is mounting an aggressive effort to counter a Knight Ridder story that described Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito as a committed judicial conservative.”
Of course, Alito is conservative; likely, radically so. There is one thing that Bush can do in order to secure his position with his base, and that is to appoint to the Supreme Court someone who will overturn Roe v. Wade. If Bush accomplishes that, his base will forgive him any and all other sins, and we know Bush’s sins are legion. He needs Alito to be confirmed, desperately, otherwise he will lose the little bit of support he still has among his base, and his base is all he has left. Without that, he’s finished. IMPEACH IMPEACH IMPEACH.
“The Department of Justice statement is fatuous. If you can’t tell by looking at his opinions what kind of philosophy he would carry to the Supreme Court, how would you know to nominate him?” said Bruce Fein, a conservative legal scholar and an Alito supporter. “A judge has a personal view of what the Constitution means.”
Why else would they have nominated him if they didn’t look at his record and determine him to be a conservative? And what are they telling James Dobson & Friends behind closed doors? “Don’t worry, he’s one of us?” I think it’s idiotic for the administration for people to expect that Judge Alito was nominated for any reason other than that he’s a conservative who will interpret the Constitution from a conservative perspective.
Top five List of Things Bushco should mount an aggresive effort to counter…
1. Congressional ethical breaches
2. Treasonous leaks of national security secrets
3. Catastrophic graft of taxpayer dollars in Iraq
4. Ineffective exececution of Katrina relieve efforts
5. Crippling increase in the national debt
Anyone want to join me in holding my breath until they pick just one of the list?

