Like It or Not, You’re Funding Right-Wing Rock

These are boom times for right-wing rock, and not just because The Right Brothers’ hit single “Bush Was Right!” now has a music video.

Another “educational” conservative band, Junkyard Prophet, has been busy touring high schools across the country. But these rockers aren’t stickin’ it to the man — they’re being funded by him. The band apparently receives about $1500 per appearance — an amount that several schools have paid out of their drug-free schools funding from the Department of Education. (Junkyard Prophet says it helps students resist peer pressure and “understand the value and beauty of the moral absolutes on which their country was founded.”)

Our sister site, CampusProgress, has details:

The Des Moines Register reported that after one 2004 performance, Junkyard Prophet handed out CDs to a few random students that bore this message: “the death sentence [is] on you due to your sins! The very evidence of your sin will be your death! It is appointed to you to die and after that you will be judged according to your ways! His judgment is so thorough every thought will be brought to the light. When all your sin against God is exposed, how will you escape the damnation of hell?” [...]

[Prophets frontman Bradlee] Dean has also told students that “there is nothing in our Constitution or founding documents about separation of church and state” and criticized the theory of evolution.

According to the band’s website, it has appeared at over 220 schools over the last few years. (Experience Junkyard Prophets for yourself — their music videos are here.) In some instances turned up by CampusProgress, students were told that attendance at the assembly was mandatory and that they would be suspended if they skipped out.

  10. IraqVet says:

Oh well, I don’t really listen to rock anyway, so that is mute…

I am sure you won’t be seeing too many rap artists getting paid to sing his praises!!! Kanye West took care of that for us, so we are permanently off of that list!

But I see many Country and Rock artists being brought and paid for. Clint Black, Toby Keith, and others are selling themselves like hookers on the block for another invite from Bush and his cronies!

  11. gun toting liberal says:

So the lead singer disputes evolution. So do I, after hearing some of this group’s music!

  12. Wayne A. Schneider says:

    #1 Mr. P.,

Your first sentence is exactly my reaction when I read this. OMFG!!

For the life of me, I cannot understand how this administration does not view this as a violation of the First Amendment separation of church and state. By all means, they are absolutely free to sing their songs at their own expense in an attempt to make money, and I (like our other fine vets here) would put my life on the line to defend their right to do just that.

But not at taxpayer expense! We have to do all we can to see to it that the Dems win back both Houses of Congress in 2006 in order to impeach and remove from office the President and Vice President.

It’s not simply that I completely disagree with their ideology; it’s that I disagree with their illegal methods of carrying it out. These guys are harming America worse than Crossfire ever did. Can we get Jon Stewart to tell them that? It worked on CNN.

  13. Suzanne says:

OUTRAGEOUS. And unacceptable. The US Dept. of education has to be called on this. This is illegal. Or contact ACLU to bring a case against the Dept. of Education for using my money to fund this obscenity. I’m going to write them. Also contact your congressmen and senators.

  14. cynical ex-hippie says:

Maybe Jon Stewart could be the opening act.

  15. Pessimist says:

    IraqVet,

I mean no disrespect, sir, but I suspect that you actually intended to say that the point is “moot”. However, I think that the comment, when carefully considered, is actually BRILLIANT.

The point IS mute. That is perfect!

If your initial usage was intentional then I applaud your sense of humor and masterful use of language.

  19. Texan Jesus says:

All hail the American Taliban! Don’t you feel sorry for these guys? This is the best their God can do for them; Dubya and a lame ass Christian based rock band. What abunch of limp dicked wussies.

  20. JIMBO says:

    Iraqvet-

Absolutely. If Johnny Cash were alive, he, along with Rick Rubin would put out some songs that are anti-Bush, because in one of his last interviews, he expressed dismay over the war. The Dixie Chicks also opposed the war and the media and country radio banned them for quite awhile. They have a new CD coming out in January or February of 2006. Kris Kristofferson,
Emmylou Harris, Rodney Crowell and Steve Earle have expressed their dislike of Dubya.

