Iraqi Leaders Call On U.S. To Set Timetable

Iraqi Leaders Call On U.S. To Set Timetable»

On June 28, 2005, President Bush explained why we can’t set a timetable for withdrawal. According to Bush, it would send the wrong message to Iraqis:

Some contend that we should set a deadline for withdrawing U.S. forces. Let me explain why that would be a serious mistake. Setting an artificial timetable would send the wrong message to the Iraqis, who need to know that America will not leave before the job is done.

Now, in an unusual show of unity, the Iraqis sent a message to President Bush:

Leaders of Iraq’s sharply divided Shiites, Kurds and Sunnis called Monday for a timetable for the withdrawal of U.S.-led forces in the country and said Iraq’s opposition had a “legitimate right” of resistance.

Looks like President Bush needs a new excuse. Much more on this story at AmericaBlog.

UPDATE: From the Washington Post, 5/15/04:

Secretary of State Colin Powell emphatically said yesterday that if the incoming Iraqi interim government ordered the departure of foreign troops after June 30, they would pack up without protest, but emphasized he doubted such a request would be made.

… “If the provisional government asks us to leave, we will leave,” Bremer said, referring to an Iraqi administration due to take power June 30. “I don’t think that will happen, but obviously we don’t stay in countries where we’re not welcome.”

    EXCLUSIVE: BUSH PLOT TO BOMB HIS ARAB ALLY

    Madness of war memo
    By Kevin Maguire And Andy Lines

    PRESIDENT Bush planned to bomb Arab TV station al-Jazeera in friendly Qatar, a “Top Secret” No 10 memo reveals.
    But he was talked out of it at a White House summit by Tony Blair, who said it would provoke a worldwide backlash.
    A source said: “There’s no doubt what Bush wanted, and no doubt Blair didn’t want him to do it.” Al-Jazeera is accused by the US of fuelling the Iraqi insurgency.

    The attack would have led to a massacre of innocents on the territory of a key ally, enraged the Middle East and almost certainly have sparked bloody retaliation.
    A source said last night: “The memo is explosive and hugely damaging to Bush.”

    Right on Iraqis!! Right on Iraqis!!! Bushie will spin this too. The Iraqis know what they want to do.

    There are sooo many Spin Stories out there. Thats what is saving the Current Administration.
    (The no-Spin Zone?) Give me a break.

  5. Mary Poppin Says:

    I think this so funny. How is the Republican Party going to spin this. BRING OUR TROOP HOME. YES!! YES!!

  6. Tony W Says:

    Seems like the Iraqi Puppets now want us to set a timetable..So using the chickenhawks logic a) the Iraqis want to embolden the insurgents B) want Bin Laden and Zaquari to run the country and C) turn Iraq into a training ground for Al Quida….I guess the A Team in the White House is just sitting around saying “I love it when a plan comes together”

  7. Keith H. Says:

    Don’t suppose Bushco can refuse to set the timetable now. I’m wondering how they will try to claim that they changed their mind and it’s now their idea.

  8. Gryn Says:

    I think another important aspect is that the Iraqi’s are a bit peeved that we lump the terrorists who attack Iraqi civilians together with the insurgents who attack the our troops. The need for Republicans for this bit of propaganda is trumping the Iraqis need to negotiate with representatives of the insurgency.

    Remember that the Iraqis have to live with these people long after we are gone. Deliberate attacks against civilians is one of the few rules of warfare that is universally agreed to as “a very bad thing” and we do civilians a disservice by deliberately confusing attacks against troops as equivalent to terrorism against civilians.

    As long as we are on their territory they cannot quell the violence since at this point the vast majority of Iraqis see the insurgent attacks against us as understandable. This is true even for people who are not antogonistic to the US like these Iraqi leaders.

  9. Pablo in Mexico Says:

    This was the reason for the Chalabi visit to the US. He got the message across to Chainsaw that this was going to happen.

    What now? King George does not have a leg to stand on, they have been cut out from under him.

    Have another drink Georgie Porgie.

  10. Vice President Richard Cheney Says:

    if the current iraqi gvt won’t play ball, we’ll need to replace them with one that does.

    Maybe Chalabi will be more cooperative?

  11. ElectricBassPlayer Says:

    Yet another reason why Bush and the NeoCons actually hate democracy, no matter what they claim.

  12. Pete Bogs Says:

    now that THEY are asking for a deadline, can Bush and Cheney continue to criticize Americans for doing so? it’ll certainly be harder to justify…

  13. Southwest Bob Says:

    So, now the basic reason for this “war” will come to the front. . . What to do with all those American military bases? This effort wasn’t intended to benefit Iraq but US oil companies. It will be interesting to see how “building democracy” will be transitioned into “protecting American” interests while managing to keep it connected to terrorism. This should be interesting.

  14. Mary Poppin Says:

    Pablo in Mexico You are right, Chalabi came here to give us a message that they wanted us out of Iraq. How will the Republican spin this?

