The “biggest threat facing this country is weapons of mass destruction in the hands of a terrorist network,†Bush said during last year’s Presidential debate. “And that’s why proliferation is one of the centerpieces of a multi-prong strategy to make the country safer… And we’ve been effective.â€
The 9/11 Public Discourse Project — formerly known as the 9/11 Commission — just released an assessment of Bush’s progress on the issue. Despite his rhetoric, they aren’t impressed:

The 9/11 Commission concluded that the administration’s “current efforts fall far short of what we need to do” and recommends President Bush “request the personnel and resources, and provide the domestic and international leadership, to secure all weapons grade nuclear material as soon as possible.” Good idea.
Now this is the kind of s^&$ we should be discussing. When talking to your friends put this up against the Dick told us:
December 5th, 2005 at 3:44 pm
But didn’t you hear about the new schools being built? And we got Al Queda’s #3 man- for the fifth time! Why don’t we hear the good news about the War on Terra?
December 5th, 2005 at 3:44 pmWorst. President. Ever.
December 5th, 2005 at 3:48 pmWell, Bush is the world’s most dangerous terrorist. How can you expect him to prevent himself from obtaining WMDs?
December 5th, 2005 at 3:49 pmListen. We can either fight the “War of Christmas” or the “War on Terror”.
Right know we must focus on the real threat to America, so put your candy canes in a lock-box and grab your shot gun and stand in front your Christmas tree and shoot the first liberal, atheist, Muslim or homsexual who tries to steal it.
Please Osama, can we get a time-out while we defeat the liberal Grinches!

December 5th, 2005 at 3:51 pmGary…put George in a room with only a rocket and he still won’t know what to do, man if the terrorist were as dumb as dubbya, we’d all be a lot safer
December 5th, 2005 at 3:53 pmSee, Shrubbery thinks a “D” is fine, after all “D”’s got him through Harvard and Yale.
December 5th, 2005 at 3:56 pmYou mean we’re not safer than we were before 9/11? I thought for sure all the increased airport security combined with not allowing Packer fans to wear antlers to games would have sent Al Qaeda running for the hills of Bora Bora.
December 5th, 2005 at 3:56 pmAnd Bush thought that being president would help his GPA!
December 5th, 2005 at 3:56 pmThe Potemkin Presidency strikes again.
December 5th, 2005 at 3:58 pmHow do Potemkin villages stand up to WMD?
Maybe we can create a whole Potemkin country
like they did with the fake town in “Blazing Saddles”?
Oh wait, we already did that in Iraq.
#8,
We used to be safe, but now they are letting
December 5th, 2005 at 4:00 pmthe nail-clippers back on the planes so we
aren’t safe anymore.
Hey, haven’t you heard? There’s a war on, and we need tax cuts for everyone (making $100K or more). First responders in urban areas that could actually use the funding? F ‘em. Those places don’t vote GOP nearly as much as the places terrorists have probably never heard of, or wouldn’t bother targeting. Beefing up port security? Same story. Why spend money effectively when you can throw it at your cronies and get a little more “kickback” bang for your buck?
December 5th, 2005 at 4:00 pmOk that will probably be the straw that brings UBL out of captivity. Real soon, I would bet on it. How many times will it be said that W is the biggest threat to this country.
December 5th, 2005 at 4:00 pmRemember also what the 911 Commission also said that the govt. needed to be more creative, so more dope smokers and artists against terrorism please. DSAAT, yeah that’s the ticket. Is this a record for depressing article for this blog in one day? Can you say Deer Hunter?
This seems about par for the course for GWB. Actions speak louder than words, and all he has are words.
December 5th, 2005 at 4:03 pmGood thing WMD wasn’t the reason we invaded Iraq.
December 5th, 2005 at 4:05 pmHow long before the White House sends surrogates out to bash the 9/11 Public Discourse Project for making us less safe by publishing this report? I can hear it now:
I say it comes out of Limbannity’s butt(s) tomorrow.
December 5th, 2005 at 4:05 pmstill think the war on terra is making us all safer?
December 5th, 2005 at 4:06 pmHere is a book for all you news junkies to try to read, when I say try I mean not to impune your intelligence , but it is so detailed and after about 1/2 the book you really start to realize these folks are organized beyond, and you can’t argue with some one who has nothing to loose, not to mention picks up72 Virgins for being a team player.
December 5th, 2005 at 4:06 pm“Inside Al Qaeda” by Rothan Gunaratna. Berkly Book 2002, 2003
If you think the 9/11 Commission’s report card is bad, you should Bush’s Iraq Report Card.

