O’Reilly Teaches Viewers the True Meaning of Christmas

According to Bill O’Reilly, Christmas is under siege from the “secular progressive agenda…to get Christianity and spirituality and Judaism out of the public square.” The self-described “leading general of the anti-secular forces in this country” often devotes radio and television segments to the issue around this time of year.

Thankfully, the man defending Christmas understands its true meaning. Here’s what he said on last night’s Factor:

Every company in America should be on its knees thanking Jesus for being born. Without Christmas, most American businesses would be far less profitable. More than enough reason for business to be screaming “Merry Christmas.”

O’Reilly speaks from experience. Featured prominently on his website is “The O’Reilly Christmas Store,” where loyal Factor viewers can buy books, jackets, and coffee mugs featuring the right-wing commentator’s favorite slogans.

  1. SpudgeBoy says:

So, the true meaning of Christmas is selling goods to consumers?

Wasn’t it Jesus that ran the shops and sellers out of the temple?

    What Would Jesus Do?

  2. Gary Kleppe says:

Doesn’t Billy-boy know that Xmas used to be a pagan holiday before the Christians co-opted it?

  3. afterthought says:

Does anybody still listen to O’lielly?
    Even by right-wing whack-job standards
    he seems like a zero.
    Falafel indeed. Hee.

  4. yankeluh says:

  5. Suzanne says:

    “I’m wishing for a patriotic Christmas….”
O’Reilly and Falwell need to hold a fund raiser to raise the cash to hire some mercenary soldiers to go into stores and beat up anyone not buying enough. Not buying, even if one goes into debt, is unpatriotic.

  6. kindness says:

Now if only the Phaux News store would stock targets with O’Liely’s picture on them, then they might have a run on something really good that we could all use…..

No, I am not suggesting we kill the evil bastard, but go ahead and shoot rubber bands at the fool, or maybe that piece of pie you don’t like, fruitcake, definitely falafells.

  7. Balloon Juice says:

[...] I agree completely with Think Progress. Bill O’Reilly is a fricking idiot: [...]

  8. Gregor Samsa says:

“(…)to get Christianity and spirituality and Judaism out of the public square(…)”

Listing Judaism in this context makes no sense as the Jewish tradition does not include Christmas.

Also, if he wants Abrahamic religions in the public square, why did he leave out Islam?

Yet another nonsensical rant by O’Reilly.

  9. Sharon Cox says:

How many thread’s have we had here on this fool.? He is part of the american problem, but why give him the time and space…Blessings

Just as the crucifixion of Jesus meant profit for the cross-builders, let us pause on behalf of the arms industry and the military subcontracting industries – in other words, the President (Carlysle Group), Dick Cheney (Haliburton) and their businessman’s death cabal, and give loving thanks to the new supply-side Jesus, that anti-Darwin Social Darwinist up in Heaven who reminds us that vast stores of Earthly wealth are in fact Godly after all, and that greed is the real word become flesh.

Why do websites continue to give this clown any coverage at all? It seems like the more that’s exposed about O’Lielly, the more the moron spews. Maybe if he got no attention at all he’d dry up and blow away.

  15. Glenn Navia says:

Now, Mr. O’Reily, doesn’t the term “holidays” derive from the concept of “Holy Days”? Hmmmmmm….what’s so unchristian about wishing someone a happy Holy Day?

  16. Lyle says:

So what’s wrong with this? He is just stating the obvious. Christmas is about presents. Oh my God, the Horror!!!

It is not like the non-Christian Romans and Germanics of Europe liked to celebrate life by having a good time around December 25 every year. Shame on them and shame on modernity.

    Boohoooo….

  17. MagnumDB says:

Did anyone see his interview with Dan Rather? I missed it, but I remember the commercial for it making the interview look like a boxing match, and apparently saying that Bill puts Dan in his place or something.

I never watch Bill because I don’t want to give him the rating. I’ll be happy to sit through a recorded version online however.

Oh yeh… and Christmas. Is there any religion in it anymore? I’ll see the occasional birth of Jesus on a lawn, but that’s fading.

Shouldn’t Bill be angry at his fellow Christians for making it such a non-Religious day?

You can disagree with his “war on Christmas” theory, but he actually puts his money where his mouth is with the O’Reilly store …

  21. thorny1 says:

This is just hilarious. O’Reilly’s version of Christmas is about as secular as it gets. What a complete idiot. Thanks for posting this.