Sadly, I have to let you know that 50 Cent did support the war and thought that Kanye was out of line. Well,
if you have a movie and too much bling too promote, you’d sell out to the establishment. But fortunately, he’s in the minority. We’ve heard a lot of anti-Dubya comments from Eminem and of course, Public Enemy.

By the way, you might consider getting satellite radio.
XM or Sirius will play not only anything that Clear Channel never plays, but even the Dixie Chicks and Mr. Johnny Cash. I have XM and I enjoy it more than the limited playlist my local Clear Channel stations have.

If you have any Qs about satellite radio, let me know.

  21. antidrug says:

good post, but let’s be very clear…

there is nothing wrong with funding messages about avoiding drugs..

the problem is in the religious aspect.

  22. Pessimist says:

    Mr. Schneider,

What is ironic is that a true conservative/republican would be appalled and irate that public funds were being used in this manner. Free enterprise is a beautiful thing and I agree wholeheartedly in the right, and would defend the right as well, of this band to sell their performances to the public.

In this case, though, this is pure, unadulterated, government propoganda and every parent should be beside themselves in outrage. And for the trolls out there, I would be equally appalled if this story was about a group called the “Lefties” and there songs were about how f’d up bush is. All propoganda, especially when forced upon the recipients, is wrong and illegal. There is no “nuance” or gray area.

  23. dano347 says:

Old Testament Rock; light on forgiveness, heavy on retribution. And how hard is it to find words that rhyme with “hell”?

  24. IraqVet says:

Pessimist…I WELCOME intelligent discourse, if we can get to a point of civility and understand the objectives that can help ALL of us…

I am sure we will have disagreements, but the basic principles of freedom should be the same for ALL!

I meant “mute” as in muted and toned down to zero…becaust moot would have offered me no credibility on the subject….

    Thanks, once again!

  25. IraqVet says:

    JIMBO…

I know 50 Cent did not agree with Kanye, but he and Kanye are at odds anyway, and NO ONE would accuse 50 Cent of being a pillar in the black community…

He turned on Vivica Fox, The Game (his employee) and many others. For him (sadly), it is a trend that provides him a headline with little credibility in serious conversations…

However, there has not been ONE record made by a rap artist that supports Bush! There have been many that have opposed him and called him an idiot…

But, any artist (Including Johnny Cash) would have a hard time opposing Bush now, because of the way they are terrorizing the media! The Dixie Chicks, Linda Ronstadt, Kanye West, and others who made statements were censored from other events because of FCC pressure from the White House…

Just proves that (pardon the copyright infringment), “freedom is not free” anymore!

  26. Pessimist says:

    antidrug,

The road to hell is paved with good intentions. The message is irrelevant, the tool itself is wrong. Propoganda is a terrible thing and it is never justified.

Now, I am not saying that I am for or against drugs, religion, teen sex, evolution, etc… However, I will say that I am for freedom, democracy, and education, and propoganda is an enemy of all three.

  27. FedUp says:

Bunch of uneducated, stupid, brainwashed trash with a guitar. I’m starting to hate organized religion.

  28. FedUp says:

#21. I respectfully disagree. If you don’t want me to do drugs because it will destroy my life. Then fine. But if you don’t want me to do them cuz you think I’ll go to hell according to your religion, then back off.

  29. ElectricBassPlayer says:

I’m going to start an Islamic praise-Allah band, and I demand to be funded by the US government exactly the same as these maroons.

There is no legal reason for them to deny funding except religious discrimination.

I’m a bass player. Anyone else? Let’s rock, Allah willing or something like that.

  30. IraqVet says:

    Hey Bassplayer…

You can do a REMIX to Clint Black’s “IRAQ and ROLL”…

    Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha…

Feel free to embellish on the chorus as you see fit…

But, remember, unless you prescribe to the christian initiatives by the White House, your funding may be difficult to pass through…So I’d contact Jerry Farewell (oops Fallwell), Pat Robyousome (oops Robertson), Bishop Eddie Wrong (oops Long) and T.D Fakes (oops Jakes)…

They may be able to help you get along (oops a loan)…

  31. ElectricBassPlayer says:

(IraqVet, I’ll have to find Iraq and Roll. . . I’ve heard OF the song, just not the actual tune itsef. Clint Black’s probably as foreign to me as my kind of music is to you!)

