Even those who favor killing people who follow different gods, who have different physical appearance and culture, who have resources we covet, who have a different form of government or economy, who we suspect might attack us — even they can understand that WE, as citizens, would use any means available to resist an invasion if our army was defeated — just as Iraqi citizens are doing.

A similar situation DID occur in this country a couple hundred years ago when a foreign army attempted to subjugate our citizens. Those who fought against King George’s army, the most powerful in the world in that era, were known as patriots. They fought with whatever means they could muster and used “unacceptable” tactics (like shooting from behind rocks and trees instead of meeting a superior force head-on).

Wouldn’t we do the same again? Wouldn’t we “improvise explosive devices” to destroy their vehicles and kill their troops? Wouldn’t we be “cowardly” enough to use a sniper rifle, mortar or RPG then fade away before masses of troops could arrive? Of course we would. Some of us might be inclined to do damage to the invading army’s home country to “take the war to them”, to make it costly and personal for them and to retaliate for their actions.

How, then, can we fault the citizens of another nation doing exactly the same thing we would do under similar circumstances? How can they be condemned as “terrorists” or “insurgents” when our forefathers who did exactly the same thing were regarded as heroes and patriots?

In the American revolution, during a time where napoleonic wars were the norm (going out into a field, marching toward each other head-on and shooting in turns), Americans were outnumbered and so hid behind trees and rocks and used guerilla warfare against an enemy (England) that only fought us with head-on combat. We hail ourselves as innovative, freedom-fighting heroes.

Know thyself, know thine enemy.

Btw, from way up there, you can’t divide Catholics out of Christianity. The definition of a Christian religion is a Christ-following religion. Catholicism is the original Christianity. If you’re going to set right-winged Intelligent Design teachers apart, how about acknowledging that almost all of them are protestant and usually Baptist or Methodist.

Bart Hobbs, If you support Bush & his war on terror you ought to put your money where your mouth is and enlist. I’m sure the service men & women who are on their second or third tour would perfer that support over the sticker you put on your gas guzzling suv!
