used by field artillery units and are not banned by any international weapons convention to which the U.S. is a signatory”. So what is your point? That we used an acceptable weapon against the enemy? Whoa, stop the presses…

  43. cynicon implant says:

JC, read your own article: “So WP itself is not a chemical weapon and therefore not illegal”. Don’t forget to take your meds.

    http://www.truthout.org/cgi-bin/artman/exec/view.cgi/37/9641

How much of this would have ended has Bush done the right things in Afghanistan? How much of this could have been avoided had Bush not invaded a largely harmless country, Iraq? We’ll never know.

But for treason, for lying, for torture, for the tens of thousands of innocents killed, BushCo should be handed over to the Hague, tried, and hung for their evil deeds.

  45. Ryan Neat says:

    SillyConnedBoob,

They have dual use. They aren’t banned when used for battlefield lighting. When used as a chemical weapon fired into civilians they are considered a chemical weapon.

You really are a retarded whacko aren’t you.

  46. Cynicons fat pig mother says:

WP used as an anti-personel weapon against civilians is a chemical weapon. One could only wish it is used on your loved ones one day. HAAAAAAAAAAAAAA you retarded evil rightwing fool.Suck it pig

  47. Ryan Neat says:

Here you go SillyConnedBoob, the Christian Science Monitor – you trust them – right?

“RAI says the use of white phosphorus in built-up areas amounts to the illegal use of chemical weapons”

    and

“Washington is not a signatory of an international treaty restricting white phosphorus devices.

These devices ARE considered WMDs by international convention.

Woodward went from a hero to a slime..how many times did ya hear him on TV DEFENDING position against the CIA leak investagation…right up to the day Libby was indited. He has his little book deal with the Bushies and he didn’t want that to go bad…He sold his ethics and his soul to the Bushies for 40 pieces of silver

  52. Pablo in Mexico says:

According to Bob Woodard, a water boy for the bush administration, this thing was going around the reporters for about a month before old slow brained novak printed it.

Why is woodard coming out of the closet now? Could it be that he was not on the inside of the biggest story since the nixon scandal and was a little peeved? Could be I guess.

The man is a lying egomaniac and is getting in this thing to try and take some heat off Bush and Cheney, no other reason. He said to himself – self, if my name wont do it, nothing will. He has been in bed with Bush and Cheney since the gitgo.

I hope he gets his with and get to do some Judy Miller time.

  53. Marie says:

NED — Go be all that you can be — join the army and stand up for the stupidity you display on your posts here.

  54. Marie says:

I read somewhere that Valerie Plame, who worked for Brewster Jennings, was outed for another reason. Brewster Jennings was the CIA operation investigating global WMD proliferation and they thwarted a shipment of VX going from Turkey to Iraq in 2002. The shipper of that VX was our own government. It would have been hidden in Iraq until our soldiers would have “found” it after the invasion.
The fact that she, an employee of BJ & Assoc., happened to be married to Joe Wilson, was a serendipitous gift to the administration, to expose BJ & Assoc. and eliminate their plans, programs, and operations.
Sounds pretty contrived? Think about this administration, their long-term goals, and what they have done in the past to their enemies.

  55. Ryan Neat says:

    Marie,

As I understand it, the Turks who were involved with that shipment were tied to the Carlyle Group, the Abramoff scandal, Delay and the entire NeoCon web of corruption. Illegal weapons proliferation is a huge problem that the US (republican business interests) have become tied with.

  56. Ryan Neat says:

    SillyConnedBoob,

Do you feel STUPID now? YOU SHOULD!

  57. Lee Spector says:

  64. kjlovell says:

Thanks Ryan and Marie, until now I thought I knew quite a bit about the Carlyle group, but I was totally unaware of the VX.

That explains why dumbya and crashcart kept insisting there were WMD in Iraq. If it had worked, I bet the dumb Americans (that 51% mandate crap) would have totally forgotten that we were originally supposed to be in Afganistan looking for Osamma BEEN FORGOTTEN.

I love this blog (except for the Nazi-reich-wing-nuts).

But they are good for a laugh at the stupid good nazis.

  65. kjlovell says:

Are sillycon and dimentia for real? I can’t tell if their lies are intended as humor anymore.

Oh well, I don’t read their garbage filled lies anyway.

  66. Ryan Neat says:

    kjlovell,

The carlyle group was also one of the HUGE beneficiaries of the oil for food program – something republican partisan hacks never seem to want to discuss. The Volker report exposed them, Halliburton, and several other ‘republican’ companies as being the real thieves in the den…

Just goes to show you that wherever there’s scandal and crooked behavior, a republican is always at its center.

