Bush Said He Would Withdraw U.S. Forces If The Iraqis Asked

On Monday, Iraqi political leaders called on the U.S. to set a timetable for withdrawal. In January, President Bush said that if asked by the Iraqis, U.S. forces would leave the country:

President Bush said in an interview on Thursday that he would withdraw American forces from Iraq if the new government that is elected on Sunday asked him to do so, but that he expected Iraq’s first democratically elected leaders would want the troops to remain as helpers, not as occupiers.

Bush has now been asked to withdraw. Will he stick to his word?

(Thanks to reader chill for the tip.)

Of course he will. He says what he means, and he means what he says... Right?

  2. Citizen80203 Says:

I wonder what the administration’s plan will be in coming year?

“Swift dramatic action from a steadfast leader” when codpiece annouces “our mission has been accomplished, the terrorists are in retreat. It is time for us to withdraw from Iraq.”

Will it help with the 2006 midterms? Remember, they CAN NOT LOSE EITHER THE HOUSE OR SENATE, if they do they whole can of sh*t of GOP governence will be exposed. So, how much of the constitution will be “set aside” to hold on to power? Because, loss of power would be fatal to them.

The Iraqis are "emboldening" the enemy!

  4. FedUp Says:

We won't, cuz it's about the oil.

  5. Jesus Christ God of WAR Says:

Bush? Keep his "word"? Which one? And I doubt even the easiest "word" could be kept by that guy!

    Impeach Bush NOW!

  6. Andrew C Says:

If this is true (i trust it), will it be brought to his (or reporters/press secretary) attention today or tomorrow??

    It better.

  7. Citizen80203 Says:

    Fedup

Oil is secondary, holding power is primary. Without power their cronies will lose the oil contracts. With power there will be other options.

  8. Zwack Says:

The original passage contains a typo, the word not was moved later in the passage... It was really

"President Bush said in an interview on Thursday that he would not withdraw American forces from Iraq if the new government that is elected on Sunday asked him to do so, but that he expected Iraq’s first democratically elected leaders would want the troops to remain as helpers, as occupiers."

Will King George leave Iraq before he blows up al-Jazeera?

"...The Daily Mirror reported that Bush spoke of targeting Al-Jazeera's headquarters in Doha, Qatar, when he met Blair at the White House on April 16, 2004. The Bush administration has regularly accused Al-Jazeera of being nothing more than a mouthpiece for anti-American sentiments..."

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20051122/ap_on_re_eu/britain_iraq

... BushCo targeted journalists and so far has gotten away with it. So what will now be reported about his promise to leave Iraq if asked? Or has the media been "put in it's place" through selected killings?

  10. HeyMan Says:

Bush will withdraw only if its proven illegal to be in Iraq. Since Iraqis are new to this process, they are not capable of deciding whats good for them.

  12. Citizen80203 Says:

I disagree with those who say Bu$h will not withdrawal. He will to ensure that power is retained here. Make no mistake, it is now about holding on to power in 2006. To let the Dems have subpoena power in either house of congress would be fatal to the GOP. Just look at what is happening without subpoena power investigations, and imagine what would happen if administration officials were compelled under oath to testify.

    Why start now?

  14. Scott Says:

Ok, here is what we should do: Sell Iraq to the highest bidder. It would be good business. Not only would it help to pay back some of the expenses of this fiasco, but it would make it okay for us to get out of there while saving face. It would also put in place a new owner who has good motivation to stay for a while and clean the place up. For all the money we've spent on this mess, we are quite unwelcome there, and that is not going to change. If the current new Iraqi government wants to buy the place, thats great. they can have it. In the increasingly likely event that we end up unhappy with the new leadership that we are putting in place at great expense, we can just re-invade them a couple years down the road. You know, like how we armed Saddam then later decided that maybe hadn't been the best plan, so we went back over there and asked to get our toys back. I'm betting we might not be so keen the government thats going in now, so we should at least try to get some cash from them first to help defer the cost of our next war with them.

