Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Wallace

wallaces

On November 6, Fox News anchor Chris Wallace interviewed his father, CBS reporter Mike Wallace, about the elder Wallace’s new memoir. It was a real tear-jerker:

C. WALLACE: Well, it’s a great book. It is a great life. I couldn’t be prouder of both. And I love you.

M. WALLACE: I love you. And I’m proud of you.

(END VIDEOTAPE)

C. WALLACE: After that, I had to remind myself there’s no crying in Sunday morning talk shows.

But in an interview a month later with the Boston Globe, Mike Wallace made some comments critical of President Bush. Chris Wallace quickly changed his tune. From a NewsMax article via Americablog:

“Fox News Sunday” anchorman Chris Wallace says father Mike Wallace has “lost it”…

“He’s lost it. The man has lost it. What can I say,” the younger Wallace lamented to WRKO Boston radio host Howie Carr on Friday.

“He’s 87-years old and things have set in,” the Fox anchor continued. “I mean, we’re going to have a competence hearing pretty soon.”

At Fox News, blood may be thicker than water, but nothing, it seems, trumps loyalty to the Bush administration.

That's it. I'm never watching Fox again! (Oh yeah, I never do anyway.)

  3. Zookeeper Says:

Judd, I like that the "Filed under:" is left blank. Where would one file such a thing? Not honoring thy Father and Mother?

  4. Judd Says:

I wish I could take credit, but it was just an oversight. I think I'll file it under media.

  5. C-BS Says:

Instead of schilling for the artifacts on the left, maybe ThinkProgress needs to understand that the conservative movement is right about Bush and Wallace is wrong. The country is moving right and all the new blood is conservative. If you don't believe me, just look at the Senate Dems - is any power player besides Obama who's NOT been there for 20 plus years. Democrats are a dying breed.

  6. IraqVet Says:

I guess saving your job is more important than HONORING the heritage and lineage that his FATHER gave to him!

I know that MIKE will probably refrain from responding to his son in public, but one can ONLY wonder what his father will say to him in private???

YOU know that MIKE is gonna let him have it BIG TIME, and little Chris will be crying to his mommy for help because DAD is mad at him!

    What a pathetic moron!

  7. Reality Says:

Other than Mrs. Clinton, Schumer, Dick Durbin, and Barbara Boxer, troll?

You've been sufficiently spanked for now. Go back to your room .

  8. Pete Bogs Says:

in related news, Wallace Sr. is now demanding a long-overdue paternity test for Chris... "There's no way a son of mine would be brainless enough to work for a neocon propaganda outlet like Fox News. Plus, Chris has always borne a passing resemblance to our old milkman, Henry."

  9. IraqVet Says:

Maybe C-BS, should be switched to BS-C? Because that is purely BS if you think that Bush has done ANYTHING right for this country!

Here's my 6 years of BUSH misery...

    6 failed years...

    5 current endictments...

    4 secret prisons...

    3 failed initiatives...

    2 false wars...

And a policy that is ignorant as him!!!

Think I'll pen that for a Christmas tune!

  10. Reality Says:

Chris has to defend the neocons- that is what is required of him at Faux. And it is not likely that he could ever get a job anymore as a reporter with anyone else but Faux- the taint of Faux will make the legitimate media shy away.

  11. Welcome to Elastic Heart™ » Blog Archive » Says:

[...] “Blood may be thicker than water, but nothing, it seems, trumps loyalty to the Bush administration.” Holy crap, what is wrong with Chris Wallace? His father makes a snide comment about GW and he practically disowns him. Holy crap. [...]

  12. IraqVet Says:

How long until he says his comments were taken out of context or that the Liberal Media distorted his comments?

    Any takers?

About that family values thing that Faux News promotes so much... you know that one thing about "honor your father and mother." If your father disagrees with you, then you have him tested for competence? Wallace Jr. sounds ever bit as unhinged as his...

  15. Zippy the Other Pinhead Says:

Yet another of the 10 Commandments ("Honor thy father...") broken by someone from Faux "News". Why do the foxies hate those who honor the Judaeo-Christian heritage? Why, it's practically un-aMURKAN what they're doing...

  16. David Says:

Damn, where to begin with this Faux-Oedipal tragedy? A train wreck with media credentials...