  67. Ryan Neat says:

According to the report, the administration wasn’t just going to fabricate printed evidence, they tried to fabricate PHYSICAL EVIDENCE to lie about the WMDs with the help of the israelis. Now that’s a good way to piss off all your suspicious arab neighbors isn’t it?

    Wayne Madsen Quote:

New aspect of Valerie Plame/Brewster Jennings exposure revealed. According to U.S. intelligence sources, the White House exposure of Valerie Plame and her Brewster Jennings & Associates was intended to retaliate against the CIA’s work in limiting the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. WMR has reported in the past on this aspect of the scandal. In addition to identifying the involvement of individuals in the White House who were close to key players in nuclear proliferation, the CIA Counter-Proliferation Division prevented the shipment of binary VX nerve gas from Turkey into Iraq in November 2002. The Brewster Jennings network in Turkey was able to intercept this shipment which was intended to be hidden in Iraq and later used as evidence that Saddam Hussein was in possession of weapons of mass destruction. U.S. intelligence sources revealed that this was a major reason the Bush White House targeted Plame and her network.

CIA counter-proliferation network prevented a WMD “salting” operation by Bush White House in Iraq.

In fact, U.S. intelligence sources report that the first shipment of VX nerve gas to Saddam Hussein was carried out between 1988 and 1989. The gas was shipped to Iraq by a U.S. company that was established in 1987 — The Carlyle Group.

U.S. intelligence sources have also confirmed that Israeli military officers served unofficially with the U.S. Central Command headquarters in Baghdad. The Israelis were attached to the J2X (Joint Intelligence Liaison) in Baghdad. Their presence in Baghdad, according to the sources, was kept secret.

  68. Jesus Christ God of WAR says:

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20051116/pl_afp/usattacksprisons_051116182351 is reporting that:

“Germany, Hungary, Italy, Morocco, Norway, Poland, Romania, Spain and Sweden have all been linked to the
CIA’s use of planes for the transit, or rendition, of prisoners allegedly subjected to extra-judicial detention and torture.

…According to the Washington Post, the CIA has placed more than 100 illegally held suspects in a secret prison network in
Afghanistan, Thailand and Eastern Europe since the September 11 attacks on the United States…

…The International Committee of the Red Cross says it has tried in vain for more than two years to persuade Washington to give it access to those held secretly abroad “in the context of the war on terrorism.”…

…UN special rapporteur into torture, Manfred Nowak, has called on the EU and the European Council to “hold high level inquiries” into the sea of allegations and the European Council says one is to follow.”

Like I said, global torture. Impeach Bush NOW!!! Then deliver he and his buddies to the Hague.

At least the speechwriter and Stephen Hadley. Likely Rove, Rice, and the Prez too. After such an effort to remove it from the speech months earlier, there is no believable excuse for its showing up again in the State of the Union–the most vetted speech the president makes all year.

For the 2004 campaign, there are 221 Rangers and 327 Pioneers, so far. In the 2000 campaign, 550 fundraisers signed up to be Pioneers, and at least 241 of them reached their goal. The song remains the same, 2001-2005
    In re Afghanistan, 2001-2002:

    “graveyard of empires”

    “natural warriors”

    “quagmire”

    “the holy month of Ramadan”

    “the brutal Afghan winter”

“Millions of Afghans will starve to death.”

    “The Arab street will explode.”

    In re Iraq, 2002-2003:

    “hundreds of thousands of refugees”

“Saddam will use his chemical weapons against our troops.”

    “quagmire”

    “isolated and without allies”

    “the brutal Iraqi summer”

    “The Arab street will explode.”

    In re Iraq, 2004-2005:

    “looming civil war”

“Arabs need a strong hand and won’t be able to handle democracy.”

    “Iraqi insurgents”

    “quagmire”

“The Iraqis will be scared away from the polls.”

    “The Sunni street will explode.”

    I should count my blessings.

At least people have stopped talking about how we need “an exit strategy”.

    A few predictions
I’ve been thinking that it’s only a matter of time before mainstream thought in this country begins the process of lionizing Saddam Hussein. With his trial beginning, the tone of media coverage is starting to bear out my worst fears. (You wouldn’t think it would be possible to admire someone who has done what Saddam has uncontestably done, but in a country where people wear Guevera t-shirts without hiding their faces, I suppose just about anything is possible.)

