Speaker of the House J. Dennis Hastert is putting the nation’s business on hold to give Tom DeLay time to complete his criminal trial:
House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert and his top lieutenants are seeking to avoid a divisive intra-party leadership fight…Hastert has scheduled the first House session of 2006 for Jan. 31 — after a holiday break of more than a month, and two weeks after senators are due to return to Washington. The late start gives DeLay, a Texas Republican, a greater amount of time with which to dispose of the charges, as new leadership elections could not occur until the House is back in session.
Hastert makes it clear that, in his view, giving DeLay one last shot to hold on to his leadership post is more important than doing work for the American people.
More at the Daily DeLay.
You MUST be joking about this. They’re in effect–right?–giving themselves a MONTH VACATION??? Can they really do this? After voting themselves pay raises, they can now vote themselves a WHOLE MONTH extra vacation??
This is just incredible. So, what’s supossed to happen for the whole month of January? The gov’t shuts down on that side? Can we pro-rate their salaries and ask for 1/12th of it back?
December 7th, 2005 at 10:50 amWhat’s next? Tammy Wynette standing on the floor of the House singing “Stand by Your Man”?!
December 7th, 2005 at 10:53 amI think this move will be “divisive”.
December 7th, 2005 at 10:55 amFIRE Hasert along with Delay, Rove, Cheney, eyc…
December 7th, 2005 at 10:57 amAs Dannk stated previously”Establish a Power Base.
Well, This is It. Rag on Hasert!
They don’t represent regular people. They represent the fortunate. Think of this in 2006.
Bush is pushing phase 2 of his fantasy in Iraq. All this while the Gulf is still in shambles from Katrina. When are we going to start to refocus on AMERICA?

Well, since Congress doesn’t really do much of anything anyway except push the religious right agenda, why doesn’t he just disband Congress until the 2006 elections?
December 7th, 2005 at 11:11 amAnd what will he do if DeLay is convicted? Hold session in his prison cell?
Perhaps our representitives can provide a little relief for our troops. Delivering supplies from Bagdad Airport to the Green zone would show a bit of support. I’m sure that they all know how to drive.
December 7th, 2005 at 11:11 amInteresting.
December 7th, 2005 at 11:13 amIs the whole corrupt crony conservative movement
willing to go down in flames over the BugMan?
I’m think this shutdown might not go over too
well in the post holiday doldrums.
It appears that the curtain is lifting
on what the real GOP agenda has been
all along.
Contact your congressman/woman and demand to kow where they stand on this and raise a big ass stink about it. Make this make the MSM news and make these bastards own it. God bless America.
December 7th, 2005 at 11:15 amWhat. The. F*ck?
December 7th, 2005 at 11:18 amis it that hard for him to get a continuance??? (sp)
December 7th, 2005 at 11:18 amYet more hijinx from the Banana Republicans.
December 7th, 2005 at 11:25 amOne more thing–he’s going to want a change of venue. Probably other legal maneuvers, too. This will all take time. Will Hasert keep extending the start time to accomodate ALL of the legal crap Delay is sure to attempt?
December 7th, 2005 at 11:30 amDems Of Anyone
Need a “POWERBASE”.
Murtha, Dean,Wesley Cark, John Kerry, Ralf Nader, Babara Boxer.

WHERE ARE THE MINDS OF SO CALLED GREAT MILITARY LEADERS THESE DAYS?

REFORM,REDRESS,CHANGE THE COURSE! To stay the course will be catastrophic!
December 7th, 2005 at 11:40 amHey Punchy, we’re in the wrong business………
December 7th, 2005 at 11:42 amAs sickened as I am by this in terms of cronyism and corruption, the less this ultra-right congress does the better.
December 7th, 2005 at 11:45 amA blatant display of cronyism at the expense of the people’s government. They will give themselves more than a month-long vacation because one of their “friends” is a criminal, and they want to buy him some time.
December 7th, 2005 at 11:50 amWe should write all the congressmen and express our opinion of their outright contempt for the work of the people.
But Morgan,
This is a two-fer:
1) Strong criticism for supporting cronies
at the expense of the nation
2) Being quietly pleased that the corrupt crony
conservativres are side-lined
Everybody wins in the “Save the BugMan” game!
