“If tough, non-effete guys like Murtha are willing to go this far, and can make the case in ways that Red America can relate to… then the president is in big trouble. I’m sure there’s going to be an anti-Murtha pile-on in the conservative blogosphere, but from where I sit, conservatives would be fools not to take this man seriously.” (Via Hotline On Call)
I told you. Republicans want out of Iraq. They’re posturing for it. It’s done. SPEED IT UP!
“‘Stay they course’ is not a strategy. It’s a slogan”
-Sen. Carl Levin
(Carl’s my boy)
November 17th, 2005 at 1:11 pmI think the republican politicians and trolls should take him on. Everything ‘tough’ they’ve done this week has continued to sink them in the polls. Bush is now down to 34% as of yesterday and still sinking!
November 17th, 2005 at 1:14 pmRepubs would make a huge error to dump on this guy. Among the many things that make Repubs look bad today, smearing this man would look like the sourest of grapes to anyone, red state and blue state, Repub and Dem.
November 17th, 2005 at 1:14 pmBan jingoism. Ban Bush and his horse judging cronies.
Speak the truth, no matter how difficult it might be to face.
Thank you, John Murtha!
Yes, I fully expect the ReichWingNutWackJobs to try and trash/discredit/ruin John for having the audacity to speak truth to power.
November 17th, 2005 at 1:14 pm“The American public is way ahead of us”
-Murtha
November 17th, 2005 at 1:15 pmBoy oh boy, heckuva job, Mr Murtha. On the back of Cheney’s rabid trash-talking last night, the Dems lay down a monster this afternoon.
All while Chimpy is fast asleep somewhere in Asia. Beautiful. Absolutely, effing beautiful.
November 17th, 2005 at 1:23 pmwow, probably the most simple, direct and hard-hitting speech i’ve seen in a long time. John Kerry needs to hire this man’s speechwriter!!
November 17th, 2005 at 1:24 pmThat’s how brave Murtha is. He’s willing to stand up in the face of the smear machine.
November 17th, 2005 at 1:27 pmPerhaps Bill Kristol will get so depressed he’ll blow his own head off.
Looks like “mass graves” has become the latest hot phrase.
November 17th, 2005 at 1:32 pmSmear is all they know. There’s no way they can not smear this guy. In fact, Bush has already said his critics are aiding and abetting the enemy.
Looking forward to the rabid attacks. The more desperate they become, the more average beer chugging NASCAR watching (recruiter avoiding) hicks will see through it.
November 17th, 2005 at 1:36 pmDem’s need to get behind Murtha’s resolution. It’s the only logical way out. And to tell you the truth, his may be the type of voice necessary to move the country. He can’t be dismissed as “just another liberal wuss” or a flip-flopper for political purposes. He’s stepping up and we should back him.
November 17th, 2005 at 1:57 pm#11–you’re NEVER going to get the beer-chugging NASCAR hicks to see it. We will, hopefully, get the beer-chugging normal, moderate populace to recognize the farce that is our gov’t
November 17th, 2005 at 2:14 pmPunchy,
It’s already happened, only 34% of americans approve of bush… He’s already lost more nascar hicks than he can afford to!
November 17th, 2005 at 2:28 pmWhen all the Dems line up behind Murtha, the Reps will have a problem remaining behind Bush/Cheney and their fatal stay-the-course strategy.
November 17th, 2005 at 2:54 pmI have heard that troops will be taken from Afghanistan and replaced with NATO troops. To use their own words — is that not “cut and run.”
If we had stayed in Afghanistan and found OBL, we would not be where we are today. But Cheney wanted the Iraqi oil and Bush needed an “enemy” to support his own swaggering posture, so we enter Iraq and leave OBL to remain. Some strategy.
#8 bruce,
Kerry doesn’t need to hire Murtha’s speech writer, all he has to do is remove the political calculus (and focus group mentality) that he factors into his every word and tell the damn truth. It’s so much easier to just tell the truth, even if it’s painful at the time or it seems unpopular. Cliche’s become cliche for a reason. The truth will set you free. It’s the lying, the spinelessness and the pandering that keeps you spinning like a top.
Congress has exploded. Only the the most fascistic Republicans are staying onboard the S.S. Bushtanic (and some of them are even jumping off….see Santorum). How’d you like to be a fly on the wall while Bush gets his bad news updates this week? More saki please!
November 17th, 2005 at 3:09 pm“Until the public is willing to tell you where the insurgent is you’re not going to win this war”
-John Murtha, noting a statistic that 80% of Iraqis think attacks on coalition forces are justified.
November 17th, 2005 at 3:54 pmI’m with Murtha on this. I have respect for those who actually fought in a war.
Chickenhawks are lying little crybabies who should be jailed in my opinion.
November 17th, 2005 at 4:15 pmI saw Murtha either testifying or questioning someone in a committee a while back. He really, really ought to be Secretary of the Army. He knows more about the army — the nuts and bolts, funding, the detailed numbers — than the Joint Chiefs. His authority in those areas is unquestioned on the Hill, so his position on this matter will carry a lot of weight.
November 17th, 2005 at 5:52 pmSee my spoof of Murtha’s turnaround:

They are baffled I tell you, commpletely baffled.