  22. Zippy the Other Pinhead says:

I’m hoping to find something for me on the Faux news site for Christmas: a falafel-scented loofa with O’Liely’s picture on it, so I have something to wash my butt with…

Quite the AMEN! chorus going on here…You all agree that BOR is greedy and a loser and a fool and an evil bastard.

But nobody questions this out-of-context quotation as being what Payton asserts it is – O’Reilly’s views on “…the True Meaning of Christmas.”?

Nobody wonders, “Did BOR REALLY characterize these three sentences as being his views on the true meaning of Christmas? Or is Payton being a little loose with the truth here when he? she? states that this is what BOR really believes is the “true meaning”?”

Or is it that you just don’t care?

  25. Bob Davis says:

  28. Ryan Neat says:

    GeoMetro,

Which ‘charities’? Many organizations that claim to be charities are in fact reichwing propaganda and lobbying groups. Just because OLeilly says proceeds go to ‘charities’, no more makes it true than any other well of lies he spews his venom from.

    Replying to #20

I just made a quick trip to the online store at billoreilly.com, and while I didn’t see the note that you quoted about him donating proceeds, I’ll take your word for it. That said, I’m not sure such a statement means what you suggest it does. If he’s donating “proceeds from the website, including premium membership fees,” that doesn’t necessarily mean that he’s donating profits from the online store. My suspicion is that he does not.

If you can link to evidence proving that he does, in fact, donate proceeds from the store to charity, I’ll think more highly of him, but until then, I suspect he’s not quite putting his money where you think he is. And heaven help us where that man puts his mouth.

  32. Andrew G. says:

  33. Lyle says:

    Ryan Neat,

Ryan, Ryan, Ryan….You just can’t seem to get yourself out of that junior-high gutter, can you?

Your knee-jerk insults really show a lack of any sort of intellectual rigor on your part.
Instead of actually being able to come up with any sort of cogent reply to my questions – you dismiss them as “republican talking points” even though that is just flat-out absurd.

Does your feeble mind believe there’s some sort of clearinghouse for these “talking points” that is manned 24/7? You must if you imagine my query – posted 46 minutes after Payton’s initial post- was any kind of “talking point”. Do you imagine there are – somewhere in Karl Rove’s garage, perhaps? -groups of pasty-white tie-wearing Republicans that constantly monitor TP and other lefty sites and are prepared to immediately respond to any post, no matter how inane and nonsensical?
And that I must have gotten an e-mail alert from Rovian MindMeld Industries, Inc. instructing me as to the “talking point” the Republicans want to get out ASAP to respond to a “We LOATHE BOR!” post on TP?

Wow…That paranoia is really advanced, huh?

  38. Joe Sixpack says:

Hey, #20 guayakamoto or Guyhomo or whatever. I like that small take about O’Righty “putting his money were his mouth is.” Yeah, right. I mean, I’m with you here, but others might wonder if just maybe the sales on Billy’s crummy hats and cheap ceramic cups are off so now he is going for a tax writeoff.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but Bill must have recouped the millions he lost in payoffs to Andrea Mackris for the sexual harrassement suit last year. Ya think?

    MightyHermaphrodite,

I thought you were ‘bored’ by me? You claim to not post against things that bore you, yet you only seem to post in liberal sites. Does that mean your husband and other retarded republicans bore you, since you only post here?

Sure it does. Your pathology is so transparent, and so are your fears and weaknesses.

And speaking of charities, how much did you donate to AIPAC this year so they israel spy on american military interests? That’s a great example of a ‘charity’ that has international spy and treason traits – and just imagine, they’re part of your friends…

  44. Ryan Neat says:

“Ryan, Ryan, Ryan….You just can’t seem to get yourself out of that junior-high gutter, can you?” tomaig

I just respond to my audience. When you act mature, I respond accordingly. When you act like a teenage retarded hack, I treat you as you behave. Behaving ‘in context’ is something republicans never seem to have the maturity or intelligence to understand – clearly that’s why you destroy everything you touch.

  45. Ryan Neat says:

“I guess you would know since some many “charities” that liberals hold up are really fronts for leftist political causes.
If it is good for one side, why isn’t good for the other?
    Comment by Lyle ”

Liberal causes? You mean like dealing with civil rights, poverty and oppression from religious fanatics. Yeah, those sound really dangerous…

Because the republican side is the one that focuses on oppression, bigotry and hate crimes. And the point is that calling ‘lobbying’ organizations ‘charities’ is what republicans do, democrats tend to call them lobbying organizations or PACs.