December 7th, 2005 at 11:50 amPopcorn, peanuts, hot-dogs….get your
tickets now!
I just emailed Mr. Hastert:
Thank you for delaying the start of Congress. It is clear you realize how important it is to have the ethically challenged Tom Delay front and center. Democrats will be sure to use this to focus on the culture of corruption… Brilliant!
December 7th, 2005 at 11:51 amI image you liberals here would attack Hastert. Call him a fat old pasty-faced fart, like us rednecks did to Murtha. Go ahead, call him DeLay’s unprincipled and unscrupulous bitch. Don’t hurt my feelings one bit.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but here a few quotes for you that politician Dennis Hastert as muttered over the years that show what kind of world this man is in:
“Just like families live within their budgets, the Federal Government must live within its means. We have passed appropriations bills that have been fiscally responsible while recognizing our national priorities.”
“By restrained spending and by cutting the budget, the Republican polocies are helping to keep our economy strong.”
“Too many employers have said they are unable to find skilled workers.”
“What makes America great is that we can come together during a national tragedy.”
I mean, on the last one, Hastert evidently wasn’t referring to Katrina or helping the city of New Orleans, but to helping out DeLay’s ass.
December 7th, 2005 at 11:52 amOf course DeLay wants a change in venue. The last thing he needs is to stand in the judgement of people affected by his policies!
DeLay divided Austin among four districts, they lost their representation.
December 7th, 2005 at 11:54 amDelay has changed judges (which, by the way, would not happen to anyone else), he has changes venue (again, only for him) and he still cannot weasel out of it.
We are witnessing a man squirming with everything he has, and, baby, he has a lot more than you or I, and it won’t work. He cannot escape JUSTICE.
Think before you vote trolls, sometimes, and I know this hurts, they lie to you.
December 7th, 2005 at 12:01 pmThis absolutely makes my blood BOIL!!! Let’s see….the folks in D.C. just returned (?) from Thanksgiving “recess”…soon they will have the Holiday/Christmas “recess”….Hastert wants to shut down until the end of January???? Hmmmmm…what the hell are we paying these creeps for? A pay raise??!! Is this Twilight Zone, or what? Bushboy must need another R&R on the cattle-less, horse-less brush-filled ranchette…yeah, that’s it. What comes after angry? Rage doesn’t quite do it!
December 7th, 2005 at 12:02 pmGive Uncle Dennis Hatert a call, let him know that you support his efforts to keep Tom Delay, the King of K Street firmly ensconced in his corrupt throne.
Let him know that you are proud of Tom Delay always fighting against the minimum wage raise whenever it comes to the floor of the House. Even though Tom Delay ALWAYS supports a congressional payraise.
Let Speaker Hastert know that you are proud that Tom Delay, who was outraged in 1994 at how much the Democrats were wined and dined by the lobbyists in DC when the Democrats ran the house. Now, with a doubling or more of lobbyists in DC, flying Tom Delay to Scotland for golf trips and to the Marianas Islands, Tom Delay is not so outraged about lobbyists. Heck, he even took a lobbyist paid flight to his arraignment in Texas courtesy of the tobacco lobby.
Let Speaker Hastert know you are proud that Dick Cheney will go to a fund raiser to keep Tom Delay out of jail, but he won’t go to an American soldiers funeral or raise money for Katrina victims.

Were at war in Iraq where an average of 28 American young men are being killed weekly.
We have an entire STATE full of people still displaced from their homes months after a natural disaster
The debt is skyrocketing
Iran is threating Israel
Bin Laden is still on the loose
Half the republican memebers of Congress are under investigation for being criminals
And all the REPUGNICAN led Congress can do is TAKE A MONTH OFF???
Yea I-AMTOOSTUPDITOEVERSEETHETRUTHAINT-I, you guys are “good for America”.
That is assuming you define good as INCOMPETENT CRIMINALS.
December 7th, 2005 at 12:12 pmDo these guys know that there’s an election coming up?
December 7th, 2005 at 12:13 pm“Clean” him.
December 7th, 2005 at 12:16 pmWORFEUS,
I mostly agree with you other than that, in
December 7th, 2005 at 12:17 pmmy opinion, they are quite competent as criminals.
It is in serving the country that they are incompetent.
Good point :|
December 7th, 2005 at 12:19 pmI mean come on, a vacation????