  17. Marc Says:

I emailed Chris Wallace and shamed him for publicly humiliating his father; he responded with this:

    Subj: RE: Mike Wallace

    From: Chris.Wallace@FOXNEWS.COM

    Marc--

I appreciate your concern--but my relationship with--and regard for my father is fine. I was kidding with a Boston radio host about my father's interview with the Boston Globe--in which he said he wanted to ask the President why the country is so (blanked) up. I said--the old man is losing it. I wasn't too happy with what my father said--but any comments about him losing it were made in fun (as both the host and I made clear).

My father is fine--and I just hope I'm as sharp when I'm 87--or even tomorrow.

    All the best--Chris

  18. Evil Spaniard Says:

    Hello!

I'm new to this forum. I'm Spaniard & progressive & proud of it all.

I expect to offer a fresh wind from the other side of the Atlantic (you know, Spain isn't in South America, but in Europe), with new ideas or, at least, foreign ones.

    Cheers!

  19. Evil Spaniard Says:

And, by the way, the only thing I can think about the subject is:

"Et tu, Brutus?" - Julius Caesar, in the stairs of the Roman Senate, killed by his own (adopted) son.

  20. John Ehrlichman Says:

I'd like to hear an audio clip if anyone has one. Not to take Wallace Minor's side, but we all know how important context can be.

  21. David Says:

21- Thought you'd have been scared off of taped recordings by now... Say hi to Liddy.

  22. IraqVet Says:

    Dayum Marc!

    That didn't take long...

  23. M. Duchamp Says:

    #18
    Is that for real?

  24. IraqVet Says:

    Hello Evil Spaniard!!!

Yes, but the problem with this son, is that he publicly challenged his father and will run behind jokes and mis-quotes for his defense!

Back then, the son answered to the father for his dishonor of the family name. Now, the son is ridiculed if he listens to the wisdom of those who knew better...

    For instance...

    BUSH failed:

-- College (But Daddy made a BIG contribution for a "C")

-- Business (Daddy bailed him out by placing competent people around Jr.)

    -- Sports Owner

    -- Governor

    -- President

    You see a pattern here???

  25. DS Says:

So, he loved his Dad when it was going to improve his image during the interview, but now he's going to declare him incompetent because he would ask great questions of W?

That whole "I love you" thing seemed so phony at the time. Now I know why.

  26. Evil Spaniard Says:

You mean some like... let's say...

    Neocon = Failed Con?

  27. LBW Says:

IRONIC DETATCHMENT ANYBODY? Sweet God, just reading the blurb you immediately get the sense that he's being a fun guy for an interview. No i'm not wingnut - as left as they come - who misses the good old fashioned sense of irony we could all use.

  28. Evil Spaniard Says:

    Or...

If you want to be a true neocon, stab your con father's back as soon as you get real power?

Or as female spiders do with male spiders when they are done?

  29. Ryan Neato Says:

    #5

Anyone here who doubts the conservative movement in this need look no further than last weekend's box office results. The Chronicles of Narnia surpassed Syriana by about $53M. Liberalism is washed up as a movement.

  30. Giacomo Says:

This is a huge non story as LBW rightfully points out.

  31. Robert Says:

    LBW,

You are probably right, but think of the Right Wing Response if say Kerry's daughter had said something about Senator Kerry, or if Chelsea would say something similar about Bill.

  32. SEIXON Says:

    Hating Bush Never Gets Old

Chris Wallace reprimands his father Mike Wallace for making historically and logically deficient statements. Has the veteran news reporter succumbed to the Bush Derangement Syndrome epidemic? It would appear so. At some point, you have to tell the old ...

  33. Robert Says:

    SEIXON,

Your Bush loving must never get old either.

I don't hate Bush, I just think he's the Worst President Ever.

  34. MichDem Says:

I have allways heard that kids vote the way their parents do , I've found this to not allways be true , some kids become more open minded then the way they were brought up , my friend and his wife as example , me on the other hand , my dad took me to see Jimmy Carter in South Bend in 1975 and when I shook his hand then I had no idea how great a thing that would be to me as an adult .

  35. Gramma Millie Says:

What Chris Wallace said is factually accurate: There's going to be a competence hearing coming up. For him.

  36. Ryan Neato Says:

    #35,

What great things did Carter accomplish as president to make him so great? He has to go down as one of the worst ever in all honesty. You are not an open-minded person unless you look at the big picture. His successor, Reagan, turned the economy around, brought an end to the cold war and re-established our prescence in the world as a superpower. His image belongs on Mount Rushmore. There is no way that will ever happen to Carter.

  37. Trystero Says:

    It's the same old story:

    Conservative figure makes inflamatory/indefensible statement in interview;
When called on to defend/explain said statement, responds "It was a JOKE! Don't you people have a sense of humor? Sheesh!"