Now once again, what misrepresentation of facts were you presenting again? Oh wait, everything you do qualifies for that…

    Partisan hacks!

  46. tomaig says:

“I just respond to my audience”

Is that how you ended up being a Hindu pacifist?

  47. Lyle says:

    Ryan,

Partisan hacks? What is Think Progress if not a cheap, anti-intellectual site for Left-wing partisan hacks?

Just labeling Republican as hateful and bigotted is ignorant and metaphor for someone who does not think for himself.

It is noteworthy, too, that the Most High womynizer, “Reverend” Jesse Jackson never lost his standing in the prog community. My other favourite moral poster boy is Queasy Mfume. There aren’t too many highly regarded “leaders” with more illegitimate children (by more mothers) than Queasy.

Go to his website … he lists the charities there.

    Joe Sixpack

The fact that he was accused of sexual harassment (and paid the woman to go away) is irrelevant to his donating all proceeds from his website to charity. Some were making the point that he was hypocritical for having a Christmas store … I was setting that record straight.

  51. Suzanne says:

It’s really funny. The right wingy bashers here think they are so witty. Good thing the reality of their petty world view is caving in……everywhere. Just look at what the majority of reasonable people think of Ann Coulter and her “followers” :) When people, whatever party, are ready show some class, they will be ready for some real communication. Until then, all the drivel in the last few posts above, is simply ……….laughable.

  52. Ryan Neat says:

    MightyHermaphrodite,

I saw your ‘faithful 400′ free republic march earlier this year, no amount of soap would protect those fat, ugly and stupid republican men and women who showed up. Clearly you’re projecting your own physical inadequacies and hygenic deficiencies again. It must be hard to stay clean when you’re as obese as yourself…

  53. Ryan Neat says:

    Giacomo,

Really, why can’t you post the list here if it’s so easy to find?

  54. mighty aphrodite says:

Ryan, Can’t you take a compliment?? On the flip side – The boring portion of your arguments:
    “THE …SAME…OLD… THING”.

You wrap yourself up in the Mantra “Civil Rights” – and expect full insulation. Of course, progs regularly defend radical Islamofascists, child molesters – “what’s another child molester in YOUR neighbourhood?” and the latest prog poster boy, Tookie Williams. All this, under the umbrella of “Civil Rights”.

When I think of the history of Civil Rights, I like to remmeber Presidents Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, standing up to the racists of the KKK.

  55. Ryan Neat says:

MightyHermaphrodite criticizes others for not having manners, anyone else surprised she’s such a retarded hypocrite? I know I’m not.

Which catholic school did you go to? They’re supposed to teach young girls (boys?) manners there, obviously you were asleep when those lessons were given.

  56. Joe Sixpack says:

Hey, aphrodite, hi. Is me, Joe, doing my best to help our side of the arguement against these leftwing commie types. Believe me, nazi-facist views get trashed here so watch out—-just ask our pal, I-RIGHT-I. He gets the stuffing knocked out himself with his far right crap, doesn’t he?

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I donate to charities. I have a steady deduction to the Salvation Army and a nice check now and then to Planned Parenthood. I would send some to the NOW, if they asked, but I need to keep some dough in my pocket for drinking, you know? And to buy a package of rubbers now and then.

Say, I bet O’Rielly gives at least a 10% tithing to his church, so how much do you think he donates to charity?

Say, aphrodite, do you suppose O’Rielly still makes obscene phone calls behind his wife’s back to his co-workers or has he put that seedy part of his life behind himself? I mean, he’s the first to admit that sex offenders usually reoffend.

And calling this site anti- intellectual is an example of the many stupid comments here. You cannot lump all that goes on in this site as anti -intellectual anymore than you can say it is all intellectual. But that’s what many do….they make unintelligent, incomplete, blanket statements like that. Where did these folks go to school? Or were they one of the one’s left behind? It’s all about who can shout down who in the most silly ways. Get a life and some manners while you’re at it. That is to the people that insist on name calling, insults, and juvenile responses because they are too lazy and too immature to write a polite and articulate response. It’s not cute…it’s not mojo …it doesn’t cut it. Crude is crude …..bottom line.

  60. Average TV Viewer says:

” progs regularly defend radical Islamofascists, child molesters”

What kind of F*CKED up remark is that?