Oh yea, they really DESERVE a vacation. Let’s make it a PERMENANT one!
December 7th, 2005 at 12:21 pmWORFEUS is obviously agitated this afternoon.
I think it was seeing Bush doing another one of his canned speaches to one of his “handpicked” audiences.
I am wondering when little cane is going to come from the curtain and yank his hillbilly butt off the stage.
Maybe we could get a GONG, you know, like the GONG SHOW?
We could just GONG him, and bring in the next act.
December 7th, 2005 at 12:24 pm#5 – When we decide to assert our constitutional rights. It’s all up to us the people. I’m thinking of voting against my representative even though he’s a Democrat, just because I think the whole House needs to be turned out.

You gotta post links, so we can watch the video, read the article, play the game, see the animation, whatever.

I would have to say I agree. The longer they are on vacation, the less ahrm they can do to the country.
December 7th, 2005 at 12:29 pmYou’re totally right Afterthought! We get the upside and the downsides of cronyism. Who says the repugs don’t give back to the people!
December 7th, 2005 at 12:31 pm#22
Joe,
I think he was talking about Trent Lotts house in LA. When it was damaged (not destroyed) Bush called on everyone to help him.
December 7th, 2005 at 12:32 pmThis gives Bush time to play “Brokeback Mountain” with Cheney, De Lay, and Rummy at the ol’ texas corral.
December 7th, 2005 at 12:34 pmI THINK WE AS AMERICANS HAVE NO CHOICE BUT TO GO AFTER THESE GUYS ONCE AND FOR ALL. THESE PEOPLE ARE OVER THROWING THE GOVERNMENT OF THE USA. WHY SHOULD WE NOT REBEL AGAINST THIS? I SUGGEST EVERYONE WHO READS WHAT IS GOING ON TO SATURATE YOUR NEIGHBORHOODS WITH THE SHAM HASTERT FRITZ AND BUSH CALL THE UNITED STATES CONGRESS.
December 7th, 2005 at 12:34 pmProgressive and Proud,
I thought Tom Delay said:
“I have done nothing wrong. … I am innocent,” DeLay told a Capitol Hill news conference during which he criticized the Texas prosecutor, Ronnie Earle, repeatedly. DeLay said the charges amounted to “one of the weakest and most baseless indictments in American history.”
If he is innocent, then why all the change requests and such? Shouldn’t he be able to prove he is innocent? Can’t he just stand in front of any judge and show that he didn’t do anything wrong?
I think putting Congress on hold for a month is going to seriously backfire if Delay is found guilty. This very well could be a huge mistake.
What about the other two investigations he is tied to, Cunningham and Abramoff? Does this mean that Congress will be on hold until all three scandals are cleared up?
December 7th, 2005 at 12:38 pmOH AND FOR JOE SIXPACK. YA JUST HAVE TO FEEL SORRY FOR THESE RIGHTWINGERS. THE CRAPOLA THEY HAVE BEEN FED AND INDOCTRINATED WITH SINCE CHILDHOOD LEAVE THEM NO OTHER CHOICE THAN TO BE ROBOCTIC WEASELS.
December 7th, 2005 at 12:38 pmWell look at it in this light. It’s actually only 2 weeks longer than the Senate will be out. That means that there won’t be anymore tax cuts for the super rich, budget cuts for the poor, (crockadile) Tears over Katrina, and best of all
it’ hands an excellent talking point and issue ad to the Democrats to use in an election year. I think Hastert the bastert should keep em out for at least 6 months… just to prove he’s a man….
December 7th, 2005 at 1:11 pm[...] Judd called attention to a rather underhanded tactic to keep Tom DeLay in charge of the Republicans in the house – Put the country’s business on hold so he can address his legal matters. [...]
December 7th, 2005 at 1:36 pmHastert is a powerless clown without Delay to shore-up his weaknesses. The time delay is unforgivable though, perhaps it will be remembered when November 2006 rolls around.
December 7th, 2005 at 1:50 pmHasturd is as big a criminal as Tom DeLuge, both belong in the same closet, tied together by their shoestrings. Light a fire, and see who makes it out first. Then shoot him.
