Cunningham and MZM: The White House Connection

Today, Duke Cunningham pled guilty to receiving over $2 million in bribes from Mitchell Wade and his company, MZM Inc., in exchange for legislative favors. It’s worth noting that MZM also did some unusual business with the White House:

[O]ver the past three years it [MZM Inc.] was also awarded several contracts, worth more than $600,000, by the Executive Office of the President. They include a $140,000 deal for office furniture in 2002 and several for unspecified “intelligence services.”

Why did the White House hire MZM, a “defense and intelligence firm,” to buy office furniture for the White House?

I guess that would be the $60,00 question. Make that $140,000.

  2. Flamethrower Says:

That $140K was just for the 'W' keys.

Maybe dumbya bought "intellagence" from them. God knows, he has none and his administration has about the same.

  7. Susan Says:

Of course there's a link to the White House. Republicans are partners in crime.

  8. windspike Says:

The Whitehouse likes to place money with their friends. Particularly if it's hard earned taxpayer dollars.

  9. Innocent Bystander Says:

I'll bet it was $40,000 in furniture and $100K for the RNC coffee fund.

How come the Republican's aren't calling for an investigation? 5 years ago, they spent $120 Large to investigate 8 years of WH damage under Clinton (about $9K worth of wear and tear).

Office furniture for only $140K? Purchased from a republican crony? Couldn't be much, probably a paper clip dispenser.

Furniture from a defense and intelligence firm? If I were a Democratic Senator or Representative that just got new furniture through Duke's department, I would seriously consider checking for bugs...I would also watch what I say whenever visiting the west wing.

  19. Gary Says:

    Most people agree Bush is an asshole, I'd kick him up the backside but I'd probably lose my foot. Can you imagine the furniture spec to cope with this problem? I bet the inventory read;

233,000 car batteries with croc clips

  23. MrTimPA Says:

19: I hate to judge people, I really do - but - you have a point. Of course, to be fair - I'd like to see the inventory list for that 140K of "office furniture" and why a "defense firm" was chosen to provide it. Doesn't the FOIA allow one to obtain such, I'd assume non-classified, documents? Of course, given the cost of medical things these days, perhaps it was an extra crash-cart or two, just in case... heh heh

  24. MrTimPA Says:

22: Ok, you owe me a new keyboard! Too funny! :)

  25. MrTimPA Says:

Oh, and a final note - I note that in threads where some (R) putz got caught with his hand in the cookie jar (such as this one), the usual trolls are hiding under the bridge? I was fully expecting to see one of them crawl out to scribble something, but not a peep. It's interesting that when their "talking points" won't fit into a topic, they huddle there, waiting for one which will... go figure.

  26. blogenfreude Says:

Why did the White House hire MZM, a “defense and intelligence firm,” to buy office furniture for the White House?
Because next time, if a al-Qaeda plans to fly a plane into the White House, the Dear Leader plans to run like a stuck pig with an AUTOGRAPHED copy of "My Pet Goat."

  27. theo Says:

Because when you hire a full-service "defense and intelligence" firm to outfit your office, they actually FIND THE WMDs for you...

and PLACE THEM UNDER YOUR NEW COUCH!

  28. dan Says:

Just another corrupt Republican going to the joint. Stick him in Pelican Bay, I hear they have a great exercise yard...

2.5 million $$$ in bribes? I wonder how much money MZM scammed from the taxpayers.... Remember the owner of MZM forced his employees to donate to Republican candidates too!

I also want to see the list of furniture the White House bought. It would probably resemble some of the stuff bought with the Oil For Food Program funds....

  29. Clyde the Ripper Says:

It is time for Think Progress to start a score card of all the Repugs and ass-ociates that are going down. It should be just a two-column list with indicted in one column and convicted (Plead out) in the other. We already have a good start. We could also have a pool for the date and time new candidates like Turd-blossom and DUHbya are added to the first column and how much time the ones in column two get when convicted. The prize would be a chinese dinner for 6 with 4 from column one and 5 from column two. The fortune cookies for the winners would consist of a fully paid trip to Leavenworth Kansas with two visitor's passes for the NEWCON of your choice.

  30. Tom T Says:

Hey, did Safavian sign off on that? Wasn't he the official in charge of procurement? If so, maybe this ties in with the Abramoff scandal.

  31. Paul Taylor Says:

Oh, that's easy. This is a corrupt GOP administration, so you know the cash went towards furniture designed to secret away recording devices and cameras, etc.

W is just begging for his eighteen minutes of fame...

