Cheney Rewrites The Headlines

Cheney Rewrites The Headlines

Vice President Dick Cheney began his speech at the American Enterprise Institute today with the following statement:

My remarks today concern national security, in particular the war on terror and Iraq front in that war. Several days ago, I commented on some recent statements that have been made by some members of Congress about Iraq. Within hours of my speech, a report went out on the wires under the headline quote, Cheney Says War Critics Dishonest, Reprehensible, endquote. The one thing I’ve learned in the last five years is that when you’re vice president you’re lucky if your speeches get any attention at all but I do have a quarrel with that headline.

Here’s exactly what Cheney said just a few days ago, on November 16:

And the suggestion that’s been made by some U.S. senators that the President of the United States or any member of this administration purposely misled the American people on pre-war intelligence is one of the most dishonest and reprehensible charges ever aired in this city.

To quote President Bush, it is “deeply irresponsible to rewrite history.”

UPDATE:
Cheney clarified later in the speech that he differentiates between war critics who believe the President misled the public into war and war critics who believe an exit strategy is needed. While he believes the latter is a patriotic group, the former is still “dishonest and reprehensible“:

What is not legitimate — and what I will again say is dishonest and reprehensible — is the suggestion by some U. S. senators that the President of the United States or any member of his administration purposely misled the American people on pre-war intelligence.

    I’m so happy he’s vp.

  7. AboveTheClouds says:

Cheney is really saying–Our plan will continue to be to “stay the course” even though staying the course is not working by any real or measurable standards.

Cheney is just trying to toss deck chairs off of the Titanic to delay the inevitable–the GOP ship is sinking and trying to blame others for their miserable record is working about as well as staying the course in Iraq.

Bush needs to “clean house” and get new advisors. Problem is, those who would give him this advise are those who should get the gong (Rove, Cheney, etc.). The “advise” he gets has put his approval ratings are all-time lows. Who wants to be a Republican running for office in 2006-2008 on this Admin’s record?

  8. Flamethrower says:

No one has still told Cheney about Google. Oh, Scooter’s busy.

  9. Robert says:

As much as I dislike “psychology via keyboard”, something is very wrong with Dick Cheney. I could at least respect the guy 13 years ago when he was DOD Secretary, but he several bricks shy of a full load now.

  10. Quisp says:

Hey Dick, go have yourself another stroke, whydontcha.

  11. The Northeast Dilemma says:

Poor liberals. Sorry that the Dems dissed you again. It’s sad when no one represents your radical interests.

  12. Zookeeper says:

To quote President Bush, it is “deeply irresponsible to rewrite history.”

An appropriate statement from the most irresponsible president (and administration) ever.

  13. LwordLover says:

How is this about radical interests? Where do you see that? What’s a liberal?

  14. Zookeeper says:

Lword, NED has trouble staying on-task.

  15. Jack says:

NED, looks like the “radical” Dems have made Cheney backtrack and beg for forgiveness

  16. Keith H. says:

    Cheney’s such a . . . . . Dick.

  17. MrTimPA says:

Could someone clue me into what this “radical agenda” that Dems and liberals is? NED, wwallace, tomaig? Anyone, anyone? :) (I sound like a certain scene in a movie)

  18. Keith H. says:

The only people who still take the time to listen to Cheney lie, are the people like Cheney himself, who don’t have the balls to admit they’ve made a mistake, or that they’ve been punked by their precious GOP.

  19. beep52 says:

Under the neo-con model you don’t have to be consistent or tell the truth. You have to convince enough people that you’re beyond reproach so that you get elected. Then, you can do whatever you want. They’re creating new realities here. We’re just trying to keep up.

  20. AboveTheClouds says:

The left’s radical agenda includes things like the truth and open discourse. It must make GOOPERS like NED steam when the US looks to the Democrats for fiscal responsibility and real conservative values like honesty, smaller government, and compassion. The 2006 and 2008 elections will be a time to see just how much America embraces those radical conservative ideas like scandal, death, debt, and corruption.

  21. Jeff says:

The radical agenda is: honesty in representation, a comprehensible foreign policy, universal health care, concern for ALL citizens not just the corporations, ending the rape and pillaging of “our” national resources, campaign finance reform, the end of judicial activism, employment based on merit instead of allegiance, a simplified, progressive tax code and, most importantly, the COMPLETE separation of church and State. Obviously, there are many other “radical” concepts that could be included, but I’ll stop here so the Reich-wing can soak this un-American notions in.

  22. Franco says:

Come on. As egregious as Cheney has been, you don’t quite have the goods here. Headline says he said “war critics” were reprehensible. What he actually called reprehensible was the suggestion (admittedly made by war critics) that “the administration purposely misled…”

It’s one thing to criticize the war. It’s a completely different thing to say that the administration lied to get us to go. Cheney is right that the headline misrepresented him (at least based on the evidence you present in this post).