At first I was angered over these shenanigans of Hasturd, but, after thinking about it, I thought what the hell. This is going to kill him. Someone needs to take a poll in Hasturds district. I am sure that all you will find is the puke 36 percent.
These people are on a sleigh ride to their own demise. Let them go. Just keep the pressure up, and they will bend, and then break.
December 7th, 2005 at 2:26 pmAfter voting themselves pay raises, they can now vote themselves a WHOLE MONTH extra vacation??
The 27th amendment states that those raises don’t go into effect until after next election … they can vote to give themselves 100 billion dollars each … doesn’t mean that they’ll be re-elected. It’s the most recent ammendment and was almost a part of the Bill of Rights … I guess they wanted to take a “wait and see” attitude … for 200 or so years.
December 7th, 2005 at 2:32 pmI am surprised you dirty liberals didn’t bring up the August 2005 article in Vanity Affair that exposed an FBI wiretap of some Turkish nationals that boasted that Hastert was on the take and had accepting bribes. Keep in mind that those the claims have not been proven or disproven.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but could DeLay’s behind be behind Hastert’s behind, with “The Hammer” keepin the lid on any further FBI “leaks” about Hastert? I mean, my redneck behind is still “behind” them, so to speak.
December 7th, 2005 at 2:50 pmOr should I have asked if Hastert’s behind is behind, DeLay’s behind, or is DeLay’s behind behind Hastert?
Correct me if I’m wrong, but my behind is started to get a little confused with all the sleazy politics.
December 7th, 2005 at 2:54 pmRepugs have more to worry about than DeLay. The entire house of cards is coming down around their ears thanks to the Abramoff and other scandals.
Frankly, the longer the congress stays shut under current leadership, the better.
December 7th, 2005 at 3:15 pmWaiting for DeLay
In a move that smacks of putting party ahead of country, Dennis Hastert extends the holiday break until 31 January 2006. The purpose of which is to give Tom DeLay time to stand trial
December 7th, 2005 at 3:21 pmGeoMetro,
What’s your point? Don’t have one again?
The point is that during a time of war, and with so many individuals and companies at such financial peril, these schmoes are voting themselves a pay raise. It’s disrespectful and irresponsible, like everything republicans seem to be behind these days.
December 7th, 2005 at 3:24 pmI think my point was obvious … you don’t like it, vote them out. I
n case you were wondering the vote was 392-31 (see, they can come together in bipartisan support).
December 7th, 2005 at 3:38 pmAs DeLay has noted on at least one occassion, he is “the federal government!” So the fact that little or nothing will be done until our government dispenses with his pesky little partisan court problem should not be a shock to anyone. Hastert and the other loyal Republinazis will do what they’re told and the American people will continue to lap it up as long as we keep those fags from getting married and keep praising Jesus.
Face it sheeple, America as a Democratic-Republic is dead, gone and soon to be forgotten because American’s have no brains and very little courage! Elections are now routinely stolen and corrupted and there is not even a peep of outrage. In other nations people would be in the streets and shutting down the country until their stolen government is returned, but not here, not in the USA. We’re too busy worrying about who will get voted off the island or fired by Donald to worry about our Democracy. The press, the cowardly Democrats and most of the populace are either affraid, or have just sold out for a few pieces of silver called a “middle class” tax cut. And we’re going to export democracy? Ha, ha, hahaha.
So let Hastert, DeLay and Bush’s bully boys shut down the government and do whatever else they please. As the Dems have learned, resistance is futile!. The Republinazis kill our young soldiers for profit and lies, rob the treasury, pollute the air and water, dismantle public education, cheat retirees and the sick with phony “drug assistance” programs, cut up the so called “social safety net” let corporations dump pension plans and transfer jobs overseas while getting huge tax credits while laughing all the way to the bank to deposit their loot and blood money. Want to bet they’re still in power in 2006? Want to bet that very few if any will lose their jobs in November 2006? I don’t know why American’s are so worried about gay sex and gay marriage when it’s plain the vast majority in the country enjoys having the Republicans slam the wiener up their ass every chance they get and the majority keeps coming back for more! American history since the 2000 elections will read like a Bill O’Reilly porn novel; “beat me, whip me, screw me, ohhh it hurts sooo good”.

December 7th, 2005 at 3:47 pmNext year the Repuklicans return from a monthlong vacation.
