The Congressional No-Fly List
There are now 80,000 names on the U.S. government’s secret terror (”no-fly”) watchlist, according to a new report. Before 9/11, just 16 names were on the list, and by the end of the year the number jumped to 1,000. By 2002, the list had 40,000 names.
But the list hasn’t been used to just stop terrorists. Some of the names on that list belong to U.S. lawmakers:
Sen. Ted Kennedy (D-MA), 2004:
U.S. Sen. Edward M. “Ted” Kennedy said yesterday that he was stopped and questioned at airports on the East Coast five times in March because his name appeared on the government’s secret “no-fly” list. [Federal air security officials] acknowledged being embarrassed that it took the senator and his staff more than three weeks to get his name removed.
Rep. John D. Lewis (D-GA), 2004:
Rep. John Lewis, D - Georgia, a nine-term congressman famous for his civil rights work with the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., has been stopped 35 to 40 times over the past year, his office said…Lewis contacted the Department of Transportation, the Department of Homeland Security and executives at various airlines in a so-far fruitless effort to get his name off the list, said spokeswoman Brenda Jones.
Rep. Don Young (R-AK), 2004:
Rep. Donald E. Young (R-Alaska), said he was flagged on the “watch list” when the airline computer system mistook him for a man on the list named Donald Lee Young.

December 9th, 2005 at 2:36 pmThe problem is not with the list specifically (well that’s not likely true, but let’s just assume it for the sake of my point), but the way the airlines try to match names. There are various ways to do so, one of which is, I believe, by removing all the vowels. Thus Ted Kennedy is Td Knndy, which may also match a name on the list. So he gets caught up because someon else’s name is on the list. Also, there very well may be a “Ted Kennedy” on the list, just not that Ted Kennedy.
But 80,000, my god.

Yet they also argue that most people in Iraq don’t want the U.S. to be there. Furthermore, the folks on the left seem to think that we’re planning to attack Iran and Syria. Based upon the total population of those three countries alone, is it really outrageous to believe that we need to be watching out for 80,000 people?
On an unrelated subject, are you training for any specific race? (just curious, I know it’s not relevant to the thread)

You have no idea what you’re talking about concerning John Lewis. He is supported by Democrats and Republicans in my district (#5 GA). For example, I went to a discussion meeting in Sandy Springs. Eva Galambos (R), before being elected of Sandy Springs, was fully supportive of JL at the meeting. Is our security a joke to you? Why waste resources on this if it is not serving a purpose?

John McKay, United States Attorney for the Western District of Washington, and Charles Mandigo, Special Agent in Charge, Federal Bureau of Investigation, announced that MICHAEL VINCENT TRUSTY, age 26, of Granbury, Texas, pleaded guilty May 22, 2002, in Federal Court to one count of willfully damaging a civil aircraft, in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 32(a)(1). TRUSTY is scheduled to be sentenced before United States District Judge Thomas S. Zilly on August 16, 2002, at 1:30 p.m. (Case Number CR01-378Z). TRUSTY faces a maximum statutory penalty of 20 years in prison, a fine of up to $250,000, and a three year term of supervised release. TRUSTY agreed as part of the entry of his guilty plea that he would pay restitution of $30,000 to Kitty Hawk Aircargo for damages he caused to their aircraft.

I would not fly on an commercial jet for all the money in the world.
And it’s not the terrorists that I am afraid of. It’s those two bit burger king throwbacks they have working at TSA screening people, and the trigger happy jump at a shadow air marshalls.
I feel much safer driving myself, and I can honestly say I will most likely never fly again. I even quit a 6 figure position at a firm I had been with for years, just because they required me to fly occasionally.
I am doing my part to help the airlines go bankrupt.

I just read this again and want to say I’m sorry if you took my statement as some kind of anti-Jewish sentiment. It really isn’t. None of my best friends are Jews but I think that’s because I haven’t had the opportunity to meet any Jewish believers. I mean believers in g*d, not necessarily Jewish converts to Christianity.