You guys know this isn't the first time.

Here is Paul Bremer saying would leave back in May of 2004.

    MSNBC
    May 14, 2004
Bremer says U.S. will leave Iraq if new government asks
    http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/4978361/

“If the provisional government asks us to leave we will leave,” Bremer said, referring to an Iraqi administration due to take power June 30. “I don’t think that will happen, but obviously we don’t stay in countries where we’re not welcome.”

Here is a Boston Globe story from the next day.

    Boston Globe
    May 15, 2004
If asked, US says, it would leave Iraq
    http://www.boston.com/news/nation/articles/2004/05/15/if_asked_us_says_it_would_leave_iraq/

"''We're there to support the Iraqi people and protect them and the new government," Powell said at a news conference with other foreign ministers from the Group of Eight nations. ''I have no doubt the new government will welcome our presence and am losing no sleep over whether they will ask us to stay."

But were the new government to say it could handle security, ''then we would leave," Powell said."

  18. Southwest Bob Says:

The recent elections chilled the GOP ~ it's clear the reaction was to move away from bush/cheney. There is no doubt that losing control of congress would be a bush/cheney nightmare and this is all about turning a failure into a "success." Wait to see if they exit request includes leaving the bases ~ No way the neo-cons will agree to give up a military presence in Iraq....!

  21. RemoveBush Says:

People, the only way to ensure that the administration is dealt with is to continuously contact your congressman and senators on a bi-weekly basis. I have begun writting to them 2x a week. I ask them to provide an update to my questions and I include the original letter in the email.

Unless everyone does this, there is very little that the house and senate will do. Please be pro-active and contact them with questions you have and DEMAND that the president and vice president be impeached. They lied, or at least provided false information, to the house and senate and that is a direct violation of the constitution (an impeachable offense). This is not lying about getting a blow job in the WH, this has caused over 2000 lives.

Stop pussy footing around and just complaining. Do something that can make a difference.

    Dear Senator Levin:
I am writing because I am really bothered and upset that our representatives have allowed the WH and it’s administration to perform all of the lies and mis-conducts it has without question. I thought that the people in the House and Senate were suppose to be representing the American people and not the WH or their own needs.
Here are some facts that I am wondering why no one is even interested in getting answers too.
    1) Why was the WTC detonated. Yes they were brought down by explosives. I am an engineer and the WTC collapses breaks all physics rules for a natural collapse. There is ABSOLUTELY no way a building can collapse at a free fall rate without assistance. The WTC’s fell at about 16 seconds. That is only 5 seconds longer than if you were to drop a brick from the top of the WTC’s. This is Impossible. The resistance of each floor would have added at least 1 second per floor for a collapse. So given that there were 100 floors, that would mean that the towers should have fallen somewhere around 1 minute total. Also, there is no way they would have fell down on it’s self. It would have shifted to one side or the other. In fact, it did as it started to fall. The top part of one of the towers did start to topple to one side, but then miraculously straightened it’s self on the way down. How can thousands of tons of metal stop from falling to one side without help? Also, WTC 7 was not hit by a plane and only sustained minor damage. Yet it collapsed in a controlled manner as well. There have been fires in buildings before that were hotter, yet they did not collapse. So why WTC 7? There were buildings all around the WTC’s, yet only those buildings collapsed. This is not an accident, this was planned. Perhaps it worked out that these planes were going to be hijacked and someone knew about it and just let it happen. It does not matter what the case is, more could have/should have been done to prevent more than 1 plane from hitting any building.
    2) Where was the Air Force? I can understand the first plane perhaps getting by the confusion, and maybe even the second plane. However, there is no way that 4 planes can go that long without being intercepted by the AF. The plane that hit the pentagon flew for 45 minutes out of radar contact before hitting the Pentagon, not to mention that it was flying in restricted air space over Washington DC. This was not by accident! Someone prevented the AF from launching air craft to intercept these planes. There is only one place I can think of that has that kind of power, the WH.
    3) The evidence needed to prove/dis-prove any allegations was conveniently destroyed. There was no true investigation into the matter, and what ever investigation was performed was not complete enough. From what I have heard and read, the 9/11 commission was blocked from seeing all of the needed/requested material, so how could they be expected to make an accurate conclusion. Everyone who has even been associated with 9/11 has been gagged, and why would that be? The reason is because the WH does not wish for the real story to be told. The video of the pentagon has not been released, there has been no video or stills taken of the WTC, except what the WH wants people to see. The mayor of NY ordered it illegal to take pictures of any sort of the area. Why? Because there might be some evidence caught on tape that they could not control.
I am not a conspiracy theorist. I look at the evidence and draw conclusions. The largest evidence regarding 9/11, and strongly supports that our country was attacked by people within the government, are items 1 and 2 of above.
As a representative of the people, I expect that something is done about this now. This has been brushed under the rug long enough and our country is being hijacked by people who do not have any concern for the American people and are only looking after their own interests.
I demand that the house begins impeachment proceedings on President Bush and Vice President Cheney. By falsely linking AlQueda to Sadam and presenting partial information to the House and Senate, they have broken the law of the constitution. This is an offense which warrants impeachment. I do not affiliate myself to any political party, and I vote for the best person. I have seen nothing from this Administration but dishonesty, and betrayal to the American public. It is your duty as a representative to do something about this, and I expect you to do your job.
One other thing… I watched Congressman Weldon the other day state “There is a Cover up” regarding 9/11 on TV, so I know that people are asking questions but they are being blocked by the WH. He has supposedly instructed the IG to begin a criminal investigation into the matter. What is the status of this criminal investigation?
I look forward to your actions and your reply.
    Regards