By November, let’s give them a vacation they really deserve.
December 7th, 2005 at 3:51 pmA PERMANENT ONE!
Let ‘em close the whole damn town down. Someone needs to throw a net over DC anyway.
Maybe their constituents will rise up and put them all in stockades at home, in the town squares and capital statehouse lawns, from sea to shining sea.
Or maybe just paint “Get Back To Work Or You’re Fired,” with red paint on the front doors of their offices.
December 7th, 2005 at 4:02 pm“I think my point was obvious … you don’t like it, vote them out. I

Comment by Giacomo ” GeoMetro
If Diebold wasn’t making the voting equipment, that would seem like a good idea. And it still is, but be assured that republicans WILL steal as many seats as they can in 2006. Ohio 2005 is already an example of how far they’re willing to go. The final results tallied 40% off of polling. That isn’t just suspicious, it’s IMPOSSIBLE.
December 7th, 2005 at 4:06 pmGranted they get an extra month of vacation but it also slows down the march of mean spirited legislation from our “so called” representatives.
December 7th, 2005 at 4:24 pmval,
Good point!
December 7th, 2005 at 4:27 pmGreat! Keep “em out until the 2006 elections when the Dems will gain the majority. Since the only legislative ideas they have are destroy the environment, tax cuts for oil companies, and Patriot Act crap, I prefer they not show up at all. At least they won’t continue to drive the country deeper into the abyss.
December 7th, 2005 at 4:40 pmIt would be killer of the House Democrats to show up when the Senate starts and start holding “shadow” house meetings. You know, fact finding committees, press conferences. Message: “we’re here to work for America while the Repubs are busy protecting their own”
December 7th, 2005 at 5:22 pm[...] Dennis Hastert is still doing his master’s bidding and is postponing the House’s January session until January 31 in hopes that Tom DeLay can ride this scandal out. Not that it matters much. The latest polls in Texas say DeLay will be gone in a year anyways. [...]
December 7th, 2005 at 5:25 pmI would like to remind Dennis Houseturd that the house of representatives does not represent him, or tom deluge.
The house is supposed to do the PEOPLES business. Get with it housseturd.
December 7th, 2005 at 5:46 pmThe latest polls in Texas say DeLay will be goin in a year anyways
Problem is the poll was taken with DeLay against some anonymous democrat. This anonymous democrat has yet to be swiftboated, his/her patriotism impugned or the votes cast for him/her miraculously counted as votes for DeLay.
December 7th, 2005 at 5:47 pmI would like to see this gang of thieves suspend House actions for a year if it pleases Mr Delay because I agree with nothing they do and hold out hope after hope that Dems will take control next Novenber. In the mean time we will muddle through with no House of Representatives………Could the Senate agree to sit out also?
December 7th, 2005 at 5:58 pmWhy is anybody surprised? They gave themselves a raise, lousy job performance not withstanding, so why not throw in some extra vacation time. They are, afterall, the most lying, greedy, self-serving bunch to ever sit in power. Meanwhile, back at home, many of their constituents are either jobless, working for a stagnant minimum wage, jumping through hoops to file bankruptcy over unpaid medical bills, or having their pensions stripped away. Come to think of it, you’d think the crooks would want less vacation time and more time in DC to hide from an increasingly disatisfied constituency.
December 7th, 2005 at 5:59 pmI guess this proves that the only good Repugnican is a dead Repugnican. This would apply to my family too. How can any right-thinking American think that the repugs are anything but a bunch of yellow-bellied crooks. Irag, economy – good going Bush Crime Family.
December 7th, 2005 at 6:01 pmhey all,
the pay raise is a red herring. the reason lawmakers, in general, give themselves pay raises is to keep their pay scales in line with inflation (that’s almost always the foundation of an argument in favor – it’s actually an annual ‘cost of living increase’ that is automatic unless it’s voted down). and each lawmaker represents around 600,000 constituents (not all voters, mind you). if you break it down, however, it means that in a year, each constituent is paying their representative roughly 27.5 cents (165,200/600,000). even if you take all of those ineligible to vote out of the equation, it’s still significantly less than $1 a year.
moreover, democrats would have had to be complicit in this bit of pocket-stuffing in a vote that passed by an overwhelming 392-31. my guess is democrats are wagering the pay raise question is, as it always has been, a non-issue.
certainly there is something to the argument that we’re still not getting our money’s worth, though! And furthermore, the timing of this pay raise is horrible.
we should stick to the ridiculous lobbying situation and how some rep’s are bought and paid for. the point is that our elections are bought and sold on a market where lobbyists are the stocktraders, legislators (and their votes) are the stock, and corporations, unions and lobbies are the stockholders.
a $3100 pay raise is chump change when a lobbyist can fill election coffers to the tune of several times that amount in any given week.