Transition of Power: President-Elect Bush Meets With Congressional Leaders on Capitol Hill
Aired December 18, 2000 – 12:00 p.m. ET
THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.
FRANK SESNO, CNN ANCHOR: In the nation’s capital, it’s all about George W. Bush — he’s here and doing business — while in state capitals, it’s the day the Electoral College meets and votes. And if all goes as planned, the electors will certify Bush’s narrow victory in last month’s election.
He’s already looking forward as he makes the rounds here in the nation’s capital. A key item on his agenda today: meeting congressional leaders.
CNN’s Chris Black joins us from Capitol Hill with more now — Chris.
CHRIS BLACK, CNN CONGRESSIONAL CORRESPONDENT: Frank, President- elect George W. Bush came to Capitol Hill today for the first time since the election intending to listen to congressional leaders, the bipartisan congressional leadership. But he also made it clear to them, in more than two and a half hours of meetings, that he intends to stand by his tax cut proposal and other planks in his campaign agenda.
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)
GOV. GEORGE W. BUSH (R-TX), PRESIDENT-ELECT: I told all four that there were going to be some times where we don’t agree with each other. But that’s OK. If this were a dictatorship, it’d be a heck of a lot easier, just so long as I’m the dictator.
Just remember, Only Your God can Dictate to you how to live your life!
He is your True Dictator.
He once told me to do things Moderately( not too much, not too little)
Just try to stay in the MIDDLE!
No thinking person says the war to liberate Iraq is “for oil.” Shouting tired bumper sticker cliches does nothing to elevate the debate, as Judd demanded. :()
“No thinking person says the war to liberate Iraq is “for oil.†Shouting tired bumper sticker cliches does nothing to elevate the debate, as Judd demanded. :()”
wwallace,
If it is not oil, then tell us why we went to war with Iraq then.
Since it wasn’t for WMDs and Saddam is not linked to 9/11 and since we are not fighting Al Qaida, who are in Pakistan.
I don’t remember Collin Powell going in front of the UN with charts and graphs about spreading democracy to Iraq.
Oh yeah, my post about George wanting to be a dictator, you did notice that I included a link to my quote. That way people can form their own opinion. I will stand behind the fact that he wants to be a dictator. The is my opinion and I don’t care whether or not you like it.
“A dictatorship would be a heck of a lot easier, there’s no question about it, he recently joked. Congressional leaders aren’t laughing. Hey, Mr. President, “compromise” is not a dirty word. It’s the way to get things done in Washington.”
“Decent Americans who love their country and support our troops do not spread slanders like that.”
That would be right wing trolling on a left wing site.
We believe the reality side of this story that is coming from our top generals in the field and non-MSM reporting to let us know what is really going on over there.
You watch Fox and read the Weekly Standard and National Review.
You do realize that you are at the wrong site don’t you? There are plenty of right wing sites out there where you can post your opinions and people will agree with you right?
Let me try again: The Bush administration is correct in saying Alito is not a conservative because Alito “rarely supports individual rights,†while a true conservative DOES support these rights.
What I found most interesting about the linked article came at the end:
“The White House and other Alito allies also downplayed the significance of a letter that Alito wrote later in 1985 expressing the opinion that “the Constitution does not protect the right to an abortion.” At the time, Alito was seeking a promotion in the anti-abortion Reagan administration.”
Now, as I read that, if I were a Senator I’d have to ask Alito if he really has a judicial philosophy or if his rulings are based solely on how he can benefit from his rulings. It seems to me that his willingness to write a letter merely to obtain a “promotion” is far more damning than what his record on abortion may or may not be since it smacks of political expediency (or, as it may be more nicely known, “brown-nosing”).
Alito will be confirmed by a majority of the Senate. Why bother with any discussion here. Its really pointless. I hope you idiots do try to filibuster. That will be really fun to watch.
Any resistance to Alito will be met with force. An attempt to filibuster will be crushed and it will truly be the demise of the radical left’s hold on the Court. When Justice Ginsburg steps down as expected next summer, Bush will make her replacement knowing he needs only 50 votes for confirmation.
Democrats are crazy if they take the bait on this one. The American people will not stand for the minority party trashing democracy because the far left that funds them demands it. It’s very simple – if you want to appoint judges, then win the White House and senate. Of course, that will never happen.
The Democratic Caucus has come out against Alito.
Alito is traditionally against invividuals who buck organization, he is against individual rights and favors corporations, he sides against women when it comes to civil rights, and he seldom favors minority claims of discrimination.
Marie – YOU DON’T HAVE THE VOTES to stop him. AND Judge Alito is no more conservative than Judge Roberts who 22 Democrats supported. YOU DON’T HAVE THE VOTES. YOU DON’T HAVE THE POWER TO STOP HIM. Why – because Americans reject the radical far left fringe of this country.
dannyk, you sound like a trekkie with an anger management issue. The words you choose to use in caps scream that you have an inferiority complex. Your juvenile remarks that show you are screaming at people who aren’t listening. That is the futile work of someone only posting for their own self indulgence. Thus my point about neocons, selfish.