December 5th, 2005 at 4:07 pmYeah Zoo,
This “All hat, no cattle” style of management is
December 5th, 2005 at 4:08 pmreally hurting us.
You would think that on this ONE issue Bush would
actually do something real, but you would be wrong.
All kidding aside, this is really bad situation to be in.
It is not like this is new news, but this a stark reminder,
as was Katrina (reponse to disaster).
#17 Please stop. Promoting those kinds of things do nobody any good. Wiki-wiki is no authority on anything (ask Siegenthaler).
December 5th, 2005 at 4:08 pmThis report is no different than Bush’s preparation for an attack prior to 9/11. The inept and incompetent manner in which Bush and Rice ignored the many warnings from different sources is singularly noteworthy. His ineptness and incompetence has spread over so many areas of his governance that listing them becomes an excercise in futility. The congress of the United States does not play second fiddle to Bush for ineptness and incompetence, just add criminal corruption. To think for a moment that this excuse for a president and his administration would have the security and welfare of the American people as a priority is fallacy. This government is totally dependent on lobbyists and benefactors for its direction and support.
December 5th, 2005 at 4:10 pmHave all of you read the report (or are you responding to the blurb by Think Progress)?
1) This is a bi-partisan group … their stated to goal is not to “praise or criticize … but to be constructive”. (Note – this is not Think Progress’ goal)
2) They state that “we are safer … but we are not as safe as we need to be”. “We see some positive changes … our leadership is distracted”.
3) They cite info. sharing, FBI reform, risk based allocation of funding, congressional reform, WMDs and that the responsibility for change “rests with Congress and the president”.
4) They end with a bi-partisan call to action.
I guess that bi-partisan call falls on deaf ears when Think Progress labels this report as a poor grade on only the administration. The point of the report was that the finger pointing (among other things) is distracting ALL the leadership. This is not a Democrat or Republican thing – it’s both. GWB needs to do more, so does Congress (both parties), as do the cities, etc. To believe that this is somehow a singular criticism of GWB is false.
December 5th, 2005 at 4:44 pmRepublicans yet again failing to secure America from terror.
On the one hand none of this is surprising. Republicans are so busy trying to loot the treasury for their wealth friends and campaign contributors that they could care less about securing us normal people from a terror attack. They…
December 5th, 2005 at 4:49 pmWait a minute Jacko, who is in charges of both houses of Congress and the presidency? Don’t pass the buck our way, if your beloved cons wanted to be in charge, you have to take the blame when you fumble the ball. I guarantee that the Democrats won’t stand in your way. Not that they could, seeing as, you know, they’re the minority party.
But don’t worry, you’ll be able to blame the Democrats starting Jan 2007 when they take Congress, but I suspect they will be too busy with impeachment proceedings.
December 5th, 2005 at 4:54 pm#27
December 5th, 2005 at 4:56 pmPoint taken, however it still falls at the feet of GWB. I go back to my first comment…they assured us that the only way we would be safe is if we kept them in charge. They hold the keys. If he was half the leader the wingnuts claim him to be there would be more progress. And you can say that both parties need to do more in Congress, but the Republicans continue to exert their heavy handed control that will not let the Dems do anything.
I’m sure it helps to call the other cultures of the world “Evil”… When will these wingnuts get the wake up call that our ignorant president and his henchmen started this????
German school children are required to travel as a part of tehir education, so that they develop an awareness of other cultures and learn how to respect others. We need to implement the same thing here in America. I grew up in a Republican, traditional, Christian family. After college, I started traveling around the world, and you know what? I’m, by choice, now a liberal, vegan Atheist – and finally happy living with respect for others rather than judgment, hate and war. You all should try living on this side of the fence for a while. It really is much greener over here. Fewer of us in prison than you guys… I promise, if you gave this side a shot, you wouldn’t go back. I never will!
December 5th, 2005 at 5:02 pmThis should be proof that this administration does not care about the state of the nation — they care only about the state of their bank accounts. If the nation suffers, they will not.
December 5th, 2005 at 5:03 pm#31, You make a good point. We are too provincial and uninformed, inexperienced and self-centered with respect to the rest of the world.
December 5th, 2005 at 5:12 pmYou’d think, with the extremely large number of bodyguards bush needs when he travels inside or out of the US, that this is apparent…why won’t bush show his face in public, or address america at large…the us is not safer and everything this administration has done up to this point has lessened the safety america can feel, against WMD or anything else
December 5th, 2005 at 5:12 pmBiggest threat to America is natural disasters. Does anyone really thing a few misguided terrorists can do as much damage as a Katrina Class Hurricane? And because the Republicans/RW zealots don’t believe in Global Warming, nothing is being done to address it. Consequently, we’ll have many more Katrina’s in the future and we won’t be prepared for those either. Of course, this administration has failed miserably on this issue, too.