  61. Ryan Neat says:

    MightyHermaphrodite,

Same old tripe. Republicans created and defended AlQaeda for years when they were fighting the soviets. I’ve personally and continue to criticize the tactics of them, just as I did under reagan and bush. So who’s the lying hypocrite? Oh, wait, it’s YOU again.

As for ‘child molestors’, well considering that MizzWrong clearly qualifies as a likely one, it’s funny how you’re so chummy with him. Single man, 25, hates women (often calls them sluts, whores, etc.), hates gay people, that’s pretty much a classic profile of a pedophile.

And did you notice that 2 out of the 3 presidents you listed who stood up for civil rights were liberals. How ironic huh?

And we’re still fighting them. When you and your anti-semitic buddy MizzWrong talk about killing ALL of the palestinians, etc., clearly you’re just another version of the KKK in republican clothing, just like the 1960s versions.

First it’s Fallwell and his Christmas fanaticism of “you’re either with us or against us” approach to X-mas. Now we’ve got O’Reilly adding his disinformation. Do you suppose any of these self-proclaimed ‘Christians’ have ever opened a Bible let alone read it. If they did they would find that you can search from Genesis to Revelatin and find NO MENTION of Christmas, Jesus’ birthdate or ANY instruction to celebrate it. The whole idea of X-mas was adopted by the early Roman church to add so-called pagans to their membership rolls. why doesn’t anyone ever question this whole “Put Christ back in X-mas” thing? You can’t put him back in because he wasn’t there to begin with. Qite the coincidence that this ‘holy’day is celebrated on the winter solstice. Give me a freakin’ break!

The bad thing: I have a terrible premonition that it’s going to work. Right now, it’s embedding itself in that little brainstem lesion which those susceptible to Republicanism possess and the rest of us don’t, and it’s going to incubate and transmogrify… Just you wait until 2006 and 2008.

  85. WORFEUS says:

    Actually Vesparia is exactly right.

Most scholars believe, based on astronomical datam it was sometime in April, between the 3rd and 10th of April, 5 BC.

But it is also interesting to note, that early biblical scholars believed that celebrating his birth was akin to paganism and condemed the practice. In fact, the biblical historian, Origen, who lived in Alexandria between 185 and 254 AD, likened the practice to the pagan rituals of the Pharoahs.

The early Catholic church, dated the 25th as the day of celebration in 366 AD, and it is commonly believed that this day was chosen as it conincided with the gentile celebrations that worshipped the “Sun God”, or “dies natalis solis invicti” as it is was known.

    Just some interesting facts.

Personally, I like watching “It’s a wonderful life” the early versions of a “Christmas Carol” and most recently, Will Farrells’ “Elf”, which is quickly becoming our favorite family Christmas story, so Christmas is ok with me, as long as I don’t have to buy anyone anything.

  86. WORFEUS says:

    Merry Christmas everyone!

    Joe Joe Joe

There you go confusing things with all of your fancy facts. That’s not the way it goes around here anymore. Facts don’t matter. “Winning” the argument against the other side is all that matters.

You can’t expect people to have room in their brains to remember actual facts. Sound bites are much more convenient. Neocons have labeled the ACLU a liberal leftist organization hell bent on destroying our way of life, so it must be so. I won’t take the time to research any cases or read up on the organization, I’ll simply let O’l Dumbya and company think for me. It’s much easier and leaves me with free time to watch Bill O’Reilly, The 700 Club and listen to Rush “I love illegals cause they buy my Oxycontin for me” Limbaugh.

  88. WORFEUS says:

Here I made up a new Christmas Carol for everyone.

    It goes like this….

‘Bill O’Reilly is an asshole, Bill O’Reilly is an asshole, Bill O’Reilly is an asshole,…..and a happy new year!’

  90. Joe Sixpack says:

Hey Str8Up, I must agree with you. I was so surprised to find all the causes that the ACLU has stood up for over the years. It was an eye opener, even for a dumbassed rightwinger like me to see.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but one that really got me was when they helped Jerry Falwell get part of the Virginia Constitution overturned that was stopping his organization from incorporating (Apr 2002). OR the April 2002 case where the ACLU supported the right of Iowa students to distribute religious literature at school.

I mean, talk about a rightwing organization that needs to be outlawed!!!!!

  91. im4mary says:

Who are his advertisers, on the radio and cable TV?