  32. puhleeze Says:

I read somewhere that MZM either sub-contracted TO or subcontracted FROM a company with the deliciously orwellian name... "Information Manufacturing Corporation"

  33. MrTimPA Says:

Still, I'd love to see the "sales agreement" - I don't want to pass judgement on these public officials (read: pricks) - show me what ya spent the money on and explain why a "defense contractor" was providing office stuff...:) This isn't rocket science (or, depending on the furniture, it might be)... :)

Of course, the very same government (IRS) goes after Aunt Betty because she deducted cat litter expenses on her tax form. :) (2.4Mil is a lot of kitty litter - unless you have a very big kitty!)

My gut feeling is that all these folks have to be taken down - enough is enough. I didn't shed one tear for Mr. Cunningham - and I think his "tearful" news conference was a joke.

  34. watou Says:

I second the suggestion above of a _SCORE CARD_ issued to keep track of all the scandals and indictments!

What a great PDF to print out and post around town: the concise state of all scandals, investigations, indictments, plea agreements, all arranged in something like org chart format. This would give us all a clear, visual way of tracking the decline and fall of the Republic of Rove-Cheney Dystopian Kleptocracy.

  35. bnye Says:

As a San Diego resident, all I can say is thank god. Thank god someone at our right wing rag, the UT, had the guts to investigate this scandal. It frightens me to think of the scope of the corruption in D.C. that goes unreported.

  38. jawbone Says:

Furniture is strange enough, but the "intelligence services"?

WTF? What would any WH be doing with an outside agency providing "intelligence services"?

    Freekin' weird.

  39. Tippersnore Says:

Yep, we all know Duke`s the kind of hero Tommy De-Lay worships. Makes me proud to be a part of the whole thing called freedom.

  40. revolutionary Says:

Sounds strangely familiar to the installation of the taping system in the WH by Nixon. These folks could have installed a surveillance network inside the WH either to collect information on their people and guests OR to be found later and pretend that Dems or others have bugged the WH as a false flag operation to gain public sympathy.

  41. phil Says:

Let's not forget how "manditory minimum sentences were
forgotten by the Republican judge when it came to DUKE"S
son a few years ago. I suspect that a Republican judge will
go old Duke a slap on his conservative hands and sentence him
to a year's probation. Let's watch and see. Here is the story:

    _______________________________________________________
In Boston,Todd Cunningham, 29, the son of U.S. Rep. Randy "Duke" Cunningham (R-CA),
was sentenced on November 17 to 2-1/2 years in federal prison for marijuana smuggling. Rep.
Cunningham, who has supported the death penalty for drug traffickers, made a tearful plea to
U.S.Judge Reginald C. Lindsay for leniency for his son. Prosecutors supported the sentence, which is
half the mandatory five year term for such an offense, because Cunningham provided information about
other offenders involved in the smuggling operation. It was Cunningham's first conviction. (Bill Murphy,
"Son of lawmaker sentenced to prison," San Diego Union Tribune, November 18, 1998.)

  42. Wayne in Maine Says:

I would guess that MZM provided the WH with the much needed "Cone of Silence" from the old ,Get Smart tv program. Bush needed it to shut out critics , while he believes he is fighting , Kaos.

  43. jurassicpork Says:

I guess they specialize in making office chairs with ejectors seats. With the direction this administration is headed, looks as if Dubya, Leaky Dick and Karl may all need one to make good their getaway.

  44. Mr. Evil Says:

Where are all the right whackers defending Duke Cunningham and MZM on this thread? Not a single one yet. The Duke has fallen (and can't get up) and I'm sure there more to come very soon. The corruption within this administration and republican controlled congress probably runs much deeper than we can even fathom at this time. Anyone notice you haven't heard any screaming from corrupt DeLay lately? What about corrupt Rove? He's sinking deeper and deeper as I type. What about corrupt Abramoff? Can't wait to here what stories he has to tell when he starts begging for a plea deal!

  45. brainwreck Says:

So what furniture did the $140,000 office furniture purchase replace, and what became of that "old" furniture?? Government property books would reflect this (if done legitimately). I wish I had the coin to do a FOIA request. That might reveal some interesting info.

  46. MoreGooder Says:

Hummmm... No BlueStateRed or wwallace crap-fest happeneng? This must have them stumped.

  47. Gen. JC Christian, patriot Says:

I guess that would be the $60,00 question. Make that $140,000.

It was $60,000, but MZM followed the standard Dept. of Defense procedures and added $80,000 for shipping, handling, and greasing.

