BREAKING: Scanlon Pleads Guilty

From CNN:

Well Wolf, Michael Scanlon, former partner of high-powered lobbyist Jack Abramoff just pled guilty in court at this hour. That is, we’re told by government officials, part of a plea deal that he worked out with the justice department. Those sources say as part of the deal, Scanlon has agreed to testify against Abramoff. The government last week accused Scanlon of conspiring with Abramoff to defraud clients, mostly Indian tribes. They were also accused of trying to corruptly influence a member of Congress with sports tickets, lavish trips, and campaign donations. A government source identified that Congressman as Bob Ney of Ohio… Now Wolf, as you mentioned, Scanlon is also an ex-aide to former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay. DeLay is also facing scrutiny for his associations with Abramoff.

The Abramoff scandal was described in the New York Times as potentially “the biggest scandal in Congress in over a century.”

THINK AGAIN:

Bloomberg reports that Rep. Bob Ney is in trouble:

Ney, chairman of the House Committee on Administration, who took an Abramoff-sponsored trip to Scotland in 2002, said earlier this month that prosecutors had subpoenaed records.

And Rep. Tom DeLay:

“It’s likely that Abramoff has lots of dirt on Tom DeLay,” McDonald said. “The further Abramoff sinks into trouble, the more likely he is to start pitching that dirt.”

And Sen. Conrad Burns:

Senator Conrad Burns, a Montana Republican, helped win a $3 million government award for the Saginaw Chippewa Tribe of Michigan to build a school, the Washington Post reported earlier this year. The Interior Department ruled the tribe was ineligible because its Soaring Eagle casino makes it one of the richest, the Post reported. The tribe, an Abramoff client, donated $32,000 to Burns from 2001 to 2003.

  20. Ryan Neat says:

So if the lobbyist pleaded guilty for selling favors, how are the republican apologists and liars going to deal with this? Clearly if he’s guilty of selling, at least someone is guilty of buying.

    If there’s a seller, there’s a buyer!

Wow, some congressmen/congresswomen must be $hitting bricks about now.

  21. cyncial ex-hippie says:

Sounds to me like an overzealous partisan prosecutor in collusion with an activist judge, misreported by the Soros-funded MSM trying to win over the Michael Moore wing of the liberal party.

  27. merciless says:

As soon as I read it, I thought about that guy in the Godfather II, holed up on an army base so the mafia couldn’t get to him. But somehow Tom made it in, and reminded him of the way the Romans “did it.”

I hope Mr. Scanlon is in a safe place, and that his wife and children are in an even safer one.

BTW, OF COURSE he flipped. None of these republican Nancy-boys ever thought they could get prison time.

“You can’t do that to me! I went to Harvard! I have connections! My father is a very rich and influential…

Oh. I guess you CAN do that to me.”

    LOL

  28. DTShannon says:

This is nice, but I’m waiting for Scott McClellan roll over on his bosses. It’ll never happen, of course, but what a great press conference that would be! “Hello, ladies and gentlement. Today I’m going to answer all questions asked — fully and honestly.” The infarcts would be popping all over the room.

This is a critical moment. The Bush administration and the Republicans in Congress are backed into a corner and trying to slash their way out by casting war critics as cowards. We’ve got to stay on the offensive so the debate about Iraq continues instead of fading away.

Or doesn’t. It reminds me how corrupt Ken Starr was. That’s the only difference.

Yeah Ken Starr really cleaned out government. Now we can sleep better knowing our public officials are faithful to their spouses.

McDougall wasn’t peddling influence, clearly your ‘metaphors’ and ability to discern relevant facts has made you a republican lawyer at the top of your game. No wonder it’s so hard to find a competent conservative jurist…

  50. Marie says:

There is about a scandal a week here in the last couple of months — the corruption and rot is so pervasive in this administration, it is just oozing out at all the weak points. Watch the show, but don’t stand too close!

    MK77 anyone?

  52. Mark Marco says:

#41 Ryan- They were all peddling influence…remember Gore taking bribes over the phone from the whitehouse and being stunned to find out that buddhist monks that take a vow of poverty shouldn’t be handing you million dollar checks. If only the government were bigger, there wouldn’t be so much corruption……

  56. Ryan Neat says:

    Mark,

That’s a phony scandal that was long ago debunked. You’re such a retarded republican – you’ve definitely found the party where you belong!

However the REAL scandal is the one where dozens of republicans may go to jail for peddling influence. Your ability to cognitively disassociate yourself from CURRENT reality should be a sign that you’re a whacko – it is to the rest of us!
