This seems like a great opportunity for young people. If only I was 20 years younger...

  2. Andrew C Says:

Darn, too bad i'm already teaching high school! I would be so into this. :)

    Good luck to all appplicants.

  3. Andrew C. White Says:

And I thought this was going to be a post about sending interns to infiltrate the White House so we could finally have an impeachment.

  4. Chris in AZ Says:

it probably pays more than I making now, but I'm not moving back to the EC anytime soon...FORGET WASHINGTON, I get agitated enough 3k miles away, if I was there I'd be arrested or flaying around in the middle of the street foaming at the mouth...it won't be pretty...good luck to ya though & keep up the good fight

  5. Acksyn_JAcksyn Says:

Sorry, If find this a Little ODD. Alot of People BRINGING Ideas, Data, Canvassing Web sites, and those with LIFE experience bring further balance to your Cause, Correct?

We have seen this SAME kind of COLLEGE Idealism and what has accomplished thru Groups such as AEI. The Straussian teachings, the want of Power, and Fame corrupted these minds. Most of the Shannanigans of the NEO-KOOKs have not been brought to light by the Corporate Media, IT has been Sadly, mostly concerned blogger citizens of all societies realms, Screaming at the TOP of their or years.

These PEOPLE that have College Education?
They are Bright, and Clever, this is not in question, their ability to disseminate, or to decompile Information, nor to take and pass tests, is not either.

However, You appear to be focusing in one only a small sector of those that have supported this site, DO NOT MAKE the Same Mistake as politicans of past. Many skilled people do not attend College.

You want to BE progressive, yet by this, the people will hear a Squeak, instead of the ROAR you desire. My help is perhaps Un-wanted in your effort? I cannot 'SEE', in my mind, what your rationale here is.

It is this Question that I need Answered, not Why you want the College minds, but Why NOT the Working Mans Mind?
Do you think that perhaps reading a Book at School is TRUE Education? Can I NOT read that same Book at Home?
College Does not make Babies, nor Fire you, or Lay you off, Cut your Pay, drop your Insurance, nor any of these things life Throws at us, unexpectedly as usual. =)

This Hurts me because the Path you are showing is, in part, The Same Path that Has brought us to this Current Debacle of Neo-Conism. (example AEI and its Fascist theosophy of Power hungry IVY League Groupies)

MAY I suggest, to YOU, as a Person Whose Seen enough death, stupidity, wars, Intentional and Not, Whos worked in Corporate Offices, and Sweated in the Hangars Heat, that this PATH you are embarking on, is VERY NARROW, and you would do well to consider WIDENING it AS FAR as you can instead of Bottlenecking it.

Please do not turn my face. -Aj

  6. The Witch Says:

In something of a similar vain to Acksyn, are you unable to offer a salaried position? Because I'm in the area & qualified -- not to mention I'd LOVE to work for CAFP. But, well, I need to pay the bills.

  7. Spudge_Boy Says:

    Think Progress,

I would have to agree with Acksyn_JAcksyn. We just fired an MBA where I work. Book knowledge doesn't always translate to world knowledge. The guy we fired was very smart, but dumb as a freaking rock when it came to real life. I would say the problem is too much time spent in school and not enough time spent in life.

  8. Acksyn_JAcksyn Says:

Today, you have suffered a Great Loss Think Progress, it is only one, and not by my doings, but by yours. Have a great Holiday Season. I wish you ALL Well.

  9. Noisy Democrat Says:

Like others here, I'm wondering why people with more life experience or less college would automatically be considered to be useless or undesirable as interns. I think progressive politics doesn't only need *young* people, it needs *new* people. Someone in their 30s, 40s, 50s, etc. who's now becoming active can bring a wealth of life experience and insight (and often, better writing skills and more highly developed people-skills than a recent college graduate). It's depressing to see how often progressive organizations fall into the trap of assuming that "new and creative" equals "young," at a time in our history when many older people are feeling called to get involved for the first time in their lives.

  10. Flamethrower Says:

    The Conspiracy Lives!!!!!!!!!!

Make sure your next intern has stell toed boots to kick O'Reilly in the Coulters.

  11. Spudge_Boy Says:

I would have to agree with Noisy Democrat also. Age has a lot to do with everything. Many young people aren't even interested in politics. Plus, the younger you are, the less that you have lived through. If the people in college or getting out college are 20-24, that means they were born when Reagan was president, but probably didn't become aware of politics until Bush II was president. They won't even know what a good president is.

What the hell is that supposed to mean? What are we supposed to take away from that?

Posting random stuff you have copied from Google's Adsense derails the topic, just as much a diversionary post from a troll.

  14. Chris in AZ Says:

Hey I went to college (at 19), but not after going through some very revealing life experiences for 2 years curtisy of the CT Judical system, I also worked full time jobs in many different labor (blue collar) positions, and have been involved in politics - in one way or another - since I was about 10 helping my mom with her work on the local dem commitee, so just b/c someone goes to college does not mean they come from privlidge...and those in college on student loans - GET OUT KNOW AND GET A JOB, ANY JOB AND START A CAREER - THE DEGREE IS NOT WORTH THE PAPER ITS PRINTED ON--LET ALONE EVERYTHING YOU HAVE TO PAY ONCE YOU GRADUATE AND YOUR FORBARENCES RUN OUT

  15. Judd Says:

    Thanks for all your interest.

If you are interested in a full time position at the Center for American Progress, there is more information here

  16. Fiercedance Says:

I wouldn't want to be part of an organization ("progressive" or not) that discriminates on the basis of age. Which is exactly what you are doing.