You are what Jesus warned about – coming in sheep’s clothing and speaking . Except, you aren’t intelligent enough to be dangerous, only mean and easily corruptable. Your kind never wins in the end because karma is king. Folks like you always get what they deserve. And, judging by your writing, already are in unhappiness and anger.
The reason you are here is to try to goad arguments or, if possible, make others feel bad. The syptoms you exhibit are obvious and if I were you, I sure wouldn’t want to put myself out there for display.
Your pathology is just that, yours. Just know that all you accomplish here is showing what kind of selfish person you are. Once Alito is in, what is your next mission of God?
Marie, Unfortunately, dannyk might be right. The right wing(Rich and Free) Do in Fact Have a Power Base.
The Only Way The Left Might have a Chance at Anything is If the World Refuses The Rightwing Agenda. But then, the Leftwing will have to go along with whatever the world says.
China is on the Lefts side. venezuela is left, cuba, left, etc… The Rightwing might be winning in america, But, America is losing to the World. So, in the long haul, America in General will lose be it left or right that will cause us to lose world domination. its How we lose.
in other words it is not if you win or lose but how you play the game.
The biggest problem is that republicans seem to care more for the fight than the prize. Remember the kids in high school that alwasy wanted to fight some other kid? This is them grown up – still ugly bullies.
You can say I may be a conspiracy nut. I don’t think I am. But I am left to think that the large shareholders of Knight Ridder stock who are calling for the dismantling and selling of the company, in the name of profit, are all republican corporate groups that are trying to kill the only good national voice to consistently speak the truth during this administrations term. I really do think they are openly trying to kill the messenger, but lying about why. It isn’t profit they want, Knight Ridder preformed very well in relation to other publishing groups. It’s silence they are after.
Uhh -dannyboy – we DO have the votes for a filibuster and this time it’s gonna work. Sorry but the sky is falling on your corrupt masters and 60% of americans see it.
Keep your head in the sand so that you get flattened in ‘06 & ‘08.
Any nominee who wishes to serve on the Supreme Court must accept accountability for his or her words and actions. This is a basic requirement, one that reveals more about a nominee’s character and fitness for the bench than even his or her judicial philosophy. It is one thing for White House political operatives to deny and misconstrue Samuel Alito’s history — this week, the Bush administration launched “an aggressive effort to counter a Knight Ridder story that described Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito as a committed judicial conservative.” But it is another thing entirely for Alito to engage in this practice himself. On three critical issues — constitutional privacy rights, judicial ethics, and Alito’s membership in an avowedly discriminatory organization — Alito has made statements in recent weeks that fly in the face of the facts, as documented in thousands of pages of his writings and hundreds of his federal court rulings, spanning three decades. The troubling reality is that Samuel Alito appears overzealously committed to confirmation, and will say anything to be reach that goal.
To help make Alito’s record clear, Campus Progress and the American Progress Action Fund today launched “Alito’s America, Our Future” — a national campaign to engage young people about the dangers posed by the Alito nomination. The centerpiece of the campaign is an edgy and innovative two-minute video mixing live action and animation, depicting life in the future in Alito’s America. Watch it now, and spread the word.
#65, FnF,
I don’t disagree with you — we will probably live to see Alito in the SCOTUS because the right controls this nation, but it will bode a dark period for all of us as the Court grows more and more conservative and unbending.
I agree with where you say we are going in the world – or where the world is going – I don’t understand why the neocon brains (and while those guys are radical, they are intelligent) don’t know enough of history and human nature to see the longer view.
“You don’t get everything you want,” he says, understating the case considerably. “A dictatorship would be a lot easier.”
December 7th, 2005 at 10:17 pmA dictatorship would be a lot easier. He simply stated the obvious. He did not say or imply that he wants a dictatorship.

December 8th, 2005 at 10:40 amThe Only Way The Left Might have a Chance at Anything is If the World Refuses The Rightwing Agenda.
We will have to play by the worlds rule.
December 8th, 2005 at 10:42 amThe biggest problem is that republicans seem to care more for the fight than the prize. Remember the kids in high school that alwasy wanted to fight some other kid? This is them grown up – still ugly bullies.
December 8th, 2005 at 11:04 amYou can say I may be a conspiracy nut.
Go SJ Mercury News. Don’t sell out….
December 8th, 2005 at 11:15 amUhh -dannyboy – we DO have the votes for a filibuster and this time it’s gonna work. Sorry but the sky is falling on your corrupt masters and 60% of americans see it.
Keep your head in the sand so that you get flattened in ‘06 & ‘08.

Say Anything Alito

December 8th, 2005 at 2:13 pmI don’t disagree with you — we will probably live to see Alito in the SCOTUS because the right controls this nation, but it will bode a dark period for all of us as the Court grows more and more conservative and unbending.
I agree with where you say we are going in the world – or where the world is going – I don’t understand why the neocon brains (and while those guys are radical, they are intelligent) don’t know enough of history and human nature to see the longer view.

I can not agree with you in 100% regarding some thoughts, but you got good point of view