The GWOT is joke. The real threat to our country is not investing in our infrastructure and not preparing for natural disasters.
December 5th, 2005 at 5:37 pmHow can the commission release this report while our troops are in harm’s way? Don’t they understand that this kind of criticism will only demoralize the president and if he’s demoralized what kind of danger does that put our troops in? Unbelievable. I can’t believe I’m hearing this. The Democrats on this panel who distracted the Republican members by saying Merry Christmas and causing them to nod off will pay dearly. This is partisan politics at its worst.
December 5th, 2005 at 5:37 pmNo, I’m Sean Hannity!
December 5th, 2005 at 5:39 pmI’m a big dummy.
December 5th, 2005 at 5:41 pmWell, Didn’t we defeat the terrorists when we invaded Afghanistan and Iraq? Wasn’t that supposed to make it all go away?
December 5th, 2005 at 5:48 pmOf course the Bush Admin doesn’t want to do anything as far as WDMs are concerned. If they were concerned, then we would not be having a scandal in which a covert agent whose job it was to help stop proloferation of wmds, was outed and her cover company blown, allagents associated with her having to be pulled out of the field, before they were killed.
This administration crippled the cia in finding WMDs before they find us, with this one illegal, tratorous action.
December 5th, 2005 at 5:52 pmren and stimpy” Happy Happy Joy Joy”
December 5th, 2005 at 6:04 pmBush and a failing grade? Can’t say this is the first time I’ve heard that before.
One thing I have learned about the intel community is the huge bureaucracy involved. However, four years is plenty of time to get SOMETHING done, not the little baby steps taken thus far.
December 5th, 2005 at 6:25 pmI’m very dissapointed in Bush and Co. They know exactly where to find the biggest terrorists in the world and THEY DO NOTHING. For example, I’d have the firing squad all warmed up and waiting for the order from the Federal Court.
(SAN ANTONIO) — Saying the “idea that we’re going to win the war in Iraq is an idea which is just plain wrong,” Democratic National Chairman Howard Dean predicted today that the Democratic Party will come together on a proposal to withdraw National Guard and Reserve troops immediately, and all US forces within two years.
Dean made his comments in an interview on WOAI Radio in San Antonio.
“I’ve seen this before in my life. This is the same situation we had in Vietnam.
Yep, it’s a lot like Vietnam except that the useful idiots/Enemy Within were not the leaders of the Democratic Party. Now they are. One hopefully two differences though. In Vietnam we didn’t win, the Filthy Left won that one. We will this time. And two; we didn’t hang the traitors like Fonda and Kerry. Hopefully this time we will.
December 5th, 2005 at 6:34 pmGood stuff IRightI- you sound just like someone from Lucianne.com. That parody stuff you write, gold, just gold.
December 5th, 2005 at 6:38 pmHow DO you capture the insanity of the wingnuts so eloquently?
Plunger,
Dude, do you even read? I didn’t, and still don’t, think your post was worth responding to. ‘Point Taken’ was for Giacomo’s post #27.
If that is how well you read, then it’s no wonder you are into conspiracy theories.
December 5th, 2005 at 6:42 pmThe President who ramped up Vietnam and went at it full force was a Democrat, I Right I.

Trollin’ in this thread too?
December 5th, 2005 at 7:26 pmIt’s probably Kerry’s fault somehow.

Comment by For Truth
I seem to recall that. LBJ was a pig but he wasn’t a traitor. In a nutshell that describes the difference between the Liberals of the 50’s and 60’s and the Liberal of today. If you want to be a liberal and vote for liberals these days you have to be a Republican. If you want to be a conservative and vote for a conservative you are screwed.
December 5th, 2005 at 7:39 pmSooo, starting a war by faking evidence doesn’t make LJB a traitor? At least you are consistent, Adolf
December 5th, 2005 at 7:49 pmDamn I Right I, it sure took you a while to think up something to post on this thread! And of course, wayyyy of topic.
December 5th, 2005 at 7:52 pmIGNORE THE TROLLS!
Plunger: there’s a question to ask if ever you find yourself at a press conf and the Chimp’s beady eyes alight on you:
“Mr President, do you consider the completion of the Israeli wall and the movement of the Israeli capital to Jerusalem as a necessary precursor to the Second Coming and therefore should those precursors guide American foreign policy in the region?”