    Comment by Andrew G

Good question, Andrew. Then we could start a letter campaign to these advertisers with a corresponding boycott untill Bill is off the air. Wouldn’t be a bad idea to do a similar campaign with Ann Coulter. The only way we’re going to effectively counteract these individuals who twist and deny the truth, or make up their own is by targeting those who pay to advertise while they’re doing their business.

Organized opposition that affects those who are paying the cash will be more effective than merely talking to each other about it, don’t you think? Not only is conversing with one another and sharing information as this (and other) blogs valuable, but also directing our energies to making useful changes would help too.

  92. WORFEUS says:

    im4mary ;

While I appreciate your zeal, and what you speak of is certainly legal, it just smacks too close to censorship for my liking.

As much as I loathe O’reilly, I believe he has a right to say what he wants. And the lobotomized fan base who watches him, has every right to hear what he has to say.

Hell I even watch his show once in a while. And sometimes I even find myself agreeing with him on some things! (I know I know, I could get crucified in here for saying that).

When we start seeking to stifle the free speech of others, we lay the groundwork to silence our own free speech, and thats not something I am ready to do.

Everyone gets their say, saint’s and sinners, the articulate, and the asshole, and even the articulate assholes. I may not like what they have to say, but I would fight side by side with them defending their right to say it.

    God Bless America!!!

  94. SpudgeBoy says:

    WORFEUS,

I agree. We shouldn’t censor Bill or Anne.

Besides, if we did, who would we laugh at.

  95. greg wirth says:

    WORFEUS,

problem is, 51% of American apparently thinks like O’Reilly meaning we get more George Bushs and Dick Cheneys who think experimental premptive war is a good idea coupled with theocratic like rule at home.

  96. SpudgeBoy says:

    gerg wirth,

51% is a number based on moderates voting with conservatives. The conservatives have lost the moderates. The number is now 34%. Those are the die hard conservatives. That is all they have.

Fox News only has 1.4 million viewers. To put that in perspective, 2.5 million people play World of Warcraft. So, more people would rather play a video game than watch Fox News.

  97. WORFEUS says:

I agree with you that the ideas are wrong. Pre-emptive war in and of itself is wrong.

US law in EVERY State prohibits someone striking someone because they “think” someday down the road they may be hit by them. I can’t walk down the street, see you, decide you are dressed like someone, or acting like someone who may want to hurt me, and walk up to you and hit you.

When the police arrive, and I tell them I just launched a “pre-emptive” strike, guess what they are gonna do?

And anyone examining the early stirs of Nazi Germany, they will find that Hitler introduced the concept of “pre-emptive” war to the modern industrialized community, to launch his holocaust on the planet.

I agree with you pre-emptive war is wrong.

I just disagree with the concept of trying to stifle their speech. Free speech does not just mean the speech you are comfortable hearing. It means free speech for all.

Besides, like SpudgeBoy said, if we did stifle windbags like O’reilly, who would we laugh at?

  98. SpudgeBoy says:

“When the police arrive, and I tell them I just launched a “pre-emptive” strike, guess what they are gonna do?”

Now that is funny shit! I can picture that in my head.

So by that premise, murder is just fine because someone else did it first. What happened to “do unto others” or is that Christian talk just wordplay for the sheeple?

  100. WORFEUS says:

Freepers, don’t you have anything better to do but attempt to drag down the enlightened into your nadir of despair?

You’ve been had, and you’ve been had bad, and you know it, and you know that we know it.

BOR is a joke who doesn’t know shit from shinola about history. The elimination of “Merry Christmas” from the public vernacular has been the norm for a long, long time.

Here’s another funny thought: if “a decade ago,” it was kosher to use “Merry Christmas,” why, that means it was kosher while Bill Clinton was president. Tell me, BOR and the BORing Freepers, why does your president hate Jesus? You know, seeing how your president refuses to “save Christmas.”

  102. Paul in LA says:

Jesus wasn’t born in December, that much is VERY CLEAR FROM THE RECORD.

The December holiday is entirely what O’Reilly inadvertently says: a Pagan holiday of gift-giving, in celebration of the Solstice.

And the same for Eos-tre, the holiday of Eos, Pagan goddess of the dawn.

No one who understands the historical record could argue otherwise.

Christianity has been “disfigured by the corruptions of schismatising followers, who have found an interest in sophisticating and perverting the simple doctrines he taught … caus(ing) good men to reject the whole in disgust and view Jesus himself as an imposter. Notwithstanding these disadvantages, a system of morals is presented to us, which, if filled up in the true style and spirit of the rich fragments he left us, would be the most perfect and subline that has ever been taught by man.” –Thomas Jefferson, 1800.

