BREAKING: Hadley Being Coy About Whether He’s Woodward’s Source

From the a press briefing today:

Q Were you the administration official who talked with Bob Woodward about the identity of a CIA operative?

MR. HADLEY: I have seen press reports that — and only press reports — that Bob Woodward has talked about, I guess, three sources from the administration that he had. I’ve also seen press reports from White House officials saying that I am not one of his sources.

The AP adds:

Leaving the room, Hadley was asked if his answer amounted to a yes or a no. ”It is what it is,” he said.

Whoever is Woodward’s source could be in serious legal and political jeopardy. The WSJ reported yesterday:

The White House now must brace itself for the possibility that Mr. Fitzgerald’s probe, far from winding down, may have just gotten a second wind. Prosecutors deposed Mr. Woodward in anticipation of presenting that evidence to a new grand jury, according to a person familiar with the situation. The one that indicted Mr. Libby expired on Oct. 28. That could require that Mr. Card and the unnamed official be called to testify about their conversations with Mr. Woodward.

That the source only revealed the conversation with Woodward after Libby was indicted could indicate that he or she earlier provided false statements to investigators or lied to the grand jury.

but Hadley, that depends on what the meaning of “is” is!

  2. digger says:

It’s Hadley. And he’s going down.

  3. Wayne A. Schneider says:

#1 Pete, Are you sure it doesn’t depend on what the meaning of “it” is? :)

  4. WC says:

It depends on what the meaning of “conversation” is, as well as “source” and “press reports” and “false statements” and “treason,” to name a few.

  5. Average TV Viewer says:

Must suck being a criminal with the fuzz on your tail.

  6. jjw says:

It could just be a smoke screen. He could be just throwing people off the trail of someone else (like Cheney or Bush).

  7. hardass says:

i agree it’s smoke screen .More manipulation of the media . I have a feeling , only a gut feeling , Fitzgerald will bring the motives : the war in Iraq to the forefront. How can he bypass the issue , it becomes the scope of his investigations. The modus vivendi is subordinate to the end . Can the end justify the means ? Not in a democracy .

  8. Average TV Viewer says:

His reply is basically :I don’t know, was I?

    More hubris from the criminals.

  9. mysticagent says:

Wait. Press reports from the WH? Is that the same as “orders”? In other words, the WH is telling him to ‘hold the line’ – and he’s smart enough not to deny it, because if there is evidence against him it becomes damning to have denied it, and if there is no concrete evidence, he is probably in the clear, as long as he doesn’t incriminate himself. It’s tough to maintain a complex web of lies. And a few strands have already been pulled….

  10. Jay says:

Tell it to the prosecutor smartass!

  11. hardass says:

more on #7 , Woodward will spill the beans . This guy , can’t wait to unload the secrets he’s privy to . After all he is a journalist , his profession is to tell , he is no Amstrong Williams , he has a reputation to protect.

  12. kindness says:

C’mon, we all know this was orchestrated out of VP Cheney’s office. They are just trying to drag it out beyond the ‘06 elections so they don’t lose both the House AND the Senate.

I want the big Kahuna. Indict Cheney. make the sad sack of shit resign (not that he’d have the integrity to do so, he doesn’t).

    Happy weekend everyone.

  13. Peteykins says:

Hadley has always struck me as being realllllly strange; like really a freak.

  14. Dr. Strangelove says:

Why don’t we simply torture these nice folks to pursuade them to tell the truth? Of course, by that I mean only the approved methods of torture-aka-torture-lite. Sounds fair, right..little water boarding, little rabid dog in the face..little masturbation, simulated oral copulation, nude charades, all the kinky games the Right likes to play. Fiends.

  15. Zookeeper says:

I’d like to see him being coy in front of Fitzgerald.

  16. Tony W says:

#11 Woodward doesn’t have any reputation left to protect..The man drank the Bushie Kool-Aid and became a lying scumbag..

  17. The Subjective Scribe says:

    Devious doubletalking deceiver or blathering…

National Security Advisor Stephen Hadley’s tapdancing around a reporter’s question puts White House spokesliar Scott McClellan to shame. It’s a rare mastery of doubletalk that allows someone to use so many words to say absolutely nothing at all. Thi…

  18. Mike T. says:

Steven Hadley is also the guy who’s hiding the “Able Danger” information from Curt Weldon!

  19. Marie says:

Fitsgerald is convening another grand jury. His modus operandi is to indict the #2 man, squeeze him for all he is able, and then to after the kingfish. Raw Story believes Hadley is the original leaker — he used to work for Rice until she went to State, now he is NSA.
I am still hopeful that Cheney is the big fish.
Bush seems to be suffering stress, and I think he will crack if Rove and/or Cheney has to go.
These guys are all playing fast and loose with the law, with ethics and morality — they lack all moral sensibilities, have no ethical code — they are as corrupt as any mafia family or street gang or band of criminals as we have ever seen in this country.
What they have going for them is an extremely tight and cohesive network; what we have going for us is the truth and the standard of conduct we expect from our officials.

  20. Marie says:

Have you ever watched Hadley — I remember him from his background position when Rice was NSA. He took the fall for the 16 words in the SOTUS; but he was always trying to be unnoticed — a real behind-the-scenes guy. Now that he has spoken on tv several times, I get a really weird feeling when I see him.
    He can’t be trusted.

  21. Mark Marco says:

I’m calling the reichwing cabal to warn them, Marie is getting a really weird feeling! That CAN’T be good…..