  17. Judd Says:

There is no age discrimination. We are looking for students, no matter what age.

  18. Spudge_Boy Says:

    Judd,

Why does it have to be a student?

That is our question. I am not saying anybody is discriminating. I just think it is a bad choice.

Thanks for getting rid of the stupid posts.

  19. Public Adm. Student Says:

They don't specify an age. It sounds like they set up these requirements because they need specific skills. Undergraduate and Graduate covers a wide range of people.

As the first in my family to get a B.A., and first in graduate school, I can tell you the piece of paper is worth more than the loans I'll pay for the next decade.

If anyone wants to react, go find a government internship that requires MBA's instead of political science, public administration or other degrees. Take it easy, folks. Not all college grads are inexperienced or incompetent.

  20. Adam Piontek Says:

People, lighten up, it's not their general hiring policies, it's an internship position, and internship positions pretty much = college student looking for something to do related to their interests that might get them a boost in their career later on.

Internship positions are typically unpaid or include a very low stipend, because college students are being paid with the experience and future resume benefit that an internship offers, and they're usually getting help from parents or others anyway.

If you're not a college student, chances are an internship position would be a step down. You probably want a full time paid position.

Having said all that, it would be nice to see some of the new progressive think tanks like Think Progress' parent group initiate some programs to find strong liberal minds both young and old, regardless of experience, to help the cause. Some sort of talent search initiatives or some such, requiring a display of abilities, impressive examples, that sort of thing.

In fact, I think Lakoff's Rockridge Institute has done or is doing something like that. Maybe people want to check them out.

"Take it easy, folks. Not all college grads are inexperienced or incompetent."

    Nobody said all.

Don't be black and white. We are saying that TP should widen it's search to other people. There are a lot of people out there that don't have degrees that are really smart.

Bill Gates dropped out and doesn't have a degree.

    Same with Einstein.

Your piece of paper will take you far, but so do brains.

I am surprised at the emphesis on several sites now of acquiring college interns. There is a broad grass roots with broad life experience and college education that are willing to take minimal paying jobs to stop this erosion of American democracy.

So you're 35, but have a 19 year old daughter? Out of wedlock? Which Lie is a Lie, the one that said you're 35 and single, that you didn't believe in sex outside of wedlock, or the one that said you had a 19 year old daughter?

You're such a compulsive liar, it's really sad to see someone as mentally ill as you loose in the world.

  26. Jed Says:

Looking for interns eh? Just don't hire any of these folks please. Scary.

To ditto what Adam P. said, College students are willing to work for nothing over Christmas break/summer vacation/after graduation while most adults have higher standards for themselves.

Nope. You're thinking of the losers who were trying to guess or said they knew. I don't have a "constructed personna". I'm sure you hate me enough just as I am.

Comment by Easter Lemming Liberal News

No doubt there's quite a few liberal losers and 60's throw-backs that don't have a life and wouldn't mind furthering the destruction of America's moral fiber but you forget one thing.... They don't have a nice tight ass.

I am disabled and cannot work (in the accepted definition of the word), however I sit in front of my computer for many, many hours a day. I abhor the politics of today and would love the opportunity to contribute to your organization. I have an extremely curious mind and research everything I can about the issues you present, also I can spell and have a pretty good command of the english language.
I think that what Acksyn_JAcksyn had to say was pretty right on.
You might think about coming up with opportunities for those of us that have been around awhile and have seen and participated in the changes that came about in the '60's and 70's. It seems to be one of the over-all problems with employment and the economy that life experience is given less importance than sitting in a class room working with hypotheticals.
    Regards, Terri

  33. D. Agnew Says:

Terri is right on. I did my internship at 28, and I was older than most full-time employees, and I made more money (at my "real" job). Sometimes people want college age interns so they are not challenged, or to feel more important. I hope that is not the case here, as this is a solid organization that should attract quality participants. If you're not getting college credits for the "internship" position, then its just volunteer work. Open it up to everyone, and look for people with something more to contribute than young idealist dreams. Those of us who are still idealists at 40 are much, much better at making our case and explaining our reasoning. Research methods can easily be taught, so the value of college training is minimal, in my opinion.

Good luck to everyone who will apply! America needs your voice to be loud and clear!

  34. Natabyte Says:

JEEZ. Why do some folks have to be so nasty while discussing a simple "call for interns"? I suggest a review the Terms of Agreement before blogging in again.

Look. If you want a job, read the site's job listings (there are several). Get over your insecurity about the fact that you are not at this very, infinitesimal moment a young college student. And yes, OFTEN, people over the age of 22 and non-college students get internships--so go get one if you want one.

I mean, really, is there truly nothing more important to discuss at the moment? Have you read the news today? I gotta say, I'm left feeling much less optimistic about the future of American Progress.

  40. James Willis Says:

I can fully understand the call for interns that are college students or recent graduates. Young people such as these are by and large unattached to the myriad of social and economic responsibilities of older americans. I know that in my own personal situation it would be next to impossible to intern and oversee my many business interests and also fulfill my familial obligations. Having said that i do believe many americans in all walks of life have many ideas and abilities that need mining by organizations such as yours. Reading the posts it seems to me that many people across this nation are frustrated by the fact that a forum for "working people" to express themselves and to share ideas and possibly have a hands on experience in the area of policy making is either non-existant or has minimal impact on the minds of our university educated brothers and sisters.
