I have just finished William Manchester's The Glory and the Dream: A Narative History of America(Little Brown , NY, 1974)1932-1972. It's my second read of that two volume set. The consciousness of fear and lack among a certain class of opportunists politicians and their "ditto head" constituency is a deep theme in American politics. The losss of good minds and men of ability to that wing of fear and lack is well documanted not just in the period of Manchesters narrative but it is also found going back to radical quislings like Burr and Arnold. I have read and re-read Liberman's printed statements and interview transcripts looking for a clue to his present position. While he has not quite endorsed radical stances in his statements, he has alway seemed to have been able to reinterpret and restate needs and outcomes to serve agreater good. He has added or stricken strident language from positions and legistlation under consideration to achieve euitable ends. That has been a common theme for much of our top leadership since the beginning of the FDR years. Any one from the middle right of our political spectrum is alway subject to falling under the spell of the radical right. He is not the first Democrat or Republican to cross the party line to serve a president in the cabinet. In this case, Lieberman will only serve as a foil for the maniacal agenda that is of the Bush kind. A move by Lieberman to serve this admistration may save a couple of Republican seats in the 2006 elections but for all practical purposes the turnout for that election year signal that the administration is out of bounds and the play clock is in very low digits.

Don't do it Joe.

#65 is classic. While Bush illegally invades a sovereign nation, resulting in the loss of over 2,100 US lives and over 100,000 Iraqis and conservative lobbiests like Abramoff and their collegues in office rob the public of billions of dollars, the right condems democratic leadership over cutlery and blowjobs. Matters of life and death elude the right's comprehension unless reduced to some theoretical debate over when life begins and who should chose to end it in the case of pregnancy . . . Similarly the right is incapable of distigushing between matters of the public trust versus the morality of one's private life. Steal millions from the treasury; is that wrong, asked the right? Steal some silverware and they want to appoint a special prosecuter and convene a grand jury. Lie about having sex with an intern and you deserve impeachment, but lie in the state of the union to trick the country into war and you deserve another four years as commander in chief! The family values of the right inhere in concepts like anti flag burning amendments, marriage amendments and similarly symbolic gestures having more to do with their insecure idenitities as patriots with no concern for the practical effects of their beliefs or politics. It's as though they think that if they appear righteous then they are in fact so. Hence the rampant hypocrisy and corruption. They've been smoking too much of their own dope! I'll give Lieberman the benefit of the doubt for being sincere, which is an irrelevant concession on such a huge issue as is Iraq. Lieberman is dead wrong which is why he is so alone. That he was out of touch with America shouldn't be any mystery given his pathetic performance in last election's Democratic primaries. He was wrong then and ever more wrong now. If he accepts a position in the Bush cabinet he will seal his political demise.

#60 That's why we need Election Reform. Free the vote - by making it free for people to run for office. Gore Vidal advocates this strongly, and we know how he's connected to all of this.

#54, I couldn;t agree more. We are strongly misled by the media. It's why I gave up television. My mother watches the local FOX affiliate. Pure propaganda for Corporate America and the Republican Party they own via campaign contributions. And she believes it with all the blind faith of a life long GOP member. But even she is sick of the neo-cons, and is hoping for a strong Democrat. Someone who has only ever voted Republican is looking for Democratic leadership... I hope we deliver.

#65 Hillary is a female Kerry and we already know how that turned out.

Personally, right now, I like Obama and Edwards. Though a lot of people didn't like Kerry, many people, including some conservatives really liked Edwards. In 2004 he represented intelligence, common sense, and integrity - and as a result I know people who voted not for Kerry but for Edwards being the incumbent V.P. to beat down the road. And Obama. What's there not to like there?

#41 Sorry, I have to disagree. I hate the man. I think he has helped destroy this country on so many levels he deserves consequences of equal caliber. But he's not 100% anything, including bad. But he is very ignorant. And it's that ignorance that is dangerous. We as liberals need to be doing more to educate ourselves and the country about the dangers of nothing but ignorant rich white men running a country of middle class diverse people in a world filled with diversity and suffering. Cheney does not know what it is like to worry about losing his job, not having enough to eat, not being able to feed his child. And because he does not know, he cannot be a sympathetic or effective leader. He does not belong in the White House. But maybe it's time for people like Barrack Obama and John Edwards? They aren't 100% anything, but at this point, after this administration, most of us would be happy with a 60-40 good to bad ratio... Though I do think we can do better.

#52 Ah, no. I don't own a t.v. I get my news from the internet, including international news, and buzzflash. I speak two other languages as well, and speak with friends in other countries about global issues.

What I was trying to point out is that you jumped on someone for being judgmental and then were judgmental yourself. You were then judging my television habits based on a couple of postings without even knowing me. We progressives should not attack one another like that, we need unity and respect right now. We also need to be more accepting that we each have differing opinions and a right to have them. That is what we stand for as liberals - the right to have our own beliefs and be respected for them. Blie has as much of a right to call Kerry a moron as you have to call Biden a joke as I have to disagree with both of you that any one can be labeled that simply with a single adjective. But, I think we will all agree that sematics is not the issue we should be focusing on here. We should figure out who we have that would be a good leader and can win in 2008. And I think we do agree about that.

