The Washington Post reports that, at yesterday’s speech for the Council on Foreign Relations, President Bush had trouble filling the room:
Only a few hundred members showed up for the hastily organized event at a Washington hotel and empty chairs were removed from the back of the ballroom before Bush arrived.
It wasn’t for lack of effort. We were forwarded this desperate plea the Council sent out late Tuesday, asking people who were planning on coming to bring a friend:
Bush broke Council tradition by refusing to accept questions after his speech. Apparently, most people aren’t that excited about being used as a presidential prop. This may explain why Bush has preferred giving his speeches in front of military audiences, who are required to attend.

It’s a sad state of affairs when the President of the United States can’t fill a room in Washington DC. I know 40% of America still approves of this guy. But I believe they are mostly in hiding, at this point.
December 8th, 2005 at 10:08 amA preview of what the next White House Correspondents’ Dinner will be like?
December 8th, 2005 at 10:13 amWith only Guckert, Woody, Miller, and Kinsolving showing up, they could hold it at IHOP.
The 40% of Americans that still approve of this guy are too busy hunting wild hogs.
See Ian Frazier’s article in the current issue of The New Yorker (not online).
December 8th, 2005 at 10:14 amMy guess is that it had more to do with the dress code. Wearing a t-shirt that says what I really think would have earned me a ticket to Gitmo.

December 8th, 2005 at 10:21 amI think Clinton, in the height of his Monica woes, also spoke before the CFR while not allowing questions.
December 8th, 2005 at 10:24 amBTW, I do not support the Bush administration’s lies, policies, or wars.
Sadly for Bush, everyone understood that his Council on Foreign Relations speech would be just another rehash of the Top 10 GOP Sound Bites:

December 8th, 2005 at 10:24 amI can’t wait to hear the winger response to this one. Usually you know what’s coming, but I can’t figure this one out. Maybe something about the liberal CFR being afraid of Bush’s manly presence.
December 8th, 2005 at 10:25 amThe audience interrupted Bush for applause only once during the speech and even then, many, if not most, did not clap. There was polite applause when he finished.
Perhaps the audience was too much in awe of dear leader.
December 8th, 2005 at 10:26 amThe King is naked! He can no longer call court because his subjects cannot tolerate the blinding glare sent by his bare butt.
December 8th, 2005 at 10:27 amI also wonder if they are searching attendee’s looking to boot anyone with subversive T-shirts like they did in Denver a year ago.
Stick a fork in it! Dumbya is so done.
December 8th, 2005 at 10:27 amInstead of posting that email, you should have clicked the “this is spam” link…truer words have never been hotlinked…
December 8th, 2005 at 10:30 amMaybe the Democrats should not show up for SOTU.
December 8th, 2005 at 10:32 amI’m just bummed that the CFR dissidents didn’t try this. It would have cost little more than the price of a cheap pay-as-you-go cellphone, and required a little bit of advance planning, but it would have ensured that Bush was unable to get any usable soundbites.
December 8th, 2005 at 10:36 amMurtha called it right yesterday–no credibility.
The CFR is typical of 60% of US…What thinking person would believe anything the President says.
For the blind faithers, I have this bumper sticker:
Bush? Beware
December 8th, 2005 at 10:36 amFalse Prof-phets
NYTimes today calls W’s CFR speech a pack of lies, in Times-speak: “President’s Account of Gains Depicts Only Part of the Picture.” Why can’t they just call him a liar??
December 8th, 2005 at 10:37 amI know 40% of America still approves of this guy.
Clearly, however, that 40% aren’t getting invitations to CFR meetings. Which is saying something, given Washington’s penchant for sycophancy and ass-kissing.
December 8th, 2005 at 10:37 am[…] When the Heathers turn on one of their own. The phone calls stop, no one wants to sit with you in the lunchroom… and forget about prom! […]
December 8th, 2005 at 10:39 amI just want to say how refreshing it is to hear Murtha speak for extended periods without word-for-word notes and teleprompters.
I’ll say it:
The Murtha/Clinton Ticket?
December 8th, 2005 at 10:53 amWhere is the desperate plea text?
–
December 8th, 2005 at 10:54 amMurtha I understand, but Clinton?
December 8th, 2005 at 11:00 amGeorge never really wanted the job.
He was talked into it by people with (slightly) more personality.
A sick world when a mediocre illiterate with no interest in anything can be handed this much power.
December 8th, 2005 at 11:05 amMurtha –YES: CLINTON (B?H)–NO! and for damned sure no Lieberman….
December 8th, 2005 at 11:08 amWhile I appreciate Priscilla’s comment; “I think Clinton, in the height of his Monica woes, also spoke before the CFR while not allowing questions.
December 8th, 2005 at 11:13 amBTW, I do not support the Bush administration’s lies, policies, or wars,” the current occupant of the White House has much more to answer for. Questions for aWol that come to mind have much more to do with the future of our country. Also, Clinton never was a Bubble Boy like this idiot.
no
December 8th, 2005 at 11:17 amMurtha yes, Clinton no. How about Barbra Boxer for vp or Obama.? Use to champion for Hillery, not now. She’s doing good in NY but not for pres or vp…..Blessings
December 8th, 2005 at 11:17 amI don’t blame folks for not wanting to show up for an event which was advertised by all to be a re-hash of old hash. My wife, a recovering Republican, stated to me over the weekend that listening to the Preznit “sounds like fingernails screeching across a chalkboard” to her.
Why would anyone show up for that?
December 8th, 2005 at 11:18 amThis is at least the second spot you have given to this story without mentioning the fact that Bill Clinton also broke with tradition by not allowing questions after his speech (as reported by NPR yesterday). I am certainly not a Bush supporter by any measure, but let’s be fair here.
December 8th, 2005 at 11:29 amThe guy can’t put a sentence together. Why would he take questions?
December 8th, 2005 at 11:31 amSo if Clinton didn’t take questions, then we shouldn’t criticize Bush for doing the same? Have you ever thought that maybe both politicians should have been criticized? Does that mean every time I criticize Bush for something, I have to check to make sure Clinton didn’t do the same thing?
Bush is the President. Not Clinton.
December 8th, 2005 at 11:34 amThey would have had standing room only and raised money for the GOP if they’d have put him in a dunk tank.
December 8th, 2005 at 11:38 amI think people lost all interest in everything Bush had to say when he billed that speech last Wednesday as a “major war speech” and it was basically the old “Stay the course” stump speech we’ve all heard a hundred million times already.
December 8th, 2005 at 11:41 amFrankly, it’s astounding that, in an era when foreign relations, with terrorism, rebuked and abused allies, and war all at the forefront of our national debate, a President couldn’t fill even half a room.
Amazing. Simply amazing.
December 8th, 2005 at 11:48 am#29
Exactly. If Clinton didn’t allow questions, then he is a pussy too. We aren’t saying Bush is bad for not allowing questions, but Clinton was okay.
We are progressives here. We don’t side with the democrats in lock step either. I say anything that anyone does should be look at through a microscope.
By going into politics, you are agreeing to let people pick at everything you do. If a politician doesn’t like it, get out of politics.
December 8th, 2005 at 11:59 amAs on-the-make-careerists, CFR was too well-behaved to prop up a cardboard Bush cutout and question it after the speech.
December 8th, 2005 at 12:01 pmI think Murtha would make a great veep, I dunno if he is enough to carry a ticket (and don’t know who is in the Dem camp - definately not HRC or other bush supporters in Dem clothing - how can they still give the prez credability!!! he has yet to show ANY since he has been in office)
December 8th, 2005 at 12:04 pmThink less and less will show up for Bush speeches. In fact if it were not mandatory for the military to be present only the camera men would of been present in the past, they are paid to attend by the reich wing. Nothing new about what Bush says except he and his bunch are revving up and saying it more often and with screaching. Clinton never had to do this. But then, when Clinton spoke he made sence…..Blessings

