Jonah Goldberg has a website he’d like you to know about:
The “database” offers a wealth of new racial epithets. Among them, a term to mock African Americans “due to their poor swimming abilities,” and a slur against Indians, a.k.a. “all the 7-11 workers of the world.”
Just the latest gem from the Los Angeles Times’ newest op-ed columnist.

This one, the racial slur database, is just a link. They’ll call you moonbats over this, and for once you’ll deserve it.

I don’t think there’s any promotion. Besides, there’s nothing inherently bad about a databse of racial slurs (knowledge is power and all of that). Jonah says a dozen or more things a week that deserve to be rebutted and exposed as stupid. Aim a little higher, is all.

November 22nd, 2005 at 8:38 pmI would suggest that this posting adds a great deal to the integrity and credibility of this site not for the intrinsic value of the words or slang but for the educational value of the content and context. I am a firm believer that one stops his or her education when one stops reading. I am in my eighth decade and I read primarily for the sake of reading at least three to four hours a day. I read at every opportunity instead of the boob tube. I draw the line, however, on football. I will watch the game and fore-go the sports page the next day. The point I am trying to make is that we can never truly understand anyone or any group of people until we can speak their, not our language, to do so we must understand their personal language which includes their jargon, their slang, their idioms, and their dialects. There is absolutely no harm in the collection presented on the web site. It can be educational, enlightening, comical, entertaining, and deadly serious as the individual reader chooses. A scenario that is also true of any written missive, including the Bible. To find fault with the presentation is tantamount to agreeing with Bush and his inability to accept any view other than his own. To agree with the individual terms is tantamount to holding the same bigoted views as Bush. Read, Learn, Enjoy, and eliminate those terms from your own vocabulary. Sponge-Boy, I ear-marked the page and I challenge you to do so as well to recognize your own biases, if any.

Well, duh, how else would software flag a message as “offensive” or “potentially offensive” in mail programs’ spell checkers/text checkers, blog software, editorial software, etc.?
Sure, it has the potential to be misused by bad editors, but I doubt if many of us have made a study of what pisses other people off, and it’s databases like these that can help prevent inadvertent giving of offense.
(When I give offense, I want it to be intentional!)

November 23rd, 2005 at 10:36 amI’m a fan of thinkprogress.org, it’s become a necessary part of my news gathering. But I’m very turned off by this particular post – maybe it’s because I’m a future librarian. A catalog of racial slurs is useful and in no way promotes racism. Personally, I would think that such a collection holds racism up in a very ugly light and makes it look ridiculous rather than seductive to those who have racist tendencies. Or at least that’s what I hope. The site as it stands though is the ultimate rorshach test, it says so little about itself. I’d be more comfortable with it if it were on an academic server hosted by the linguistics department of a research university or something. I think that this post says more about us than it does about Jonah-who’s clearly an ass but not because of the link.

Patrons routinely ask me to help locate information that I might find distasteful, but my professional obligation–which I take very seriously–prevents me from denying someone access to something I don’t like. I never know how someone will use the information I supply, and, frankly, it’s really none of my business.
We’ve already seen what happens when pharmacists refuse to fill prescriptions for moral reasons. I’m not about to join that camp.

He may exhibit shocked indignation about the site for public consumption, but we all know there’s a wink-wink-nudge-nudge to his conservative readers.