Can you find anything negative about what I’m trying to say? But I bet Christian/right-wingers would HATE the message in my music. Spirituality without religion. Togetherness with each other and the Earth. Everything the NeoCons hate.

PS: I told myself I wouldn’t plug my own music here, but I would like fellow liberals to listen to, and comment on, my music. It’s all free at:

    http://www.nowhereradio.com/artists/?aid=3274/album999

I’d also really like to collaborate with other musicians having the same philosophy. In this day and age it can be done online with a high-speed connection via MIDI. I’m a bassist first and foremost but have nice keyboards (VK-8 and Yamaha Motif), a sequencer, and lots and LOTS of hooks and riffs, half-finished songs, and lyrical ideas. If anyone wants to collaborate, I’m willing!

I think Bradlee is refering to the Taliban’s constitution! EBP- Clint Black’s music is typical of today’s country music….CRAP! He’s married to Lisa Hartman of Knot’s
    Landing.

He represents mostly what I call “Hat Acts.” These hat acts include Tim MacGraw, Toby (Baddumbass) Keith,
Kenny Chesney, John M. Montgomery and Mark Wills. They lack personality or anything that’s vocally interesting. They wear hats to try to look tough, but their music is mostly for wusses. They can’t compare themselves to Cash, Willie, Kristofferson, Waylon or
    Loretta.

    So, you’re not missing anything.

Give a Christian Kid a guitar or a stage and what you get is baloney shoved up their butts as kids. What a terrifying experience being a sidekick of Bush and Company. Like the wolf allowing the hare to ride its back across the current. Now I do not wish to demean the folks who go to church and worship this character called Jesus but I can guarantee, if one had to make the decision to worship Jesus or the almighty buck because their economic stability rested on it I guarantee the buck wins. Far as these christian rock kids go, well, as they found out with natalie holloway she was just looking for a bunch of guys to do her just so she could get the attention she never got before. They are all the same, Brain dead nitwits.

Comment A: Band obviously sucks and has nothing to offer other than propaganda. From what I know kids won’t fall for this bull**** and the band will be lucky if they don’t get their asses kicked.

I got kicked out of high school for being a threat to the student’s “moral”. I had a NIN video at school that the principle found grotesque, so they kicked me out. I sure am thankful that I did’nt stick around for shit like this. I used to listen to Manson back in those days. I wouldn’t have got suspended for skipping this event. I would have been expelled for rushing the stage and wrecking the sound gear. I just listened to these band’s music. Disgraceful. I play drums and would battle these clowns anyday of the week and send them home in tears while they pray and whine to Jesus for making them artisticaly retarded. Why did you make me suck so bad god? Why!

Any of you who had the patience to visit the Junkyard Prophet website . . . I salute you! You have to endure the retarded intro for as long as it takes you to click skip, then the site takes for ever to load. I got bored and left; I’m sure many others will too. My daughter heard about the Bush Was Right MTV campaign at her high school . . . they had a critical discussion about it in her Mass Media class . . YAY. It’s sad that our schools are wasting money on this; I doubt many kids are impressed by it.

  48. goodasgold says:

With two teenage daughters and a housefull of their friends, I am acutely aware of the difficulties facing adolescents today. The text on the CD seems to suggest violence or suicide. At the very least, it is a depressing read. All facets of this report are so disturbing. Just one more thing from this administration that make my gut twist.

I plan to write my representatives and the media, and hope others do the same.

  49. robert pooolemos says:

anybody hear about the kid who got arrested in LA for trying to organize the we cant wait (campaign against Bush and Company on some school campuses)? Its true, they arrested the kid kicked him out of school, is now under House Arrest and lotsa other carppo. Other kids who want Bush out are getting similar treatement in other schools. Dunno how much us small fry have on this blog site but we better get our asses in gear quick!