Your conspiracy theory not withstanding, don't you think that it is more relevant to look at the concrete. Like how the administration was negligent in pre 911? Or how they hyped the Iraqi threat? Or better yet, focus on 2006 and getting back to power?

    http://www.usatoday.com/news/world/iraq/2004-04-28-poll-cover_x.htm

"But while they acknowledge benefits from dumping Saddam a year ago, Iraqis no longer see the presence of the American-led military as a plus. Asked whether they view the U.S.-led coalition as "liberators" or "occupiers," 71% of all respondents say "occupiers.""

This is the reason the Iraqis asked us to leave frist thing. They weren't worried about feeding the hungry, getting infrastructure back up and running, or pumping oil.

The most important thing for them is the US leaving.

  33. SKdeA Says:

HEY #22 - I agree that 9/11 was intentional, but a couple of things that make it even worse than your scenario:
A: The Pentagon - where were the wings? That was no plane, that was a missile. Why else did they confiscate the videos? But not all, I have seen one online showing a cylindrical object, no wings visible, moving perfectly horizontal to the ground before punching a nice neat hole inthe (coincidentally empty!) section of the Pentagon. No wings, no debris, no reason to think it was a plane.
B: Al Quaeda doesn't actually exist. It is the name of a database operated by the CIA and the Saudis (Bush's buddies) since the 70s, to track the shipments of arms and cash to the Afghanis fighting the Soviets. It has become a wonderful boogyman to scare the public with.
The B above is something I got while following a recent thread here on TP, it is truly frightening.
Bush and his cronies planned and executed 9/11.
So why take these murderers at their word?

  34. Nancy L. Says:

Isn't one of the reasons, why Bush Co won't leave Iraq, is they see Iran, as the hungry wolf, at the door, ready to pounce, once we leave? Personally, I was against going in, the first time around. I think it's the biggest fiasco, this admin. has created. I know, at one time, Dubya was making noises at Iran, but have heard little since. Anyone care to update me. And does anyone feel that Iran will sneak or run boldly to take over, if and when we leave.

Bush said he would withdraw U.S. forces if...

A Think Progress reader reminds us something Bush said earlier this year:

  37. K Says:

This directly contradicts Bush's earlier statement that there will be no leaving of Iraq as long as he is president.