The case against this administration is so compelling, there’s really no need to overstep. Equating “war critic” with “someone who believes the administration lied” is just a sure way to reduce the number of war critics.

  24. kjlovell says:

It is deeply irresponsible to rewrite history…..

Unless it is the Greedy Ole Parasites doing the writing.

Cheeney is STILL using the 9/11-Iraq link to try and bolster support for this illegal war, and to shore up the support for torture.

Twinkle Andress Cavanaugh (Repugnican elected official from Alabama), a guest on BSNBC’s connected just said that if you don’t support the war and this administration you are “un-American”. She also called Ron Reagan “un-American” 11:15 am Nov. 22, 2005. Can we really believe anything from someone named Twinkle?

  25. kjlovell says:

#11, go check the polls and tell us that you are ready to retract your idiotic statement.

34%, and we know the polls lean to the right so I suspect that 29% approval is all dumbya garners.

  26. MrTimPA says:

#26, kjlovell – what was idiotic about my statement? That the administration is becoming “unhinged” ? I don’t think that’s idiotic in any sense. Our “Great Leader” is definitely unhinged.

Oh, and thanks for the answers to my inquiry about this “radical” agenda – I knew it had something to do with actually having compassion for ALL Americans – how dare those “leftie liberals” care about ALL Americans. Go figure.

As for me – guilty as charged – I’m one of those “radical liberals” who actually does care about ALL Americans.

  27. Cyra Brown says:

These lyrics just popped into my brain…”Desperado, you’ve got to come to your senses… I wonder, did the WHOLE Bush administration ride the “short bus” to school? I mean really. Might as well call Cheney Cleopatra, he IS the “Queen of Denial”. what a loser.

  28. Greg says:

Some one really needs to explain this concept of video tape to our Vice President. He seems to not understand that people can actually tape his words and play them back at a later date. I have NEVER seem anyone in any public arena lie as often and get caught on tape as the VP.

  29. moral values, my ass » Poor Dick says:

[...] Why is this a lie? Think Progress has it all in black and white. [...]

  30. EvilCornbread says:

Um, there’s a difference between a “War Critic” and someone who says that “the President of the United States or any member of this administration purposely misled the American people on pre-war intelligence”.

It’s quite possible that you may be critical of the war and our competance in fighting it without believing that the administration intentionally misled the American public.

Cheney is right — that headline is overbroad and misleading.

  31. ron says:

Dream on, in the meantime your country is going to be bankcrupt. Thanks mister president!!!!

  32. Seixon says:

    Eh…

Cheney never said that war critics were dishonest, he said that those who were lying and rewriting history were. Try to keep up illiterate morons.

  33. ron says:

@ 34 Of course its already blokked! That always happens when you do a call for justice!

  34. ron says:

@ 33 your world is still flatt, isn’t it?!

  35. Thorny1 says:

This is the new mantra of the Mis-Administration: Critics are trying to “re-write” history. For “history” read “our spin.” Orwell never had it so good.

  36. dahreese says:

This speech was nothing more than the same speech he or Bush or Rumsfeld have given everywhere they go.

In reference to the “evidence” for war, Cheney didn’t say anything he hasn’t said before – all of which the administration has been unable to provide a sound foundation for or else it has been proven to the voters to be a lie.

Then he tries to make a case for war by saying that maybe WMD haven’t been found but it’s Saddam’s fault for not telling where they were. On top of that Cheney spins the inspectors thing again (in effect)by saying Saddam ran them out when in fact they had to leave in order not to be in Iraq when the attack began.

C’mon, Dickey boy, give us a little credit.

  37. Jon says:

I third Franco/Sexion’s comments – the headline was a very misleading interpretation, the kind I’ve come to expect from a few Republicans in recent months, and I’m disappointed that so few people seem able to acknowledge it when a non-Republican makes a misleading interpretation too.

  38. Stephen says:

Let me see if I understand what Cheney said…If you are a war critic and you claim that somehow and in someway this administration played fast and loose with the intelligence facts then you are making a dishonest and reprehensible charge. Thus it is up to you my D&R opponent to prove your claims. Of course since the use of executive priviledge and war secrets nonsense it is doubtful whether any critics will even get close to the truth from this administration. What a shell game!!!!I sure love the way this administration openly abuses it power. However, after all is said and done it´s nice to see that there is some discomfort by those in the Whitehouse.

“And the suggestion that’s been made by some U.S. senators that the President of the United States or any member of this administration purposely misled the American people on pre-war intelligence is one of the most dishonest and reprehensible charges ever aired in this city”

He was talking about some senators not war critics. I don’t think he has a problem with war critics just senators that have changed their mind for political reasons…

Sorry, guys, but I regret that I have to agree with wwallace & company here. A few days ago TP posted this announcement:

Reading this, it is the notion that is dishonest and reprehensible, not any one person or persons.