December 5th, 2005 at 8:01 pmWe’ll need a few more 9/11’s before our government anywhere near serious about getting ready for a war on terrorism. Iraq has more to do with oil, and you rarely hear anything about the war in Afghanistan. In the meantime, Osama is hanging out having tea with the locals in Pakistan and plotting his next moves, Al-Quaeda and Al-Zarkowi are sharing more than just a first name and Bush and company are still utterly clue less about what it’s gonna take to fight a war on terror. Think I’ll sleep with my teddy bear tonight, I’ll probably be safer that way.
December 5th, 2005 at 8:11 pmPlunger–
December 5th, 2005 at 8:28 pmOk…the number thing is odd and I have no reason to doubt you. However, that still doesn’t prove you read anything. If you took any time to read the content of my post it is more than clear it had nothing to do with your conspiracy theories.
Hopefully the American military will intervene on old king george and help with regime change in America.
December 5th, 2005 at 9:13 pmSince IRI brought it up, if you want to blame Viet-Nam on anybody, you should blame Churchill (Winston, not Ward). If winnie hadn’t been so concerned about the effect on British colonies after WWII, FDR would have had Viet-Nam under a UN Trusteeship after the war. He and Stalin were agreed, but Winston demurred and so the French were allowed to resume ownership.
December 5th, 2005 at 9:33 pmThe Viet Minh were the principal guerilla force fighting the Japanese in VN during the war. FDR refused to provide direct support because of DeGaulle but he also wouldn’t authorize shipping to transport Free French troops there either.
Sorry, way off topic but I couldn’t help myself.
Bush&Co are in charge of everything — yet they are in denial on this “report card.” There is no excuse – more than four years after 9/11, they have failed to adequately protect the nation. That’s it. Bottom line. They will try to blame anyone and everyone; but they’re in charge, they are incompetent and they won’t admit it. There will be no remedial class for them, or make up homework — they have failed.
December 5th, 2005 at 9:34 pmEven worse than this failure, their invasion of Iraq and the debacle that has become have worsened the threat to us.
Bushie’s inaction on Homeland Security to me is an admission that 9-11 was an inside job.
If Bushie really thought terrorists alone could pull off an attack 9-11 style he would have gotten off of his butt.
December 5th, 2005 at 9:42 pmHow many Nukes are in the hands of America?
December 5th, 2005 at 9:50 pmwho has acountability of them?
How many more do they plan on making?
whats going on at area 51?
What is going on with Yucca Mountains nuclear waste sites?
what is america doing with D.U.?
I have alot of ?s
How many nuke subs are floating around in the ocean?
how many subs are nuke powered?
is america in fact experimenting with nuke powered flying objects or nuke powered fighting aircraft?
is it americas intention to develop a space war nuke sattilite? etc, etc…?
what is that plan that fmr Pres. Ronald Reagan wanted?
December 5th, 2005 at 9:54 pmI totally agree, Susan, and isn’t it amazing how many people refuse to look at the facts! What facts we can get that is.
December 5th, 2005 at 9:56 pmWe also need to take back the phrase “conspiracy theory”: to me it just means a workable hypthesis about a conspiracy. Lots of those to go around! How did it come to mean crackpot anyway?
I guess we will be vindicated when the truth comes out (as it always, slowly, does).
and thats just a start.
December 5th, 2005 at 10:02 pmThis MUST be a bogus story. I mean, Georgie and co have been fighting a ‘war on terra’ for 3 years now.
O’Reilly, Hannity and Limbaugh all tell us that becuase we haven’t had a terrorist attack on us since 9-11 it is proof positive that these guys are doing a ‘heck of a job’. And those guys wouldn’t lie to us. They are Republicans.
December 5th, 2005 at 10:06 pmPutting an expensive space-based missile defense system would only encourage rogue nations to build cheaper systems capable of taking the space-based hardware out of service, said Ivan Eland of the Cato Institute.

December 5th, 2005 at 10:43 pmmaybe we,ll be alive tommorow for some more commenting?
gnite
Im sorry, did I miss something?
Wasn’t it this President who got re-elected on keeping us safe? What part of this war does not look to you guys to be nothing more than a get rich quick scheme by Busch and Co?
It’s like, everyone gets paid, so no one complains. Remember how he tried to pay everyone off? Like 300 or 600 bucks was gonna change any lives.
He even spent 30 Million dollars to send out a letter about 2 weeks before you got your refund check, telling you how great he was for giving you the money, oh yea, and the money’s on the way.