  15. Mary Poppin Says:

    Now the tax payers won’t have to pay for the Iraqi war. We can take care of business at home like helping the American people that need it.

  16. Dennis in KC Says:

    It’s hard any more not to read a conspiracy into everything–is this a case of the puppet government being told to say this, giving the Bushies a way to start withdrawing troops and proclaim victory just in time for the ‘06 elections? They’d spin it as not “cutting and running” because the Iraqis requested it, meaning they’re ready to stand on their own.

  17. WaltTheMan Says:

    Time for regime change 2? If it happens, let it happen here, not over there.

  18. Dumb Fox Says:

    Pablo, Mary P, people… Chalabi’s business in DC was the following:

    http://www.neweconomics.org/gen/news_crudedesigns.aspx

    No wonder Dick was so willing to meet him and so unwilling to talk to the world about it.

  19. Jennty Says:

    #17 You know Dennis that same thought had crossed my mind. It does seem somewhat contrived. Given that the current regime in the WH has done EVERYTHING with the political thought in mind, this does seem to play just too pat with aiming at the 06 elections. The only thing you can count on with these guys is that they will try to trickf**k the system for their own advantage. God, I hope we’re wrong though.

  20. chill Says:

    Bushie said we’d leave if they asked nice:

    WASHINGTON, Jan. 27 – President Bush said in an interview on Thursday that he would withdraw American forces from Iraq if the new government that is elected on Sunday asked him to do so, but that he expected Iraq’s first democratically elected leaders would want the troops to remain as helpers, not as occupiers.

  22. David Model Says:

    How inhospitable. After all we have done for them. Someone should remind the Iraqis that:
    1. In 1991, we bombed their infrastructure;
    2. In 1991, we bombed their industrial and agricultural base;
    3. In 1991, we killed over 100,000 Iraqis;
    4. In 1990, we imposed sanctions that ultimately killed over 1 million people;
    5. From 1991 to 2002, we continuously bombed Iraq;
    6. In 2003, we bombed Iraq again;
    7. Since 2003, we have militarily occupied their country and wantonly destroyed all or parts of cities and killed tens of thousands more Iraqis.

    And they want us to leave. Well, I never!!!

    Sorry I am a little off topic.

    all is fair in love and war. If it means everybody suffers, then that’s fine with the bush cabal too.

    Will it help with the 2006 midterms? Remember, they CAN NOT LOSE EITHER THE HOUSE OR SENATE, if they do they whole can of sh*t of GOP governence will be exposed. So, how much of the constitution will be “set aside” to hold on to power? Because, loss of power would be fatal to them.

    200 billion dollars have been frittered out the window over in Iraq.

    My delusions are correct.

    George Bush prayed to God and God told him what to do.

    George is off the hook. If God said it was ok, then it is His responsibility, not George’s.

    I got a feeling it was done for economic reasons.

    God wouldn’t be foolish enough to tell George it was ok to go to war. George was foolish enough to believe that it was God actually telling him what to do.

    I don’t know who had George’s ear bent when he was reverently praying, but I don’t think it was God whispering in his ear. Georges

    He should pray to God to get permission to withdraw American and coalition forces from Iraq. If he would do that, he would be doing some praying. God will give him the answer he’s looking for, not one somebody else has given him.

    Might be a good idea. George getting rid of everybody around him and he just sit alone in the Oval Office. He could free his mind. Become a President of One.

    He might be able to grin and bear it.

    […] This matters because it turns out the Iraqi government now wants the US to leave, and has even declared that attacks on Americans are no longer considered terrorism, but legitimate acts of resistance. I’m gonna guess DeWine still supports what former Secretary of State Colin Powell and former ambassador Paul Bremer once said was Bush Administration policy, namely that the US would leave when Iraqis tell us to leave. 45. Innocent Bystander Says:

    So what’s the going price of one old, defanged leader?

    By this administration’s calculations:

    * 2100 American Soldiers
    * 15000 American severely wounded
    * 30,000+ Iraqi’s dead
    * 100,ooo Iraqi’s wounded
    * $250BB+ in Treasury
    * The takedown of the most moderately secular state in the ME
    * Our international reputation

    And still, Osama bin Laden, the acknowledged leader behind the 9/11 attack is somewhere free, laughing his ass off.

    That statement smacks of arrogance. Besides, you should care because American troops are in Iraq. It is their country, their rules. And their rule now is:

    “Though resistance is a legitimate right for all people, terrorism does not represent resistance. Therefore, we condemn terrorism and acts of violence, killing and kidnapping targeting Iraqi citizens and humanitarian, civil, government institutions, national resources and houses of worship”

    In a nutshell: Killing Iraqis -not ok. Killing foreign troops -perfectly legitimate resistance.

The chemical weapons were spirited over the border into Syria and the biological and nuclear agents were projected into Iran. Obviously you don’t take well new you don’t like, but this is ridiculous. You have outdone yourself now.

    The Iraqi Reconciliation Conference was held in Cairo under the auspices of the Arab League. Other news say the event was sponsored by the League.