  50. Jon says:

I’ve never even heard of The Right Brothers, so I checked the video. My favorite part was when they embraced Zell Miller. Off their meds and on the bandwagon. And you know these guys 1)Can’t rock and 2)They’re not a very convincing imitation of people who can. I suspect that most kids aren’t fooled by Junkyard Prophet either. If this is the best propaganda they can come up with, we’re going to win.

  51. Prester John says:

This is revolting. My kids would not only accept the suspension, but I’d applaud them for it.

  52. JIMBO says:

Vivica A. Fox is way older than 50 Cent so she shouldn’t have to hang around with that clown.

These right-wing rock acts have no concept of lyric, melody or talent. I don’t know if Creed was right-wing, but they brought some Christian influence in their music, which is the worst I ever heard. Scott Stapp is the worst rock singer I ever heard. I’m just glad they’re no longer a band.

Oh, and if I ever hear “God Bless the USA” by Lee Greenwood,
I tend to get very violent.

  53. JIMBO says:

    JT-
If the Right Bros. or Junkyard Prophet ever came to your daughter’s school, I’m sure she will thumb her nose at those two sorry excuses for rock music. If her school suspends her, they might as well get a PR guy, cuz’
your daughter would do the right thing. :)

  57. Ernesto Medina says:

    Hey,

As far as I can tell, the schools have the right to invite anyone they want who they think will advance some noteworthy goal. Yeah, I as as bothered as anyone by their garbage religious messagery, but I’m sure that is only one part of their entire repertoire, plus, why can’t high school kids themselves be judgmental and choose what part of a band’s message is important and what is not? They are not stupid and we do not need a political correctness litmus test for the music that bands play for them at their schools. For all I know, I don’t think anyone who’s written on this wall would be mad if some liberal band went on stage at a school and attaked religion and the president, that’s hypocritical and a crappy double-standard. Let high school student themselves decide whether to listen to this crap or not, or are you saying that administrators know better and they should protect the right of their schools to only fund liberal-stamped politically correct music?
What troubles me most is that most people here are saying that we should never, even by mistake, use our classrooms to have a debate about the possibility that non-liberal viewpoints may be correct in some respects. To hell with that, students get a better education, specially at that age, from being exposed to all kinds of opinions, includind trashy non-sensical right-wing music. I was not stupid in high school and neither were my friends, students need no protection from the music or conservative opinions of anyone, they have the right to make up their minds themselves.

I agree with you that high schools should be able to invite a band like Junkyard to perform before their student bodies. However, the line is crossed when “federal taxpayer funds” are used to compensate the band. A second line is crossed when the assemblies are made “mandatory” for students to attend. Hopefully you can see the problem with those two conditions.

I find it funny all you liberals are upset that a group of rock bands are trying to give the youth of this country another option. I see this lot in our society. Liberals upset that some other group is giving our youth a different avenue to walk down. They are only expressing there freedom of speech and freedom of expressing there ideas. Don’t get all out of shape when it just isn’t your ideas.

  79. Ross says:

Well, i find it funny that the democrats won the election, and whoever posted otherwise was wrong. sure the last post here was over 3 months ago, but i’m bored and have nothing to do today. I have no problem with people wanting to express their radical right wing propaganda, though i would encourage everyone to oppose it, BUT NOT at the taxpayers expense.(if it’s a private catholic school, well then the parents are paying for the propaganda themselves) If i had a kid that went to this school, which my tax dollars go to, i’d tell my child to do anything in thier power to protest this show (non violent). Peace.

  80. Aaron says:

It’s ironic that you libs are always trying to pin the facist label on us Republicans. It is only libs that get up in arms when others have a different opinion than theirs. Schools are liberal enough as is. Can’t both sides be represented and actually let the kids decide for themselves. Brainwashing can only be done when one side is represented. This great country is all about choice.

And by the way. Stop all the dramatic whining about right wing conspiracies. It makes you sound like a dramatic teen girl. Give it a rest.