  48. Ken Says:

$140K WH 'furniture' contract for a bit playing, startup defense firm...? What's the mystery? Thinking caps people, thinking (and remembering) caps. You know it's NOT for furniture and it WAS 2002 so, what do you 'think' ? How about a RePug campaign slush fund (remember the machinations of CREEP in the '72 elections:

Reelection: The full story behind Nixon's victory in 1972 may never be known. The former leaders of the Committee to Reelect the President (CREEP) have proved somewhat reluctant to reveal the full extent of their criminal activities. This much is already clear: Nixon raised and spent more money than any candidate in history--including millions of dollars of illegal corporate contributions; every arm of Government was politicized to an unprecedented degree in order to insure his reelection; a massive campaign of sabotage and espionage helped to divide and discredit the President's opponents. (http://www.trivia-library.com/a/president-richard-m-nixon-reelection-and-creep.htm)

And, do the 'math': $140K + many other as yet (if ever to be) discovered/disclosed $149K's = +5 Senate seats and control of all three branches of government and cart blanche for a pre-ordained invasion of Iraq.

Yes, a FOIA 'peek' for actual 'butt holders' (furniture) would indeed be in order, don't you think?

    Let the ass covering begin!

  49. BlueGirlRedState Says:

Be patient. Scott McClellan will answer all your questions at tomorrow's press briefing.
SCOTT: I'm not going to comment on an ongoing investigation. The president continues to have faith in Mr. Cunningham and appreciates his distinguished service to our country. Next? Shut up, Helen. I've answered your question. Next? Helen, I'm warning you. Next? Jeff Gannon. What? Oh, sorry, I was hoping he'd be here today. Next? Helen... Okay, That's All Folks!

#30 I, too, am curious to know if Safavian signed off on this deal and, if so, why? I hope whatever plea deal he may have agreed to doesn't stop the prosecutor from learning more.

#42 LOL. And the "Cone of Silence" they bought probably works as well as CONTROL's did. Little does President Bush realize that Vice President Cheney is really Siegfried and Karl Rove is Steiger. (P.S. I almost stopped that last sentence at "Little does President Bush realize.")

  53. Navy Vet Says:

How about a deck of card like they had for Iraq. I am sure there is enough to fill a deck.

  54. WD Says:

Judd - an important point that you missed was that MZM's FIRST federal contract (after having opening its doors in 1993) was with the White House for the $140k in furniture.

I think this is an important distinction, particularly since MZM was operating as a defense firm, but "broke into the biz" through a furniture contract...

  57. ThomNYC Says:

Now, this is interesting. Can we substantiate the claims posted here? If so, it's very significant.

Harris, (we all remember the lovely Floridian, right?) has dealings with this same company which might not be above board???

The WH has purchased things from this company which the company doesn't distribute???

Let's see some hard evidence of this right away!

If there is truth in it, it exposes the whole back room deal mentality this corrupt group has successfully masked for so long.

*****You won't find conservatives, or as you so ignorantly refer to us, "right whackers", defending the corrupt and dishonest dealings of Duke Cunningham. There is no defense for his abhorrent behaviour. That's the difference between conservatives and progs - many of you moral relativists cite "the liberal voting record", "the rotten childhood experience", "fetal-alchohol syndrome" or "mom loved him/her more" excuse and other "mitigating" circumstances when you defend dishonest, immoral behaviours. (The fact that Todd, the son, was busted THREE TIMES testing positive for cocaine while out on bail...and jumped out of a second story window breaking his leg to escape the officers who were coming to re-arrest him on those charges....made him available for HALF the the mandatory sentence anyone else would have received . . ."on demand crying" is the Cunningham voodoo - let's hope it doesn't work at his own sentencing hearing!)

Prosecutors supported the sentence, which is half the mandatory five year term for such an offense.

It's not just this Republican administration that is corrupt. All of government is corrupt, by it's very nature. They take what they haven't earned from you and me and give it to people who don't deserve it.

Party affiliation does not figure in to it at all. For that matter, there is virtually no difference between the Republicans and the Democrats. They're both controlled by the same monied interestes (corporations) and look upon the citizenry of the United States with disdain. We the People have become the great unwashed in our own country.

This 'scandal' is nothing more than a side show. A diversion. A distraction from the bigger picture. By all means, keep arguing party lines; that's exactly what the guys pulling the strings want.

An appropriate label since the biggest hi-jacking in American history took place in dark dank basements and it didn't involve one Arab or Muslim.