December 7th, 2005 at 6:54 pmaaaah, yes.

December 8th, 2005 at 5:11 amAnd when they get back, they can authorize another $100,000,000,000 for Iraq bringing the total to $371,000,000,000. OMG
The high cost of Freedom (for US taxpayers) in Iraq.
December 8th, 2005 at 11:35 amyou know his constituents could start a recall on Hastert and get him removed from his position. that should put a stop to his crap.
December 8th, 2005 at 11:38 amI’m going to get ahold of Levin and Kilpatrick and bitch and bitch and then when i’m done bitching i’m going to bitch somemore.I suggest you all do the same and just keep at it until they have no choice but to take some kind of concrete action against these sluts.I don’t think a national call off work week is out of the question either.I imagine if we could get enough people to do this we may be able to bring the entire country to a screeching halt, possibly most of the world.Anybody up for it?
December 8th, 2005 at 12:16 pm“…putting the nation’s business on hold…

Why is it that Americans have not erupted into riotous anger over the Bush Administration’s abuse?
Think of it — 1776, The dual French Revolutions, 1917 Russia, The Boxers, Mau Mau, Vietnam, Algeria, all for roughly the same reason. The rich bastards who run things periodically push too far and get killed. Why not here?
Now don’t get me wrong. I advocate no violence. Still, historically, most revolutions have occured for lesser reasons. Even our own rebellion against the Crown was provoked by less (Tea taxes — they must have been Republicans).
I’m beginning to think Americans are just too stupid and self-absorbed to really care.
“Oh, watching it just makes me mad. Let’s talk about something else.”
Proud to be an American?
December 8th, 2005 at 2:30 pmStuff it.
What next?? WEll for one thing I hope Justice will be coming for both our illustrious Senator Burns, and our House rep, Rehberg. They both sent me lengthy e-mails about why some programs have to be cut to pay for Katrina etc. Read food stamps, Medicare, Medicaid, Farm aid. Not one answered when I asked how they’d vote on their own pay raises and so-called tax cuts. Burns even went so far as to say he would not vote for cutting anyone’s food stamps! Of course he wouldn’t, that was in the House bill, not the Senate’s. Liberal Lady in Montana
December 8th, 2005 at 4:08 pmOh where oh where are the Democrates? I get so disscussed sticking with them and being diapponted .They should stick together on things Iknow thier out numbered but my goodness enough is enough. If they can do this what else are rhey getting out of. The Republican poor think the Republican going to stnd in bread line while the rich go by laughing at them in the line with all the rest. Do they honestly think thier getting tax break maybe buy them aloaf of bread for ahile .Shame on Repubican beliving thier party christens christens don`t do these thins to people.
December 8th, 2005 at 5:34 pmBird Dogging and the Patriot Act
December 8, 2005
It’s clear that Hastert is DeLay’s bird dog, making it clear that he going to try to give DeLay one last shot to hold on to his leadership post, making it more important than doing his job for the American people. There are tons of important issues this Congress has to deal with and right now (to me, that it) is dealing with the USA Patriot Act. The version of the USA PATRIOT Act reauthorization reported by the House and Senate conference committee is a disaster! It leaves much of the legislation’s worst provisions intact: If enacted, the Justice Department will retain the authority to investigate American citizens without judicial oversight; the government will still be able to search individuals’ private property without notifying them; and authorities will still be able to search citizens’ library records, medical records, school records, and financial records virtually unchecked by the judiciary. This bill must be stop through any means, including a filibuster. House and Senate negotiators have struck a deal on reauthorizing the USA PATRIOT Act, leaving many of the bill’s worst provisions intact. Before leaving for recess, several senators were threatening to filibuster this legislation if it contained these provisions. Don’t let the USA PATRIOT Act get away with a thing.