    In case case, the Arab League did not issue the communique -they merely facilitated the conference in preparation for another, bigger conference to be held in January. The communique was written and signed by leaders of the three main Iraqi factions. Not by the League.

    One of the Iraqi leaders participanting in the conference was Raad a-Alousi, ambassador to the Arab League. Iraq has an ambassador to the League, because they are one of the founding members: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arab_League

    Of course such an important event would be held under the auspices of the League. And -needless to say- with the approval of the U.S.

    Not bloody likely with our approval. Everything you need to know about the Iraqi delegation to this meaningless meeting of like minded terrorist supporters is here…

    “The final communique, hammered out at the end of three days of negotiations at a preparatory reconciliation conference under the auspices of the Arab League, condemned terrorism, but was a clear acknowledgment of the Sunni position that insurgents should not be labeled as terrorists if their operations do not target innocent civilians or institutions designed to provide for the welfare of Iraqi citizens.”

    Of course they are talking out of both sides of their face as most of the real damage done in Iraq has been to Iraqi Shi’ite civilians by the Sunni as they began early on targeting schools, hospitals and infrastructure.

    This is a blatant attempt to draw criticism away from the real purpose of the terrorists which is to terrorize the common Iraqi and hold them hostage and make it seem that if only the Americans would leave there would be peace. Guess what? It’s not going to work.

  65. I-RIgHT-I Says:

    Hey John Murtha, you’d better hurry up and surrender before our enemies do.

    Of course the Arab League is seething.

    Several insurgents groups have contacted President Jalal Talabani’s office in the past few days, with some saying they are ready to lay down their arms and join the political process, the presidential security adviser said Thursday. […]

    Talabani said last weekend in Egypt he was ready for talks with anti-government opposition figures as well as Baathists. He called the Sunni-led insurgents to lay down their weapons and join the political process.

    “Many groups have called and some of them clearly expressed the readiness to join the political process,” al-Samaraei said. This shows that “the initiative was welcomed by Iraqis.”

    In the western province of Anbar, members of some militant groups told the AP that they had been in talks with Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Chalabi for about two weeks but would not say how they were going.

  66. I-RIgHT-I Says:

    I wonder if the King would have been so bold without the US Marines so close at hand? Fat chance.

    AMMAN, Jordan — Jordan’s King Abdullah II urged his new prime minister Thursday to launch an all-out war against Islamic militancy in the wake of the triple hotel bombings earlier this month that killed 63 people.

    In a letter to newly appointed Prime Minister Marouf al-Bakhit, Abdullah said the Nov. 9 bombings “increase our determination to stick to our reform and democratization process, which is irreversible.”

    “At the same time, it reaffirms our need to adopt a comprehensive strategy to confront the Takfiri culture,” Abdullah said, referring to the ideology adopted by Al Qaeda and other militants who condone the killing of those they consider infidels.

  67. I-RIgHT-I Says:

    Another kind of war protestor….YIKES!!!

    The leader of Iraq’s most powerful political party has called on the United States to let Iraqi fighters take a more aggressive role against insurgents, saying his country will only be able to defeat the insurgency when the United States lets Iraqis get tough.

    “The more freedom given to Iraqis, the more chance for further progress there would be, particularly in fighting terror,” said Abdul Aziz Hakim, head of the Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq, the Shiite Muslim religious party that leads the transitional government and whose armed wing is the most feared of Iraq’s many factional forces.

    Instead, Hakim asserted in a rare interview late last week, the United States is tying Iraq’s hands in the fight against insurgents. One of Iraq’s “biggest problems is the mistaken or wrong policies practiced by the Americans,” he said.

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/ wp-dyn/ content/ article/ 2005/ 11/ 26/ AR2005112601211.html

    Now, let’s be clear. This is one of the real leaders of Iraq and he’s telling us to get out of the way and let them do what needs to be done to clean out the Sunni Triangle and the Sunni insurgents coming in from Syria and Iran. I think he’s tired of his mosques, grade schools and weddings being bombed and his people killed. The good thing is when he gets his chance (and he will) there won’t be any peace/love/dove Leftwing Loser Democrats around crying about abuse and atrocities committed against the terrorists and tying the hands of the military. Why? Because he’ll kill all the whiners he can and deport the rest. There will be no more Democrats visiting Iraq. So who do you think really wants to cut troops and hand over more responsibility to the Iraqis? Bush or the Donks?

  68. 下载 Says:

    This is good news and reflective of all the good work that so many groups are doing including the AFL-CIO, Jobs with Justice, Wake Up Wal-Mart and Wal-Mart Watch. It’s no doubt this is why Wal-Mart is advertising about how their employees (ooops, associates) love their jobs and benefits.

  69. qq Says:

    The more freedom given to Iraqis, the more chance for further progress there would be, particularly in fighting terror,” said Abdul Aziz Hakim, head of the Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq, the Shiite Muslim religious party that leads the transitional government and whose armed wing is the most feared of Iraq’s many factional forces.