Remember all that? He likes to just, hand out money, so now we find he used his scare tactics, to use our tax dollars earmarked for Homeland Defense, to buy Air Conditioned Trash Trucks and send DC workers to self help courses.
Oh but I shouldn’t complain. It’s unpatriotic.
December 6th, 2005 at 12:41 amflunked.
so let me get this right, the country re-elected this man on the basis that he would divert another terrorist attack and generally make the country a safer place to live, and he gets these grades from the bipartisan 911 commission ? do I feel vindicate…
December 6th, 2005 at 5:18 amThis may be a glimmer of hope, but he was talking to the Polish Defense Minister. I’ll believe ‘follow up questions are back’ when I see it here to an American official. I cannot yet imagine the press will stop cowering under Karl Rove’s watchful eye.
December 6th, 2005 at 9:04 amHere’s my take on a few things: we are all partially responsible for the condition we are in now.
1) Elections: there is a high likelyhood that Bush did NOT win on authenticity. The GAO has shown grave problems with Diebold machines which were used in both the 2000 and 2004 elections. Other major problems existed during the 2004 elections, primarily in Ohio. YET: have we, common American Joe, done anything? Have we asked any questions? Have we gotten off our gluteals to find out how to improve the system? No. One would have thought that after the 2000 escapade that we would have been a bit more active in exacting changes that made voting better and fairer. I haven’t seen any movement there.
2) Communication: It’s good to see people starting to sit up and take notice and reaching out to others of like mind, but are we consistently trying to talk to the suits in Congress? Are ‘we’ consistently emailing, calling, writing, and showing up to their photo-ops to ask the tough questions? I’m not seeing it.
Bottom line, we as the disgruntled majority need to get actively organized and involved to help ensure that some small ‘group’ (PNAC) doesn’t sit up shop in our government and run us into the ground. They didn’t get there on democratic merit. They hijacked the process both by election irregularities and throwing out negative innuendos and blatant lies with no effective response/rebuttal. Hence a major reason why these lies have been believed.
We, as the American culture, have lulled ourselves into a false sense of reliance on MSM. We don’t consciously ask if what they’re saying is true; we just naturally believe them because most of us don’t make a concentrated/conscious effort to lie, so therefore, we don’t think others do.
We need to become active in making sure our election/voting system is fair, honest, and truly reflects the dictates of the American people.
We need to start talking, frequently, to our representatives, and include them in our discussion ‘loop’. Then they won’t be able to say that we weren’t talking, and to them.
There’s blame, and then there’s responsibility. We’re all responsible in some measure. We need to be taking our responsibility seriously and using it effectively.
I’m just sayin…

Here’s a follow up question for you; “Why did you deliberately insert the word “SO” making it a statement of predetermined fact, instead of the word “Do” making it a question?
I think what we need around here is a little more honesty Plunger. From you. Or would that cramp your style? And while we’re at it, why are you trying to make it your business what the US intelligence agencies are doing when the work is designed to keep terrorists off your back? Are you a self hating American?

December 6th, 2005 at 9:53 pmTo run for or even Be the Pres of the Divided States of America”.
Facts: Al Qaeda caused 9/11. Afghanistan harbored al Qaeda. Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11. Hussein had minimal or no ties with al Qaeda.
Events:
1. 9/11
2. America takes Afghanistan and starts to go after al Qaeda
3. Before securing Afghanistan and finishing aQ, America attacks Iraq?
4. America makes the same mistake again and doesn’t properly secure Iraq or finish aQ, leading to a brutal insurgency, the deaths of thousands of American soldiers, and the revival of al Qaeda across Asia?
5. America secretly brutally tortures known or vaguely suspected terrorists in Cuba, Iraq and across Eastern Europe, which does not result in the capture of bin Ladin but inflames world opinion against us and fuels support for aQ.
6. America fails to increase its preparedness for years after 9/11. As a result, hundreds more Americans needlessly die in hurricane Katrina.
Did anyone listen to Cheney’s speech today? He still says we needed to go into Iraq because of 9/11 and the terrorist threats that preceded it.
THE MISTAKES IN THIS ADMINISTRATION’S RIDICULOUS, IRRESPONSIBLE POLICY ARE SO OBVIOUS, EVEN WITH THE BENEFIT OF HINDSIGHT. HOW CAN ANYONE WITH HALF A BRAIN IN THEIR HEAD KEEP DEFENDING THESE REPUBLICANS? THEY ARE SO STUPID! SO MANY PEOPLE ARE DYING AND AT RISK BECAUSE OF THEIR NONSENSE!