Saying that “wwallace made a reprehensible remark” is not the same as saying “wwallace is reprehensible.”

(Even though in his/her case, we’d like to believe it is the same…ha.)

  47. Ryan Neat says:

wwallace – you’re projecting again, monkey boys and girls like you are the ones who need the meds :()

  48. Ryan Neat says:

    Besides,

There’s enough evidence now that Bush DID manipulate the intelligence, than only those who deny it are dishonest and reprehensible – that would be monkey boy/girl wwallace :()

  49. Burt Kratz says:

Cheney Flip flopped on what he said. Then he flop flipped in the same speech, then later on in the same sppech he flipped flopped again. Then he flop flipped. Man, how do you keep up with this dude?

  50. DS says:

#28 — You’d think that after getting caught lying three or four times (”I never said that” / “Here’s the video tape of you saying just that.”) he’d tire of having egg on his face constantly. I think there are just enough people who believe him regardless of the tape — and, sadly, too few media outlets that put his feet to the fire when he claims not to have said something he did say. What incentive does he have to tell the truth since the lies and misdirections have worked so well so far?

Someone should tell him that the Jedi Mind Trick doesn’t work if you’re not a Jedi.

    In today from europe.

” The senior BND [german intelligence] officer who supervised Curveball’s case said he was aghast when he watched Mr Powell overstate Curveball’s case. “We were shocked,” he said. “We had always told them it was not proven … It was not hard intelligence.”

That’s called misrepresenting intelligence, and lying to go to war.

Republicans DID lie about the intelligence, as this clearly indicates.

  53. NYCStreetThug says:

Do those AXE Deodorant commercials actually SAy you’re gonna’ get some serious babe action just by spraying your pits with their product?
    No.
So I guess (if you owned stock in the company or worked for them) you could still say with a straight face “we didn’t lie” or “they didn’t mislead”. It’s called Marketing or Advertising.

Not like we should expect more from our elected leaders in the course of them actually performing their job functions.

I guess the American public was just reading something into Cheney’s (multiple) statements that Cheney did not mean to imply.

    Like today when he said:

“A precipitous withdrawal from Iraq would be a victory for the terrorists, an invitation to further violence against free nations and a terrible blow to the future security of the US,”

He’s not fear-mongering. He’s not saying ‘we’ll have to fight them over here’. It’s just an “invitation”. He DID NOT SAY they would accept it.

    Shameless.

Seems even the trolls on this blog are getting tired, they appear to “be in their last throes”, only it really is their last throes.

Krash-cart-cheeney lies so much he has to have someone else call his dog.

The entire sane population of the world know that this administration (laugh) played fast and loose with the “facts” and cherry picked the goodies to feed the kids with the kool-aid.

If the WH spin docs can keep people fighting, they feel they can take the attention off their criminal behavior and the war crimes not to mention the fact that they can no longer say the words Osama BinLaden.

Osama who?…. Oh yes the guy that was not from Iraq, that was not supported by Saddam and the guy this whole quagmire was started over… where were we looking for him before we stopped looking for him? Oh yes, that was NOT Iraq, it was Afganistan.

Getting ready for the perp walk out of the WH, and looking forward to monkey boy and krash-cart going to “the tropics”.

  57. jlyons says:

The question is: Has Cheney _ever_ told the truth in the course of this adminiostration? Anyone recall that tiny, weathered camper that for months he insisted, despite all evidence to the contrary, was a high-tech mobile WMD lab? He looked straight into his interviewers’ eyes, repeatedly, and lied to their – and our – faces.

  59. David Frost says:

This is long for a post here, but well worth the read…These are DICK Cheney’s words spoken after George I pulled out of Iraq

“And the question in my mind is how many additional American casualties is Saddam worth? And the answer is not very damned many. So I think we got it right, both when we decided to expel him from Kuwait, but also when the president made the decision that we’d achieved our objectives and we were not going to go get bogged down in the problems of trying to take over and govern Iraq. All of a sudden you’ve got a battle you’re fighting in a major built-up city, a lot of civilians are around, significant limitations on our ability to use our most effective technologies and techniques. Once we had rounded him up and gotten rid of his government, then the question is what do you put in its place? You know, you then have accepted the responsibility for governing Iraq. Now what kind of government are you going to establish? Is it going to be a Kurdish government, or a Shi’ia government, or a Sunni government, or maybe a government based on the old Baathist Party, or some mixture thereof? You will have, I think by that time, lost the support of the Arab coalition that was so crucial to our operations over there, I would guess if we had gone in there,”

“I would still have forces in Baghdad today, we’d be running the country. We would not have been able to get everybody out and bring everybody home ….”