Which deftly explains how it is that bearing false witness, which is O’Reilly’s stock-in-trade, never seems to interfere with his posture of defending Santa Claus the Merchant, and calling that Christianity.

  103. Ryan Neat says:

Actually the Christmas celebration is the feast of Zeus, and it was banned in the early united states because it was seen as a pagan feast where people got drunk and did stupid immoral things.

  104. Paul in LA says:

And, btw, the dispute over Christmas was argued long and hard IN THE NEGATIVE by a great many DEVOUT christians throughtout US history.

Since the Thou Shalt Kill For Profit crowd doesn’t seem to be able to get its knuckles off the floor in order to type Christmas into Google,

    http://tinyurl.com/5llu9 , from whence:

“We have seen that Presbyterian opposition to Christmas is consistent, historical, and based upon solid scriptural considerations. Yet, Presbyterians were not the only persons who maintained a strong stand against Christmas and kindred corruptions of worship; there were other Christians who held a similar convictions. For example, the famous Baptist preacher Charles H. Spurgeon opened a sermon on 24 December 1871 with the following words:

“”We have no superstitious regard for times and seasons. Certainly we do not believe in the present ecclesiastical arrangement called Christmas: first, because we do not believe in the mass at all, but abhor it, whether it be said or sung in Latin or in English; and, secondly, because we find no scriptural warrant whatever for observing any day as the birthday of the Savior; and, consequently, its observance is a superstition, because not of divine authority.”"

Worfeus – I can understand your reservation in relation to censorship and I agree that it is prudent to exercise caution. Interestingly, I can’t watch BOR because I don’t subscribe to satellite or cable. When I looked up on the list of companies who advertise on FOX, I found that I rarely use those businesses anyway.

I guess my point is that we, collectively, have power to sustain change if we so choose. When the Bill’s and Ann’s are allowed to intentionally mislead and/or misrepresent information/facts without recourse, there will be some people who will believe them.

  109. WORFEUS says:

I agree that they mislead and lie, and people will believe them.

I just happen to think we do change things with words, and as we discuss ideas, opinions and facts in public meeting places like this, because that IS what this is after all, a public meeting place, and what we say in here, is read by thousands, and shared with tens of thousands.

The American people are really not so dumb, (well, some of em are) but most of them eventually will come to reason, as the arguments are made.

That is why it is soooo important that we make them. The right wants to silence us. Saying treasoness vile crap like, “dissent emboldens the enemy” and “were not supporting the troops”.

Were not just supporting the troops when we speak out, were supporting America.

That is why it is our right as Americans,

  110. WORFEUS says:

And I think your zeal is great, don’t ever loose it. Just remember that what we do to others, can be done unto us.

  111. WORFEUS says:

    Freedom and Democracy.

This is so late, but your post is absolutely correct. I was reading the posts and going to write something similar, when I see that you already have.

BTW, I enjoy the Christmas movies too, I would add “The Christmas Story” about little Ralphie and his Red Ryder rifle to your list of good ones.

  116. Ryan Neat says:

While we’re on pagan cristian holidays, my favorite is ‘easter’, which even has a pagan name!

“The ancient Saxons celebrated the return of spring with an uproarious festival commemorating their goddess of offspring and of springtime, Eastre. When the second-century Christian missionaries encountered the tribes of the north with their pagan celebrations, they attempted to convert them to Christianity. They did so, however, in a clandestine manner.”

That’s why everyone has ‘eggs’, because they are a symbol of the ‘offspring’ of the fertility goddess…

Christianity has similar roots, I’ll post some later, they’re really fun!

  117. Ryan Neat says:

This is pulled from various sources…

The current christianity has its origins in the ‘Yule’ winter solstice holiday. That’s where the term ‘yuletidings’ comes from, it’s a reference to the pagan celebration ;)

The solstice has long been celebrated as the birthday of the unconquerable SUN god. Various incarnations of this ‘god’ were know as Tammuz, Mithra, Saturn, Adonis or baal. This celebration is much older than either the jews or christians.

This festival in Roman times was called the feast of Saturn, and this is likely the origins of modern european christmas, as europe was a roman empire at the rise of christianity. The festival of Bacchus, was celebrated in Babylon… The Christmas dinner derives directly from those feasts and festivals.