  38. RemoveBush Says:

#24, These are my questions, as I have said write your own questions to your house and senate representatives and ask them the question not me. If everyone here who has something to say would do this then I think that we would begin to see some changes in washington. Until then though, the Bushies will continue to do what every they want because they know that they will not get any real opposition.

Yes, my statements may sound like a "conspiracy theory", but look at the evidence. If you are not an engineer or have a stong engineering background, then I suggest that you pick up some books on physiscs and learn how gravity works and how fast things can fall.

Ask yourself this, how can only the buildings of WTC fall???? No other buildings surrounding WTC fell at all. WTC 7 fell in a controlled manner and it only had minor fire damage. How is this possible????

Where was the Air Force on this day??? In no other time in American history has any plane been alowed to fly more than 10 minutes out of contact of ATC. So why on 9/11 did 4 planes get this priviledge? And NEVER has any plane been allowed to fly into restricted air space of DC, so why was it allowed on 9/11?

Why is anyone who has knowledge of 9/11 been gagged and not allowed to talk to anyone, not even the House or Senate????

Things are not adding up, unless you just ignore them and that is what the WH is hopping and guess what that is happening.

If people were to ask similar questions about these and other situations, then the WH would be impeached and all of those individuals would probably go to jail for murder, conspiracy to commit murder, treason, etc.

So you see it is in the best interrest of the WH to squash anyone who asks questions.

All I am proposing is that you find questions that you feel are important and ask them vigurously.

  40. Marie Says:

Bush said he would leave when asked because he was conducting the "reconstruction" in Iraq so they would not be ready to ask for a long time -- time enough for Bush's friends to be all set to run the economy of Iraq.
Will the MSM hold Bush' feet to the fire on his declaration? Don't hold your breath. Regardless of anything else, they are joined at the hip with the Bushies.
Everything will be skewed now to keeping the Democrats from a landslide in toppling every Republican up for reelection.

  64. Jericho Says:

I have a comment. Why do the Iraqi's have to ask Bsuh anything? It's a sovereign nation, right? Did anyone hear Bush ask the Iraqi people if it would be ok to remove evil Saddam from power? Wouldn't the world be better off had it been evil Bush who was removed from power? Does Bush ask anyone anything before he does his busy-ness? He didn't even ask his own people if they were ok with him 'winning' (read as stealing) the 2000 election? Were his religious friends ok with him starting a cold war for all the wrong reasons instead of turning the other cheek on 9/11? Nobody is ok with Bush not asking questions for all the missteps he does. But for all the ones in despair I have something to keep you warm at night: "It's less bad to have some injustice done to you, than it is to be and live injust."

Companies waiting in the wings for Iraqi riches... this is also inetersting reading explaining why all major news groups are withholding the story of Iraq asking the US to set a timetable for withdrawing troops .....After next month's elections, when a new Iraqi government takes over and contracts are signed it will become clearer how much oil was part of London and Washington's pre-war plans.

  67. roberto Says:

Why is it okay for the Iraqi's to tell the U.S. to withdraw, but when the American public wants the same thing, Bush calls it "cut and run"? Shouldn't the president follow the will of his own citizens and not that of foreign governments?

  68. Tom Says:

We're not going to leave Iraq for at least 15-20 years. There is an oil industry that is incredibly lucrative, and has been neglected for decades.

Besides, it is better to fight the terrorists "over there", than here in the good ole US of A, right? Nevermind that the terrorism did not exist in Iraq until we invaded and occupied it. But what the hell, imperialism is messy sometimes....

  69. Mary Says:

Who said the Reps. won't be reelected...the wide spread voter fraud and trickery in the last two elections show that THEY WILL BE IN OFFICE AGAIN.

Votes are manipulated to reflect the result they want.

But then again, maybe he will just suspend the Constitution and STAY in office.

  70. Joshua Holm Says:

I personally think that Bush is a lier. Im now going to be joining the Marine corp in 3 moths and i will either go and fight for our US of A or he did stick to his word so we shall see.