Guess he needs to have a chat with his minister of propaganda.

That one sounds pretty good. I’m a big Obama fan too, but I think he’s a couple of elections out. I believe we have to put forward a candidate (or candidates) with military backgrounds, because Bush et al have been hammering the American public for what will be 8 years. Most Americans won’t simply emerge from a militarized society just b/c we have a new president. It’ll take time. Plus, we (being Progressives) have to have a candidate that understands the power the Military Induxtrial Complex wields in Washington. That probably sounds pretty consirial, but look at the way Hillary is running towards military influences. Personally, I think she could be an effective leader, but she’s too polarizing and I think many progressives would be disappointed in her the way neocons would be disappointed in McCain.
December 8th, 2005 at 12:46 pmI supported Wes Clark orginally, but I think he signed on with the rest of them to oust Dean, and I can’t abide that.
December 8th, 2005 at 12:47 pmHoward Dean was an emergency room physician.
He dealt with life and death decisions daily, and from what I hear, he was pretty good at it.
I can’t think of a better qualification then a man whose life was dedicated to saving human lives.
December 8th, 2005 at 12:49 pmwords out - if you’re seen with bUSH and you don’t have to attend, your career is finished. these CFR mf’rs are closer to the big NWO bankers than US politicians - in the global big picture rubbing elbows with “W” is now poison…
enjoy your tailspin LipsBush!
December 8th, 2005 at 1:18 pmThe Democratic party is in disarray. Dean is outspoken, tough, and give straight talk, concepts that send repubo-dems like Hillary and Judas Lieberman running for the hills.
Even Kerry hasn’t learned a thing. They need to get on board with their leaders (DEANs) message or leave the party.
Dean is the leader, and in the words of Dubya, your either for him, or against him.
DEAN FOR PRESIDENT!!!
December 8th, 2005 at 1:22 pmWORFEUS- Thanks for the info on Dean. If I ever have a heart attack when I’m in D.C. I’ll ask for Dean. If I get Frist, I’ll ask to let the heart fail.
December 8th, 2005 at 1:26 pmGood choice Jimbo.
I don’t think Frist is even aware human beings have hearts.
December 8th, 2005 at 1:28 pmThis Season’s Turkey
December 8, 2005
Again, at the Council on Foreign Relations, President Bush spew out another bromide, thus failing Americans once again. Bush is never going to have any credibility with Americans until he level with us. Bush’s staying power in “staying the course†is losing steam: the American public isn’t any safer since Bush started the Big Fat Lie known as the Iraq war. It’s time for Bush to really level with us for a new course for an endgame for Iraq. To begin with the Iraq war has not paid for itself. This holiday season Bush’s turkey has cost Americans over $277 billion and is expect to grow $100 billion more—over 2100 American lives. Again, Bush has no choice but to come clean with the American public: we can’t have a national consensus without an honest debate, which Bush is constantly running from. We need to know the true costs of the war and how Bush intends to pay for it; how he’s going to lay out some benchmarks for success; but more importantly, the American people need to see some signs that the Bush administration has a plan for Iraq that goes beyond “stay the course.†To me, the American public can not, will not stand for any more of this psychotic posture: see you at the 2006 mid term election, George.
December 8th, 2005 at 1:35 pmIt’s all the same cabal lies just with a different spin. Everybody’s figured that out by now. No one come because they don’t want to hear the same lies again. Its going to be a long 3 years.
December 8th, 2005 at 1:40 pmthis man just makes me so sick, he is truly delusional and needs psychiatric help.
December 8th, 2005 at 2:17 pmYou know I was just thinking that Judd Legum on his birthday could probably attract a bigger crowd than President Bush (p.s. does anyone know when Judd’s birthday is?)
December 8th, 2005 at 2:21 pmAs to the low attendance at Bush’s speech — he only has one speech that he recites over and over again (and his still mispronounces some of the big words)so unless they are giving away free food and drinks or other attractions, why waste an evening?
December 8th, 2005 at 2:26 pmDean can’t run for president. His position as chairman of the DNC lasts through the 2008 election - he took the position knowing it precluded a presidental bid in 08.
I’d like to see a ticket with one of the Democratic veterans (as mentioned, we need a military presence on the next ticket), and maybe Murtha for VP. Obama, I think, needs to establish himself in the Senate with a second term, and that would line up nicely with the 2016 election. It’s a long way out, I know, but he’s young - he’d be 55 then. Or 51 in 2012. He’s got time.
December 8th, 2005 at 2:46 pmThere is only one candidate that I will feel great about voting for. AL GORE. Let’s see…he will push environmental issues, push technological advancement, he can speak intelligently, and on. Conbine him with another go getter and we’ll start to get back on track. Oh, by the way, he was and is against this war on “terrorism”.
December 8th, 2005 at 3:17 pmI have an idea for Bush’s captive military audiences. The troops could turn their back on him. I so wish they would. That would perfectly befit a criminal president.
December 8th, 2005 at 3:41 pmThe last and only chance Gore had to win the presidency was in 2000. He did win, and then wasn’t installed because of a palace coup. I am confident that had he actually defeated the coup, he would have been re-elected in 2004. But that time is past. Perhaps Gore could have been the real President had he understood what he was fighting, which was an attempt to undermine American democracy, rather than just any old election infighting.
Gore would make a good president. Sadly, he will never be a good campaigner and doesn’t have what it takes to BECOME president against anyone other than George W. Bush, and Bush will not be running in 2008.
Hillary Clinton, too, can never be president. It simply won’t happen. But in Hillary’s case I’m glad.
There is a difference between who I would like for President in an ideal world, and what would actually work. I think Edwards/Obama would be a great choice for workability. If I had my druthers, it would be something like Gore/Pelosi or Kucinich/Pelosi.

Bush is neutered by:
LOTBTP: LOSS OF TRUST BY THE PEOPLE
LDS: LAME DUCK STATUS
December 8th, 2005 at 10:25 pmFeingold/Obama, multicultural and progressive…
December 8th, 2005 at 11:02 pmElections are charades that the duped participate in. The CFR knows who selects the CEO of USA,inc and it sure isn’t we the people. If either of the corrupt political parties were to fight for an open and honest election system or expose the fraud-riddled electronic vote counting machines then I would believe real party leadership was possible. Anything less is a gameshow to distract the people. Right now the spell has been broken for the GW Bush sitcom. Soon that vacuum will be filled with a new gameshow host. The CFRers are simply waiting for their casting call; then they will show up for their assigned roles.
December 8th, 2005 at 11:13 pmIn the unlikely event Bush gives another live speach in front of an invited audiance, Dems should pack room and interrupt him mid-stream to ask questions. Civil disobediance works. And its fun.
December 9th, 2005 at 2:49 amDOWNING STREET DOCUMENTS!
December 9th, 2005 at 7:24 amI Love Sharon Fox’s use of words, which I quote here, requiring military to be present for GWB’s speech. The neo-nazi” style adopted by GWB and many of this administration defines them as “The Reich Wing”.

I whole heartedly support the candidacy of that well known political orator, Dr/Governor Howard DEAN. I think a DEAN/KUCINICH ticket would really give progs the edge.
December 9th, 2005 at 2:44 pmDean/Kucinich. 2008? Wow, I may have to change jobs and become a stand-up comic! The material these two could provide would turn Jay Leno into a 24 hour show!