As regards the opportunistic apostasy of Holy Joe "Don't Give Up Your Day Job" Lieberman, the American scientist-philosopher C. S. Pierce wrote:

"Where two faiths flourish side by side, renegades are looked upon with contempt even by the party whose beliefs they have adopted."

I shared that with my Chinese wife who understood immediately. According to her the Chinese say:

"Our enemies we just kill at once, but traitors we torture."

Or, as Gollum said to Smeagol: "You don't have any friends, Joe. Nobody likes you."

The only candidates anyone will get to vote for will be preselected by TPTB Bilderbergers, Club of Rome, CFR, etc. Did you notice that all the original Democrats in the primaries with the exception of the bottom third tier were setup? Kerry-cousin to Bush and fellow Skull & Boner with Bush(also the one who ultimately limited the damage from Iran-Contra), Wesley Clark- aka the Butcher of Kosovo and the one who coordinated the brilliant response to David Koresh. I could go on but won't. Hillary Clinton is an abyssmal choice which will present itself. What the heck I think I'll vote for Schwarznegger since everyone know he will be dictator someday!

And that means we are too far out to even be considering any of these clowns as viable candidates. You can be sure of one thing, however, whoever might be a threat to the rich and powerful will be made to look weak and evil and crappy to you, the voting public, and the biggest asshole on the planet (chimpy) will be made to look like Jesus and John Wayne all rolled up into one. Sound familiar?

In any case, the Dark Horse Carter didn't even come on the scene until the Democratic primaries in 1976. "Carter's presidency was marked by retrenchment, after the disappointing agony that had been the Vietnam War, and economic stagflation churning at home. He was elected over Republican Gerald Ford, in large part because of the public's resentment that Ford pardoned Richard Nixon. Even then the election was very close."

Sound familiar? The point is it's quite possible we could have a replay of the 1976 campaign with a dark horse Democratic candidate coming from out of nowhere.

How The Republicans Stole Christmas
The Republican Party's Declared Monopoly on Religion and What Democrats Can Do to Take It Back
“We have allowed the conservative religious right to take our Bible hostage, and I think it's time we took it back.”

Bishop V. Gene Robinson
Anglican Diocese of New Hampshire
Publication Date: October 15th
I’m mad as hell. I’ve been a Catholic all my life. I was an altar boy. I went to Catholic high school. I spent ten years in the seminary, studying for the priesthood. I have a degree in sacred theology. Yet some religious conservatives suggest that I can’t even walk into church anymore - without first taking a loyalty oath to the Republican party.

The election of 2004 made it official. With the help of religious conservatives, Republicans have stolen religion. Of course, it’s not just liberal Catholics they stole it from. Liberals, moderates and progressives of all faiths – Catholics, Protestants, Jews, Muslims, and Buddhists – are all suddenly out in the cold. Because conservative Christians have taken over the Republican party and have declared a monopoly on religion.
~~Snip~
Actually this is Correct but only to the last sentence, Conservatives, while having for the most part good intentions ,other than the Radicals in every Group. The Conservatives as The Good Rev. Notes Took over, but they were as Equally Misled. Faith is a Funny thing, not hah hah, but Slippery, cant really Grasp it..Faith is a Good thing, yet it can leave those whom have good intentions open to such tom foolery.
The Problem has been Understood by the Independents, yet they were never heard over the Media, and the Anklebiting Neo-Kooks. The WATERS are also very Murky, Crypto Neo-Kook fascists came from Both Democratic and Republican Parties Alike.

The time to blame is Gone, Phhttt, Smoke, Lets FIx this Mess and Leave our KIDS something Better than we inherited..-AJ

#36 - I don’t like Kerry. He was too thin-skinned and weak. AND there is a special place in hell for any Democrat who loses the elistist argument to Bushie.

The radical right wing in this country is a nasty lot. We need someone with a progressive vision that isn’t afraid to say it and but can handle the assault on their character that they’ll get from the right.

Comment by Ellie in Texas — December 9, 2005 @ 4:23 pm

I was quite angry at him during the campaign but you have to understand that the same PR firm running the Sem campaign was running the GOP campaign. There were many people advising him that gave him bad advice. Maybe on purpose, if you get my drift. The success of Dean's grassroots campaign is what scares the crap out of the powers that be. The DLC is in the pocket of corporate donors and we won't get the change this country wants as long as that remains the status quo. Corporations run this country and Biden is one of their lackeys. Kerry, Edwards and Kennedy have enough of their own money to not be beholden to them. There is a reason "the media" trains you to dislike them.

Liberals hate American conservatives, just like you hate American liberals. At least get your name to make sense if your comments are going to continue being inane and pointless. The latest polls suggest most Americans prefer liberals to conservatives. While IRI thinks buying rope futures is a good idea, I'd suggest Kleenex futures and flame resistent building materials for your compounds.