A sense of humor? Sure, but...aren't jokes supposed to be funny?

  38. Matt O. Says:

Yeah, this is what I had mentioned in the last article's comments.

Just shows how much a month changes, huh?

One month, "I love you and couldn't be more proud." The next, we're scheduling competency hearings. I guess Daddy Dearest decided not to give him all of the estate in the will, so Chris had to fight back since his "journalistic abilities" will never amount to anything close to his dad's, and couldn't possibly make as much green as him either.

  39. Joe Bua Says:

    What I said everywhere else:

    Chris Wallace is a tool.

  40. Matt O. Says:

#18 - Didn't he also say he was not joking about what he said? (Assuming that e-mail is real).

This is what I am talking about, as AMERICAblog cited NewsMax.

Wallace Jr. quickly dispelled any notion that he was joking. When Carr suggested that his comments were likely to be covered by NewsMax, he responded: "You know what? Fine. Go ahead. Call them. That's fine. I'll stand by that." [source: AMERICAblog, 12.11.05]

  41. David Says:

37- Put the pipe down. Trillions in debt for weapons systems that we didn't need, needless "little wars" that cost hundreds of thousands of lives, Iran-Contra, the looting of the S&L's, giving AIDS patients a big metaphorical middle-finger, and arming Al Qaeda all add up to a disastrous presidency. Not to mention Reagan WAS in the early stages of Alzheimers, but I can't blame him for that. And Reagan did not win the Cold War, anymore than Gorbachev did. The only winners in that were the ideologues and the military contractors. You can get up off your knees, Ronnie has been dead for a while now.

  42. Roadmaster Says:

Sounds more like it's Prissy Chrissy who needs a stronger scrip for meds...His curt, snappy statements of anger seem indicative of something else going on...

Not that there's anything bad with prescription drugs.

  43. David T Says:

#37, Jimmy Carter's many accomplishments included winning the Novel Peace Prize for brokering a peace agreement between Israel and Egypt, the SALT II treaty with the Soviet Union and major environmental regulation. He also advocated energy conservation, for which he was ridiculed at the time but which we can now see as quite forward-thinking and absolutely the right thing to do. And what did his successor do to belong on Mount Rushmore, as you suggest? He created the S&L debacle, sold arms to terrorists to fund an illegal war in Latin America, lied to Congress, slashed social programs and created a fiscal mess for Bush Sr. to mop up. Reagan has to be one of the most overrated presidents, and Carter perhaps one of the most underrated. And since leaving office, Carter has acted as a statesman, championing human rights and helping the less fortunate around the world.

  45. wisedup Says:

Mike, REMOVE the knife from your back, THEN , REMOVE Chris from your WILL. Ungreatfull is just to mild.

  46. Marie Says:

For all the claims that the right-wing makes about family values, etc., it's ironic that one of the ten commandments would be broken so cavalierly by C. Wallace. I bet Mike W. is so proud to be the butt of a lame joke on national TV by his son.
I may be an endless source of amusement to my sons, as they often point out, fully aware that I have a good sense of humor, but they would NEVER joke about me in public -- it would be too disrespectful.

  47. Electric-Escape.net Says:

I mean come on, "YOU BUSH-LOVER!" isn't an argument or even a rebuttal. It is just lame. Kind of like what Mary Mapes tried doing on the radio today.

Wallace Sr.'s comments were baseless, ahistorical, illogical and biased, and Wallace Jr. rightly put him in his place.

  50. Marie Says:

#49, A bonus -- maybe I will pick up a little Spanish from your translations!!

  51. Marc Says:

"Comment by M. Duchamp #18: Is that for real?"

Of course it is. Those implying I posted a fake email from Wallace are out of line. It is a simple (probably form to everyone who criticized his comments) response to an email.

  52. Marc Says:

#41: Didn’t he also say he was not joking about what he said? (Assuming that e-mail is real).

So then he flat out lied in his email response to me! Either he was joking or he wasn't -- I suppose he'd better make up his mind which it was.

Did he tell the right-wing crowd what they wanted to hear, and potentially lost viewers that he was joking?

  53. M. Duchamp Says:

    #52
It wasn't an accusation, just an honest question.

I see you seem to think you can throw out the "Bush Hating" canard as some for of nullification technique but I can't throw out "Bush Loving" as a counter. Pot/Kettle.

And out of the 15+ million blogs out there, don't humor yourself thinking I'm reading yours PRIOR to a comment here.