    I predict:
The words “defiant”, “strong”, “canny”, and “independent” will become de rigeur in all stories concerning Saddam’s trial.

The meme that the trial is “illegal” (because not blessed by “international-law experts”) will spread. Shortly, it will be routine to refer to the “illegal trial” in editorials, and to “the trial, whose legality is disputed” in news coverage.

If and when he is executed, the television news coverage will feature somber voices.

On the day, no Iraqis who were victims themselves or who lost family will be quoted. Only Baathist voices will be heard, mourning “the great lion”, and so on.

Editorials will announce that since obviously the Iraqi people mourn Saddam Hussein, his execution will only increase the “Iraqi” “insurgency”.

Within two months, Saddam’s daughter Raghad will be the subject of a sympathetic television interview, perhaps by Barbara Walters. The interviewer will not ask her what kind of a tree she would be, but will ask how she felt “the day you lost your father”.

Raghad will do a lecture tour of the US, and will be invited to speak at several prominent universities.

None of the victims of Saddam Hussein will be invited to speak in any of these venues, then or in the future.

  86. Marie says:

Nothing changes the case against Libby no matter what his lawyers say. The charges will remain. Fitzgerald said in his indictment that Libby was the first KNOWN LEAKER of Plame’s name.
Woodward is in trouble now, however, because his story has holes. The excuse he gave (avoiding a subpoena) was wrong because in June 2003, no grand jury had even been ordered. When he was appearing on TV as a cheerleader for the White House and criticizing Fitsgerald as a “junkyard” prosecutor, he was fully aware of the duplicitous role he had in the matter. His lame apology to his editor is just that – lame. It doesn’t answer to his unethical conduct.
Bob Woodward – what has happened to him – this will be the end of his credibility.

ThinkProgress regulars and others capable of independent thought, stop feeding the freeping trolls. They stink of the same desperation that permeates anyone who hitched their wagon to the dim star of The Chimp. Pity them, but don’t argue with them. You get nowhere, and let’s face it, they were fool enough to vote for Bush twice. That’s proof that their brains are not firing on all four cylinders. They are clinging to “fake” surveys and more conspiracy theories than an episode of The Lone Gunmen, but you cannot deny the irrefutable truth: Bush lied us into an illegal, criminal, immoral war. While he was doing this, Heart Attack Boy was outing the identity of a CIA agent. Both have compromised “homeland security” with their actions. These freeper jokes have been had, and had bad. What’s more, they know it; what’s even worse, they know that WE know it. Instead of enlisting to fight the war they so cherish, they troll websites they disagree with. It’s easy to shoot your mouth off about “Go Live Under Saddam” when Other People are the ones fighting for their “freedom.” You want the fairy tale about Iraq? Watch Faux News. You want the truth? Ask a soldier who has been there, like my brother.

  98. kjlovell says:

    Ryan,

Thanks, I knew the U.S. sold the chemical weapons Saddam used. I didn’t know that the evil Carlyle group was in on that one too.

I think the reason we haven’t heard dumbya say the words Osamma BinLaden has a great deal to do with the BinLadens and Bush family owning Carlyle group.

Please clarify for me, why was it a-ok for Carlyle group to sell the chemical weapons to be used, and look the other way for years after their use until now. But since Saddam used the weapons he is now on trial for it. But it is a-ok for the U.S. to use MK77 and our (p)resident to remain free for the same crimes?

    Just wondering.

From the Bush-controlled media? or first-hand experience? what? help me and the others out here. Don’t pull a Bill O’Reilly and say whatever you please without backing it up. That’s pathetic.

  112. Clembo says:

Brewster-Jennings seems to be one of the least understood and most damaging aspects of this entire story. Novak not only knowingly printed the name of Valerie Plame in his story, he came back in a second story and named the CIA front company Brewster-Jennings. Why would they do this? It’s one thing to out a single CIA “NOC” but another entirely to expose an entire operation. Think of the years and incredible cost (both human and financial capital) to establish such a front company. When that name is published foreign entities were immediately alerted to the potential danger of anyone even remotely associated with Brewster-Jennings. I find it outrageous that the White House could knowingly and willingly expose all the people who ever associated with Brewster-Jennings at risk and not get held to the fire for it. This is simply the high crime of treason during a time of war: no other way to describe it. How the general public can apathetically stand for this is beyond me? More importantly, the fact that Republicans WHO HAVE TO KNOW place loyalty to party over loyalty to country shows exactly how decidedly fascist they really are.