The Christmas tree was equally common in pagan Rome and pagan Egypt. The ‘fir’ (a pine) was a symbol of religious worship among romans. Similarly peoples of the northern regions of europe worshiped the tree in winter because it was ‘ever green’ symbolizing the continuation of life, and the promise of the resurrection of spring.

I can go on, and on, but OLeilly and similar christian morons are completely ignorant of their religion, its origins and most definitely its beliefs! They are a disappointment and an embarrassment to the entire human race!

  120. freedom is not free says:

    LUKE CHAPTER 16
19 ¶ There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day:
20 And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores,
21 And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man’s table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores.
    22 And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham’s bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried;
23 And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.
24 And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.
25 But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented.
26 And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence.
27 Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father’s house:
28 For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment.
29 Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.
30 And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent.
31 And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.

Neo-Cons are so twisted, I wonder if MAnn Coulter realizes that if the Neo-Cons ever turh America into a Tyranny, the ones that Helped bring it into being, WILL be the VERY FIRST to go.

Wake UP MAnn. Naw on second thought, forget what I said. MAnn you deserve whatever you get.

  126. WORFEUS says:

You are right Acksyn Jacksyn, (I’m just a FIN packet, or maybe a RST) cool handle.

In fact, in light of the topic, and the preaching from the likes of Bill O’lielly, I will wax biblical for a moment. Muse on the O’lielly.

    That’ the problem, that most fundamental Christians like O’lielly seem to overlook, is that Jesus didn’t come to institute a religion; he came to free us from the bonds of false religious pragmatic rituals and practices. His words to them could easily be directed at the current Christian right movement;

“Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.
For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups and many other such like things ye do”

    – Matthew 15:9 – Mark 7:7

    He condemned ritualistic practices and prayers; in fact, he condemned pretty much every religious leader of his day. What makes O’lielly, Falwell, Robertson, any of them, think he would do any different today? Just because the so called right wing say they worship him, doesn’t mean they are doing what he said. Jesus encountered this type of beguiled worship;

“Ye hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy of you, saying, This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me.”

    – Matthew 15:7

It is interesting to note, that in the preceding verses which can be complicated to read, he gave an example of someone taking a scripture, and twisting it so badly as to promote the exact opposite of what it was intended to say.

So what did Jesus want of those who would claim to follow him? Simple actually.

In the Gospel of John, he said “if you love me, keep my commandments” and his commandments were simple, commandments that he recanted in the Sermon on the Mount. Among those were these classics:

Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.
Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.
Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.
Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.

Sounds like pacifist dogma does it not? At least if you’re a right wing republican you would not say such things in your local beer bar. No talk of “stay the course” here, no “acceptable collateral damage”. Just downright tree-hugging peacenik crap. Of course, the right winged Christian preachers seem to mysteriously overlook the teachings of Christ himself, and instead focus on his life, or scriptures from the Old Testament to support their warring philosophy. See they would have you believe that understanding Jesus, his life and teachings, are complicated, and not for the layperson. They are only to be understood by the learned scholars, and pious priests, who in turn teach the true meanings to the masses. But this is the great lie. The great whoredom of his gospel.

Jesus tailored his gospel so all can understand. He said it was the “good news” and he said from his well, all could drink. And so he taught simple, easy to understand but excruciatingly hard to do concepts, and he even used fun little stories, called parables, to deliver them to the general public. But today, just as in his day, the religious population has corrupted the message, the spirit and intent of the law, and turned to the easy, chest pounding, burn all who oppose at the stake philosophy, and they have spread their twisted gospel with blood and horror on the face of our little planet.

Perhaps Jesus had us in mind when he said,

“Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment. But I say unto you, that whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment”

Hmmm, angry with our brothers without cause you say? So if being angry with our brothers without cause gets us the “judgment” I wonder what going to war with our brothers in Iraq without cause will buy us?

Guess we’ll just have to wait and see on that one, won’t we?

  127. WORFEUS says:

Here, since the right wingers are so alergic to the Sermon on the Mount, here is a little diddy from Romans that I think could help put things in perspective.

“They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.

Their throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues they have used deceit, and the poison of asps is under their lips.Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness

Destruction and misery are in their ways:

And the way of peace have they not known….”

We should be thanking O’reilly; he’s only trying to keep the ‘Grinches’ from stealing Christmas.

I’ll agree that Christmas has become too commercialized, but, ironically, that isn’t the part that is being banned. It’s the reason for the celebration that is under siege.