  56. mighty aphrodite Says:

Mike Wallace ceased to be an objective journalist years ago. I can imagine the fun at their next sit-down dinner!!!

  57. JIMBO Says:

#30 Stop desecrating Ryan's name, troll.

Mighty Aphrodite- Mike Wallace still does stories for 60 Minutes. He goes on location, interviews world leaders, celebrities, activists, controversial figures and whistleblowers. He even challenges corporate America on their so-called morals.

Chris, on the other hand, was a journalist when he was with ABC. But somewhere along the way, heis ego took over and by joining Faux News, he disavowed and disregarded everything his father had taught him. All he does is sit behind a desk and pontificate things that make no sense.
He has long ceased being a journalist and is nothing more than a talking head.

Mike can challenge any president on questions. Even Dubya's
slightly goofy dad. He can even interview Tina Turner and be charmed by her. If his stupid son talked to her, he wouldn't know "Nutbush City Limits" from "Proud Mary".

Chris will never be the groundbreaking pioneering journalist that his father IS. Please take the time to respect the legacy that Mr. Mike Wallace will leave when his time comes.

  58. Lt. Bighorn Says:

This is what Mike Wallace would ask Shrub if he had the opportunity:

What in the world prepared you to be the commander in chief of the largest superpower in the world? In your background, Mr. President, you apparently were incurious. You didn't want to travel. You knew very little about the military. . . . The governor of Texas doesn't have the kind of power that some governors have. . . . Why do you think they nominated you? . . . Do you think that has anything to do with the fact that the country is so [expletive] up?

These are not "historically or logically deficient statements". These are perfectly legitimate questions. No one in history has ever come to the Presidency with so little preparation or so few qualifications. Shrub never had a real job until he was in his forties, he was a mediocre student, a business failure, and he has very few discernable talents. Despite his wealth, he never even travelled outside the United States.

The country must be [expletive] up to have ended up with such a lazy, stupid, ignorant man as "president".

  59. monchie b monchum Says:

This could very well be a joke, as Marc's email (if genuine) indicates.

If so, however, then the fault lies with Newsmax, which "reported" the comments as if they were completely serious. It wouldn't be the first time Newsmax was dishonest.

What would most likely clear things up would be an audio tape of the interview.

  60. Armando Gomez Says:

    The Backstabbing Jerk

    December 11, 2005

Chris Wallace has to be the stupidest and the most backstabbing jerk in the news industry. To begin with he’s employed with FOX News so that means his credibility is shot. It is one thing to be critical of your father’s lack of tack in the public eye it’s a whole other thing to condemn him before the nation. And as an American, Mike Wallace has the right to his opinions as to Chris’s idiotic FOX News! The real problem here isn’t that Wallace Sr.’s brashness but the right-wing talking heads’ intense and concentrated propaganda in obfuscating the general public of the true facts of this Iraq war: Like George W. Bush, the Iraq war is a Big Fat Lie! By coming to terms or just letting it click in your head you will realize that the very foundation of this war is trumped up thus everything that occurred afterward is a lie as well. That means the whole Iraq war have been a meaningless and costly tragedy. The screaming and backstabbing jerks at Fox know this and they’ll say anything to justify the war and their jobs at FOX. And I mean it doesn’t matter how many of our troops return in coffins Chris Wallace and the rest of FOX News are oblivious to all this. This is how it is: FOX provide the sound bits and our troops provide the blood.

  61. pieta Says:

Who among us would joke about an elderly father's mental abilities? In public no less? None of us, I bet. So even if it was "a joke", it's hurtful, and Mike Wallace deserves better from the son he raised and gave an entree into TV.

I would never even think to joke about my father that way. But then, I'm not a jerk-off, and I love my dad-- that is, I'm not Chris Wallace.

  62. Ol' Pete Says:

Baby Wallace couldn't decide where he stood. The brats real name on its birth certificate is Christal. It spent it's youth playing with both it's little juggies and it's tiny dinky. It just couldn't make up it's mind which way to go. So it choose fox news. Now it can wiggle up to both (fox & friend's) smarmy Brian and cold fish E.D. with "ol uncle bill" sliding it the falafel once in awhile.

  63. progressive and proud Says:

  65. Jonathan Says:

Bravo, Chris! It must be tough to have a father who is a liberal moonbat and even tougher to criticize him in public. But facts are facts: Mike Wallace and his liberal cohorts in the mainstream media hate America and fervently wish for its defeat. It took courage and maturity for Chris to stand up to his old man.
